    My vet said that she learned it back in uni but she didn't want to kid me and pretend she was good at it, it was too long ago and she doesn't deal with nutrition every day. I respected her more when she said it, I appreciate it when people dare to say "not my field of competence". It's better than chiming out simplified or general advise or outright wrong advise. She referred me to a vet who specializes in nutrition.

    I totally agree with the importance of giving your get a lot of different food types. In the shelter I worked we often had cats who only got one brand, one flavour and they refused to eat anything else because they were so stressed out and frightened.
    With my own cat I adopted I had similar problems. She was fed one dry food in one flavour since she was a kitten. Now she is five and I needed four months to convince her that wet food and different tastes are nice. She still wants her dry food and begs like she starves to death, but I keep it at as a jackpot treat because she won't eat any other treats, and I tried even human stuff XD.
    One quick sentiment over talking nutrion to you VET: Our deceased family cat was heavily diabetic and the VET recommended a really expensive DRY FOOD WITH ADDED SUGAR ... I'm getting so angry even now ... So honestly I don't trust VETs too much on nutrition.

    I have a new kitten and during a vaccination appointment I brought up transitioning the cat to a raw diet when he was a bit older. They were not at all in favour of this saying that commercial wet food contained all the nutrients they needed. It’s all a bit confusing to me, but I have not allowed him any dry food. Hey Jackson, thanks for the good info (once again)! One of our cats was switched to a wet food diet recently because of diabetes (in fact, switching food reversed her diabetic symptoms). Your comment about cats eating warm fresh food in the wild was a light bulb moment for me. I started serving the wet food with a couple of tablespoons of hot tap water poured on top, and it was surprising to see how eagerly the cat lapped it up. It really increases the aroma (or stink, if you hate the smell of wet food), and I'm sure the extra moisture is good for her, too.

    I'm mostly feeding my cat raw food and he totally loves it. There's way more of that "raw cat" in him now, and it's great to see him so active and happy. My vet said you should give your cat a bit of good quality dry food too, just so he stays accustomed to it. If he later in life gets a kidney disease for example, it might mean he has to have a low-protein special diet which in some cases is dry food, and it's good that your cat is used to it. Jackson's kibble rant seems a bit biased to me, and I don't know if it's only about American kibble or every kibble ever created no matter where you're from. In my country not every dry food looks like carbage. Is kibble that bad if there's no grain in it and very little carbs? Is it that bad if there are no artificial colors or flavors added? Is it that bad if the brand says they use low temperatures in the making process? Is it that bad if the ingredients are clearly stated in the package and you know exactly which parts of an animal are used? Is it that bad if you serve it to your cat mixed with water, like cereal, and your kitty obviously likes it? Jackson makes it sound like giving dry food to your cat is a crime, but I really think it's ok if it's only a small part of your cats diet and you make an effort to give only the best dry food available. What ya think?

    • @feonaarabellaparaiso1786
      @feonaarabellaparaiso1786 2 года назад

      When it comes to kibble if it is low / no grain in it, it usually has legumes which can cause kidney disease in your cats if fed over time. This is actually why my vet told me that when choosing between the two, the grain free kibble is usually worse for them because of that. Grain free wet or raw food is good for cats though. Granted, if you are willing to put in the time to look into the cat food ingredients on the bag and know the tricks they use to trick you into buying their kibble (for example, “made with beef” has less meat than “beef for cats” because of laws stating how much meat is required to use such phrases in the USA), I don’t think kibble would hurt your cats.
      It’s a hassle but hey, I don’t want to bring raw cat food with me when I go on vacation or road trips with my cats. I think it as a treat from their healthy raw diet. Hahaha.

    I know this video is 2 years old, however I would like to add my little anecdotal advice if your cat is struggling to transition to eat wet food: get a kitten!! My Rory was the pickiest of the picky eaters. He would only lick the juice off the wet food but he wouldn't actually eat any of it, no matter how many different kinds of foods I would get him to try. That was until I got a kitten, named her Tsuki. Kittens are wonderful at learning new habits, so I have been giving her nothing but wet food and I've been changing up the kind of foods I do give her, so I'll give her a raw egg along with her wet food and she absolutely loves it. So when Rory saw me giving her wet food, he almost overnight decided he wanted to eat what she was eating. Fast forward to now and I have Rory eating wet food with a raw egg and now I want to try raw salmon, to see if I can get him to eat that too. 😊

    I know you reccomend wet food over dry food but I need help. Someone with a similar experience please reply to this🙏🏻
    My cat has liver issues and test results showed that she might even have a chronical liver failure. It was that bad. We did the treatment, use the meds and I fed her with a prescribed kibble for liver issues. One month later we do the tests again and she is way much better. Wet said after about 1,5-2 months liver is gonna be all better. Vet only gave us a light (couldnt find a better word) syrup to give to her once a Day and told us to keep feeding her with that kibble for at least 4 more months. The vet warned us about not giving wet food or other kibbles because it contains a lot of fat and proteins which is not the best for especially cats with liver issues. But on the internet the solution to everything is wet food or raw food. I only want the best for my baby but I'm having trouble choosing a diet. Too much information, don't know which one to trust. And at the end of the day it's my baby's health at stake.

I will not let her go without eating, as she needs to gain weight. She has hyperthyroidism and can not afford to loose ANY weight! If a cat doesn't like the food they will not eat it, no matter how hungry they are. They will starve themselves. Without food for three days, the organs start to shut down. Their livers cannot support the body. I'm sick and tired of being guilted by feeding her dry food!

    I have a 3 mo. Kitten, had him since he was 4 wks., the vet recommended jams kibble. I've been giving mixed dry kibble with wet pate. Watching your videos has been an eye-opener! I'm going to slowly transition to wet...he likes it better anyway. Can't accord high priced stuff cause I'm a senior but still want the best I can for my new baby. Thanks for. My 4 yr old Boots has a GI sensitivity been tryin to help him get back his gut health buying grain free Blue Buffalo but he is not playing as much, I believe from feeding him half wet and half dry. The vets are not helpful at all to say the least, all they want is put him on a dry food diet. The other one (Oscar) 9yrs old is super heavy after I changed his dry food to a healthier one but still has gained a tremendous amount of weight. He is 19lbs I’m so worried about his health. He plays but only on his back for 5 mins 🥹 If Holistic vets were not so expensive I’d definitely go for one. Jackson thank you for your devotion in educating us about cats’ health.

    Our rescue cat Luna, has always had a delicate stomach and easily gets really smelly diarrhea if she eats canned wet food so we’ve taken her off the wet and it seems to help. However, I’m not convinced that although our vet has said just give her dry food for sensitive stomachs (Hills) is going to give her a long life.

    Is there an issue with transitioning kittens to a raw food diet? I know they have different nutritional needs than adult cats, but it seems like transitioning them when they're younger would be easier?

    • @Neinteen91
      @Neinteen91 3 года назад +6

      I think the only difference is the amount of feed: I know that adult cat only need food of 2-3% of their healthy body weight while weaned kittens need 15% per day with higher calcium and taurine content. I'm not an expert but there has be videos and web pages that explains them in more detail, but i don't see any difference in ingredients of what they can and can't eat.

    • @serabyne7536
      @serabyne7536 3 года назад +2

      the only difference is that kittens need to be fed whenever they are hungry, and also that they need a 75/15/10 instead of 80/10/10 (this stands for musclemeat/bone/organ) but yes, transitioning a kitten to raw food is much more easy than an older cat, mostly because kittens will eat almost everything they are given, they like to explore with their mouths and they are not yet addicted to kibble (as most cats will be after eating it for a long time).

      I know this comment is old but in case anyone is browsing and wondering - kittens do have different nutritional needs than adults.
      As others have said, kittens need more calories per day than an adult cat. But they also need a higher percent of those calories to come from fat - particularly fat that contains DHA. I’m no vet, but I think you could probably achieve this with a raw diet by adding fish oil to the mix right before you feed them.

    My cats just got home from a one month confinement at the vet because of a calicivirus outbreak on my city. It was very stressful and on top of that we learned my older cat had bladder stone because of his eating habits and love for dry food. Over the course of their stay at the vet we switched to wet food and today we're starting a home made wet food diet with the occasional canned and pouch food as a treat. So far they love the home made wet food (and it's cheaper than I thought it would be! Even more than dry food!) And I'm excited to try new flavors for them. Ive been cooking for myself and my family for a while, but as it turns out cooking for my cats is even more fun 😁

    My one cat has three wet feeds a day and likes a small helping of dried in addition before bed time, so I make sure I give her a large bowl of water which she likes. Unfortunately, I think that if I try to cut out the dried meal I think that she will probably try to eat me (she is a VERY bossy little tortie full of "tortitude") 😨. My other cat loves a bowl of semi-skmmed milk when the mood takes him which is apparently unusual for a cat because I have read they are generally lactose intolerant. When he was born he had "flat chested kitten syndrome" because his dam was not fed enough taurine when pregnant, so I don't think that added calcium intake will hurt him now.

    • @Neinteen91
      @Neinteen91 3 года назад +1

      I don't think your cat needs kibbles if she/he can feed on wet food, that way you won't have to worry too much about hydration. My cat is on raw food but she doesn't even touch her bowl of water at all, and I know she's hydrated enough because she pees a lot more than when she was on kibble and I can hear her lip smacking when she licks her mouth. Her coat is super shiny and plush, and also purrs really loud when she takes a nap on my lap.
      By the way feeding both kibble and wet food together in a long term is definitely unhealthy. Kibble has salmonella sometimes even fungus, and adding moisture will cultivate the bacteria in the cat's gut... Just look it up, there's articles about it on internet.
      About cat aggression, having my cat on feeding schedule of twice a meal a day also helped to make her play time a lot more predictable. She becomes a feisty kitty (attacks anything including humans that passes by her) for an hour or two before meal time, so I would have an intense play time with her using laser pointer and feather toy for about 20min, and when she gets tired I feed her and she would just sleep for most of the day. But I guess each cat is different so find the schedule that works most to your kitty.
      Hope this helps!

      i do around 8:30am, 5pm, and before bed, like 11pm. that way there aren't too many hours between meals. but it also depends on your cat and their needs. :) as for how much, just take the amount you're currently feeding and split it 3 ways. so if you're giving half a can in the morning and giving half a can at night, do a third for each meal.

    My cat is soo happy!! Uni loved the food!!!
    You have no idea, I didn't realize giving them dry food was bad. Growing up I always had dogs and we cooked for them all sorts of things, usually with meat in them, for some reason I thought that was bad for them and that I should've fed them dry food (because of the vitamins or something... idk).
    This is my first cat, we've had her for 4 years and I've noticed she's been sad lately, sleeping wayyy more than usual. So I went to you, I saw the three videos (dry, wet, raw food) and was amazed, went straight to buy my cuttie some wet food. Ohhh the look on her face, she was the happiest cat you ever saw! She didn't need no transition, she just wanted wet food (the old food was barely being touched for a while, I should've picked up on that).
    Mind you she's not the type of cat to cry for food, but she's been walking by me, rubbing up to see when I will give her again this glorious thing. Even the bitting is paused, I mean, I couldn't get the bitting to stop no matter how much I played, how clean the kitty pebbles were or anything. I hope this is just the thing needed and we can move to raw in a little while.

      I mean, you're assuming this based on what? A hunch? It's a combination of factors. Dry food has been around for a long time and there's many researches and studies that supports it. There's this notion that cats get obese, diabetes, etc SIMPLY because of dry food but that is incorrect. There are no studies that confirm this, it's just people making "facts" up to suit their opinions. The problem is mostly because people free feed their cats and they eat MORE than they should, which of course makes them overweight. The quality of the dry food also matters a LOT and most people just get a cheap brand from the supermarket. Still, there's plenty of cats all over the world that eat dry food and are healthy and live well into their 20s. Not saying raw food is not the best choice, but not all dry food is as bad as people think. Also, the idea of feeding raw food to cats is still a fairly new thing (you don't see many cat food companies delving into that yet), and MANY cat owners who do it themselves, do it WRONG. It's best to give your cats dry food (that has all the essential nutrients cats need), than to wrongly give them raw, which may be why vets are so against it too.

      In my experience, cats aren't like dogs that way. I've always had shelter cats. Who knows what breed they were. Look for cats that are affectionate and playful and if you get kittens, your interactions with them will be a huge determiner as to how they will be towards you behaviorially. Spend time playing with them every day. Hold and love on your cat. Keep in mind that patience is required for kittens, because it's a lot like having a toddler around the house. They will learn how and when to use their claws, but it's a learning process for them so there might be a few scratches as they learn! Give them scratch posts so they learn what's appropriate to scratch (not your furniture). If you get kittens, get two so they have someone of their own species to relate to. You'll love having cats. They're amazing! Good luck!

The second time I fed him I put even less kibble, and the next day I give him full on wet, and he meows everytime I am about to feed him.

    Thank you SO much for sharing what you've learned with everyone. You mentioned three feeding hours and showed a clock with 12,:00 4:00, and 8:00...pm??? What about the morning? And during the night? My 17 year old has lost some teeth and has lost a lot of weight. Keeping her fed has become stressful and expensive.

    Thanks for this! My Bombay boy is a kibble addict, but I never worried about it much because he drinks plenty of water. Nevertheless, I worry that he's not getting the good stuff he needs from a wet food diet. So we're both working on it!

    Jackson this is great and I realize that those tube treats totally help. My cat goes for the air dried food and the wet food if I squeeze the tube treats on top.

    I tried a brand named Rambala, which are raw meatballs for cats… I throw them on a pan, I wasn’t sure I should do that but now I know I’m on the right path… thanks! Only downside is that my older cat doesn’t like it, she’s really stubborn

    Jackson, I’ve been feeding my three cats dry food for the last 13 yrs. after watching your videos,I am learning about cats the do and don’ts, the can and can’t. Well I am giving wet food now, The shredded, And the little square chunks with a gravy wet sauce. Two cats love the wet sauce but not the food one cat doesn’t like any of it. So after I’ll leave a flat plate there for about 30 minutes I’ll pick it up . So what I should do first give them half the amount of dry food first,then I give them The wet food next correct.. then next will be raw food and would it be best to get it frozen and then I guess slice it and then warm it up a little bit just make sure it’s not cold.I change out different Meals to see which one they like the best that one is salmon I just knew they would love it, nope. So my next plan is to do what you said, I will give them the wet food, and then the dry food. Next I will get the dry food and grind it up to powder, then try sprinkling that on the wet food I see how that works. I just started this yesterday which was Saturday, May 7. Your videos are very important people who love their cats like we do cats our family like our dogs, we want to give them the best we can and we want to do the best we can to make them happy comfortable enjoy life. I love my cat and they love me in their own way but you are teaching me how to give love and how to except love from the cats. I’ve been ordering some of your food and toys from your website, and I will order that tube snack that you’ve been showing I’ll get that ordered as well.

    I knew you made music! I've noticed a few hints as I have obsessively watched all your videos (new cat daddy here). I've heard you mention overtones, delay on a snare, and now I see you jamming guitar. Rock on! (also thank you for all the cat knowledge 😸)

    I got my kitten yesterday and she’s only interested in dry food. She’s very playful and behaves normally, she’s even interested in playing in the cat litter however she hasn’t used this. I’m hoping that as the weeks go by she can eventually learn to use to litter and eat wet food

    Thanks for this advise. Its working, started of with about 10% 2 days ago and now up to about 30%. I am praying to get Rami used to a variety, Raw chicken is the only food she does not hesitate with but. She thoroughly will not touch anything gravy and is very partial to most things jelly, next battle! ..lol

    Thank for exactly video that I needed right now. My cat Simba has severe allergic skin reactions that vet has decided to put him on Sensitive cat food after she had originally thought was only flea bite allergy skin reaction. Simba is picky cat food eater. He will only eat his new food with chopped up cooked chicken meat mixed in his food along with me staying at his side or he will not eat.
