Where should we definitely explore next year? What lines, stations, and tunnels should be at the top of the list! Any suggestions will make it onto our website. Thanks for watching.

Whitewick's Abandoned Railways Cwmbran is waiting. We may only have one line and station now but we used to have two lines and several stations. And the Marches line has opportunities for closed stations on an open line-Caerleon and Ponthir spring to mind. And up towards Pontypool and Blaenavon lots of opportunties -including a short preserved railway.

Come to Haydock between Liverpool and Manchester. Haydock was a small mining community which what was officially a village. It had three stations. Haydock Park racecourse, Ashton station (which was in Haydock), and Haydock station itself. It featured in The Guinness book of records as having the steepest gradient in The UK. Also close by is the Sankey Viaduct built by Stephenson for the Liverpool to Manchester line, which is still in use today. Sadly all the stations have gone along with some in Wigan and Warrington. We also have the Huskinson memorial to the first man to perish on our railways. So lots to see, and lots of accommodation close by.
Thanks for all the wonderful videos.
Have a great Christmas and a wonderful New Year.

Great video again Paul and Rebecca. Merry Christmas and happy New Year to you.
I suggest, in Scotland, the Callander and Oban Railway, the Dunblane to Crianlarich section is disused, through Glen Ogle is stunning.
The Fort Augustus to Spean Bridge, the most unsuccessful Railway in Scotland, a tunnel and many stunning bridges. It also has a restored station.
I forgot to mention that the old station at Lochearnhead is owned by the Scouts.
Also, the Boness and Kinneil Railway, and the Keith and Dufftown Railway.
And, not forgetting the smallest station, Inches, on the Lanark to Muirkirk line.

I'm sure someone has already mentioned Derby Friargate station, which is a great example of a disused main line station. The platforms and subways are still discernible, track beds, signal box base and otherstation paraphernalia. The beautiful, but somewhat derelict, goods warehouse and pumping house are still extant and worth an explore. I have photos taken in 2012 if you want a flavour of what's to see. Also, on the same line further north is Breads all station which has the obvious remains of a cattle dock. There are many more in the Derby area and I'm quite happy to give more pointers if you like.

I'd love to see you visit the Callander and Oban line. I went to Stirling University in the early 70s and visited the abandoned part of the line. The view from Glenogle viaduct is just amazing. Glenoglehead station was a scout centre and Luib station was in same condition as on the day it closed, with documents still on desks. I would hate to think that it has now been vandalised.
As someone born in Dunfermline, I'd love to see you do a video about the area. Although there aren't many closed stations, there are an enormous number of closed lines, many of which I visited or travelled on back in the 60s and 70s. One of my uncles, who was a train driver, even let me drive a class 37 on a goods train between Alloa and Dunfermline Upper back in the late 60s when I should have been revising for a French exam the next day. I scraped through the exam.
PS: Nearly forgot. Merry Christmas and looking forward to your videos in the New Year.

You're actually in my top five....the other four are: Patrick Dickinson: All the Stations, 'Harrys Farm', and 'The Missenden Flyer' (motorcycle vids)....but railways are my true passion. I drive HST's, love my job, and there is nothing else I would rather do. Incidentally, if you want a fantastic place to stay, I can highly recommend 'Newtonmore Signal Box'. It is right on the platform of the station. and ideal as a base to explore that area.....regards, Julian.

@@pwhitewick I drive for EMR. I have been driving these trains for 18 years now and they never cease to bring a smile to my face. Like many of my older colleagues, I will be truly gutted once they are finally gone. Start slowly from a station, get it into notch three on the power handle, let the amps build up, wait until you hear the turbocharger winding up then 'give her the gun'.....makes the hairs on my neck stand up as she whines (and winds) up......Best train ever built in my opinion...

Here are a couple in East Anglia. First one is the Marriott's Way which runs from Norwich to Whitwell. Traces of the railway line are visible at the start, and there is a renovated railway platform at Hellesdon. Whitwell station has a cafe and some restored locomotives. The second suggestion is near Aldeburgh in Suffolk. There is an old railway platform visible from the Thorpeness to Aldringham road. If you walk past the platform and away from the golf course you'll come to a set of crossing gates and some cottages. Glad to have found your channel. You have a new subscriber.

I haven't scrolled through all 600+ comments so I apologise in advance if someone has already suggested Clare Castle Country Park (as it is now known). A little over half an hours drive from Rayne Station just across the Essex border into Suffolk. Well worth a visit. The Park was created around the ruins of Clare Castle (or Mott) and incorporates the now defunct Clare Railway Station on the Sudbury to Bury St Edmunds stretch which was axed thanks to Dr Beeching, as once part of the Great Eastern Railway's Colchester to Cambridge line.

you can walk / cycle the route of the old East Coast Mainline north of Selby through to the southern outskirts of York. Some interesting bridges and old station buildings along the way. The ECML was re-routed to York south of Selby in the early 80's to allow for development of the Selby coalfield and the old track bed has been re-purposed as cycle route (including a scale model of the solar system with each "planet" being the exact scale distance apart over a 6+ miles route)

Thanks Paul and Rebecca. Although I have lived in New Zealand for many years I used to explore some of the abandoned lines of the UK also as I was raised in Manchester. My suggestion is to visit Walkden low-level and the stations along that line that ran from Patricroft to Bolton. They are still very much traceable and display many noteable features e.g. the Thirlemere aqueduct passes over the cutting in huge pipes (as kids we used to think of them as 'hot' and 'cold' - when you see them you'll know why!). The area is easily accessible from the motorway which passes nearby, not too far from Irlam and Cadishead where you visited with Martin Zero. As an interesting side-note you might mention the Duke of Bridgewater's coal mine that passes beneath the low-level station where the coal was cut directly in to barges floating in a multi-level underground canal that was said to be tens of miles in extent. The whole area has an interesting industrial history and is worth a couple of days explore as there are many other abandoned railways too which served the comprehensive coal industry which undercut the entire region.

There is a small but active heritage museum in the Goods Shed and the Station is a Tea Room.
Heading away from Compton in the other direction there is a small section of Elevated Steel Viaduct that was the industrial line into Cortaulds works now a housing estate.
The Turntable well still exists at the old Stafford rd Works. You would have to ask more knowledgable Wolves people on how to find it. Mervyn Strozynsky in Wolverhampton in old photos being the best bet.

Can I suggest the Heritage Line between Darlington and Bishop Auckland, which includes North Road station - now a museum and still in use as a public station. It claims to be the first ever public rail station of 1842 for the Stockton & Darlington railway of 1825; the museum holds the original 1st steam engine to pull a passenger train - Locomotion No1 which built by Stephenson before The Rocket. Close to it is the Skerne bridge, a preservation society which recently built the Tornado(?) engine and Shildon, home of Timothy Hackworth and museum plus the second national rail museum. Beyond B Auckland the line goes to Stanhope which, to my belief only has train services during the summer season. Also at Shildon is the aquaduct going over the line and a tunnel just after the station towards the lines general termination point of B Auckland.

@@pwhitewick if you are ever in the Bedford or Cambridge areas there are some abandoned stations which have been left to decay on the old Bedford to Cambridge line. Platforms are well in evidence at Bedford and willington. Not too sure about the rest of the line, but would make a good day out if you are in the area.

Super video, guys. I find abandoned railway stations quite eerie. There is an old line running adjacent to our house, which once linked Southport to Preston via Hoole, Hesketh Bank and Penwortham Cop Lane. Not much remains, but it may be interesting to find out exactly what DOES remain.

The remains of West Grinstead have had a bit of tlc from the council; it was a lovely little station, which we used to see from the car as we crossed the road bridge at the southern end. It took two or three years after closure before demolition started, the road bridge had a "zero gravity" hump, so when the car went over, we'd fly up out of our seats and get a good glimpse of the footbridge and station buildings in a fairly recent coat of green paint.

I used to love exploring the abandoned railway lines around the village of Ryhill a few miles to the South of Wakefield. This area was, of course, a major area for mining and is crisscrossed by old railway lines that used to serve both passenger and the mines. Although heavily overgrown now you can still find the remains of the old platform of Ryhill station, walk along the embankments and see the remains of old bridges. To the South of the station the you can walk along the line and you come across an intact old brick bridge that crosses the line. All around these villages of Ryhill, Crofton, Royston and many others in this area you can find the remnants of the old lines. Fascinating to explore on a Summers day and would be well worth a visit.

  • @TheCatBilbo

Something so forlorn and haunting about old stations: somewhere that was once so busy, all those people passing through. It's when you stand on the former trackbed and see the platform stretching away, then the obvious gap in the distance where the rails ran onwards. Or, stand on the platform and try to imagine all of the people who travelled from that point throughout history.
All that effort and engineering skill now just waits for a train that will never stop there again.

@@pwhitewick Please, be my guest! Your video reminded of the old station at Sturmer, North Essex, close to the Suffolk border. The former line was a very long footpath between Haverhill and Sturmer, then a magnificently solid iron bridge over the river (we spent many hours playing on the mudbanks under it).
The station was a private house but you could see it clearly over the small road. You could stand on the trackbed and look right down between the platforms as they stretched away from you. It was all grass between them, which made it look surreal to me as a child; I didn't know what this place was for many years. I was always fascinated by it - it just had this strange aura and it's because it used to be something, but obviously no longer was. I really wanted to walk on those platforms, regardless.

Some great abandoned stations there - Verney Junction, Claydon, Swanbourne and others. It's still National Rail property so you won't be able to walk it, but you can still see most of the stations from nearby roads. And when the new Oxford to Cambridge line is built it'll all be swept away, so you need to get in there quickly!

6 Bangor to Afon Wen via Caernarfon ( partially taken up by the narrow gauge
    Welsh Highland Railway)

You've already visited its remotest station - Loch Skerrow - but the former Dumfries - Stranraer - Portpatrick line, closed in 1965, is worth a real explore. It wound its way across Galloway with a series of superb viaducts, and stations in remote locations. Gatehouse of Fleet - 6 miles from the town it served; New Galloway, Parton, Crossmichael, Creetown, Kirkgunzeon, Killywhan, Lochanhead and Maxwelltown are worth visiting. The 2 branches - from Castle Douglas to Kirkcudbright and from Newton Stewart to Whithorn - are worth exploring as well. In the same part of Scotland, but further North, the abandoned Elvanfoot - Wanlockhead line is worth visiting, as it ran through some of the bleakest countryside in the country.
