How to Deal with Scale on your Schefflera (Umbrella Tree)

  • It’s such a time suck removing scale from houseplants with a soapy rag... I’ve been doing it for ten years with this Umbrella Tree, or Schefflera. Finally I received a piece of guidance from exotic tree expert Ryan Hroziencik of The Tropics in Hollywood: remove all the leaves from the plant, and it will grow new leaves that are scale free. The scale babies are so small that even when wiping down the leaves thoroughly, it is impossible to remove every one. Then they will grow, reproduce, and in a couple of months, your tree will be covered once again. I know this from experience.
Ryan has made a name for himself in LA’s botanical scene by chopping and hacking up old specimens, forcing them to produce new tender shoots in order to survive. The result is trees with old inwardly trunks contrasted beautifully with lush new growth. In this manner, he creates plant “sculptures” that take on unique, striking shapes, and stay healthy for years.
In my opinion, Ryan Hroziencik is a modern bonsai master in his own right. When I first met him, I asked him where he learned his techniques. His answer: “School of Hard Knocks.” Sounds like a mentor I can get behind. Here’s hoping he was right about my Schefflera, and if not... maybe he’ll give me a beautiful new bonsai to make up for it...? ;)

I saw your video and tried it. It was my last resort. My plant is now exploding with new growth!! So happy!! Thank you for sharing. It saved my plant!! I should mention that this was my Mom’s and she passed away 10yra ago so it also has such sentimental value for me. ☺️

Do you have a follow up video? I have to do this with my dads umbrella tree that has scale. 😭 he had it for 11 years & it was beautiful. I took it when he passed & im so heartbroken it’s dying. 😭😭

Earlier this year I was given several plants and I was able to identify them using Google search. However, there was one that I could not identify at all. My plant is literally just a 6ft "stick" with the upper half kinda green and the bottom half brown. Until recently, it seems to finally start to have new growth. I came across this video and the moment you took off the leaves, it resembled mine!! (yours is just much greener!) I'm so happy to finally know what kind of plant it is so i can start taking care of it! Thank you!!! I live in Kansas City and the previous owner had this plant indoors in her office. I've kept it indoors since i got it, not sure if it will survive outside. Our summers are very hot and our winters are freezing.

Your alright hun, I hope it grew back quick. I'm in the same dilemma, got two of them (one of moms favorite plant) so very attached : ) and I just notched mine today, scared as hell. Thankfully yours and other clips I've seen make me feel I did the right thing 🤔 .

Hello, Sarah. I am your fan in Taiwan. I have missed the movie you made in the past ten years. Because it is too violent, Taiwan will not be shown in the cinema. Tell me about your movie in 2010 through a friend. Your acting skills shocked me, and I think your performance is wonderful. I only speak a little English. So I use a translator. I really like your smile. I will follow you. Looking forward to more of your film creations in Taiwan.

Hope they are starting to come back. Perhaps some anthuriums, bromeliads or kalanchoes might symbiotically assist with the regeneration.
