Our Journey! How did we get here?
In the winter of 2019 we moved in to our self built van full time to begin living, working and travelling Canada. We quickly fell in love with chasing our dreams of adventuring off the beaten path, living off grid and being self sustaining. We drove our van thousands of miles through various countries-Canada, USA, Mexico & Guatemala. All of which we documented here on our channel, be sure to check that out! After many years on the open road we found ourselves 15 acres of remote woods on the East Coast of Canada where we are building a homestead and renovating our fully off the grid cabin. We are diving into this chapter of our lives in no experience, we're so happy we can bring you all along as we learn to do it all with our own two hands. Thank you for being here with us for cabin life, van life and all the in between!

Hiiiii winter YOU’RE creeping up on us again! Any other suggestions to make this winter season more comfortable? 👀 These are such game changers for the cold season ahead. The real test will be running these on the darkest days (ON our off grid system) … stay tuned! Love ya pack- see you Sunday 💛

I don't think you're going to regret those heat pumps. We had them installed several years ago and they're great in the winter AND the summer. For backup heat in case of a power failure we have a centrally located pellet stove that is on one of the generator circuits (since it requires electricity for the pellet auger). It's been a great solution for our Western Washington winters.

Next time you need to demarcate an area with spray paint, first stretch and floor peg some string between each corner point. That’ll give you a straight line to follow. Happy Sunday!

Sorry, I have a question. With all the windows and sliding doors, how will you keep the heat in and not have it pass through the contour of them? I know that here I have to put plastic on mine so I don't lose anything. Otherwise you are all set for winter. I feel so much better knowing you now have heat, water, electricity, a tractor and all the new things you created so all of you are now safe.

BIG TIP for your heat pump outside unit from someone in Norway: Do make sure you have a roof over the top that will keep the snow off of it and from around it. I had to put up a snow drift shields around mine as well so it wasn't getting buried. You don't want to have to go out and shovel it off.

Its crucial that the refrigerant charge be correct for your heat pumps to provide heat in very cold conditions. The condenser coil (which turns into the evaporator coil during heating) will ice up badly in temps below 25 degrees and your heating capacity will plummet the colder it gets. Any precautions that can be taken to keep the exterior coil free of moisture will help immensely. The install looks good though and I wish you both the best of luck this winter.

Here is a tip for next time, and there will be a next time, on the tire mount. If you place a shovel under the tire you can use it as a fulcrum to lift the tire by pushing the handle down. The cup on the shovel helps hold the tire on and if you squat by the shovel handle and use your knee to press the handle down you have both hands free to get the tire positioned.

I wonder what the average number of times per video I see them doing something like driving a tractor like a boss, for example, and think, "I love them." They are amaze.

Wishing you and your furry kids a blessed week filled with gentle seasonally appropriate weather and restful evenings together. Peaceful greetings from the southeast shore of the Great Swamp Erie.

i have a 100-year-old house that didn't have AC when i bought it, so a few years ago i installed (well, had a company install) a Mitsubishi mini-split (heat pump) system with 4 interior units. Makes summers (especially now that they are hotter for longer) so much more bearable. One thing I've found is that sometimes the water drain gets clogged so it starts leaking into the house. the Technician who came out to fix it gave me "Purcool green ministrips" to put in the drain pan, which should keep the water from getting gunky and causing clogging. I also use the units for heat in the transition months, before I turn on the furnace. Mostly because we can't use the mini-split system when it's less than 0 Fahrenheit outside, and it definitely gets colder than that here!

You know the way you cut that cage, if you cut another one just like it and keep it that way. You would then have a lift cage platform for your tractor you can use when having to work on anything outdoors above your head. It would be easy and quick to move as you work, like a homemade bucket truck.

Me; "I'm intrinscally lazy and I work very hard at it"". Figuring how to more efficently do something with reduced inputs (cost, labour, time, enegry... angst) is well worth the time invested and frustration to resolve.

We took 1x4's and built 3-foot-high frames onto our pallets to keep our firewood from sliding off. Even if you have your wood stacked where you want it. We move them from where we cut&split the wood, to where we store it, to the house with our tractor and forks. It's quite simple and quick.

It is funny to think that electricity is your primary source of heat use! For us non-off-grid types it is just the opposite! Wood would be renewable, propane more efficient, and electricity the last choice. Another great video! Thanks for everything!

for air barrier around the windows you can insert the correct size of backer rod foam and seal with a caulking such as Big Stretch. This will keep out the wind and moisture around windows and doors, hopefully doors were installed on top a bead or two of caulking to seal the gap under thresholds !! Then you can apply your interior finish ( wood) surrounding the windows and casing around each door
