I test rode both. Bought the 1250. Its does everything I want a bike to do, better than the S1000R. Its an incredible all-rounder. You can even get a nice tall windscreen and tour on it.
I won't call buying the S1000R a mistake because it gave my high speed thrills the 1250 probably can't, but in most situations I think the 1250 will suit me better. I'm already picturing going on a tour with a larger screen then getting to my destination and bolting on the sports screen so I can go and have a play 😁
I traded in a street triple for a R1200R Sport over a year ago. (Similar not exactly the same but fundamentals still apply) Never looked back. R1200R is better all round on the road for day to day stuff. Comfort no comparison., Torque on tap . Its a weapon without the song and dance which I love. Understated.. There is 10% of the time though when I would love a blast on a triple or inline 4 for the high end rush, but 90% of day to day stuff the R1200R is a nicer better bike. No Chain Maintenance either & the weight is not an issue due to the Boxer low center of gravity. R1200R is much nicer in car parks at slow speed. If you miss the S1000R pick up something a few years older for the Sunday Morning blast. R1250R IMO (If you can afford it).
Cheers Eric a definite thumbs up for the boxer there! It's torque I'm a big fan of and the 1250 pretty much has it in all the right places. The 1200 is very similar to the 1250 in terms of chassis from what I understand and isn't even far behind on power. I think the two bikes are pretty close other than the Shiftcam making the newer bike more eager to rev near the top end. Shaft drive is a biggy too and I can't think of any other fast road bike not from BMW that has a shaft. I have never been good with chain maintenance so to be able to forget about chains in a strong point in the BMWs favour 👍

I’ve had R1250R for 9 months. The grunt throughout the rpm range is just amazing. It’s smooth, relatively quiet (although the Akro does a lovely burble coming back down to 1st) but the torque, whenever you want it, seems endless. I’m so glad I did it. I was originally tempted by the higher bhp offerings out there but in real world riding this is epic, immediate grunt. Thoroughly recommended.
I love the burbles from the S1000 too but the R1250 sounds amazing when auto-blipping down the box 😊 Do you find that the R1250 vibrates if you keep the revs over 5000 rpm or so? That's one thing that has been mentioned that I can't remember noticing it on my test ride. Cheers!
@@RikkyTang No, I haven’t. To be honest I’ve always been 4cyl before this and was a bit “prejudiced” against twins, especially boxer. But it’s the complete opposite of my expectations, so smooth. The QS is unnoticeable and effortless EXCEPT 1st to 2nd. That’s a bit clunky but the others sublime.

Yes it's the torque that stuck in my mind with this bike, plus the dash and connectivity, the well-behaved, no maintenance/no muck shaft drive... the list goes on! I wish it had modern LED main/low beams but that's about the only thing I think is missing from the bike!
@@RikkyTang Agreed. LED would be better. I’m hopeful there will be an aftermarket solution at some point. TFT is a real plus. So clear and intuitive. It’s hard picking a bike these days. Just sold my R1200GSA. Biggest mistake i made was purchasing one. Absolutely hated it. Loved the boxer though. My new 1250R SE Triple black arrives next week. Super excited.
I bought a ‘20 R1250R last year, and it’s the best bike I’ve ever owned by a large margin (and I’ve owned a good number of bikes) for all the reasons you mention and more. As you say, there aren’t many Cons associated with the R1250R, save for mirrors that blur a bit at 5000 RPM, but they are unfelt. It sure sounds to me like it’d be the right bike for you and the type of riding you want to do.
Yeah the more I think about it the more appealing the bike gets! There literally isn't an alternative sporty litre or litre+ bike out there with great torque and shaft drive unless you go for the RS instead (and I prefer the R out of the two models). Thanks for taking the time to write in 😊

But to be honest it's a case of whatever suits you the most - he loves the RS and wouldn't consider an R due to the lack of weather protection. I'm inching closer to signing up to a new R - just trying to nail down the right spec 😊
As an owner of the 1250r, all i have to say is... do it. The girl will not let you down. And in regard to moving it about in the yard... are you buying it as something to push around or to ride? When you bought the car, did you ever consider how hard it is to get in and out of, or how hard it is to push when you have a flat tyre? You would buy it for riding... not for pushing :)
Hi Ed, well the good news is that I have one now (there are a couple of videos on my channel). Loving it so far! As for pushing it around... the weight is one of the reasons I sold my 1250 Bandit so obviously different people have different priorities 😊
Enjoyed your video very much. Had a similar decision to make between the XR 1000 and the R 1250 RS. I was originally sold on the XR until I tried a demo R1250 R my dealer had here in Italy . I fell in love with the motor but I do tour occasionally so I opted for the RS which I’ve had for 4 months now and love it more each ride.
Yeah the latest boxer engine is a bit special isn't it. The rest of the bike (as an R or RS) is pretty sweet too! I hope you enjoy many happy miles together 😊
You sum up the riding experience perfectly. It’s not all about HP figures and testers screaming around a track. I discovered the joys of the original BMW R1200R LC back in 2015 and after a disappointing test ride on the ‘pretty’ but much inferior Mandello I’m resigned to the fact the only bike that will give the same amount of pleasure I still get on my bike is the BMW R1250R. I’m no bm fan boy and would love something different but like you say this bike fits my style perfectly. It also tours. I’ve been as far as Bulgaria and Gibraltar in total comfort
Mate, have you looked at the *new* 2021 S1000R? Even lighter than your S1000R, with a flatter and stronger torque curve throughout the rev range, top-of-the-line electronics, better steering lock, a tweaked chassis and suspension and an overall look that's closer to the R1250R than to the questionable asymmetry of the 2019 S1000R (those headlights were an eyesore). What's not to like?
Hi MotoZest. yep I considered the new S1000R and I saw the launch and all the specs... but ultimately, I've realised that I want more midrange punch than even the new S1000R can offer (it's still a 1000cc inline four after all and BMW can't make miracles unless they supercharge it lol) plus I also decided that along with more midrange I wanted a more comfortable riding position & not such a firmly suspended bike. Oh, and better luggage capability! The new model is still based on a S1000RR after all and although my bike has been great, I think its time for something that is still rapid but where the best performance easier to get at. Plus I want more comfort and stability in the chassis and the boxer-engined R1250 with D-ESA is amazingly stable in long fast bends - you should try it if you haven't! And besides, I loved the "mad man" look of the old model and I wished they had kept it 🤪😁
@@RikkyTang You cannot look at torque figures in isolation, man. The R1250R weighs 45kg (99lbs) more than the S1000R with the M Package. That is A LOT! The peak torque-to-weight ratio of the S1000R is 0.59Nm/kg, the R1250R's is 0.60Nm/kg. Sure, the R1250R achieves that peak torque at a lower rpm, but the values are pretty much identical. Even with you on top - let's assume you weigh 75kgs in full gear - the R1250R TtW ratio is only 0.03Nm/kg higher (0.45Nm/kg vs 0.42Nm/kg). In terms of suspension firmness, with the E-DDC of the S1000R you can have it as firm or as soft as you want, it adapts to the road conditions in milliseconds and you have that stability in long fast bends you so much enjoy on the R1250R. Now, if you want something easier, something more sedate, I get it. Who knows, I might want the same when I reach your age. For now I prefer them newer, svelter, nippier and wilder😜

That’s dedication! What can I say man… I’ve ridden my bike and I’ve ridden the R1250R and on the road where it matters (not just on the spec sheet), the R1250R pulls harder in the midrange. Plus it sounds better doing it 😁 BMW say the new R model is better in the midrange now and that’s great (if the longer 4th, 5th and 6th gear ratios don’t cancel out the improvements 🤔) but it’s just not just talking about numbers on a spec sheet or in promotional material like you did with the electronic suspension - it’s about *feel* and *emotion* . The S100R certainly ticked a few boxes for me but I can say now that the R1250R is more “my kind of bike” and for a number of different reasons it will make me smile more often 😊
I have a R1200GS and I also think about these two machines. The power of the four sounds good, but the torque is the heartbreaker for everyday use. I cant wait for the first warm days for a testride... Greetings from Germany.
Lovely dilemma to have! The only bit you didn't bring up is the warranty which with a new bike will presumably give you another 3 years. Good luck with your choice.
I have to say my 17 S1000R has never had the weaving issue. That said, came to this as I looking to upgrade the S1000, which I have had since new and ridden for just under 55000km. Apart from the hyper nakeds- Super Duke, Tuono and Streetfighter, always had my eye on the R9T but the R1250R has recently caught my eye …thanks for this, very helpful
All the way through, I was thinking speed triple then you said it :-) I think it might be worth a test ride. I doubt if it would be missing the midrange being a trademark of the triple engine. Having owned several bmws and triumphs, I have found the build quality better on the triumphs. When I sold my r1200r last year, I found paint peeling on the throttle housings and rear spring starting to corrode on a 4 year old bike. My 2011 speed triple is showing no such signs of aging and gets ridden all year round. I realized the other day that is is still on its original chain at 16000 miles. A point to consider though... new speed triple will be built is Thailand. Hopefully that won’t affect quality. I like your analytical thinking. Go with what makes you happy now. Thanks for your reply Andrew 😊 I can't believe that through the whole video I didn't mention shaft drive! That is quite a big positive for me. I'd love to stop having to think about chain maintenance, because I am very bad at it!! I did test ride a 2019 Speed Triple but unfortunately the engine didn't impress me very much. The handling was amazing and the power felt great when I rode it but then in comparison the R1250R and S1000R I rode afterwards impressed me more. I'm sure the new model is an improvement and yes it probably does deserve a test ride. It's a shame to hear that the finish quality on your R1200R was starting to suffer. That is a worry - BMW's quality of finish does seem variable between different models. I do worry about those cylinder heads being out in the breeze and I think those leading surfaces would probably benefit from some protection.
I'm buying me a 22' R1250 GSA, 22' M1000 RR, and highly considering the 22' R1250 R. All of them are such beautifully bikes and I want all of them, lol, I think this just settled my decision on the R1250 R, thanks for making this video man, did good 👍

Great vid ..... went to try the R1250R .... again from a bandit 1250 ended up buying a R1250GSA love the thing to bit's. With a main stand I got my self a motorbike turn table of eBay. Ride into garage put on the main stand a very light push on back and walk the bike around. Job done lol
As you might know by now, I did get the R1250R in the end! Only about 35 miles on the clock so far... I can't wait to learn what this bike is all about! That GSA must be pretty amazing to own too 😊 I like the idea of the turntable but I haven't got space in the shed! It might work outside in front of the shed but then the ground there is on a slight incline. Something to think about though! 👍
I've just bought a R1250R and I concure with what you say, on paper its not impressive, on UK public roads its hard to beat as a package. I love the way you can waft around on very little throttle and that exhaust note is deep and very mellow which sounds great without winding up the locals.
@@RikkyTang I got mine a year old with the Akropovic exhaust which sounds lovely and is much lighter then the OEM looks great too, also it had the Option 719 wheels fitted and the whole thing on a 2021 Sport really lifts how it looks.
Have you had a chance to test the R1250R with the "sport" handlebar giving a bit more forward lean ? Currently riding the S100R -17 and while loving the driving position, I´m not a big fan of the screaming inline-4. Used to own the previous R1200R, however the neutral upright position there wasn´t my favourite.. Would be nice to know if the new R´s sport handlebar gives more S1000R kind of sportier feeling.
@@RikkyTang Would love to be able to give you a report but the only BMW dealer (yes there’s only one) in Western Australia has no R1250R or S1000XR in stock!!! Doesn’t know when new stock will be available. You don’t know how spoilt for choice you are in the UK.
You make some good points and I like your format - pro vs con. I tested several bikes before buying the s1000r in 2018 one of which was the water cooled r1200r. I still think about the boxer motor as it excellent for roadster style riding like you describe. I'm looking to get another bike now and the 1250 looks good as there are some deals on 2020 models (while they last). ALSO, I haven't noticed the weave but haven't been on track with the s1000r. Am also thinking of a true sport bike for track use as I've ridden s1000rr's on track and they worked well for me. My biggest dilemma in buying next bike is for me the s1000r has been an excellent bike that is loads of fun.
I do think a pure track bike would be a good idea if I could justify and afford it (it doesn't even have to be a full on race rep - just something good on track on not too expensive). The S1KR weave certainly doesn't affect everybody but I've had it on road as well as at the track and like a few others I just can't dial it out fully, even after adding the Ohlins steering damper. It was one of the nails in the coffin I'm afraid! But like you say, if you can't pick any weak points in the bike then it will be hard to come up with a replacement that is appreciably better anywhere. Either way I hope you enjoy the coming riding season 👍

It turns out that if the key is close to the bike, then it can keep the Immobiliser "awake" because it's expecting the bike to be turned on and that can drain the bikes battery. I'm looking forward to getting this bike run in so I can use it properly - sure it's quite a different bike and a different vibe to the S1000, and so I think they could live together under the same roof! 😊

Any update? I had a go on the R1250GS last year. Was a little tall and heavy for me but the boxer engine was something else. I am fed up of chain maintenance. Might make the move myself soon 👍
I will record another video today but no huge news yet! I am keen on the 1250 though and I have a week to decide what to do before some of the discounts expire on the bike. I will talk about chains vs shaft on the new video... I forgot to mention that on the first one! Shaft is big selling point for me 😊
Nice video. I don't really like twins, so the S1000R for me. But I'm going to try and test the new speed triple, I do miss the sound of my MT09 though. Plus the extra grunt. I'm sure the new speed triple will be quite different to the current version. I was looking forward to the new s1000r, but I think BMW have dropped the ball with the new version. Plus if you spec out the first new s1000r out to the speed triple, it's not to far out, and as people say the build quality of BMW, is pretty poor. I'll have to see what the triple rides like and what I get in px. You could always wait until the summer, as I'm sure a similar deal will turn up, and there might be a couple of new models out. Looking forward to see what you decide.
I was interested in the new S1000R and I might even have made allowances for the footpegs lol but the styling is a bit of a let down after our model and I was hoping (but not expecting) a bigger improvement in the midrange than whats been shown in the press bumph so far. It's still very much a naked S1000RR and personally I think I'm now looking for something a bit more relaxed (but still rapid!) I should take a look at the Speedy to be honest and like you suggest, if I wait till summer there may be other deals to be had. The problem is I'm an impatient bugger when something like a new bike purchase comes over the horizon I get a bit obsessed about it until my decision is made!
At this point i'd suggest you to try the flat boxer engine.... you gonna leave them all !!! I owned 4 cylinder 2 and 3 cylinder as well but man !! Boxer engine is a minde blowing no comparison at all you'll need a seat belt to stay seated on !! I ' ve seen liter bikes being eaten alive with a guy that only had short pants tennis shoes an t-shirt when those bikers were wearing a space shuttle sut !! 😂😂😅

I'm in a similar predicament. I've had my first BMW (f900r) for coming up to two years soon and want something with a bit more grunt. Even if other bikes are "better" the aftersales and general ownership experience with BMW has been light years ahead of any other bike I've owned, so I'm going to keep it in the family so to speak.
Some people don't seem to have a good experience with BMW but like you, I haven't had any big issues so I'm happy to stick with them too and I really am enjoying the bike I've got 👍
@@RikkyTang granted, I'm in Perth, Australia and my local dealer is also a BMW car dealer that rolls out the red carpet every time I go in, in the same manner as they do for someone buying an M5. Customer service costs nothing and goes an insanley long way.
hehe, your dilemma sounds familiar to mine! i got a tuono - this bike lives up only on its engine, sound and chassis. horrible in the city. fan gets on on the first stopping light, clutch heavy to pull, steering angle a joke, lights in the night so bad a.s.o.. but out on the open road (or on the race track) you dont want to get off the bike. the latest super duke r should be better in many respects - but i still hesitate to make a change...
I know right, why can't the perfect bike just be... perfect!! 😂 The Aprilia sounds like hard work more than 50% of the time... maybe time to start shopping around my friend!

I kinda got sick of 4 cylinder in general they all performing pretty much the same way sometimes even 2 cylinder..... but let me say that the boxer engine has his own character , personality , soul , which you can definitely feel it she's out off ordinary motorcycle ..... so 1250 for ever !!
I also understand your dilemma, Interested you did not consider the ever popular Ninja 1000SX which is on my short list and is cheaper by 10k in Australia than the BMW
Hi Graeme, the Ninja 1000SX did cross my mind because I enjoyed my test ride on it (I have a video on my channel in case you haven't seen it). But for one thing that would mean having chain drive again and I really felt like owning something that didn't need chain maintenance for a change (because I am very bad at it!) Plus the midrange of the Ninja can't compete with the boxer engine and I love a strong midrange!
A slight time travel comment here Ricky, but I wonder how you'd feel, or would have felt, if the S1000R came with a shift cam engine, not only to compete with other hyper nakeds, but for more midrange punch ? When younger. I used to change bikes every year but now at 64, I'm done with all the hassle of it and have stuck with a dynoed and suspension modded 2004 reg. Suzuki SV1000 for the last 16 years ! I feel that 120 BHP crank horsepower and a dry weight of 400 lbs is good enough for the road.
Hi Michael, a nice hypothetical question to chew on, thanks for this! I think that if my S1000R had the midrange power of the R1250R (and it wouldn't even need any more top-end), I may still own it now and possibly spent money on the suspension to improve that aspect of the bike. But sadly I believe that the shift cam was designed to give the S1000RR more top-end power rather than give it more low-end power... so giving the shift cam to the single-R model would not really improve the bike in the low/midrange (the way Shift Cam is currently designed anyway). Now there is a inline four-cylinder bike that does have a lot of midrange... the Kawasaki Z-H2! However at even lower revs (about 3000rpm) the R1250R is still making about 20ftlbs more torque than the Kawasaki and that is also an important advantage to the BMW as far as I'm concerned! The Kawasaki doesn't leap forward at 3000rpm like the 1250 does. About 120hp and 400lbs does sounds great, as long as it is also combined with a nice flat torque curve of around 90 ftlbs 😃Oh, and ideally shaft drive too!
@@RikkyTang All in all, I think you've made a wise choice. My bike can't match yours for torque, mine's about 70 ish ft lbs, and I do envy the shaft drive and tall gearing. Not sure how I'd cope with the additional weight though, when manhandling. I'm a mere 9 stone 5 and have seen battery chickens with thicker legs than mine. I do get out more though ! @@michaelarchangel1163 I have to admit the manhandling side of it is one of its few downsides and it's nearly got away from me on one occasion when pushing around in the shed. I'm a long, long way from Charles Atlas myself haha! I have always had a things for SV's though and I remember seeing a photo of a custom one with burgundy chassis/wheels and silver bodywork... it was just 😍 I've been over your side of the country once or twice, to Laugharne and Saundersfoot - must get back that way again next year!
Nice one came to this late cos I know what you did but I get it I don't really like revving the nuts out of an engine either .The deal looks ok and if ya can afford it why not ,temptation is a dangerous and terrible when it comes to bikes if you've got the bug . You did a couple of reviews on board a ZH2 which i got the impression you liked a lot, plenty of midrange grunt etc!! Any reason your not considering one of those instead ? Good riding position, plenty power/grunt, good at low speeds and high speed,seems like a good allrounder. I had a R1200RS couple years back, thought it was great bike, awesome handling, good power, comfortable etc. Sold it after 2 summers as the agricultural feel of the gearbox and engine bugged me lot. Quick shifter was not very predictable either. I traded in for an almost new BMW K1300s anniversary. Awesome bike if a bit long and big. But much better quick shifter and smoother power delivery. Be careful with the BMW boxers, above 5000rpms quiet lot of vibes also, which gets tiresome over time.
I was considering a K1300R too back in 2019! And although I was looking at the R1250R as well, in my mind I was really trying to get away from a bike that felt heavy like my 1250 Bandit. In the end the S1000R won that battle 😊 The R1250 gearbox/quickshifter felt slick on my test ride but perhaps jolted a little in the lower gears. Hopefully it doesn't get any worse! Yes I do like the ZH2 a lot but I felt that the suspension especially at the rear was a bit basic… now the new SE has much improved suspension it ticks a lot of boxes! The one it doesn’t tick is price which is why it sadly didn’t get a mention… it’s about £4000 more expensive than the discounted R1250R. The other thing I also noted at the time is that before the supercharger starts to kick in the bike is “just” a 1000cc inline four and the torque at the bottom end is OK but not anything special.
I like the Tuono 1100 a lot... I have a test ride video on my channel. The main thing stopping me from buying one is my lack of self-control... just like with the Kawasaki ZH2 and H2SX, I would end up riding too fast too often because we all know where in the revs these bikes perform best! I know myself and I'd end up with a ban. With the 1250 I have a huge low and midrange but I'm not tempted to the top of the revs (very often). It's more than fast enough for UK roads! Having said all that... never say never 😎😜
Excellent video! I stumbled on to this video because I have been trying to see if there are any updates on the R 1250R 2021 model. I assume you are going to get the 2020 model because in the US I do not see the 2021. Anyway, excellent process that you are going through. Does going from chain to shaft drive matter? How comfortable is the S1000R bike? I currently own a Police Road King, which is a heavy bike and would like something lighter and an all arounder like the R1250 R. When will you decide and can you update us on your decision?
Hi Paul I'm glad you enjoyed my video! I am planning to record an update video today actually - no big decision yet! But I think I'm leaning towards the 1250... yes shaft drive is a big one really - I can't believe I didn't mention it in this video! I have never liked adjusting/maintaining chains TBH. The S1000R "OK" for comfort... it's a firmly suspended bike but the riding position is not too bad other than the legs being a bit cramped - I did buy 20mm bar risers though which let me sit a bit more upright. The discounts for the R1250 starts to reduce at the end of Feb so I have a week to decide if I want this bike - if I leave it later than that then I may keep the S1000R a little longer while I consider my options.

Can't afford any more shiny bits at the moment! Well I did buy some handguards so a vid about those will come out before long. Really enjoying the bike though! It's all I hoped it would be so far 😁
I'm sorry I missed your comment! The bike is very stable in the curves in my experierince. It's certinaly not as quick steering or as agile as the S1000R but to be honest I like the added stability and sure-footedness of the R1250 😊
Mate, I have the s1000r 2019 model. I had it tuned by BMW racing. I must stay it's a shame the 2021 'update' didn't evolve what was an awesome platform. It needed more torque & HP. 120NM of torque & 170HP were figures that are achievable with the s1000rr engine platform. The s1000r should be the hyper-naked of its big brother (the s1000rr) whilst keeping pace with KTM, Ducati & Aprilia who have all produced true "hyper-naked" models for 2021+. BMW have let themselves down & the entire concept of the s1000r with their update. I hope they correct themselves asap. I'd stay with your 2019 s1000r.
Yeah BMW has changed a lot of things with the latest model, expect the thing people wanted the most! Maybe in a year or two the engine will get the shiftcam upgrade it deserves. For me though I think ultimately, I'm looking for something different now; with more midrange than even the new S1KR can muster (among other things)... so my S1KR is gone and I have a new R1250R now 😀
my question is btw s1000r, s1000xr ,r1250r which one is best for everyday ride, long distance ride,less maintenance, bike for forever. my s1000rr have too much problem, even after having recall service. i run about 15000mile per yr.
You run a lot more miles per year than I do! I do maybe 4/5000 miles a year. Personally between the S1000R and R1250R I would go for the R1250. Shaft drive, more comfortable. and those boxer engines are pretty well proven (expect perhaps for the Shiftcam technology because it's quite new but I haven't heard any scare stories yet). One downside of the 1250 is the poor-performing halogen headlight unit IMO. The S1000XR could be a better long distance bike due to the fairing but I think you would need to take an extended test ride because of the seat... once you are sat in it you can't really move around. However I have heard that once you get used to it the seat is actually good for long distances.

I took my gen 2 in for a service they loaned me the new gen 3 for 5 hours got back to the dealer and bought the new gen 3 it’s amazing totally different machine to the gen 2
I've done a test ride on the Gen 3 (review is on my channel) and you are right it is a big step up from my gen 2 and I do like it a lot. However I'm just a sucker for lots of torque and the gen 3 still wouldn't have cut it for me. But perhaps I'm just going through a phase lol and what I want from a bike may change again in the future! I hope you have an awesome time on yours 👍

@@adamrakoczi I'm only deciding between keeping my current S1000R (because it doesn't cost me a lot of money) or going for the 1250... the 2021 S1000R doesn't do it for me I'm sorry to say - the best bit of the power is still too high up the rev range and the bike will still be very much like a naked RR. My next bike will be more road focussed with a fat midrange like the 1250 😁
@@RikkyTang I totally agree! I wish the best decision for you! BMW is a great manufacturer with great bikes. Both of them are perfect as I think. :) And let I say another manufacturer: TRIUMPH! You should maybe try the Triumph Speed Triple RS. ;) It has good midrange optimized power, with 3 cylinders and 125 HP, with amazing and smooth QS and the handling is fantastic! ;)
Just came through my dilemma moving from the 2018 BMW S1000R. I went for for a 2021 S1000RR (bought in late Dec where all dealers offer very good deals). I am 58 years old but need to get the hooligan and track days out of my system; you only live once right? Common sense says the R1250 but who needs that. I will reevaluate in 4 years and maybe, just maybe I may have learned some common sense (but I hope not).
These dilemmas have a habit of coming at you in about half of the estimated time-frame, so be prepared! I know that if the rumoured new 1300 boxers get released later this year my savings account is going to get a sweat on... The R1250R can get spanked around the track though and it's a lot of fun but the RR will do an infinitely better job of it! The low-down grunt of the 1250 engine on the road is really hard to beat though.
Another option Ricky. ZH2 Kawasaki. These have incredible low to mid range punch and a mind blowing top end. They are easy to ride and really docile at low speeds. It carries it's weight really well and is comfy. You might be able to find a used low mileage one now, so worth a look.
I've ridden the ZH2 twice actually and the mid range is clearly awesome but the low end (1500 - 3000 rpm) I'd honestly class as "decent" - it's just another 1000cc inline four until the supercharger starts kicking in. Personally speaking, reasons against the ZH2 largely revolve around the fact that it's chain drive (I mention my dislike of chians in this or the other videos), the fact that the power is just so addictive that I'll almost certainly get myself banned, and one annoying thing for me is that you can't export any of the telemetry from the Kawasaki phone app to another device such as my PC. It's just stuck in the app and that is frustrating! Oh, and the 2021 SE model which I'd want costs about £4k more than the BMW. (and while the BM has less horsepower it actually has slightly more torque and it's a little lower down the rev range which is a good thing!).
The S100r is a big motorcycle, but usable on the circuit. The R 1250R despite being in the shade for GS and RT and another Rs,, is a PERFECT MOTORCYCLE. I had one and I want to buy the 1250 R
Definitely R1250R i just test ride today, but I'll wait for the full Led headlight update, coz her brother which is the R1250RS has got an update for full Led headlight!
Yes I have to agree about the headlight - it's disappointing that the main lights are not LED when the rest of the bike's electronics are so up to date 😕
What if I do that but then it doesn't solve the weaves on the first attempt and I have to chnage it again? Or what if the oil isn't the problem? No, I'm afraid that I don't want to go down that road - I'd rather have a bike that just handles properly out the box.
I think you already made the choice and the S1000R it’s going away but you will miss it after 😅. On the more torque for less beans I got 6 series twin turbo diesel remaped on HP and it’s 1 year away from being mine. Got her when it 3 years old and now the S1000R on HP as well 😂 I’m so glad that I don’t have kids 😅
That car of yours sounds like it has epic torque! I've always had a thing for the Alpina XD3 - I'm sure that could be given a load of extra poke too 😍 I feel like I've pretty much plumped for the R1250... although my sensible side says "sell the S1000 back to BMW and spend the summer auditioning your next bike". Sounds like a good idea but I'm so bloody impatient 😂 P.S. Childfree is the way to be! 👍😁
I can sense you're inclined to the R1250R. For all the reasons you've stated it will be an enjoyable ride. If you pass on the R1250R you are in essence buying the S1000R all over again, albeit at a lower price. That's the only real argument for staying with the 1000. We are running out of February. Let us know what you decide

Well the R version is already 10 - 15 KG heavier than I really want it to be and the RS is a bit heavier again. Together with the lighter weight, the R also has a shorter wheelbase, lower final gearing and a better riding position for me (more upright) which all adds up to more fun in my book! 😁

@@MsDenver2 Yes sure, it's a 1989 Honda NT650 Bros - unofficial import to the UK (we had the less interesting Revere instead). 647cc V-twin. I fell for it when I forst saw one in a magazine in the mid 90's and I finally got one in 2015. They never sold in huge numbers but have a bit of a cult following - not many examples are left standard!
It doesn't feel heavy when riding it, but does really heavy when pushing the bike around with the engine switched off - that the biggest downside with the bike for me.
I test rode both. Bought the 1250. Its does everything I want a bike to do, better than the S1000R. Its an incredible all-rounder. You can even get a nice tall windscreen and tour on it.
I won't call buying the S1000R a mistake because it gave my high speed thrills the 1250 probably can't, but in most situations I think the 1250 will suit me better. I'm already picturing going on a tour with a larger screen then getting to my destination and bolting on the sports screen so I can go and have a play 😁
I traded in a street triple for a R1200R Sport over a year ago. (Similar not exactly the same but fundamentals still apply) Never looked back. R1200R is better all round on the road for day to day stuff. Comfort no comparison., Torque on tap . Its a weapon without the song and dance which I love. Understated.. There is 10% of the time though when I would love a blast on a triple or inline 4 for the high end rush, but 90% of day to day stuff the R1200R is a nicer better bike. No Chain Maintenance either & the weight is not an issue due to the Boxer low center of gravity. R1200R is much nicer in car parks at slow speed. If you miss the S1000R pick up something a few years older for the Sunday Morning blast. R1250R IMO (If you can afford it).
Cheers Eric a definite thumbs up for the boxer there! It's torque I'm a big fan of and the 1250 pretty much has it in all the right places. The 1200 is very similar to the 1250 in terms of chassis from what I understand and isn't even far behind on power. I think the two bikes are pretty close other than the Shiftcam making the newer bike more eager to rev near the top end.
Shaft drive is a biggy too and I can't think of any other fast road bike not from BMW that has a shaft. I have never been good with chain maintenance so to be able to forget about chains in a strong point in the BMWs favour 👍

I’ve had R1250R for 9 months. The grunt throughout the rpm range is just amazing. It’s smooth, relatively quiet (although the Akro does a lovely burble coming back down to 1st) but the torque, whenever you want it, seems endless. I’m so glad I did it. I was originally tempted by the higher bhp offerings out there but in real world riding this is epic, immediate grunt. Thoroughly recommended.
I love the burbles from the S1000 too but the R1250 sounds amazing when auto-blipping down the box 😊 Do you find that the R1250 vibrates if you keep the revs over 5000 rpm or so? That's one thing that has been mentioned that I can't remember noticing it on my test ride. Cheers!
@@RikkyTang No, I haven’t. To be honest I’ve always been 4cyl before this and was a bit “prejudiced” against twins, especially boxer. But it’s the complete opposite of my expectations, so smooth. The QS is unnoticeable and effortless EXCEPT 1st to 2nd. That’s a bit clunky but the others sublime.

Yes it's the torque that stuck in my mind with this bike, plus the dash and connectivity, the well-behaved, no maintenance/no muck shaft drive... the list goes on! I wish it had modern LED main/low beams but that's about the only thing I think is missing from the bike!

Just sold my R1200GSA. Biggest mistake i made was purchasing one. Absolutely hated it.

I bought a ‘20 R1250R last year, and it’s the best bike I’ve ever owned by a large margin (and I’ve owned a good number of bikes) for all the reasons you mention and more. As you say, there aren’t many Cons associated with the R1250R, save for mirrors that blur a bit at 5000 RPM, but they are unfelt. It sure sounds to me like it’d be the right bike for you and the type of riding you want to do.
Yeah the more I think about it the more appealing the bike gets! There literally isn't an alternative sporty litre or litre+ bike out there with great torque and shaft drive unless you go for the RS instead (and I prefer the R out of the two models). Thanks for taking the time to write in 😊
@@RikkyTang I agree, the ergonomics of the RS are too aggressive and the handling in corners too heavy because of the geometry of the rake/trail.

But to be honest it's a case of whatever suits you the most - he loves the RS and wouldn't consider an R due to the lack of weather protection. I'm inching closer to signing up to a new R - just trying to nail down the right spec 😊
As an owner of the 1250r, all i have to say is... do it. The girl will not let you down. And in regard to moving it about in the yard... are you buying it as something to push around or to ride? When you bought the car, did you ever consider how hard it is to get in and out of, or how hard it is to push when you have a flat tyre?

Enjoyed your video very much. Had a similar decision to make between the XR 1000 and the R 1250 RS. I was originally sold on the XR until I tried a demo R1250 R my dealer had here in Italy . I fell in love with the motor but I do tour occasionally so I opted for the RS which I’ve had for 4 months now and love it more each ride.
Yeah the latest boxer engine is a bit special isn't it. The rest of the bike (as an R or RS) is pretty sweet too! I hope you enjoy many happy miles together 😊
You sum up the riding experience perfectly. It’s not all about HP figures and testers screaming around a track. I discovered the joys of the original BMW R1200R LC back in 2015 and after a disappointing test ride on the ‘pretty’ but much inferior Mandello I’m resigned to the fact the only bike that will give the same amount of pleasure I still get on my bike is the BMW R1250R. I’m no bm fan boy and would love something different but like you say this bike fits my style perfectly. It also tours. I’ve been as far as Bulgaria and Gibraltar in total comfort
R1250R? Don't hesitate to buy! I came from the S1000XR to the R1250R and asked myself only one thing: why didn't I do it like that right away?!

Mate, have you looked at the *new* 2021 S1000R? Even lighter than your S1000R, with a flatter and stronger torque curve throughout the rev range, top-of-the-line electronics, better steering lock, a tweaked chassis and suspension and an overall look that's closer to the R1250R than to the questionable asymmetry of the 2019 S1000R (those headlights were an eyesore). What's not to like?
Hi MotoZest. yep I considered the new S1000R and I saw the launch and all the specs... but ultimately, I've realised that I want more midrange punch than even the new S1000R can offer (it's still a 1000cc inline four after all and BMW can't make miracles unless they supercharge it lol) plus I also decided that along with more midrange I wanted a more comfortable riding position & not such a firmly suspended bike. Oh, and better luggage capability!
The new model is still based on a S1000RR after all and although my bike has been great, I think its time for something that is still rapid but where the best performance easier to get at. Plus I want more comfort and stability in the chassis and the boxer-engined R1250 with D-ESA is amazingly stable in long fast bends - you should try it if you haven't! And besides, I loved the "mad man" look of the old model and I wished they had kept it 🤪😁
@@RikkyTang You cannot look at torque figures in isolation, man. The R1250R weighs 45kg (99lbs) more than the S1000R with the M Package. That is A LOT! The peak torque-to-weight ratio of the S1000R is 0.59Nm/kg, the R1250R's is 0.60Nm/kg. Sure, the R1250R achieves that peak torque at a lower rpm, but the values are pretty much identical. Even with you on top - let's assume you weigh 75kgs in full gear - the R1250R TtW ratio is only 0.03Nm/kg higher (0.45Nm/kg vs 0.42Nm/kg).
In terms of suspension firmness, with the E-DDC of the S1000R you can have it as firm or as soft as you want, it adapts to the road conditions in milliseconds and you have that stability in long fast bends you so much enjoy on the R1250R.
Now, if you want something easier, something more sedate, I get it. Who knows, I might want the same when I reach your age. For now I prefer them newer, svelter, nippier and wilder😜

What can I say man… I’ve ridden my bike and I’ve ridden the R1250R and on the road where it matters (not just on the spec sheet), the R1250R pulls harder in the midrange. Plus it sounds better doing it 😁 BMW say the new R model is better in the midrange now and that’s great (if the longer 4th, 5th and 6th gear ratios don’t cancel out the improvements 🤔) but it’s just not just talking about numbers on a spec sheet or in promotional material like you did with the electronic suspension - it’s about *feel* and *emotion* . The S100R certainly ticked a few boxes for me but I can say now that the R1250R is more “my kind of bike” and for a number of different reasons it will make me smile more often 😊

I too have the 1250GS. The big selling point for me (apart from the boxer engine) is the Telelever front suspension. My God! There's nothing like it!
Lovely dilemma to have! The only bit you didn't bring up is the warranty which with a new bike will presumably give you another 3 years. Good luck with your choice.
Good point about the warranty! Triumph is still 24 months - something to consider.
I have to say my 17 S1000R has never had the weaving issue. That said, came to this as I looking to upgrade the S1000, which I have had since new and ridden for just under 55000km. Apart from the hyper nakeds- Super Duke, Tuono and Streetfighter, always had my eye on the R9T but the R1250R has recently caught my eye …thanks for this, very helpful

All the way through, I was thinking speed triple then you said it :-) I think it might be worth a test ride. I doubt if it would be missing the midrange being a trademark of the triple engine. Having owned several bmws and triumphs, I have found the build quality better on the triumphs. When I sold my r1200r last year, I found paint peeling on the throttle housings and rear spring starting to corrode on a 4 year old bike. My 2011 speed triple is showing no such signs of aging and gets ridden all year round. I realized the other day that is is still on its original chain at 16000 miles. A point to consider though... new speed triple will be built is Thailand. Hopefully that won’t affect quality. I like your analytical thinking. Go with what makes you happy now. You can always change later. My comment nearly as long as your vid. Keep us posted.

I did test ride a 2019 Speed Triple but unfortunately the engine didn't impress me very much. The handling was amazing and the power felt great when I rode it but then in comparison the R1250R and S1000R I rode afterwards impressed me more. I'm sure the new model is an improvement and yes it probably does deserve a test ride.
It's a shame to hear that the finish quality on your R1200R was starting to suffer. That is a worry - BMW's quality of finish does seem variable between different models. I do worry about those cylinder heads being out in the breeze and I think those leading surfaces would probably benefit from some protection.
I'm buying me a 22' R1250 GSA, 22' M1000 RR, and highly considering the 22' R1250 R. All of them are such beautifully bikes and I want all of them, lol, I think this just settled my decision on the R1250 R, thanks for making this video man, did good 👍

Great vid ..... went to try the R1250R .... again from a bandit 1250 ended up buying a R1250GSA love the thing to bit's. With a main stand I got my self a motorbike turn table of eBay. Ride into garage put on the main stand a very light push on back and walk the bike around. Job done lol
As you might know by now, I did get the R1250R in the end! Only about 35 miles on the clock so far... I can't wait to learn what this bike is all about! That GSA must be pretty amazing to own too 😊
I like the idea of the turntable but I haven't got space in the shed! It might work outside in front of the shed but then the ground there is on a slight incline. Something to think about though! 👍
I've just bought a R1250R and I concure with what you say, on paper its not impressive, on UK public roads its hard to beat as a package. I love the way you can waft around on very little throttle and that exhaust note is deep and very mellow which sounds great without winding up the locals.
Yep you get it! Even though I have sportier (ok louder!) Exhaust on most of the time now, it still doesn't scream for attention like 4 cylinder bikes.
@@RikkyTang I got mine a year old with the Akropovic exhaust which sounds lovely and is much lighter then the OEM looks great too, also it had the Option 719 wheels fitted and the whole thing on a 2021 Sport really lifts how it looks.
Have you had a chance to test the R1250R with the "sport" handlebar giving a bit more forward lean ? Currently riding the S100R -17 and while loving the driving position, I´m not a big fan of the screaming inline-4. Used to own the previous R1200R, however the neutral upright position there wasn´t my favourite.. Would be nice to know if the new R´s sport handlebar gives more S1000R kind of sportier feeling.

You make some good points and I like your format - pro vs con. I tested several bikes before buying the s1000r in 2018 one of which was the water cooled r1200r. I still think about the boxer motor as it excellent for roadster style riding like you describe. I'm looking to get another bike now and the 1250 looks good as there are some deals on 2020 models (while they last). ALSO, I haven't noticed the weave but haven't been on track with the s1000r. Am also thinking of a true sport bike for track use as I've ridden s1000rr's on track and they worked well for me. My biggest dilemma in buying next bike is for me the s1000r has been an excellent bike that is loads of fun.
I do think a pure track bike would be a good idea if I could justify and afford it (it doesn't even have to be a full on race rep - just something good on track on not too expensive). The S1KR weave certainly doesn't affect everybody but I've had it on road as well as at the track and like a few others I just can't dial it out fully, even after adding the Ohlins steering damper. It was one of the nails in the coffin I'm afraid!
But like you say, if you can't pick any weak points in the bike then it will be hard to come up with a replacement that is appreciably better anywhere. Either way I hope you enjoy the coming riding season 👍

It turns out that if the key is close to the bike, then it can keep the Immobiliser "awake" because it's expecting the bike to be turned on and that can drain the bikes battery.
I'm looking forward to getting this bike run in so I can use it properly - sure it's quite a different bike and a different vibe to the S1000, and so I think they could live together under the same roof! 😊

Any update? I had a go on the R1250GS last year. Was a little tall and heavy for me but the boxer engine was something else. I am fed up of chain maintenance. Might make the move myself soon 👍
I will record another video today but no huge news yet! I am keen on the 1250 though and I have a week to decide what to do before some of the discounts expire on the bike. I will talk about chains vs shaft on the new video... I forgot to mention that on the first one! Shaft is big selling point for me 😊
Nice video. I don't really like twins, so the S1000R for me. But I'm going to try and test the new speed triple, I do miss the sound of my MT09 though. Plus the extra grunt. I'm sure the new speed triple will be quite different to the current version.
I was looking forward to the new s1000r, but I think BMW have dropped the ball with the new version. Plus if you spec out the first new s1000r out to the speed triple, it's not to far out, and as people say the build quality of BMW, is pretty poor.
I'll have to see what the triple rides like and what I get in px.
You could always wait until the summer, as I'm sure a similar deal will turn up, and there might be a couple of new models out.

I was interested in the new S1000R and I might even have made allowances for the footpegs lol but the styling is a bit of a let down after our model and I was hoping (but not expecting) a bigger improvement in the midrange than whats been shown in the press bumph so far. It's still very much a naked S1000RR and personally I think I'm now looking for something a bit more relaxed (but still rapid!)
I should take a look at the Speedy to be honest and like you suggest, if I wait till summer there may be other deals to be had. The problem is I'm an impatient bugger when something like a new bike purchase comes over the horizon I get a bit obsessed about it until my decision is made!

At this point i'd suggest you to try the flat boxer engine.... you gonna leave them all !!! I owned 4 cylinder 2 and 3 cylinder as well but man !! Boxer engine is a minde blowing no comparison at all you'll need a seat belt to stay seated on !!

I'm in a similar predicament.
I've had my first BMW (f900r) for coming up to two years soon and want something with a bit more grunt.
Even if other bikes are "better" the aftersales and general ownership experience with BMW has been light years ahead of any other bike I've owned, so I'm going to keep it in the family so to speak.
Some people don't seem to have a good experience with BMW but like you, I haven't had any big issues so I'm happy to stick with them too and I really am enjoying the bike I've got 👍
@@RikkyTang granted, I'm in Perth, Australia and my local dealer is also a BMW car dealer that rolls out the red carpet every time I go in, in the same manner as they do for someone buying an M5.

hehe, your dilemma sounds familiar to mine! i got a tuono - this bike lives up only on its engine, sound and chassis. horrible in the city. fan gets on on the first stopping light, clutch heavy to pull, steering angle a joke, lights in the night so bad a.s.o.. but out on the open road (or on the race track) you dont want to get off the bike. the latest super duke r should be better in many respects - but i still hesitate to make a change...
I know right, why can't the perfect bike just be... perfect!! 😂 The Aprilia sounds like hard work more than 50% of the time... maybe time to start shopping around my friend!

I kinda got sick of 4 cylinder in general they all performing pretty much the same way sometimes even 2 cylinder..... but let me say that the boxer engine has his own character , personality , soul , which you can definitely feel it she's out off ordinary motorcycle ..... so 1250 for ever !!
Yeah I think the boxer will certainly have character - I think I might bond with it much more then I have the S1000. We'll see!
I also understand your dilemma, Interested you did not consider the ever popular Ninja 1000SX which is on my short list and is cheaper by 10k in Australia than the BMW
Hi Graeme, the Ninja 1000SX did cross my mind because I enjoyed my test ride on it (I have a video on my channel in case you haven't seen it). But for one thing that would mean having chain drive again and I really felt like owning something that didn't need chain maintenance for a change (because I am very bad at it!) Plus the midrange of the Ninja can't compete with the boxer engine and I love a strong midrange!

A slight time travel comment here Ricky, but I wonder how you'd feel, or would have felt, if the S1000R came with a shift cam engine, not only to compete with other hyper nakeds, but for more midrange punch ? When younger. I used to change bikes every year but now at 64, I'm done with all the hassle of it and have stuck with a dynoed and suspension modded 2004 reg. Suzuki SV1000 for the last 16 years ! I feel that 120 BHP crank horsepower and a dry weight of 400 lbs is good enough for the road.
Hi Michael, a nice hypothetical question to chew on, thanks for this! I think that if my S1000R had the midrange power of the R1250R (and it wouldn't even need any more top-end), I may still own it now and possibly spent money on the suspension to improve that aspect of the bike. But sadly I believe that the shift cam was designed to give the S1000RR more top-end power rather than give it more low-end power... so giving the shift cam to the single-R model would not really improve the bike in the low/midrange (the way Shift Cam is currently designed anyway).
Now there is a inline four-cylinder bike that does have a lot of midrange... the Kawasaki Z-H2! However at even lower revs (about 3000rpm) the R1250R is still making about 20ftlbs more torque than the Kawasaki and that is also an important advantage to the BMW as far as I'm concerned! The Kawasaki doesn't leap forward at 3000rpm like the 1250 does.
About 120hp and 400lbs does sounds great, as long as it is also combined with a nice flat torque curve of around 90 ftlbs 😃Oh, and ideally shaft drive too!
@@RikkyTang All in all, I think you've made a wise choice. My bike can't match yours for torque, mine's about 70 ish ft lbs, and I do envy the shaft drive and tall gearing. Not sure how I'd cope with the additional weight though, when manhandling. I'm a mere 9 stone 5 and have seen battery chickens with thicker legs than mine. I do get out more though !

I'm a long, long way from Charles Atlas myself haha! I have always had a things for SV's though and I remember seeing a photo of a custom one with burgundy chassis/wheels and silver bodywork... it was just 😍

You did a couple of reviews on board a ZH2 which i got the impression you liked a lot, plenty of midrange grunt etc!!
Any reason your not considering one of those instead ? Good riding position, plenty power/grunt, good at low speeds and high speed,seems like a good allrounder.
I had a R1200RS couple years back, thought it was great bike, awesome handling, good power, comfortable etc.
Sold it after 2 summers as the agricultural feel of the gearbox and engine bugged me lot. Quick shifter was not very predictable either.
I traded in for an almost new BMW K1300s anniversary. Awesome bike if a bit long and big. But much better quick shifter and smoother power delivery. Be careful with the BMW boxers, above 5000rpms quiet lot of vibes also, which gets tiresome over time.
I was considering a K1300R too back in 2019! And although I was looking at the R1250R as well, in my mind I was really trying to get away from a bike that felt heavy like my 1250 Bandit. In the end the S1000R won that battle 😊
The R1250 gearbox/quickshifter felt slick on my test ride but perhaps jolted a little in the lower gears. Hopefully it doesn't get any worse!
Yes I do like the ZH2 a lot but I felt that the suspension especially at the rear was a bit basic… now the new SE has much improved suspension it ticks a lot of boxes! The one it doesn’t tick is price which is why it sadly didn’t get a mention… it’s about £4000 more expensive than the discounted R1250R. The other thing I also noted at the time is that before the supercharger starts to kick in the bike is “just” a 1000cc inline four and the torque at the bottom end is OK but not anything special.

I like the Tuono 1100 a lot... I have a test ride video on my channel. The main thing stopping me from buying one is my lack of self-control... just like with the Kawasaki ZH2 and H2SX, I would end up riding too fast too often because we all know where in the revs these bikes perform best!
I know myself and I'd end up with a ban. With the 1250 I have a huge low and midrange but I'm not tempted to the top of the revs (very often). It's more than fast enough for UK roads!

Excellent video! I stumbled on to this video because I have been trying to see if there are any updates on the R 1250R 2021 model. I assume you are going to get the 2020 model because in the US I do not see the 2021. Anyway, excellent process that you are going through. Does going from chain to shaft drive matter? How comfortable is the S1000R bike? I currently own a Police Road King, which is a heavy bike and would like something lighter and an all arounder like the R1250 R. When will you decide and can you update us on your decision?
Hi Paul I'm glad you enjoyed my video! I am planning to record an update video today actually - no big decision yet! But I think I'm leaning towards the 1250... yes shaft drive is a big one really - I can't believe I didn't mention it in this video! I have never liked adjusting/maintaining chains TBH. The S1000R "OK" for comfort... it's a firmly suspended bike but the riding position is not too bad other than the legs being a bit cramped - I did buy 20mm bar risers though which let me sit a bit more upright.
The discounts for the R1250 starts to reduce at the end of Feb so I have a week to decide if I want this bike - if I leave it later than that then I may keep the S1000R a little longer while I consider my options.

I'm sorry I missed your comment! The bike is very stable in the curves in my experierince. It's certinaly not as quick steering or as agile as the S1000R but to be honest I like the added stability and sure-footedness of the R1250 😊
Mate, I have the s1000r 2019 model. I had it tuned by BMW racing. I must stay it's a shame the 2021 'update' didn't evolve what was an awesome platform. It needed more torque & HP. 120NM of torque & 170HP were figures that are achievable with the s1000rr engine platform. The s1000r should be the hyper-naked of its big brother (the s1000rr) whilst keeping pace with KTM, Ducati & Aprilia who have all produced true "hyper-naked" models for 2021+. BMW have let themselves down & the entire concept of the s1000r with their update. I hope they correct themselves asap. I'd stay with your 2019 s1000r.
Yeah BMW has changed a lot of things with the latest model, expect the thing people wanted the most! Maybe in a year or two the engine will get the shiftcam upgrade it deserves. For me though I think ultimately, I'm looking for something different now; with more midrange than even the new S1KR can muster (among other things)... so my S1KR is gone and I have a new R1250R now 😀

You run a lot more miles per year than I do! I do maybe 4/5000 miles a year. Personally between the S1000R and R1250R I would go for the R1250. Shaft drive, more comfortable. and those boxer engines are pretty well proven (expect perhaps for the Shiftcam technology because it's quite new but I haven't heard any scare stories yet). One downside of the 1250 is the poor-performing halogen headlight unit IMO. The S1000XR could be a better long distance bike due to the fairing but I think you would need to take an extended test ride because of the seat... once you are sat in it you can't really move around. However I have heard that once you get used to it the seat is actually good for long distances.

I took my gen 2 in for a service they loaned me the new gen 3 for 5 hours got back to the dealer and bought the new gen 3 it’s amazing totally different machine to the gen 2
I've done a test ride on the Gen 3 (review is on my channel) and you are right it is a big step up from my gen 2 and I do like it a lot. However I'm just a sucker for lots of torque and the gen 3 still wouldn't have cut it for me. But perhaps I'm just going through a phase lol and what I want from a bike may change again in the future! I hope you have an awesome time on yours 👍

@@adamrakoczi I'm only deciding between keeping my current S1000R (because it doesn't cost me a lot of money) or going for the 1250... the 2021 S1000R doesn't do it for me I'm sorry to say - the best bit of the power is still too high up the rev range and the bike will still be very much like a naked RR. My next bike will be more road focussed with a fat midrange like the 1250 😁

You should maybe try the Triumph Speed Triple RS. ;) It has good midrange optimized power, with 3 cylinders and 125 HP, with amazing and smooth QS and the handling is fantastic! ;)

Just came through my dilemma moving from the 2018 BMW S1000R. I went for for a 2021 S1000RR (bought in late Dec where all dealers offer very good deals). I am 58 years old but need to get the hooligan and track days out of my system; you only live once right? Common sense says the R1250 but who needs that. I will reevaluate in 4 years and maybe, just maybe I may have learned some common sense (but I hope not).
These dilemmas have a habit of coming at you in about half of the estimated time-frame, so be prepared! I know that if the rumoured new 1300 boxers get released later this year my savings account is going to get a sweat on...
The R1250R can get spanked around the track though and it's a lot of fun but the RR will do an infinitely better job of it! The low-down grunt of the 1250 engine on the road is really hard to beat though.
Another option Ricky. ZH2 Kawasaki. These have incredible low to mid range punch and a mind blowing top end. They are easy to ride and really docile at low speeds. It carries it's weight really well and is comfy. You might be able to find a used low mileage one now, so worth a look.
I've ridden the ZH2 twice actually and the mid range is clearly awesome but the low end (1500 - 3000 rpm) I'd honestly class as "decent" - it's just another 1000cc inline four until the supercharger starts kicking in. Personally speaking, reasons against the ZH2 largely revolve around the fact that it's chain drive (I mention my dislike of chians in this or the other videos), the fact that the power is just so addictive that I'll almost certainly get myself banned, and one annoying thing for me is that you can't export any of the telemetry from the Kawasaki phone app to another device such as my PC. It's just stuck in the app and that is frustrating! Oh, and the 2021 SE model which I'd want costs about £4k more than the BMW. (and while the BM has less horsepower it actually has slightly more torque and it's a little lower down the rev range which is a good thing!).
The S100r is a big motorcycle, but usable on the circuit. The R 1250R despite being in the shade for GS and RT and another Rs,, is a PERFECT MOTORCYCLE. I had one and I want to buy the 1250 R

Yes I have to agree about the headlight - it's disappointing that the main lights are not LED when the rest of the bike's electronics are so up to date 😕

As an ex BMW R1100S owner I also think the R1250R is the best bike of the whole new R1250 range.
I think the R having the lightest weight makes it the best bet for me too 👍 But I might end up on a GS one day yet!

You can sort your wev all you need to do is put a heavyer oil in the front sus.
What if I do that but then it doesn't solve the weaves on the first attempt and I have to chnage it again? Or what if the oil isn't the problem? No, I'm afraid that I don't want to go down that road - I'd rather have a bike that just handles properly out the box.

I think you already made the choice and the S1000R it’s going away but you will miss it after 😅. On the more torque for less beans I got 6 series twin turbo diesel remaped on HP and it’s 1 year away from being mine. Got her when it 3 years old and now the S1000R on HP as well 😂 I’m so glad that I don’t have kids 😅

I've always had a thing for the Alpina XD3 - I'm sure that could be given a load of extra poke too 😍 I feel like I've pretty much plumped for the R1250... although my sensible side says "sell the S1000 back to BMW and spend the summer auditioning your next bike". I can sense you're inclined to the R1250R. For all the reasons you've stated it will be an enjoyable ride. If you pass on the R1250R you are in essence buying the S1000R all over again, albeit at a lower price. That's the only real argument for staying with the 1000. We are running out of February. Let us know what you decide

Just curious, why didn't you go for the 1250rs?
Well the R version is already 10 - 15 KG heavier than I really want it to be and the RS is a bit heavier again. Together with the lighter weight, the R also has a shorter wheelbase, lower final gearing and a better riding position for me (more upright) which all adds up to more fun in my book! 😁

@@MsDenver2 Yes sure, it's a 1989 Honda NT650 Bros - unofficial import to the UK (we had the less interesting Revere instead). 647cc V-twin. I fell for it when I forst saw one in a magazine in the mid 90's and I finally got one in 2015. They never sold in huge numbers but have a bit of a cult following - not many examples are left standard!
You won’t feel the weight cus of low centre of travertine
It doesn't feel heavy when riding it, but does really heavy when pushing the bike around with the engine switched off - that the biggest downside with the bike for me.

The bike is stiff and if the roads are smooth then the S1000R is excellent in bends. If the roads are rough then it is not so pleasant.
Get the new s1000r
The new S1000R isn't really what I'm looking for - I've got a new R1250R now
