  • If you are interested in purchasing the articulating sockets with balls already installed in them email me at media@tvm.video. We have come up with a better way of doing it by using wooden golf balls instead of rubber, this makes for a bit sturdier setup.
    This Video: www.tulsavideom... for inquiries about the dummy feel free to contact the team that built it using this website address.
    This DIY Dummy video is presented by TVM or the Tulsa Video Magazine. We made this dummy to be used as a universal mannequin for Halloween, Christmas and other holidays made relatively cheap.
    This video on how to make a dummy made from inexpensive house hold parts so we can abuse him until he breaks. Repairs can be made for a few dollars.
    We will be adding a Duct tape Skin soon to this dummy. Stay tuned for the next video.
    This Stunt Dummy Double was a creation of Tulsa Video Magazine's for TVM's "Gabriel."
    The video explains how we made our Dummy's unique Articulating ball joints and PVC Skeleton The dummy video is one of several in our series of how to make a Stunt Dummy Double This Video and the related videos are located in our playlist called "How We Did it".
    All parts are available from your local hardware and sporting goods stores, PVC, Glue, Hose Clamps, Bolts, Nuts Washers and some golf balls.
    Some common tools are necessary as well as access to a grinder and heat gun.
    If you have a different solution feel free to post it.
    The Dummies nicknamed is "John" short for John F. Doe.
    Don't forget to like/comment on our video, we'd love to hear some feedback from you all! Thanks For Watching.

    Would some sort of coupling that is expanded to go around the 1" pipe work for the golf balls instead of having to heat pipe and press something in? Or maybe use a larger size of PVC? Or would the collar still restrict movement since it's not curved like the ball? I wonder if a fernco style fitting would work at all. But the rubber might prevent things from moving.

    • @TulsaVideoMagazine
      @TulsaVideoMagazine  3 года назад +2

      The idea in itself is kind of difficult to achieve since we are trying to be able to get something to both move and lock in location. So there needs to be some resistance, getting a pvc pipe larger than the ball itself would create a little too much freedom for articulation in my opinion. Not sure what a fernco style fitting is so not sure if that's practical or not. Rubber can be a good thing if pressure is allowed to be applied manually.

    • @mycats7321
      @mycats7321 3 года назад

      @@TulsaVideoMagazine A fernco fitting is a rubber coupling that uses metal hose clamps to tighten it on to PVC, ABS, etc in situations where solvent welds are difficult or impossible. You should be able to tighten and loosen the grip with the hose clamps, but being rubber, I'm not sure how much play the ball would get. If you just want to pose it, it might work.

    This is fantastic and I will make this myself. I purchased all the parts and started this morning. But it seems I bought too-short bolts. You don't mention this on the video. I bought 2-inch, and the only way they work is if I suck the bolt head about 1/8 inch or more into the golf ball. But that won't make a difference will it? Also, for the double-articulated joints, how long are those bolts? I went ahead and heated the coupling and pounded the golf ball in without dremmeling the slot first. So, right now the golf ball is loose. Is it that slot that allows the ball to lock into place?
    I am hoping you will reply back ASAP. I need to make this mannequin - and possibly more - for a Thanksgiving/Christmas display this weekend!

    With the 1-1/4 inch PVC do you still have to heat the PVC

    • @TulsaVideoMagazine
      @TulsaVideoMagazine  8 лет назад

      Yes you will still need to heat the PVC. We have found that a heat gun works the best for the heating. The heat allows the PVC to wrap around the ball giving you a secure fit without the secure fit the ball will just pull out with no resistance. Keep in mind that this is the way we did our build. If you find a more creative way to do it we would like to here about it. Our goal in putting out this video was to get people thinking about ways to make the mannequin have full mobility like a human thus giving it a more life like appearance. This was the only way we found to do it affordably it is not necessarily the best way.

    • @TulsaVideoMagazine
      @TulsaVideoMagazine  7 лет назад

      1" PVC is used all throughout our creation, we started with 3/4" PVC all around and had to do a large amount of heating and the balls were a bit hard to insert. Use 1" for the best fit for all pieces of PVC on the design.

    I followed this tutorial to the letter.90% of the joints were too sloppy to hold themselves Together without secondary support mechanisms. The only saving grace of this armature working somewhat is the O rings. The O rings themselves are problematic as flat metal does not like to tighten around a slippery plastic sphere,and that’s if you can cinch it down without the O ring failing mechanically first.Honestly maybe there was a portion of this build I missed but in no way will this manikin stand upright unassisted.You can add vertical supports or you can give it bird feet but you can’t just dress it up and walk away like it was a store dummy.Love the concept but could not replicate.

    Oh thank god I found SOMETHING to help me out. I need to build a skeleton of sorts to display a monster costume, and all I had to work on really was 2x4 wood... which since I don't own a circular saw I really didn't want to do... but I DO have a nifty PVC pipe cutter hand tool I could use! If you could answer my question though, I would be extremely grateful; how much weight can a skeleton like this handle, and if I need to add more weight to it, how could I stabilize it further? Thanks in advance!!

    • @TulsaVideoMagazine
      @TulsaVideoMagazine  5 лет назад +1

      It solely depends on where the weight is distributed. if you center the weight over his torso i'd wager you could hold 15-20lbs with it but if it's heavy on his arms maybe 5lbs would be the max i'd suggest. Of course you could always tighten all of the joints more so than what we have done to give him more stability.

      We spent roughly 300$ but we bought extras, and some incorrect sizes etc. So i'd say you can do this model for about 150$ unless you're planning on casting the head the same way we did. Then you're looking at about 200$ if all is done perfectly.

    zbyszekroyal,
    The bolt head should be burried until the head is flush with the outside of the ball. If you stick it further into the ball it wont necessarily make a difference, but when compressing the ball it could split the ball, so going too far will cause issues. We used 3-1/2" Bolts and ground off the extra length with our bench grinder. The slot is so the joint can articulate further not for keeping the ball in place. We used hose clamps to adjust the joints rigidity after compressing the clamp with our hands. Also, when you are compressing the ball into the socket be sure to use a towel and some water to compress the coupling around the ball while it's still warm, this is what will lock the ball into the socket above everything else, the hose clamp is just for insurance and to keep the joints from moving around on you. Lastly, if you didn't want to use a coupling, you could use 1-1/4" PVC and just pound the balls in directly, this will work the same way as having a coupling on 1" PVC. Just an FYI! Any other questions or do i need to elaborate on anything. Let me know!

    • @zbyszekroyal
      @zbyszekroyal 8 лет назад

      Thank you so much for the prompt and detailed reply! You rock!! However, I'm thinking the 3-1/2" bolt is for the double articulation. I've decided that the only double articulation I want is for shoulders and perhaps one or two other joints. Seeing how my 2" bolt was too short and I had to pull it into the golf ball another 1/2 inch, and judging by what the bolt looked like when you held it up to the camera, I'm thinking the single-articulation bolt is 2 1/2". Am I right?
      And one more thing: why didn't you cut two slots into the coupling instead of having two golf balls? Would two slots be too compromising of the coupling's integrity, and cause it to break?
      Thanks!!!

    • @zbyszekroyal
      @zbyszekroyal 8 лет назад

      On, one more thing. I have all the tools I need except for...... the bench grinder. Any ideas here?

    • @TulsaVideoMagazine
      @TulsaVideoMagazine  8 лет назад

      +zbyszekroyal
      Single articulation is yes 2.5" bolts, also, if you bought the bolts at a hardware store, generally they will exchange them just a helpful hint. The more you cut the coupling the less rigid your structure so to answer your question we found that adding an additional ball to the socket was alot better for rigidity than cutting the coupling up. The reason for the two-balled joint is to allow rotation on one half, and then horizontal and vertical movement on the other.
      If you dont have access to power tools it's possible to use a Hack Saw to cut the bolts off, However this will be a very slow process and they wont be flush, which you could use a file to get them as close to flush as possible. The joints will still rotate, the issue is that the bolts will only rotate until they hit the inside of your coupling, stopping rotation. It's not completely necessary for the inner hip joints or shoulder joints to have a completely flush bolt, you will still get some rotation depending on how much excess bolt you have. The less bolt, the more rotation.
