This is just such a haunting version. Emmy is simply unbelievably surreal. Words cannot capture the depth of the emotion she injects into this song. She does it time and time again. Cannot stop respecting this lady. She is beyond compare.
When I pass onto the great beyond, please God ,Make it possible my only wish is to spend eternity listening to this angelic voice, 40 years listening to her,and she still takes my breath away❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
A Gram Parsons, Bob Buchanan song. It's hands down my all time favorite Emmylou song. First heard it back when I bought her "Blue Kentucky Girl" album. I fell in love with the song instantly, It put me right there in the peaceful tall pine woods
Gram's spirit must smile every time Emmylou sings this song. Emmylou brings out the profound thoughts related to this lovely, simple song...line by line...word by word...in a way no other performer could. But then, that's always been her gift!! Her singing always launches memories...both winsome and worried memories of one's past.
Gram has yet to get any recognition from the Music Association but thanks to people like EmmyLou and Richards his songs still are being heard regularly. He was one of the biggest influences of the time to bring country and rock together. Gone too soon. RIP Gram.
Gram didn't get along w the music industry and Im glad he didn't because we would never had gotten his music. They wanted him ro record main stream pop country music
How beautiful this woman’s voice is! So clear and sweet! I absolutely love her. Listening to her tribute song for Gram, ‘Boulder to Birmingham’, is a real tearjerker! Heartbreaking to say the least! Watching the video of her and him in the slideshow showing his memories in Joshua Tree National Park..and listening to her words. How she never got to tell him that she loved him. Man! I wanted to hug her. RIP Gram. I’m so sorry you’re gone so soon. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Bless Emmylou. She keeps the gram flame alive. And she gets it right. Its calling me home. Hickory wind. The wind is doing the calling. Many people say calling me home, to the hickory wind. Emmylou and gram are opposite sides of the same musical coin. She knows.
I love E.H. songs anyway, but this is performed absolutely awesome. I like prolonged vocals at the end of each verse. Then the guitar solo though relatively simple is stunning, and fits perfectly. All together...I keep comming back to this video day after day. Food for my soul.
The CMA people who overlooked GP & all the Southern California hippies doing country music back in the '70's knew they were behind the curve. The whole Austin music scene grew out of that.
This is such stunning version that I’m lost for words to capture the brilliance of this heart-rendering version. Emmy has created a timeless, rich version. I could listen to her forever. Other musicians pale in front of her music.
Found out some of those things in South Carolina in 65 66 67 before knowing Gram Emmylou their music hits me solid Thank you for such a Special Post ol vet way down in TX jd
i really give her credit not only does she sing like a beautiful bird but she has to be strong to sing this coz it reminds her of Gram since he wrote it but to sing in front of all those people and the song is so beautiful and its all you can do but not cry on stage god bless her
She had beautiful harmonies that contributed greatly to the songs on the Grievous Angel album. I went right out and bought her first album because of that.
Such a unique voice that incredibly has maintained its quality. Ah and we all had such crushes on her in the 60-70s. She still pierces me with her voice all these decades later.
"Hickory Wind" is a song written by country rock pioneer Gram Parsons and former International Submarine Band member Bob Buchanan. The song was written on a train ride the pair took from Florida to Los Angeles in early 1968, and first appeared on The Byrds' Sweetheart of the Rodeo album. Despite Buchanan's input, "Hickory Wind" is generally considered to be Parsons' signature song. Parsons' decision to play "Hickory Wind" instead of the planned Merle Haggard cover "Life in Prison" during The Byrds' performance at the Grand Ole Opry on March 15, 1968 "pissed off the country music establishment" and stunned Opry regulars to such an extent that the song is now considered essential to Parsons' legend. ----Wikipedia
Chris Hillman, Parsons' partner in The Byrds and later The Flying Burrito Brothers, offers the following interpretation of the song: It's his [Parsons'] signature song, just as 'I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better' is Gene Clark's signature song. If Gram had never written another song, "Hickory Wind" would have put him on the map. The song says it all - it's very descriptive, with vivid imagery. It's actually quite literary, but Gram was, we know, was a very bright kid. If you know the guy's life story, however he conjured up that scenario - it's right at home. Gram was shuffled off to a prep school, lots of money... that's a lonely song. He was a lonely kid. ---Wikipedia
Emmylou Harris...Like a new day beginning....or a slow day ending...you start "thinking" with your heart...you "feel" life and your forgotten friends...(what a spark in country music, when Emmylou meets Gram Parsons)...and she adds her voice to history...song by song capturing the emotions of LIFE...and you thank God for your ears and your heart...remembering life from its start...
One of my favorite Gram Parsons songs, him and the Byrd's, version, on Sweetheart of the Rodeo, is still my favorite. A J Tuttle, is next. but this song is more special to Emylou Harris and Keith Richards than any one.
There is a RUclips video of two sisters singing a song about Emmylou and Gram and how much their musical pairing contributed to our enjoyment. Emmylou was there and she started crying. Really touching

Who is the lead guitarist. His guitaring and harmony is just perfect for this song.
Agreed. No bullshit embellishment

Lots of versions of Hickory Wind on the the Tube, but i keep coming back to this one because of the (brilliant) stoned drummer.

I gave up watching music awards shows a long time ago. They're not about music. They're really not.
Gram didn't get along w the music industry and Im glad he didn't because we would never had gotten his music. They wanted him ro record main stream pop country music
No better on earth ❤️
Dunke
I realize I am quite off topic but does anyone know of a good site to stream newly released series online ?
Spellbinding. She sings like an angel.
Gram gave her the gift of a broken heart...and she ran with it.. love them.
That's what it takes, one can't sing like this if they are whole and healed.
Thanks to recording equipment we will treasure performances and songs like this. Emmylou nailed it.

My oh my, don't that make you take a deep sigh and stare out the window. RIP Gram.
My son sang and played this yesterday at a small local bar. What a beautiful piece. ❤️

Heartbreaking and so beautiful. You can tell she is remembering Gram with every ounce of her soul.
+Drew Townson I was thinking the same thing myself. Beautiful

Emmylou Harris does a beautiful rendition here. She always seems to gather the best musicians, and this is no exception.
Thank You Gram & EmmyLou.
Wow, Emmylou broke my heart with this one.Unbelievable/
I feel like I'm listening to a far away echo from a past we all long for again. Dim memories of Mom, Dad, and love pure and real. I miss it.
This is giving me a lump in my throat fighting back tears. Absolutely beautiful..

Thanks EmmyLou and Gram Parsons, such a beautiful song. 'It makes me feel better' each time I hear this song.
What an angel. Emmylou is a national treasure.

My words exactly. ❤❤❤
She is a universal treasure. Just beyond compare.
I grew up in South & North Carolina. Emmylou is so beautiful, inside & out, with an angel’s voice. ♥️
Wow, I wasn't expecting this. You can feel her pain in the loss of Gram in every word.
Emmy Lou kills this - she has an angelic voice! Perfect!
The best female artist of all time
One of my fav of Gram's songs, Emmylou sings as pretty as a bird
Nobody knows what kind of trouble we're in! Nobody seems to think it all might happen again! - Gram Parsons
This is one of the loveliest songs I have ever heard, by the one & only Emmy Lou...sure wish you had her singing with Gram Parsons...
i really give her credit not only does she sing like a beautiful bird but she has to be strong to sing this coz it reminds her of Gram since he wrote it but to sing in front of all those people and the song is so beautiful and its all you can do but not cry on stage god bless her
This is such a beautiful song and Emmy's performace is genius.
She loved Gram. What a sad thing he died so young. She tried to save him, but he burned too bright. Such wonderful music we lost when he died.
Everything she sings is beautiful
I needed a good cry tonight, I got it RIP GP
Emmylou is so special! She has always been one of my favorite singers! What an amazing talent! Thanks for sharing this! Peace and joy, Charles
Most beautiful version.
Miss Emily could recite the phone book and garner a Grammy award.
Right on
She had beautiful harmonies that contributed greatly to the songs on the Grievous Angel album. I went right out and bought her first album because of that.
Only Emmylou could do justice to this Gram song... :)
Such a unique voice that incredibly has maintained its quality. Ah and we all had such crushes on her in the 60-70s. She still pierces me with her voice all these decades later.
Voice of an angel. Saw her several times in the 80s with the Hot Band. Where has the good music gone?
Can anyone do it better than Emmylou? I think not... What an angel...

Go listen to "Satisfied Mind" and discover how directly the tune is copied from that old folk/country song by a Red Hayes.
This song goes under my skin. Thank You so much, EMMYLOU
Lotsa those early 70s Rolling Stones songs were probably written by Gram Parsons, too.
I cry everytime i hear her do this song....so sincere so lovingly///
Gram was the ducking man !! One day people other than other musicians will see it.
Incredible composure and passion together.
I love this song and am learning it!!
What an angel!

A part of him still within her. This is stunning.

I really Like the A.J. version better ,To each their own though
