- Today we are talking about how to break in your new motorcycle engine and how to prevent oil burning. The easy break in is the number one cause of most premature engine problems. when it comes to hard break in vs easy break in, the hard break in will win every time when it comes to breaking in an engine. When you get a good seat on those rings you dont have to worry about oil blow by and end up with oil burning.

I have a magnet from the factory on my HUSKYS oil drain bolt,does the 701 have one?
Yep the 701 comes with a magnetic drain bolt, two oil screens, and two oil filters. Filtration overload. lol
And yeah break in procedure is something a lot of folks don't really give a second thought to, but its really helps start your new engine off on the right foot.

I did this break in method to my MMX 125cc motocross bike and it rips after 7 years of ownership. This is the best break in method for any bike. Great video Steve and very informative.
Nice! Yeah I think the OEM break in methods are partly a liability thing. Like you don't want to tell buyers to run it through the gears decently and have someone get hurt or something, so I get why manufacturers say to be more cautious for the first hundred miles on a new bike, but gotta get those rings seated in properly for sure.
The man spoke, true in every detail. I always follow this with a new engine and have virtually no oil loss. Recommended. Sadly there are so many low mileage bikes for sale with oil burn and power loss because manufacturers don`t explain it and most new owners want to `be careful and gentle and safe` .
This video is extremely helpfull. I have a scooter and when I changed the cylinder for a larger one, all of my friends told me that I don't have to break it in and that I could go full throttle all the time. I didn't listen to them and I'm glad I didn't. Now I don't have any oil burning issues. Thank you for your advise and when I get a supermoto, I will do the same thing you did!!

Enjoy your vids. Got a 2014 DL1000A that I picked up in 2016. Used Rotella T6 from the git go and it does not use any oil. Rode from MN to Seattle and back last summer and the oil level did not drop. Put a yosh exhaust on at 1000 miles along with a holeshot fueler. At 60, those long trips are a bit much so I have been thinking of getting an enduro wich would make most of the riding I do a lot more fun. Think I'll wait till the Yammy T7 comes out though.

Ffff that bro... my dr650 saw the rev limiter every shift and some chirps from the tire on downshifts. BELIEVE that hard break in. 😎 I of course let it rest in between those sessions with what you’re doing. Changed the oil religiously at purchase, 500, then 1000. It’s running like a dream at 7000k miles.

You nailed the video. Good facts throughout. Looking at buying a 701SM with 322 miles on it. Hope it's not too late to set the rings if it was not broken in this way. Not sure how it was done by the original owner.

Going up the rpms and a lot of engine braking is the most important part of break in! Changed to synthetic at 600 on all my bikes. No burning oil and they run great!
Definitley man plan to break in my Honda Grom the same way
Going to buy new SMC 690 and will try this method. I rode my previous Duke 690 quite gently during break in and it like burn oil so it wasn't efficient method.
This method works very well if you don't have access to a dyno, I've broken in many new bikes exactly like Steve is doing here and none of my bikes burn oil ..... stay safe all!

Amazing video Steve!! I just got a 2020 Svartpilen 701 And I’ve basically done everything right according to your video except dropping the oil at 25 then 50 then 100- 400.. Do you think because I’ve done everything else right I’ll be OK to wait till 600 to change my oil?
i did that with my gen5 zx10r i still followed the manufactures directions in not going over 8krpm for the first 500 miles but i loaded it up and engine braked as much as possible but those bikes really dont burn oil either way u do it but it definitely increases the chances of making more hp and being a strong bike in general im about to do a top end rebuild on my 09 ktm 530exc and im glad i watched the vid im definitely doing this because she consumes a bit of oil as it sits

It's a toss between the DRZ400 or Husky 701 but maybe I might just go with the 701 because of better versatility and HWY speed mainly. Your vid's are very helpful so keep up the great work. Yeah man they are both good bike just the 701 has more highway capabilities, better suspension, and distributes its weight better(they weigh close to the same.)

+moulin6801 Thanks man. You must have me confused with someone else. I've never had the GPR Albus exhaust on my bike just the current one and the stock one before it. The white exhaust do look cool though but very rare to find now.

Cheers for this vid Steve just a quick one do you do this type of riding style until 1.5-2k miles? I’ve picked up my 690 2020 and rode it back home 25 miles with your break in technique. Dropped oil and filters and will change again at 50-100-200-400 and so on
Think I did it until 1500 but probably was overkill tbh. You could probably be fine doing normal intervals once you get to 1k miles

I did. Probably was overkill but I'd at least change them in the first change because of all the metal shavings after that you could probably do every other change

Really the first 50 miles are the most crucial but after that just make sure you vary the revs and engine brake often. The majority of the break in happens in the first 50-100 miles then the rest happens over time. Should he fully broken in around 1500 miles

Hi, I am doing a top end rebuild on my 16 690 smcr due to excessive oil burning when you said about changing the oil frequently after first ride, Is that all the filters too?? Just they get a little expensive? Top video, so glad I found this
Just the paper filters. I'm still using the screens that came with the bike 3.5 years later

Just subscribed! You said I could break it in from just 3rd gear and down, but another guy in a video said to make sure to take it through all the gears. I'm about to buy a Kym 690 ... I'd kinda rather keep it in 2nd and 3rd anyway till I get used to it's power.... should I just forget about what the guy in the other video said?
It's the loading and deloading you want to focus on. Your gear box doesn't do too much breaking in as the piston and rings do. Overtime you'll get through all the gears anyway. If you have a track near by that's another way you can break the bike in too. Because most tracks you'll have to accelerate on the straights and brake/downshift for the corners over and over again.

Really any jaso ma/ma2 rated conventional oil will work. Brand really doesn't matter

Yeah Except for the first time because I didn't realize the oil filters are a different size and already dropped the oil and no local stores were open that day.(one is a longer high filtration one, and the other is a standard one.) but other than that yes, changed filters every time and still do now when I change oil every 2000 miles.

Just any motorcycle oil that's conventional really. I just choose the T4 because of the value and price because I changed my oil a bunch when I got the bike.

I got my bike brand new at a dealership with no miles on it. I assume they would have the proper conventional oil for breaking in… what do you think?
i've done exactly the same method except not swapping the factory oil (full-synthethic) for conventional oil.
Just ordered my brand new 701 and will run it in exactly like this. Ran my last 4 bikes like this and none of them burnt oil and went like bullets compared to mates bikes. Dealer told me that all 690/701's burn oil until 10,000klms, crazy, no moter should burn oil unless the ring's are fucked. Also thses bikes come from the factory with full synthetic oil so need to drain thst before even starting it.

Bought Husqvarna 701 enduro wit 1500km(~930 miles), but as it is a enduro it’s is total of 46 motor hours.
Pretty sure that guy before me didn’t do this these actions what you where talking about.
Question- should I try to go thru all this process, so could improve oil consumption effective’s/ engine life.
ATM can’t tell if he is consumpting oil, will do first oil change soon.
Honestly it's probably past that point. If it doesn't burn oil I wouldn't worry about it too much, bit if it is slap a new top end in it and break it in as the video shows. But as I said unless the hikes consuming oil I wouldn't stress over it too much

Yeah it's a bit of a pain in the ass for sure, but worth it to save you future issues. Mines at 16,400 and zero major issues.
Where did you get the "passenger pegs"? I will buy a 2019 KTM 690 SMC R when available. The images available show no passenger pegs. Have you ridden "2-up" for a bit or in pinch?
Passenger pegs came standard. I've did very little 2 up riding though
The 701 comes new with Motorex Sport max 4T 10W40 Miniral oil for break in.... So no need to change the oil before after break in.
So the Motorex sportmax will be good for all the break in period?
I've always been told to ride it like you stole it when breaking in lol. Different bike but that's how I rode 2017 gsxr 1000

I was changing filter everytime but that could've just been me being extra. You could probably get away with doing it every other or every third time. And the ratings were Jaso-MA or Jaso-MA2

Should be fine. I've heard several rumors that the bike ships with bel Ray conventional but I'm not 100% sure of that, but you should be fine.

I did it real religiously until about 100 miles. After that just vary the rpms as much as you can. Avoid long highway riding, take backroads or city streets.

What about changing the filter during the break-in period? You talk about very frequent oil changes but not once about filter changes. Do you need to change the oil filter every time when you drain the oil during the break-in period, or can you change it every two oil drainings? Thanks for answering.
The first few changes I changed the filters and cleaned the two screens because the first few changes will have a lot of metal in the oil form the surfaces wearing in. I'd say after the first few changes you could probably do every other change or every 3rd change. I changed them every time, but what I did may have been overkill but for the 20000+ miles I had the bike never had any engine problems so 🤷
If it hasn't been broken in properly and you buy it second hand, would changing the oil rings and taking it easy for a few 100 miles fix this oil burning problem?
How do you think the 701 would do for long distance rides? A few thousand miles?
I know plenty of people that turn them into light weight adv bikes. I think like all bikes, with proper maintenance, and prep it should do it no problem. I've got 14,000 miles on mine with no major issues. I've did a few rides equating over a few hundred miles in one go with no issue.
Hey there Steve! I'm looking around and can only find 10w40 and 20w50 mineral oil. I cannot find 15w40... Which of the ones I mentioned should I use to break in the 701?
+José Ignacio Ruiz Artigues you can use 10w40 as long as it suits your riding climate(temperature).
Have a look at a oil grade temperature chart and compare to the usual temps you get in your area and you should be good to go. Unless you live in a really really cold or really really hot climate 10w40 should work fine. The 20w may be to heavy for cold start ups imo.

My '03 XR hasn't been running in a looong time and I'm getting a bit of smoke. Part of it might be because of the plastic residue from the petcock is still floating around the tank. I'm assuming it has less than 1000 miles on it so far too. I got part of the break in down.
Yeah could be a combo of old gas and blowing the carbon out, Wait until you start riding it regularly again and see if it continues to do it.
I emptied the tank so I can put new decals on it, the "fresh" gas was piss yellow and the inside of the tank has like a chalky residue in it.

I never put a new top end in the bike. Ran 17k miles on the original and had zero issues. Don't have the bike anymore due to theft.

@@MotardSteve so on a car engine a 13.5:1 compression ratio needs 110 octain fuel....how about on a small engine like a dirt bike 450 inparticular....any knowledge on octaine levels for a 13.5:1 ratio?
@@josantos4543 currently don't have any bikes. I always ran 93 octane in my 701 pretty sure that's what the manual recommends too.
hes rite on the nose stay about half throttle dont go wide open low to med rpm just be easy for a few hundred miles then go mobil 1 that shit is good for 15000 miles its been tested to . its the best oil on the market and im a mechanic so i approve this message .be smooth thats the hole idea just ride smooth !

Nah you should be alright. Mine had like 3-5 miles on it at purchase

After about 100 miles I just rode it pretty normal but because I'm a hooligan I still did plenty of acceleration and engine breaking but most of the break in happens in the 1st 100 miles

+sdq sdq not very long. I just let it idle about a min or two while I get all my gear on and stuff. Little longer if it's cold out, but not super long.

I put 350 to 400 miles on mine without red lining or getting on the gas.Just putting around running through the gears.I don't think i have a oil burning problem in general but I do notice my oil level def goes down when i go out for a few rides and do lots of wheelies...i have over 9k on the bike now and am thinking about converting over to full synthetic.
+ThumperTodd The wheelies could be dumping it out the overflow into the airbox. Another symptom to look for oil burning is blue tinted smoke on start up or when you goose the gas I reccomend the bel ray exs 10w50. I've had good luck with it.
Motard Steve one thing I have specifically noticed is that my bike never blows any smoke upon starting..and I have never noticed any at all wile revving It up..and that's the exact oil I'm gping to switch to.i already have it in the shed. Pretty sure i only burn oil when doing lots of the wheelies.. and it doesn't seem to burn to much,just enough for me to notice it went down a bit..
+ThumperTodd Yeah the wheelies cause mine to lose about 50-100ml every 1000 miles too. Wheelies are a whole nother animal when it comes to oil level.
also not high rpm because of the assembly oil, each oil switch clears it.

So Steve - picked up my 701 yesterday and was a 60 mile drive..I applied the exact same technique as in your vid (thanks!), but did not change the stock-oil! am I fooked? or replace oil and start over break in? Also, do I understand correct that you applied the break-in technique for 1500mls?
Nah there's a decent chance that you're bije had mineral oil in it. I heard from a Husky rep that they are shipping the with bel ray mineral oil, but no idea if it's true. I say tgexnost important part is that you rode it the way you did. Just drop the oil asap to drain the guaranteed micro metal flakes that are created from the initial break in and just keep using conventional oil until about 1500 miles
@MotardSteve - What about the second part of the question?: Do you continue to break the bike in for 1500 miles? If not, at what point can you ride with a steady throttle for longer trips?
I found the Motul 3000 4T 10w 40 (mineral oil) that is Jaso MA 2, is it good for the break in?
As long as it's conventional oil and Jaso ma or ma 2 rated and is in the correct weight for your climate than yeah it's good
@@MotardSteve yes Is conventional, but Husqvarna suggest 10W50. Someone on RUclips says to replace the oil after the first hour of use.

You didn't really mention how long or how many Miles we need to ride this way until we can actually start riding it a bit more normally and not engine breaking every 2 minutes, or maybe I just missed it? Also, what was the rating on the Oil to look for with wet clutch?

+Kevin Conway about a little over half, honestly I probably went a little harder when I actually broke it in because that kind of power was foreign to me so I had a heavy hand cause that pull is addicting. And no never really studied mechanics until I decided I was gonna buy a new bike. Then I just studied it hardcore for about a year leading up to buying the 701.
So a 701 Supermoto comes with conventional oil from the factory?
Some say it does, but I wouldn't risk it and just change it right away
My owners manual for a kawasaki klr650 says to do the first oil change at 600 miles. That seems much later than your recommendation of 25 miles. What say you?

Yeah possibly. If you've been hanging it and it's only hern a week, I doubt you've worn off the rough finish of the cylinder yet
Manual says one should use 10w/50 oil, why did you take 15w/40?
Cheap conventional oil found at Walmart. Oil weight doesn't matter as long as it suits the outside temperatures where you ride. I live in a warm climate so the 15w is fine, now in a folder climate I wouldn't recommend it.
My 2 stroke bike is almost burning more oil than gas
i dont consider what youre doing a hard break in. Hard break in from what i hear is hardcore, full throttle pulls. I have a brand new 701 supermoto that im about to break in. ill be alternating revvs with light and medium throttle like you are.

All types of bikes can be broken in improperly causing oil burn and other issues.
It's not just for this bike, all bikes need proper breaking else will burn more oil
You forgot the normal break in procedure, I see you only have two, easy and hard. I'm pretty sure the manufactures know what they are talking about. Also you seem solely concentrated on the piston rings. there are many many more components in an engine that all require breaking/running in. Yes your engine will burn oil at first, a shocking amount of oil in fact as with any big single cylinder, But it stops after a couple of thousand miles. Husqvarna only says not to exceed a certain rpm for break in and that's literally it and it's pretty close to the rev limiter. Other than that a lot of Husky techs say to run it in hard because these backs are bad about burning oil if you dont

Downshift and let the engine rev and slow you down, downshift a little sooner than normal to really hear it rev and if your bike lunges a little you are engine breaking hard... if you can slow down by downshifting through the gears without using regular brakes you are using engine braking only
Hey man probably the stupidest question you’ll ever hear but is that oil change with all the oil filters, screens and all for all those miles??? Then normal intervals?
Yeah I changed both filters at every change and cleaned the two screens as well. Not a stupid question to gain clarification. 👍
Hey man few more questions once I get to 1800 can I still stick with conventional oil??? And if so how many miles can I go on conventional. Manual says 600 then 6000 after that. But is that for full synthetic only???
@@Phuzero1717 I still change mine at 2k with full synthetic so I'd say maybe 1500 or 2k and you should be ok. You'll know when it's time to change cause the shifting will feel clunky
