Our Journey! How did we get here?
In the winter of 2019 we moved in to our self built van full time to begin living, working and travelling Canada. We quickly fell in love with chasing our dreams of adventuring off the beaten path, living off grid and being self sustaining. We drove our van thousands of miles through various countries-Canada, USA, Mexico & Guatemala. All of which we documented here on our channel, be sure to check that out! After many years on the open road we found ourselves 15 acres of remote woods of Canada where we are building a homestead and renovating our fully off the grid cabin. We are diving into this chapter of our lives in no experience, we're so happy we can bring you all along as we learn to do it all with our own two hands. Thank you for being here with us for cabin life, van life and all the in between!

Welcome to rural Florida! Couple of ticks, pew pew (shots) 🔫 and a rogue truck at 1am BUT do we ever LOVE wild camping. This is from our time in the south with Bella and Izzy- we know so many of you missed them while we were traveling and we decided to film a little adventure the four of us went on - hope you enjoy coming along with us 💛 Can’t have a truck without a camper am I right?

You girls need to go to a bass pro shop and get some tent stakes and tent poles , you will also need to look at a small whisk broom and dust pan to clean up the dirt and sand in your tent when you are ready to move on

    Truck camping input :
•pee funnel ((so no climbing down in the night (also bottle of soapy water to chase any usage)).
•A bag hanging on either side of the entrance (under cover) to take shoes off before going in or down
•plastic drawers to help organize (I wrapped tiedowns around to keep them together and then you have spare tiedowns just in case)
Also a little side note : let your fire go to coal for cooking.
I recommend The Cariboo in BC for truck camping AND don’t forget your mountain bikes and hiking boots and bathing suits and layers for the chilly nights.
There are definitely not enough videos about rooftop tenting. Kudos Wives! xo

Oh also a fave of mine for rooftop tenting (RTT) is solar patio lantern string lights! Small and lightweight and so useful after the sun goes down! I hang one set down my ladder. Also headlamps! Trying to remember all the useful stuff I have… oh also the collapsing table the I use as a slide out in the bed of the truck too. Double duty! The black bag shower. 🤔 Costco has a great foldable camping carpet that I always put below the ladder. I also spoiled myself and got a change room tent to keep my clothes and shoes in. Pops up fast and makes organizing so much easier when weather is unpredictable.

I have a good idea of where you were camping. I lived in Pensacola for 18 years before marrying my hubby and moving to the woods in Arkansas. We used Repel with Premetherin on our clothing (that particular formula worked better than anything else) and we used Advantix on the dogs (we had woods all around us in Arkansas). Kept the ticks pretty much under control. Good to see you getting away from the property and having new adventures again after working so hard for so long. ❤

Welcome to Truck Camping Ladies. Just a suggestion. Once you have purchased all the items you need for camping, store them in a large Rubbermaid tote with a lid that seals water, dust and mice out. Tape an inventory list to the inside of the lid. You can double check this list before you head out camping. This serves two purposes. One to make sure you don't forget anything but also to use to double check the items on the list have been either refilled or replaced prior to your trip. Nothing like running out of toilet paper or propane on your trip!

I live in Pennsylvania, tick endemic area. I recommend keeping a small glass jar of rubbing alcohol with you at all times for killing ticks. It's way easier than burning them and when you are in bed for the night you can drop them in the jar without having to get out of your tent/car/whatever.

Also dish soap and cotton balls to remove the ones who get attached to you. Cotton ball with a good blob of soap and cover. They will release to try to get to air. Then dispatch them any way you wish. Much safer than tweezers as you might break off parts in the skin and get infected. Not sure if it will work on Bella and Izzie but worth a try.

A rack for the bed of your truck would lower the tent a bit so it’s easier to get the dogs in and save a bit on gas mileage. You can still use the bed underneath for storage. We took our truck to Florida with that setup and it was an awesome trip.

We put a harness on them to help while lifting them in . We had out tent on the back of our truck but are now building and off-road trailer for it . I like adventure so putting the tent up and down every day got old fast lol

  • @outdoorsman2b918

    Cool tent.
If you don't have them, buy the rods that come with the tent for the awnings. It will make your life easier and the tent will be more enjoyable.
I would also set the tent the other way around. With the ladder to the passenger side. It will be easier to set the truck closer to the edge of the camping site on the driver side, leaving all the available space at the passenger side.
If you don't plan to use the bed of the truck, for heavy loads, I would install a slide out platform.
It will make a lot easier loading and unloading the camping stuff on your truck bed.
Best wishes to both of you.

The door and window posts are usually springy steel rods that will RATTLE if left laying around, so are usually stored for travel under the mattress, where they don't get lost and are easily accessed during setting up. Happy hunting ! Enjoy your rooftop Kingdom { Queendom ? }

I want to buy the 2025 Ford Lightning ( they will have the NACS/ J3400 Port). I will NEVER own any future truck WITHOUT a hydraulic tailgate lift. The Tommy Lift gate I have has been a MAJOR lifesaver! Aftermarket places installs hydraulics on tailgates without messing with your backup camera. No need to get a hernia anymore ladies! I load up refridgerators, water heaters, Propane tanks, Generators, etc . all by myself . The ability to lower your Pickup tailgate all the way to the ground, then just push a button to raise is a gamechanger!

I'd also leave the camping site if someone was coming onto your site at 1 AM and shooting off a gun! How scary is that?!

    ↘️ tips for grilling:
Ensure the container is stable and well-ventilated to allow for adequate flow before starting to grill.
Heat Distribution: Place the container on a non-flammable surface. Although aluminum dissipates heat relatively quickly, the area beneath and around the container can still get very hot.
➡️ Coal Preparation: Similar to an open fire, let the wood or charcoal burn down to coals for a consistent and even heat source.
This might take some time, so patience is key.
Clean-Up: Allow the container and coals to cool completely before disposing of the ashes appropriately.
Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for using and maintaining your aluminum fire container to ensure safety and prolong its life.

Read directions and follow them. I'm in dense woods in N. Minnesota and I've never found anything as effective to keep ticks off of me. You can also treat tents, etc. There are probably other good products out there, but I found this product to really work.

hey girls..easy tick removal. carry a bottle of nail polish, bright color. apply a drop on tick when you find one on dog. the polish suffocates and kills tick very quickly, then you can remove it. (or wait for it to fall off) it's better bc if you pull out a live tick, you risk leaving most of it stuck in your dog which is not good.

Fog lights for the truck. Extra fuel like 10 gallons. A winch. They make a kit for the winch has a stakes you can pound in the ground to hook your winch to and pull you out even if you don't have trees nearby. They also make metal board things for the truck to put under the tires when stuck to get you out. There are literally hundreds of accessories for trucks.

Wild camping is fun because of the challenges to keep it simple but functional. We’ve tried so many different rigs but the best one was the most basic: a truck cap with everything all set up. The issue with a big tent on top is that you can’t drive away in case of an emergency (like that truck in the night) or even if you want to sightsee or pop into town for forgotten things or a treat. Camping in the back of the truck let’s you do it stealth if you need to. It’s also easy for a rest area or Walmart, etc for those nights when you need it. Just saying…

Oh, I am so glad that you have had a great experience with the truck camping. Always have chop sticks as well as tongs, if you are comfortable using chop sticks, they are a great all purpose tool & can be added to your fire. A really good all purpose knife, and a flint or large iron nail to strike a fire. As far as food items: Ramen Noodles (versatile as you can make a quick spaghetti with jarred sauce, or tossed with saute`d broccoli or any vegetable, garlic & olive oil), small jars/packets of your favorite herbs & seasonings, a good salt/pepper grinder, if fresh vegetables are unavailable, dehydrated vegetables & fruits (dehydrater is great for the homestead), instant rice packets, nuts/seeds & a water purifier. By the way, I rarely ever use the seasoning packets with the ramen, but I do save them for cooking rice, when I don't have stock. Hope to see you on the Space Coast.
