    Hi Dr. Rea. I've come across your YT page the last few days, I'm glad I did (and I subscribed of course!). Mainly due to Purina Pro Plan. I have a 1 and half year old domestic shorthair cat I adopted July 1st. When I got her her after a few days my vet and I realized that she had both a tapeworm and after testing Giardia. So her belly was all sorts of messed up. After multiple medications to clear both im happy to say she tested negative for all parasites twice over the next month so she's got a clean bill of health. But her poop remained loose, with mucus, greenish tint at times to it, and smelled pretty bad. My vet and I felt it was most likely due to both parasites just eating away at her insides so we needed to figure a way to get her gut back to a healthier level. We landed on a vet diet and chose Hill's Prescription Diet gastrointestinal Biome. We chose this because it is formulated for cats who have loose stools, diarrhea, bad tummies for other reasons, etc. We wanted to get more fiber in her so it would start to firm up her poop. So she gets a mix of 2 3 oz cans a day of the wet and 2 servings of 1/4 cup of the dry (same gastrointestinal Biome) per day. For a good 6 weeks she gobbled both down at every meal. Shes a happy cat, full of play and energy, she started to put on weight now that the parasites weren't sucking the nutrients way from her. Overall she seems in great shape now. So now here is the prob - she for some reason unknown to me has basically stopped wanting to eat the wet food. Maybe she got a bad case of it and after a couple cans decided she didn't want it anymore. She'll eat a little bit of it, and I know she's hungry because she's begging for the food by the kitchen sink first thing in the morning, but when I empty the can in her bowl and put it down sheets a little only and leaves. Sometimes she'll even make a scarping motion on the floor next top her bowl, almost like she is moving litter. She still loves the dry food and the vet diet treats tho. No problem with that, it's only the wet she doesn't seem to want. So the last couple days Ive been Googling around to find a wet cat food that has seems higher in fiber, because I still want to make sure her poop is normal and also high in good protein because she is very playful and active andI think needs the protein. Hence I landed on Purina Pro Plan Vital Systems 4 in 1. It says it is high in protein and high in fiber which seems to fit Lucy's needs. Her poop has been excellent since giving her 10 days of a probiotic then starting her on the vet diet food - its darker, very little mush or mucus to it and its mostly like a tootsie roll. hasn't had any diarrhea and it doesn't smell bad anymore. So obviously I'd like to continue that for her. But what do you think of this Purina Vital Systems? Here is the Purina website for it - www.purina.com/cats/shop/pro-plan-vital-systems-turkey-entree-wet-cat-food#reviews. It's avail on Chewy and at Petco which is a plus because I can order it or get it physically in the store if I need to in a pinch if I run out. I'm admittedly not great in trying to figure out the numbers stuff with cat food like calorie content and crude analysis. So I thought I'd ask your opinion on if you think this food seems appropriate. It's very important to me that her food be healthy, not have any junk in it, have as little filler as possible (I won't buy any food with carrageenan for example). Sorry this is long winded LOL> Wanted to get my thoughts out so it made sense. Your thoughts are appreciated! :)

      I’d just get a cat fountain and not worry about the wet food. There is no rule she has to have canned food. Some cats have a texture issue and won’t eat canned food period. I have a cat fountain I’m currently testing out and hopefully share with you in the next few weeks.

      @@AnimalDocRea Thanks. I actually had a cat for 17 years before we had to euthanize her last March because she just developed too many elderly cat illnesses that the medications just stopped working for her and we knew it was time. She was never a fan of wet but LOVED dry. I gave her dry only for a long time before I started getting her to eat a little wet. The main illness that eventually got too bad to treat was her kidney disease. So I’m with you on the water fountain. But really would love her to at least eat some wet to make sure she stays hydrated. I’m a paranoid kitty dad at times lol.
      I actually bought the Dockstream App Monitoring Water Fountain from PETLIBRO. It’s great. She goes to it a handful of times thru the day for small little drinks. Filter is good for 2 weeks and you clean it every 7 days. I also got their Space Automatic dry food feeder. It’s vacuum packed inside the feeder. It’s been great. I can feed her from anywhere in the world and know she’s always got clean running water and fresh dry food.
      I appreciate you taking the time to look into this other Purina type. Looking forward to your thoughts. Thanks you 🙏 Cheers!

    Hello again Dr Rea. I was wondering if you could do a cat food review for two very popular grocery store brands: Purina One Adult Cat versus IAMS Adult Cat. Since Purina One hasn't done so bad in your dog food review, I was wondering how this food would be rated for cats. Thank you!

    Yes, Dr Rea, I don't know anything about BARD, but I will certainly keep hanging here with you because I've just found your videos about 2 days ago and I have been binge-watching them.I have learned so much in the last few days. I am so grateful to have found you and your valuable information. I used to spend hours and hours on end on the web looking for the best cat and dog food for my fury babies, and I almost went nuts with all those "fad" diets and their "wonderful" list of ingredients. Now, I know so much better, and thanks to you, I know that, from now on, I will stick to Science Diet and/or Purina Pro Plan, unless my pets ever need a prescription diet from my vet. Thank you so much for sharing your great knowledge and for taking the time from your busy schedule to do this for us and educate us. Cheers from Canada! 😻

      It’s one of the things I don’t like about Purina. They have done some great research and have spent millions but then will produce some diets that really aren’t very good. They are an example of a company that can produce great stuff and not so great. I think they’re just too big and a bit too profit oriented. Mars obviously is the same type company.

    What is a good food recommendation for cats that have a good allergy

    • @AnimalDocRea
      @AnimalDocRea  11 месяцев назад

      It would depend on how you determined they had the food allergy. Did you use a prescription food trial diet to diagnose?

    • @karenemeyer5961
      @karenemeyer5961 11 месяцев назад

      Yes, the older cat won't eat a prescription diet, when I found higher quality food his stool was better formed and with the absence of blood. ( this all started after I introduced a kitten into our home, though feeding separately h stopped eating his dry food he loved, practically starving himself ( kitten ended up being sickly she drew my attention away from him, she was euthanized at 11 months for severe anemia with a guarded to poor prognosis after transfusions) Ember had gotten some of the kitten food. He was at the vets 3 times during the time I had the kitten and they did not tell me his weight, or that he was loosing weight, it was not on the paperwork ( new vet). The day I had surgery and the day she was euthanized, I came home to him and was awestruck with his collar hanging off of him.
      Took him back out to the Vet for a full blood work, examine and asked why they didn't tell me about his weight loss .
      Their answer, we never saw him when he was 14 pds, scales are different, his weight loss with us was just over a pound, he could stand to lose weight.... I thought I finally had his diet controlled.
      I gave adoption another try. This kitten also presented with a URI, then I noticed her stool liquid, she has Giardi. Then she still has liquid stool. I still had the prescription diet that Ember wouldn't eat, so I gave it to her. Royal Canine Ultimino. It's not to be fed longer than 8 weeks.
      I've introduced so many foods to eat, she refused them all.
      Now Ember is back to having soft stools with blood because he wants only to eat this cheaper brand Purina complete.
      Please, I have been to the Vets for a whole year.
      I've tried many things and had much heartache. I'm on social security disability $900. Please, help me with a few recommendations for a good food for both animals. Neither vet has helped me
      Please help me find

      Im so sorry for all you’ve been through. It sounds like you need to find a vet you feel more comfortable with or maybe even a specialist. This goes beyond a simple diet recommendation I’m afraid. It would be wrong of me to suggest a food you are using to treat a condition, that’s needs to be done by your personal veterinarian who is more aware of your pets physical condition, lab work, ect. Again I am so sorry. If you need help finding a vet I suggest starting at AAHA.org these are vet clinics that are certified to follow high standards.

      He's had an Ultrasound, blood work, everything is fine, even special stool analysis. At that time he was eating a better quality food. Actually, it was Taste of the Wild.
      I tried to listen to your video on that food.
      But I couldn't really keep up with what I need to read for Taurine, calcium, Protein, you said No Grains isn't good....
      Unless they have diabetes...
      That is Ember.
      Bug accepted the special diet, she won't eat anything else.
      All I'm asking from watching the videos, is a better information than if they do have an allergy probably with chicken.

      @karenemeyer5961 I’m sorry this really isn’t a question I’m in a position to answer, you need to ask the vet managing your pets case. My videos are not meant to advice nutrition as medical management for disease.
