I tried the water method, followed all the tips, changed my water regularly, and my plants were dieing. I figured what the heck and stuck them in some sandy soil that I had in an old pot and within 3 weeks, they came back to life and started growing like crazy.

Just received an umbrella bonsai with a couple stems snapped from transit, followed your advice so hopefully mid Feb I should have a couple more to add to my indoor rainforest project.

That's great that you have posted this video, it shows passion and a great hobby.
However, the petiole cutting won't grow into a full plant, it needs at least 1 node, which is located on the main stem.
It would be great to fix your video and update the people.

I had no idea that the petioles could even root! I’ve always taken cuttings from a stem above a node.
Just curious, what do you mean by the petioles won’t grow into a full plant?
Hi! , it's that the plant will stay in a mini-dwarf form. No stems will form, just leaves. If you want a full larger plant, use stem cuttings. Hope this helps.😀🪴

I did exactly what you said. They rooted wonderfully and I planted them and nothing ever happened. All I got was a rooted leaf, what did I do wrong?

Hi there, Sometimes they do that. For best success, I have found that taking a cutting segment of stem plus the leaf petiole has best outcome. Hope this helps! 😀🪴

I’m confused sooo many people are saying it won’t grow by leaf cutting, I saw this plant 😍😍 grabbed leaf close to stem, now should I go back a clip some stem too? (Inconvenient)It’s no fun in just buying. I want to propagate on my own.
Hi! Sorry about the confusion. There are two ways to propagate. Leaf method (plant will stay tiny and adorable) and Stem cutting (Plant will grow into full size shrub over time). I have videos of stem cutting as well. Here is that video link- ruclips.net/video/FbY3GSYtxyI/видео.html

Hi! If the leaf fell naturally the plant was most likely discarding an old leaf, so unfortunately the leaf petiole will probably not root. But you can try, you never know. This plant is so tough it might root.😀🪴

I successfully rooted two leaf stems in water. It took a few months but there were plenty of roots. They have now been potted well over a year and there is no change to them. Alive, but that's it. Any suggestions?

ndoors nearby the thriving parent plant. They are planted in potting soil with some peat moss and perlite - again, like the thriving parent plant. Bright, indirect south window, plant light on dreary days.
Ok, hmmm. The only other thing else I can think of is that she may need some fertilizer to get her groove on. Maybe introduce some Jacks 20-20-20 into your watering. Or you could maybe try fox farm liquid fertilzer 6-4-4 ( higher nitrogen to help leaf growth), Hope this helps. 😀🪴

I was so confused with some plants I grew from propagations as well. What you need to keep in mind is that the plant might have plenty of roots, but depending on how big the pot it is in is, the plant might be putting all of its energy into expanding the root system. It took my plants a few months to grow their roots first too, until I saw any sign of activity. Now they are all shooting out new leafs. Just stay patient!

How much time it takes to root in water? How often it's water should be changed?
Hi, it usually takes a few weeks, up to one month. Some cutting root faster than others we hove found. We have also rooted using water and leca and that process seems to root a bit faster with more roots. Hope this helps. 😀🪴
Why should you leave your water out ?
Hi! Our tap water is chlorinated. Plants don’t like chlorine, so setting your water out to sit for a day or two allows the chlorine to evaporate out. 😀🪴
I have a six foot tall plant in the backyard that needs to come out. I can take lots and lots of leaf cuttings, but what about the newer branches, can they be rooted somehow?
Hey there! You can root the umbrella from the branches too, but you want to cut a piece of stem that is woody, not new growth ( usually about 8- 12" down the branch is a good spot to cut) and you can root those stems in soil with root hormone or you can root the cutting in water as well. So I have a 4 foot tall schefflera with one main stalk and lots of stems (petioles) but she suffered from heat damage when my AC went out for about a month during a Texas summer (long story) but I placed her outside in a spot I thought would be shady, but she had several hours of direct sun for a few days before I realized and she lost several leaves…..then I put a fan on her inside (still no AC - parts were on back order) and watered to keep her cool and she still got wilty. She’s now in AC and has lost 90% of her original leaves, but already producing 3 new sprouts, she is bald but looks strong. My question is, can I cut those leaveless petioles and try to root them in water? Or just cut them and hope they grow back?
Hi! Im am sorry your plant had heat damage. If I understand your question correctly- On petioles, I wouldn't touch any new growth (sprouts). But on older petioles further down the stem, yes you can try to root them; but those may not take since the Scheff has been through shock. Hope this helps.😀🪴
Try air layering Schefflera that have lost all but top leaf growth. The idea is to put an upwards 'nick/cut' just underneath a stem node. Place plastic wrap filled with Sphagnum moss around this cut above and below it. Wedge some of the moss in the open nick to keep the wound open. Tie in above and below to retain moisture in the moss. Roots will form inside the bag full of moss from the wounded cut. Make sure to keep the moss wet as appropriate. When it's sufficiently rooted, cut off from the bare stemmed plant beneath. Remove bag and moss, then plant your shortened Schefflera in fresh compost. Keep it out of full sun until you see fresh growth.The original may or may not send out new shoots.
Might could cut a few notches above the lower nodes and see if you get some new sprouts. Will also make a more bushy plant
I think it will only grow roots and no new leaves as there is no node point.
Hi! Propagating by Stem cuttings is a very good way to go since they also tend to grow faster with more bio mass to kick start growth. 😀🪴

Apparently dipping the cutting into honey will do the same thing as rooting hormone.
I think it's better to have some part of the stem with the leaf cutting so a new shoot can grow out from. What it's just the leaf the leaf roots but has now where to grow a new shoot of branch from...

does it have to be tap water? what if they bleach the water?
Hi. Our tap water in Miami has some chlorine (bleach-like) to make it drinkable. But plants don't like high amounts of chlorine or bleach, so we like to let our tap water sit out for up to 2 days to allow the chloride to off -gas and then you are left with water that is chlorine free and it's great for watering your plants and cuttings. Or you can use distilled water if you prefer, but we found the schefflera is adaptable to most water conditions. Hope this helps.😀🪴
