My front door has two door mats--a spiky one outside to get any sand or salt pieces off, and than a dry, soft one inside to wipe off any remaining wetness from being outside in the rain or snow. It's just a matter of wiping your shoes thoroughly before stepping on the floor. It's not like I go inside and track sand/salt around.

I appreciated how it was normal in S. Korea for everyone to take off shoes that had been in public bathrooms, train stations etc before entering a home. Clean socks or house shoes are much better.
