    Our Journey! How did we get here?
    In the winter of 2019 we moved in to our self built van full time to begin living, working and travelling Canada. We quickly fell in love with chasing our dreams of adventuring off the beaten path, living off grid and being self sustaining. We drove our van thousands of miles through various countries-Canada, USA, Mexico & Guatemala. All of which we documented here on our channel, be sure to check that out! After many years on the open road we found ourselves 15 acres of remote woods on the East Coast of Canada where we are building a homestead and renovating our fully off the grid cabin. We are diving into this chapter of our lives in no experience, we're so happy we can bring you all along as we learn to do it all with our own two hands. Thank you for being here with us for cabin life, van life and all the in between!

      It’s amazing . Have you thought about putting a drainage hole where the shower goes ? It looks like the water pools there and it can’t be good for the wood. Other than that but of constructive criticism I think you did the best job girls . 11/10 and the mirror and plants were the perfect touch.
      See you next week ❤️

  • @ledebuhr1
    @ledebuhr1 6 месяцев назад +18

    Girls, You will need to put thick insulation and heat tape around all that plumbing for the hot tub. Pex can freeze but it's the fittings you need to worry about. Also, you should put a roof over your Hot tub. It's designed for interior use and the sunlight and weather will age it very fast.

    • @Vanwives
      @Vanwives  6 месяцев назад +11

      It’s been sitting outside for 4 years in our neighbours yard 🤣🤣 I don’t think it will age much more than it has BUT I definitely want a roof now!!!!! We are blowing the lines with our compressor for winter 🥶

    New England Plumber here --I know that it’s been mentioned many times in the comments, but install two boiler drains ( hose faucets) in the lines that are in the house so you can winterize the water lines between uses.
    And remember to put the ball valve handles at a 45 degree angle when doing the draining process. Fully open or fully closed will trap enough water to split the valve. Great work.

    First off, I'm so envious of your outside shower and tub. That is something I dream of having one day even though my wife thinks I'm crazy. On another note, I realize it's too late now, but if you are going to do more projects that run hot/cold water, I would suggest insulating all the lines, including underground. Even if you only use it when it's not super cold, you will lose a lot of heat on the run from the cabin.

    Wow! Looks fantastic ladies! May I make two suggestions? A rubber mat, like a bar mat, to stand on for the shower.
    Also, I would cover it. Use clear corrugated plastic. A friend of mine has a similar setup in their backyard (which is total woods). The leaves and branches became such a nuisance and made a huge mess. So they covered it with the clear corrugated plastic. What a difference!

      I would also suggest tarping it in winter. Canadian winters are so brutal on materials. Those pretty jacuzzi taps will look terrible by spring if left to the elements.

    Lovely build, as always.
    On note, for future reference in case you aren't aware, measuring for square is measuring from corner to corner on the diagonal. If the two diagonal measurements match, then you're square.
    Keep up with the great work. You guys are building a wonderful home. ❤

    ok ladies, unless i missed something those lines you just dug are not deep enough to avoid freezing unless you plan on not using in cold weather and if that is the case just make sure you drain them. Looks good. Also , a suggestion, I would look into a grate or some way to drain below the shower, in time you will rot out that wood , it will take some time even if you have it pitched, it will rot and possibly crack with freezing and thawing as it may hold moisture and then get below freezing. another possible thing but not ideal is to make the wood below shower waterproof with a product called Seal Once. Water and wood do not make good friends in almost all cases. Not trying to be a Debbie downer but better to measure 10 times and cut once. Spoken from experience. Best to you both

    • @Vanwives
      @Vanwives  6 месяцев назад

      Not at all a Debbie downer! We appreciate you mentioning this as we forgot to mention in the video we will blow the lines with our compressor for winter 😊 I really like your idea to drain the water below the shower!!

    • @liteautom
      @liteautom 6 месяцев назад

      good to blow the lines no doubt. We have some similar experience with some DIY things as we have been doing a small log cabin in VT and now our son is doing one as well near us, they are both near Okemo which if you don't know is a big ski mountain in VT. We are using conventional means of power and water, our well, 300' and 10 gallons a minute. A suggestion you might consider, If you haven't get an easy to do Radon test and test your water if you haven't yet as I see you have very bony soil and that can be a big indication of Radon and radon can be carried in water. We have had some interesting times, laying electrical lines, poring concrete pads, putting in septic systems, digging foundations and so on. We love our little get away. We have a family member that does all kinds of site work and he does so much in the dirt and with those fun machines you both like. Excavator, skid steer, loaders and such.

    You girls are kicking but! Looking amazing! I Just want you girls to know how important your channel is to young girls everywhere. You show girls They can do anything they wanna do if they just get up and do it.! An in today's world, they need all the encouragement and inspiration. They can get❤. So I don't know if you quite understand how important your channel truly is. If I would have role models like you. When I was younger I wouldn't be where I am today. I would be much further in life. Much more fulfilled and much happier, not that. I'm not happy because I have two amazing kids and an amazing rescue dog! But if I could have a role model like you? @@kimberlyavery2645The hot tub is for relaxing, not bathing. The shower next to it only has cold water, and is used for rinsing off after soaking. What they installed in this video is a bathtub with jacuzzi jets, and a shower with hot and cold water. Essentially a second bathroom minus a toilet for themselves, and for all the friends and family who visit them. They only have one tiny bathroom in the cabin with a very small shower. This will make things much more comfortable for everyone when they have guests. 🙂

    I am a plumber semi retired 2yrs now living back home. Cape Breton worked across canada. And lived in ontario for the last 25 yrs y'all are great at carpentry but your plumbing needs help.The drain put a mesh over it keep rodents out.pex well it can expand 10x its own size when frozen but it's been my experience it never makes to that. It's the fittings, taps,valves that will blow off or burst,remember nova scotia our water is 6' down because frost here can and does go down that far because its so wet here with cold.i would have put the pipe in a 3" pipe wrapped the pex in heat tape and it needs a couple of hose bibs in the house incase the heat tape is not working so u can blow it out.drain the water.and insulate below and around the tub and acrylic outside won't look nice next year b'y.some tips for y'all.

    @vanwives, I'm sitting here thinking how many times I wanted to reach out to inquire about helping you tackle one of your projects. The level of intensity and energy that builds up inside me from watching the two of you entertain, almost always leaves me wondering why the vlog seemed shorter in time than what it said. Your perseverance and dedication in building is no doubt a strength, but your ability to seamlessly entertain and keep ones attention all throughout your vlog while building is what always leaves me wanting more. Enough is enough, let me know when you want to show this former Michigan boy how they get it done offscreen and in Canada. FYI - a little snow isn't going to scare me off. lol
