Purina ONE Cat Food Review (We Tried It)

- Опубликовано: 12 июл 2024
- Purina ONE was introduced in 1986 and was Purina’s first venture into the world of super-premium pet food. It’s marketed as a natural brand and features what Purina calls high-quality ingredients, claiming that these better ingredients can lead to better health. With so many other Purina brands to choose from, how is Purina ONE different and how does it compare to its siblings in the Purina family?
That’s what we’re discussing in today’s video. Stay tuned to get all the details.
Note: I made a mistake in the original edit of this video, calling caramel color an artificial color and saying that the FDA classifies it as potentially carcinogenic. This was a misinformed statement, and I am deleting it from the video. It may take several hours for this change to appear. In the meantime, you can refer to this FDA article on caramel color and 4-MEI: www.fda.gov/food/food-additiv...

Thank you so much for these videos! I'm planning to foster kitties in a few years and I need to do thorough research until I have enough money! Love from 🇵🇷💟
The Purina One review was very helpful. You confirmed what I was thinking as well. Thanks Mallory. 🐾
Ooooooo I'm early! I'm hopefully adopting 2 kitties this summer so this channel has been SUCH an amazing and evidence-based resource!
That’s greath, I recommend to search for a informative catwebsite where you can read wich ingredients to avoid and which foods keep kitties healthy.
Love these reviews! Thank you!
Thank you for your channel! I love your reviews--straight to the point, all facts, no drama or weird fluff. I'd love to see you review Pro Plan. I'm still trying to find an affordable food that my very picky kibble addict will eat, and this one has been recommended twice, but I have my reservations.
Underrated RUclipsr 💪
I've said it before and I'll say it again: Your reviews are very in depth/detailed & you're a very good speaker and writer. Keep up the good work. Interesting that you used duck duck go for searching. Good stuff! :)
I really love that you did these cat food reviews with the rating system! It really helps
Yay! Thank you for listening to my suggestion lol. (I’m sure I wasn’t the only one). Xx
Lol. Just got a 15 pound bag of the true instinct kind. One of my cats is not interested in it. I’m feeling so torn because I want to feed my cats wet food. But hadn’t seen your reviews of the dry foods yet. I feel like there’s so much to learn from this RUclips channel. Thanks for all your content.
You're GLOWING!
I've NEVER seen a tiger or a lion chase a corn cob across the prairie , never seen a cat sit beside a stream waiting for a soybean to swim past..
This channel is good! Thanks for videos like this 😁
this is helpful! Because I been mixing up my cats food with different brands and notice both of my cats leaned towards purina wet cat food more compared to others like fancy feast etc.
I am on a quest to find a higher quality wet food for my senior kitizen who is 13-14 years old. The latest brand I've tried is I and Love and You pate by PetsGlobal which is also the maker of the Tiki Cat brand. My cat initially devoured all three offerings in the I and Love and You variety pack (chicken, turkey and cod), but now only loves the cod and turns her nose up at the chicken and turkey. Fortunately I can purchase the cod in the individual cans. I may try the Purina One line and see how she likes it. Thanks Mallory for another stellar cat food review!
This was great. Please do more comparison of foods and what do you feed your cat
Amazing video! Thank you
I used to have 5 beautiful rescued cats, whom I fed with "Purina sensitive skin and stomach" dry food.
They were all 5 fine on this food for several years.
Then Purina changed the ingredients, but failed to change the *ingredient list on the package* of this food for at least 3 months after the ingredient change. Now I have 3 beautiful rescued cats still living.
You do the math.
I will never use Purina again.
i use to buy my cat what i thought was good quality cat food and it was twice as much as Purina One brand. i've switched to PO and my cat eats it like he's addicted to it. I can no longer afford the higher priced cat food and I'm hoping PO will not cause issues like some of these mega producers products can; like urinary tract infections. Thank you for a great video with very helpful info.
I divide cat food weekly between wet food and raw diet. Her wet food brands are Wellness the turkey and salmon. Other wet food brand she likes is from Tiny Tiger, beef and poultry variety pack.
First of all, I find the recommended dry cat food from this channel completely unaffordable. But my cats love Purina One Tender Selects. Chicken is their favorite. They just won't eat anything else. I will try the can version of Purina One but I'll have to mix it in with the kibble because they won't eat wet food on its own.
I agree that they are a bit in the pricier side but I just made the switch to a higher end food brand and my kitties are now eating less (yay since they were always hungry and meowing ) . Their poops aren’t stinky anymore either. I have seen the difference within 2 days. I’m glad I spent a bit more . Saving in the long run
@@BA-dg2yb oh mine their poops are definitely stinky but I have mine on natural balance Altra and they're doing so wonderful not to be disgusting with detail but their poops look nice fat and moist and they are only pooping once every other day or once a day so the litter box is actually looked fantastic
If you can't afford Purina why did you get a cat. It's the cheapest worst brand you can find.
If still not successful, try one with lots of gravy and chunks of meat. That worked for my particular cat.
Purina isn't expensive, a small $10 bag will easily last you over a month...
I love your deep reviews! Are you able to give a review on Whole Hearted?
Would love that too!!
ived tried many name brands and this is the only one i see my girl made a very big difference on i get her the one with salmon she was having issues with biting and itching around her butt area and she was balding from there till i got her this brand and all her hair grew back her coat is shiny her eyes beautiful as always and she loves it all in all i give it a 10/10 and yes bit pricey but it’s worth it plus i’ll just buy the biggest bag they have and won’t have to worry about for awhile so worth it as for wet food only sheba her favorite and comes in different flavors and sheba has been good to her since day one so have no bad things to say bout sheba
I have watched all your videos showcasing foods, man it is eye opening how many foods have such weird unnecessary ingredients. I decided on Feline Natural wet food for my Sami.
I’m so envious that your cats like chicken!! Mine has to have some fish flavor for her to even want to touch the food… :’(
My indoor cat eats Purina One Chicken sometimes. She is mostly on Pro Plan, with a little Tiki Cat thrown in, but the Purina One mixes in well. She has heath problems and she is chronically under weight. I will feed her anything she will eat.
you should try fussie cat!! super good ingredients and it's made for picky cats. i usually order a 10lb bag on amazon for $30 . lasts us a while because my cat mostly eats wet food!
I'm broke so my cat ain't getting the best food I want to give him the pro plan but I ain't got the money rn
I'd love to see your review of Wellness cat food! That's what we feed our kittens :)
We just adopted a kitten and feed her wellness. My other cats eat nom nom, wereva
We plan to!
my cats liked wellness wet at first, they won't touch the wellness grain free dry. someone needs to sell sample bags to see if they like it first, sick of wasting money on bags.
I've tried many different brands of wet and dry cat food but my cat only likes the Meow Mix dry food and an occasional mouse.
So I'm sticking with the Meow Mix dry cat food but I do leave the car many water sources.
Good informative video.
My cats like meow mix also
thanks for the review . i tried to give my cat better dry food options but he refuses to eat it i got him to eat tiki cat born carnivore but i miscalculated and ran out after several weeks so i had to give him the basic meow mix for a few days until it got delivered once i got it he never wanted the tiki cat again and then i got gifted two bags of purina one and he actually liked it i was hoping this food was a step up from meow mix but basically your review makes it seem one is barely better.
Wonderful video! You should do a review on wellness and weruva!
Coming soon!
I've been feeding my pride & joy Purina One Indoor Advantage kibble for the last 10yrs since he was old enough to eat solids while giving him a soft diet of Fancy Feast once a night. He's just as active & playful as he was when he was years younger. Hope I'm doing okay?
Hi there! That sounds okay to me-and if your kitty is exuberant and active, it sounds like it's serving him well.
I also feed my cat indoor advantage
My kitty has been on the dry version for all 20 1/2years of his life. It can't be that bad. That said, I am looking at transitioning him to the canned versions for increased protein and moisture.
@@thomasdickey9852 Oh wow, not a lot of wet food in that period?
I'd love to know your opinion on purina liveclear. It's supposed to help with allergens but it's crazy expensive.
Nice vid! After much research, I settled on their Purina Pro Plan. This one doesn’t contain any by-product meals, plus the weight management one that I use doesn’t contain any corn, wheat or soy (turkey & egg formula only).
My cat is super picky... He loves the urinary tract wet food. It's pricy for me but worth it as he actually eats now.
The Purina One Healthy Kitten Chicken and Salmon Recipe Pate (gotta love these labels) ingredients are chicken, liver, chicken broth, pork lungs, salmon, natural flavors, followed by a list of mostly vitamins and minerals. I say mostly because they snuck in guar gum into the list. Not too bad though, having basically all meat for the solid ingredients.
I noticed something missing though, and that’s DEA, which is important for the developing brain and nervous system. The cheaper Fancy Feast Kitten Pate has it, so I don’t know why it’s left out of this.
My kitten eats it but not as enthusiastically as the Fancy Feast. Sometimes I wish she could just tell me what to give her.
Not an expert here, but maybe a little bit of both? Don't give her a full can of fancy feast and only a little bit, that way it's cheaper on the cans and she's getting both?
What is dea?
@@snowchips9596
I meant DHA.
My kittens came to me with Purina One Dry Kittenfood, i immediately bought the wet version to offer them both. They really enjoyed it. But then I learned more about Cat Food and got them off it. I also don‘t like that it’s under Nestlé… But yeah. To each their own. But I‘m glad to learn it got a 7/10 by you and wasn‘t that bad.
What do you feed now ?
Wessy is so cute!😻
Agreed! :)
Thanks for this one. I'd be very interested in a urinary tract formula review of all the brands you can find. I think it's a pretty common need, and especially looking at dry formula.
That's a good idea. We did write an article on the subject of best food for urinary tract disease, but a video comparing all of these formulations would be interesting as well. It's not a direct comparison of all of the urinary formulas available, but here's the article if you're curious: allaboutcats.com/best-cat-food-urinary-tract-health
@@AllAboutCatsYT Thanks for the link. 🙂
Thanks!
Thank you for the review! I’m a little confused about the comparison to the Beyond plan. Do you feel this one is not quite as good as Beyond? Thank you! 🐈 🐱
Hi Bea, I'd say that they're very similar nutritionally, though people who prioritize theoretically higher-quality, clearly-named ingredients will want to opt for Beyond.
You are great reviuwer ♥️and We have defrent purina one that you do 😺and before your video playd ther was a comercial for sheba cat food😹😹stay safe 💖 😻😻😻😻
Thanks for the video but how do you make the easy put handle on top of the uk purine 1 pack. I can cut the opening for keep fresh zipper but not the handle???
Hi, Mallory...
Our boys get Merrick's pate, and are still on the Iams kitten kibble until they are about a year old.
Does this sound sensible?
Appreciate your channel very much.
Master Wessie couldn't wait to dig in, he likes!
Hi Dave, that combination of wet and dry food sounds fairly solid to me. For the price, Merrick isn't the *best* brand you can buy, but if your cats like it, it could work. You can learn more about the brand in our written review here: allaboutcats.com/merrick-cat-food-review
Could you make a Purina Felix review? I've been wondering about how good it is for a cat cause i'm planning on getting one and i can get the Purina Felix Line the easiest
Hi Mallory thanks for the review. I’m feeding my cat the Purina Beyond wild prey-inspired wet food which you reviewed and my cat loves it because it’s meat and organ rich formula.
How much is that per can?
@@nunchaku4607 I buy the 12 can pack for $19 at chewy or Amazon
Hi Mallory How is Westie, Forest and You ? Would You please do a review on Purina Prime Plus?
Do you go back and see how you’ve rated other foods when you do the ratings here? It seems like this food got a higher grade than I’d expect considering some of the past reviews, IIRC.
Hey there. That's a good observation; at this time, the rating system is pretty subjective and prone to variation, so it is possible that I have been inconsistent. I do want to establish a more concrete rating system, however-just need to take the time to set that up. You can learn about the rating system currently in place here: allaboutcats.com/cat-food-reviews
Could you do an in depth review like this for the ‘Made by Nacho’ foods?

Hey! I live in Portugal and I love your videos! I´m now giving my cats HAPPY CAT "Minkas" Urinary Cat kibble, but I´m not very sure if it is a very good kibble for them.
I would appreciate so much if you could do a video talking about this ;)
Hi! Thank you so much for joining and watching. We'll consider covering this food in the future. Thank you!
@@AllAboutCatsYT Thank you so much! ;)
Hi Mallory, Would you do a review on Iams cat food . Please
Been feeding this dry food to a feral cat , his fur is way better than our house cats for sure !
Thank u ♡
Please do a review on Blackwood. Also, any recommendations for home cooked wet food? I give my cat boiled chicken fillet and deboned fish , occasionally chicken liver, beef lung and also a little bit of pumpkin and cooked egg yolk.
Your home made mix is not nutritionally balanced. You can Google what needs to be added.
@@bradleymorrison8843 he only gets the home made mix twice or thrice a week .At other times I give him kibble 2 meals and canned wet food 1 meal. On days he gets the home made , he gets kibble for the other meals. He enjoys the home made best and sleeps really well when he eats that. Is more alert and active when awake. In the past 2 months I stopped the home made as I wasnt free to cook, gave him more canned wet food and he put on weight. The Vet says I need to watch his weight now. The Vet recommended I go back to giving him the home made as I used to. The lean chicken I give him isnt as fattening as canned food and contains more protein too as it is purely meat in broth. He loves the broth and laps it all up.
I will ALWAYS go for urinary health varieties of store cat food. Most store varieties cause serious issues with a cats urinary tract later in life, so it’s best to snag that variety if need be. That being said, I was always using Iams urinary health food, cats were great! Great poops, no issues yadda yadda. Well our store seemingly stopped carrying it, so we tried Purina One urinary tract health food. We have 4 cats and they all puke from it. A watery slimy puke. All of them. I was searching online and can’t seem to find anything! So odd. Since they’ve been back on iams (had to order online lol), they’ve been back to great again!
Did you guys get a new mic? Sounds really low on my end, had to turn up the volume all the way up but maybe it's just me
Hey, that's a good question. I didn't get a new mic, but something may have gone awry. Will look into it.
What do you think of the Purina Pro Plan line?
I have six fluffy monsters and my big boy (7 yr old russian blue) did have the PU operation in 2019 due to crystals and urinary blockages that nearly killed him, currently feed them friskies wet food and purina sensitive stomach and also the urinary health dry food.
I am not happy with any of it.
Dry food makes me nervous but once again I have 6 cats to feed,
I also have a 20 yr robust female who prefers dry food over wet.
I would dearly love to put them on raw food diet or freeze dried cat food program or at the very least a high protein low carb cat food.
I well understand my cats are carnivore's and would never deny them meat, however I want no part of the rabbit meat trade so any non rabbit suggestions would be great.
My issue is some of the prices I see out there are really really pricey for a person with 6 cats.
I am looking for a good option that I can buy in bulk and does not require a chef to prepare.
A healthy option with a price point that is cost effective and reasonable but no so cheap it compromise's nutrition.
I was hoping you'd talk about the grain free kibble...that's what I feed mine
Same here!
I bought my cats canidae the freeze dried one. Two of them wouldn't touch it and I witnessed one cat spit it out. Three of my cats are seniors. They are now eating Iams. (That is what I could get in a pinch from a DG near me) I don't think it is the best food but they are doing good.
I also don't get the argument anymore of "corn being bad" considering they just replace it with potatoes, and mad fruiits. Corn is less then rice, and potatoes on the glycemic charts I have read. Also less then some fruits they throw in cat food. So, is corn actually THAT bad? I feel like it was a marketing tool to modernize the pet food industry
As far as I can tell, you're spot-on regarding corn. Corn, other grains, and other sources of carbohydrates are not necessarily bad for cats-they're just not necessary, and there's some evidence that consuming a high-carb diet may have negative health effects. Thanks for the thoughtful comment.
The problem with corn, potatos, rice and other grains and starches is that its just fillers, it doesnt give any nutritional value to cats. Not only that, but grains and starches make the glycemic index skyrocket in cats, in some cases can cause diabetes. High carb intake can also damage their pancreas. Of course, genetics can also be a factor for certain diseases but if a cat is healthy, in my opinion, its best to avoid cat food that has those as ingredient.
@@PrimrosesAtelier Oh I totally agree! I just feel like some pet food brands swapped corn for “potatoes and fruits” making people think its healthier
When cats need meat not all the extra garbage
Myy cat is so fussy, won't eat just anything, I adopted her 3 weeks ago, she was abandoned by her previous family at a clinic, she had UTI.
I am carefully trying to add good quality wet food to her c/d but she's refusing most of it, she eats Core mostly, but I noticed that she's itching her skin sometimes, the clinic said she's over affectionate cat, well she is very beautiful soul and loving, but I doubt that's the issue.
I am so lost and my heart is breaking for her, not sure what her previous family fed her. It seems like she has food allergies to me, although the clinic fed her purine essential one for seniors she's 2.5 yrs old, but because it was the only wet food that she accepted most the time.
Please help.
Thank you for being so wonderful in your research
Do your Kitties only like Pates ? Would you please do a review on Proplan for cats.?
No, they like fresh and raw food, too! We did publish a review of Purina Pro Plan on the website here: allaboutcats.com/purina-pro-plan-cat-food-review

Can you make a review on Purina Pro Plan?
Hey Mallory, I live in a small town and I feed feral cats. I feed them Purina complete along with Friskies wet food. Is this the best way to go or should I feed them something else? I have 7 cats and can not afford to feed strays what I feed my cats as far as the wet food as they get Fancy Feast. Any recommendations?
Good for you, helping our little gifts from God...
Not Mallory, but I would say ANY wet food is going to be better than any dry. I know that you can get big cans of friskies wet food and that tractor supply’s cheap brand also has very economical large cans of wet food. Both pretty much all byproducts, but at least still moisture rich and better than lotsa carbs.
@@davestelling Yea, I enjoy it and many become very friendly and I can pet them. I try to take as many as I can to the vet to be fixed, wormed ,etc. I have to watch my budget . My neighbor is going to go to a city council meeting and try to have a fund drive set up for donations so we can fix more if them. We have many in our little town.

I understand the folks that work around Rochester, NY are overwhelmed right now trying to help the feral population. So sad...
Hi there! I apologize for the late reply, but I'm happy to see that you've gotten some good input from others. What you're feeding your ferals right now sounds great to me. If it's available to you, you may want to consider Kirkland's Daily Maintenance dry food as an alternative to the Purina Complete. It's an economical choice that seems to include somewhat superior ingredients.
What about Iams Kitten wet food? Getting a new kitten and wondering if this would be ok for her along with Purina One Kibble…???
you're such a nice lady!!

I feed 25 cats, all rescues.I started with Purina Cat Chow dry food but have moved to Purina One dry food .I need the most affordable, best dry cat food available.I have heard Kirkland dry cat food was good but do not have a Costco membership and am wondering if the membership is worth the cost.Basically asking if Kirkland dry cat food is so far superior to Purina One to warrant the added cost. Thanks!
Wile I did recommend it in the best budget food video, I have to say now that Purina ONE is quite comparable to the Kirkland food, and I might even lean towards it in some cases due to the fact that the manufacturer of Kirkland food (Diamond) has been involved in multiple recalls in recent years, and while of course, Purina has also been involved in a few recalls, it seems to have a relatively clean history compared to Diamond.
Is carrageenan something I should worried about I feed my older cat the Purina one urinary tract wet cat food??? Should I switch to science diet utd for her found out that doesn't have carrageenan in it
I would ask your veterinarian especially if your kitty has urinary issues, I know my answer but it is best to ask your veterinarian for medical advice. Just my opinion.
Carrageenan causes joint inflammation
It helped . I feed my cat Purina One . This could be why he sometimes throws up . 🤔

@All about Cats: At beginning, you said Purina1 dry, was 16c-30c/day. Then you go on to state that the wet food would run $2/day. You then showed, (Amazon, I assume,) a price list of 24 cans @ $18 something. So a single can is . 79c. You feed your cat 2 1/2cans a day?
I think giving a daily cost is not an effective tool vs, say, a serving size. 🙋
Yes, depending on the size of your cat.. most tins of pate cat food run between 170-190 calories.. a 12 pound cat at 30 calories per pound equals 320 calories per day.. that's about a tin and a half per day..
Tried a box of this Purina ONE wet food (opted against the dry ones too starchy) ruclips.net/video/Sk_bGuYb5Ak/видео.html seemed semi decent but couldn't help but wonder why is wheat gluten in the top 5 ingredients. And it’s funny how they call this box of Purina One "True Instinct" when the real brand Instinct by Nature's Variety makes a much better, higher quality wet cat food. I found this box of Purina One very watery, obviously fake food coloring and the textures were just like fancy feast. Really what's the difference between the box of purina one wet food my cat gobbled up in a week and fancy feast shreds in gravy or some crap like that...seems like the same thing with a different name
I'm not a fan of the wheat gluten, either. Their True Instinct foods consistently contain this ingredient, which seems to be included to help give structure to the formed meat used in the "shreds". Wheat gluten also likely bumps up the protein content, which is arguably a cheap way to do that.
Right with such poor quality ingredients especially the dry line of purina one I thought you'd rate it C at best from seeing your other product ratings. When I had to pick at walmart between one indoor and iams indoor comparing ingredients/analysis iams was it but since then switched ..just comparing the best quality dry cat food at petco vs walmart is like night and day difference.
Maybe just me Purina seem to do good on test in US but terible in Europa where its barly good enoug . Tried find the best cat food many years peps who test dont dare to say who is best or who is carbagae :( its come to cats what they like and how they react to the food. I have given my cats royal canin who should be best but they dont look happy and one got dandruff. They did look way more happy when i gave them purina food even if its not the best . Cats are maybe like humans they enjoy bad food :)
Does anyone know how many ounces of wet food I should be feeding a 10 lbs cat while also feeding dry food.
I feed my 2 girls 1/4 of a can/night, then save the other half for next day. They like some water added, that makes into a soup. I have no idea how using canned food is $2./day. That equals 2 1/2cans a day! You are very right to ask what is her serving size. 🙋
Miss Shirley (Shirl) thank you so much . Do you also give dry food ?
This completely depends on how many calories in both foods, and your cat’s weight and weight goals.
I don't know what they put in this stuff but the stray cat I feed goes mad fpr Purina One dry food but not very interested in other dry food. Hoovers up the Purina One like a vacuum cleaner.
I give my cat purina one
review whiskas!
My cat only eats cheap food, friskies fancy feast etc and only the gravy ones no pate. I tried to give him a lot of the better brands even little by little mixed with his regular food but I end up with a lot of wasted expensive food 😿
Mine too! My cat only likes to eat fancy feasts and purina one dry food!!! I have spent so much money on better quality food and she will not touch it. Are we going to be okay?
