You know, I've seen a LOT of Bruno and really GREAT stuff in Utah, but he doesn't stare down a volcano at point blank range and the over water stuff the young german guy had etc.... I'm just north of Sydney in Australia, but damn, you have some EXTREMELY lovely scenery and great range, from tropical [ looking ] blue water, to the show covered alps, green valleys, beautiful lush forests and fresh unforested volcanoes. WOW Tim, WOW, how do you beat that for range of vistas within a few hundred k's. Bravo New Zealand.
That's the thing about NZ; you can go diving in the morning and gliding in the afternoon. In Australia it's a four hour drive just to get somewhere good !
Yeah NZ isn't that flat! The whole country is made up from tectonic plates colliding, so hills everywhere... just the North Island is relatively flat compared to the mountains in the South Island.
Really enjoy watching your flights. Stunning scenery. My wife and I keep talking about another holiday to NZ, and this prompts me to start saving and planning :)
I did the Tongariro Crossing hike sometime around 1991 or so. Absolutely spectacular, one of the best hikes anywhere. And I'm from Colorado, so that is a strong statement. Brings back some great memories. Oy Kiwi!
The red and yellow Pawnee is that of my Gliding Club in Switzerland! Love that aircraft! I did my flying school following that Pawnee. Cost to much to mantain such an airplane in in Europe, we now have an Ultralight MCR foe towing but is always a pleasure to see it now flying again in NZ. It was much loved by our pilots. 🙂
Awesome! Yeah our tow pilots love it too :) but we also feel the pain of maintenance and running costs, and it'll probably be replaced at some stage soon too
@@PureGlide well you are also experiencing the same problem. Running cost too high. We now have an MCR with Rotax turbocharged 115Hp for towing and costs are much lower.
Great video Tim! Thanks for the running commentary, it really helps in understanding the thought process and decision making of XC flight. BTW, I just completed my first 5hr and 1000m height gain. The 50km flight is next once I complete the refurbishment on my instrument panel. Cheers!
Glad you did not get too close to Ruapehu. There has been an argument about that for 61 years when the Aero Commander BWA was alleged to get too close and it’s props hit the volcano. Brilliant lesson in climbing and so pleased Matamata was saved by the Taxi Driver.

Say Whaaaat?! Boxing day? Man that was many moons ago! :-) Wow, Mt Doom is impressive, and also a bit scary! Imagine you fly there one day when there are some super-hot lava in the crater, that will give you a monster thermal that will take you into space! :-)
Wow, amazing flight. Two things stand out to me from this video. 1. New Zealand is sooooooo beautiful. And 2. Your skill is also amazing. It really is an art and a science. You make it sound so matter of fact. Ha ha. I have about a hundred hrs in gliders but never got anywhere close to your skill level. Thanks for the ride!
Nice work, Tim. You make it seem easier than I'm sure it was, particularly with your sublime confidence that "There'll be a thermal under those clouds".
Hello Tim, I have often watched videos from you, your content is awesome! The scenery is so beautiful! You and your videos are one reason that I also want to go into flying gliders, it must be an incredible experience. Wish you the best, always safe flights and landings, and keep up your fantastic work on this youtube channel
Thanks Tim awesome as always! That brought back some memories for me as I took a scenic flight from Taupo around those mountains about 25 years ago, I remember looking down at the bubbling crater lake on Mt Ruapehu and having people standing on the rim waving at us,it was an awesome experience 🙂
Thanks for all your movies that kept me motivated in pursuit for the license! Today I flew last flight necessary to attempt the exams, license is already in the hands reach, thanks a lot :)
Thanks Tim, I’m huddled around my heater on a cold winter’s day here in Sydney and a good dose of summer gliding from NZ was just what I needed to warm the cockles of my heart. Cheers 👍🏼😎
Yeah can't believe the difference between heading south vs getting home again. As I said in the video, I was pretty sure the day would be good from 3pm! and it was pretty much true
I've got my first glider flight booked for the end of this month. Did a test flight in a light aircraft but can't afford to keep it up and honestly gliders look all the same fun for a fraction of the cost. Looks like madness 😉
Awesome! Yeah great idea trying gliding, way cheaper, and way more 'sport'. I like to say it's like the difference between a dinghy vs a yacht. Sure the dinghy will get you from one side of the harbour to the other which is useful. But you know, it's not sailing! Also I promise all your flights will be just like the one in this video. Haha sorry, not really, you'll be doing circuits :O
I would suggest a lot more fun. In a power aircraft, you decide where to go, set your heading, and then wait till you get there. In a glider, you're thinking and strategising all the time. Much more satisfying. Until you land out.
Thanks for the great video! Haven’t glided since I was much younger and it’s making me want to get back out there. Did you have your motor out at the end there? Looked like a go-around lol
Fun Fact: My dad owns a Ventus cm and during a competition he was on final glide with a JS1 A and both pilots said that the 18m Ventus actually glides better than the JS🤯
Yeah I like to think so too! If both are going about 70 knots, then yeah very little in it. Once they crank up the speed a bit, they will leave me behind sadly. I guess they gotta get something for their money!
Really wonderful, enjoyed the flight very much and the commentary! Which club to you teach at? Used to be a commercial pilot and flight instructor a long time ago and thinking about picking up gliding. I am up in the North Shore.
Awesome flight Tim and the scenary as well!! One question, it doesn't certainly seem to be a Wintery sky especially at that time of the day, so when was this flight made? Cheers!
Huge difference between weather at the start and end of the flight. Amazing that with the Cirrus above you managed to get lift below (was it?) 1400 ft early on! Amazing flight and even more stunning views of the vulcano. Now I have the put a vulcano flight on my bucket list! What happened to the JS guys? Did they make it to the vulcano?
That was a outstanding footage Tim. I started my flying in gliders years ago so derive a lot of pleasure from your videos. Out of curiosity what was the flight duration, and I assumed that the field you returned to was Matamata?
Breathtaking... really. Some 20 years ago, we walked a trail in NZ called something like crater of the moon. No idea where that was (maybe here?) but this landscape reminds me of that beautiful place. May I ask where is that blue light for on the dashboard? Greetings from France!
Hi yeah the Craters of the Moon walk is not far from Taupo where I flew over. The Tongariro crossing is the walk over that mountain. The blue light is just a basic indicator so I know if I've left my battery on, especially in the dark hangar after the flight. Cheers for watching!

@@brunotagliapietra6397 True I should have mentioned that! or it would be a good video concept, a highlight reel. I need to do a very low pass of hobbiton...
Another great video, thanks for the epic views. Can I ask how you fit in that Ventus cT cockpit? I heard you say in another video that you're 6' 4". I'm 6' 6" but can't fit into a Discus bT (should have same fuselage) with the backrest, just no way. You seem to be close to the limit?
Hi yeah I've flown the Discus B and Ventus cT and the cockpits are very similar. I don't ever fly with the backrest. I have a little bit of headroom, but I wouldn't want to be taller. I sat in a Discus 2 not long ago, and that definitely has more length, for the first time in any glider I didn't need to extend the pedals fully! I think the Ventus 2 has a similar cockpit, so I suggest go for the newer models if you're 6'6", and do a test fit, it might still be tight.
I guess your other option is to fly without a parachute, or investigate the parachutes that sit up behind you in the luggage compartment, rather than on your back. That might give that extra 2" you need!
