Nice advice, I’ve always thought most important thing not to do to a new engine is to labour it in to higher gear, i maybe wrong but just a thought. Danny

I am still running in my new Kawasaki 1000sx ninja. The first hundred miles to run in the tyres then the first 250 miles under 4000rpm then up to 600 miles under 6000rpm varying your speed I am following the instructions from the manual. I am also using the full traction control until I get more used to the bike. good advise mate!

There are some videos on RUclips showing identical engines stripped down following the break in period. One as per manual one as not. There was no difference in the internals when comparing both side by side. I loosely stuck to the manual guide with mine, not too slow not too fast as you rightly say it's not only the engine that needs breaking in its all the other bits and you as a rider. Exactly spot on.

Thanks so much. It would be interesting to have proper data to compare the two and I wonder if the manufacturers ever do that kind of testing or experiment?

Alf, if my memory serves me right mate, I'm sure Suzuki did something some time ago with a gsxr, the tolerance with the internals was virtually identical. They say that within 5 minutes the pistons/ rings are as bedded in as they are going to remain , not sure how right this is, but as you rightly said, tyres, brakes etc need that settling in time. I've got a Tab with zombie baffle arriving this week, I'll let you know what it's like when I get it on and go for a run, bloody weather permitting.

llanelwy coiler ah perfect. Look forward to that. Yep interesting about Suzuki and would seem to make sense too

I did see a US video were they took two Honda singles and gave one the "Hard break in" and the other manufacturers recommended procedure. They said no difference but If you looked at their measurements on strip down the ring gap was a lot bigger on the Hard breakdown, To me that means the engine was worn more. I ran my 1200 Bandit in as per Suzuki ( I even changed the oil more frequent ) went to a charity dyno day 25K miles later. Operator remarked how smooth my engine pulled, made 115HP and the word on street was a Bandit made 96HP, put a can on it and you get 100HP. Mines totally standard with a good can, so its recommended break in for me every time.

Stephen Fleming I suppose I look at it like this. It would be arrogant of me to think I know more than the manufacturer with all of their R&D resources. As I said it’s not a bad thing to stick to what is prescribed in the manual as it does make sense

I have 2500 Kms on my glide and it feels sluggish, it has had its 1600km service but it always feels as if it’s labouring. I have done the air intake, I guess maybe the next step is upgrade the exhaust. Any thoughts ?

Hmm interesting it's sluggish. Was it always that way? Was it sluggish with the original air filter and have you had a stage one done too?

RevelatorAlf I have put a Cobra Intake on and it still feels sluggish

Not sure why that is. I’d go back to the dealer and get them to investigate it. It could be a fuel starvation issue caused by a mapping glitch or something but only they can tell you for sure. Cheers
