Good idea. Although at this time of the year he can anyway store the food of the fridge/freezer on the balcony, that´s probably his least problem.

@@michaelkaiser3261 Ok, I get your point. I'll remove my last sarcastic bit then. I imagine that freezing food, or leaving his eggs, veggies, butter and cheese at room temperature won't do much. I do freeze butter, meat, fish, breads that aren't going to be immediately consumed, but that's me.

If you're going to heat up the entire soup pot, you should heat it up till it boils because when it's just hot bacteria can grow. That's a really important thing to know when you have no functioning fridge.

That and don't freeze or refrigerate large quantities of soup, it will remain warm in the center and spoil, which causes food poisoning.
That's what the politicians/media does, with all their propaganda. Like "It's the Russians' fault," etc. And the same thing happens in the east, like "It's the fault of the Americans, of the West," and so on. They make people hate each other! We need to wake up! They did the same with the plan-demic, and they will do the same with any other scheduled crisis, such as the devaluation of money (that paper printed at the behest of some 'tricksters') or the food crisis (which while we are made to hate neighbors, food is destroyed around the world).
@johnnyfd get a hot water bottle, and FLASK or two, you can boil water and put it in flask and it'll keep warm for hours also if heating goes out but you can still make hot water on gas you can make the bottle and out it in your bed for some comfort... Also a few large buckets and fill them with water and store them so if water goes out you can tip it directly in the toilet every few days to flush away you'd probably get two flushes out of one bucket 🪣
I might suggest one of these heat-reflecting emergency blankets. The really do a good job, no hot water needed.
Also he can pee in bottles and heat himself; when water pipes will burst he can also collect, filter and drink it😪😋

Because of the war, I reconsidered all my views on home comforts. As it turned out, hundreds of things in our everyday life depend on electricity. Sewerage, water, heat, internet towers, even gas boilers.
Whatever did people do before the industrial revolution?

Ukrainians are related to Russians, they also speak Russian! Not to mention that the resources on that territory are not used for their well-being, but are used for the benefit of those in the West. There is nothing to defend! Do you want peace? Then it's simple: Don't fight! You have nothing to fight for! The media washes people brains and makes them hate each other!
This is our life in Libya since 2011, in the summer and when it gets cold in winter(between Dec and Apr) we have no power every 4 hours and sometimes the network collapses and we get a blackout. At this stage all businesses even government buildings have generators that work with diesel or gasoline, and for residential areas almost all middle class families and above have generators and diesel tanks in their houses. Every year we get promises from the government that they will start up new power stations but they always lyin'. So welcome to Libya where diesel, natural gas and petrol is cheaper than water but not enough electricity to power up the whole country. Such a shame :|
You got rid of Colonel Muamar Gadaffi - who was a crazy guy, but also did a lot of good things for the development of Libyia - and you replaced him with some tribal Islamists and a general that takes orders from Russia. No wonder things got worse.

Freshly married couples received an appartment and a marriage bonus out of the states budget, nobody had to starve, health care was for free. But - albeit his crazy moments - you have to admit that he is the creator of the modern nation of Libya. He lead the Bedouin tribes out of the Middle Ages directly into modernity.

We don’t even have a public transport system!!!! The eduction was a catastrophic failure, hence why most Libyan wanna study abroad, and most people don’t even know a second language. If we have good agriculture why do we import everything from abroad? What is social programs? I have never heard of that. Freshly married couple received an apartment and a bonus you said ? Then why are the guys in their 20s struggling working multiple jobs a day to try to get married ? And most of the end up failing as they can’t afford it, and actually gaddafi made a law that allow people without houses to steal other peoples houses(it’s called قانون رقم اربعة law number 4), yeah that’s really fucked up, we literally had no health care! Anyone who is sick has to travel to our neighboring country Tunisia for health care and if the family is more able financially they would try and travel to Germany. So long story short, he controlled Libya by organizing a coup, Libya was one of the most developing countries during the king, people were most educated during the king, and after Gaddafi people are just fighting for survival. This is the truth and if you ask any Libyan who is living in Libya, they have no other option than to agree.

As a first country born male I am sure this is super duper new experience for you and the world is now on cheering Qatar world cup (regardless of their human rights violation and clearly we need to boycotting them) soccer game without masks (even tho still we are fighting with covid) your video definitely reminds us the war is still going on and Ukrainian people and surrounding area have been continuously fighting and suffering. so surreal to see all these footages and news separately.

Stay strong and let Ukraine know we care a TON! From Iowa USA here and we literaly are ALL routing for you! We have periods due to blizzards some years here in Midwest and wind storms and tornados where we don't get power for times. But know we care a really dislike Russian government even more. Their attitude to others is why we tried to warn people about them for years. It is why we had the cold war to begin with. They sent spies (terrorists too) here since 1923. Before any major issues. We do not trust Russia but man do we love Ukraine and Europe too. Stay strong!

Hey! I’d say to invest in a few water storage jugs (at least 10gallons each)and fill when you do have water. Keep a filled water bucket near your toilet so you can flush waste. (Lived in Okinawa during drought and city water was turned off every other day. Also, buy unglazed clay flower pot with dish and tea lights. There is a way to give off heat when power is out. There are videos on You Tube how to fashion these cheap heaters, but word of warning, do not leave unattended. I hope this helps just in case.🤞

You need to plan now. Go to buy the clear plastic window kits to cover windows or plastic & tape to keep cold out. Rubber rope caulking for windows & doors. Insulating foam to fill gaps around pipes, gaps & cracks it is water resistant & reduce drafts. Door draft stopper. Sleeping bags. Good Luck. God Bless you & all the Ukrainians . Pamela

When I was a kid growing up in my village in Trinidad🇹🇹 we got water from springs and rain. Only recently my village received an brand new underground pipeline with desalinated pipe bourne water from the government and its really nice to have clean water.

A total immersion experience that will force you to push your limits and help you get to know yourself better. It is a big life experience that you will never forget. Get yourself 1 or 2 x 40 litre lidded buckets. 2 - 3 litres of water shunted quickly down the loo pan will flush waste away about 15/30 times then. Then if your 40/80 litres water runs out, make sure you have a good stock of kitchen bin liners and a spare toilet seat and you can use the bin for .... just tie and double up the bags really well after each sitting and bin with your garbage. Or you could buy a cheap camping toilet for less than $20 which is basically a 12 litre lidded bucket with a toilet seat on it and handle, or an in/expensive/luxury caravan compost toilet from $50 - $400. Hope you have a good camp store in Kyiv or Amazon deliveries? Toilets are more important than electricity in a real emergency. You can recycle some large plastic bottles and make a funnel from one to use for peeing. YOU GOT THIS JOHNNY. Best wishes. (Bit of a groan about the internet though, you might have to take up knitting thick blankets or ponchos to keep sane and warmer.
Johnny I used to live in Niagara Falls NY in an old apartment building called the Jefferson on Rainbow Blvd 300 yards from than actual falls. The rent in 2016 when I lived there was just $620 a month and the heating was including as it was radiators hot water in the lines and it worked very well. So well that sometimes you had to open the windows in winter a little. Radiators were quite good!
Johnny, Ikea sells led light bulbs with an integrated battery. It charges when there is power and when there is no power, there is an on-off button on the side. It is not too expensive at +-15$ and lights up for around 6 hours.
It's amazing what you can do when you have to. Well done, Johnny. When life is very difficult, the smallest of things can bring great pleasure, such as having electricity for a little while when you didn't expect it. Even though it's dangerous to be back in your home, I can tell you are actually relaxed and happy.
I think he is brave going back there to share in their plight and vlog about it.

The structures of Governments are like those of corporations. It offers services to customers (aka. people), in exchange for money (aka. taxes). So, the employees of the corrupt corporation called government don't work for people, only for themselves in the pursue of bigger and bigger profit at the expense of people well-being. They don't serve people, they see people as competitors/sources of income. We the people, are sovereign beings, if a corporation wants to sell us war, we have the right to refuse it. Don't take any injection governments/media promote, don't go to fight in a war for these corrupts governments corporation, nor go and defend them. People are manipulated to hate and kill each other. Putin is so cruel to bombed the civilian's infrastructures to punish them for having hopes of freedom from Russia. Ya you need your cooking pot to be around 2.25 inches above the gel canister alcohol fuel cooker. If you have an old soup can or coffee tin that is a few inches wider in diameter than the fuel can, you can make your own pot stand with that. Simply cut the soup can down to height and cut a window in the side for air flow. Really anything will work as a pot stand as long as its about 2.25 inch above the fuel can. You stove grate is too short for that. Once your gel runs out you can use the same can with denatured alcohol or 91 percent isopropyl in an emergency.
Johnny it's very easy to tell wether oven is electric or gas. Electric one has heating coils on the bottom and top and gas one has smooth bottom with holes on sides.
It's going to be a miserable freezing winter for many people in Ukraine. I think Johnny should go somewhere warmer for this winter and then hopefully return in the spring if things have calmed down by then ( that doesn`t look likely for now).

Buy plastic drums or huge pails for stocking up on water; buy preserved food; get a tent to preserve heat when sleeping if the heat quits on you.; LFP batteries

The district heating systems that were built in Kiev and other former Soviet cities are EXTREMELY efficient. A typical coal fired power plant only coverts about 1/3 of the embedded energy in the coal to electricity. About another 1/3 is lost through waste heat that is typically left to evaporate through cooling towers adjacent to the power plant. A district heating system reuses the waste heat by piping it through the city in winter rather than letting it evaporate. It is basically free heat, since it is left over from generating the electricity.
Not sure if Russia is blowing up just the transformers or the entire power stations, but if they blow up the power stations, or Ukraine doesn't have enough gas/coal, then eventually the district heating system will go out too. Russia holds almost all of the cards in the energy war and they know it.

@johnnyfd Just a thought, but I have spent the last 40 years in Florida. When the storms are coming and there is a chance of loss of water, we fill up the tubs, sinks, and every bottle we have. Not just to drink, but to flush the toilet. The latter being equally as important, unless you like dumping in the woods.

Can use the water you washed in for toilet flush. No need to waste fresh clean water.

@@carolwilliams8511 You can do anything you want, but keep in mind the goal is to store as much clean water in all available containers as is possible, not store dirty water. What we generally do is use wet wipes to clean for a few days then wash as necessary using a quart or two of clean water.
Johnny make sure you pick up a water filter for hiking, and some water purification tablets. Nothing is more important than ensuring a source of water, without water you won't last 2 days. Those gel stoves you got take FOREVER to boil even a small pot of water, there is no hope you could boil something like that big frozen soup bowl you have with them. Also have an escape plan. Take care bud
Those gel cannisters are used for catering events when there is a bain marie to keep hot food hot. They are not meant to cook on.

Interesting that an unexpected result of the cuts looks like more people going out to cafes for some heat/light/warm food. Also, that's a district heating system, only one I know of in the UK is Sheffield where social housing and city centre buildings use the service - non recyclable waste is burnt for energy, and the ash also used in road building. It's been in use a long time.
You should boil water put into a thermos flask for when the power goes out so have hot water for coffee/ tea etc
Also freeze large containers of water to place in fridge to keep fridge cool when power is out.
Also you can use outdoor Solar landscape lights for indoor use. Just set them outside during the day and they charge for use. They are under $2.00 each, I have 20 or so of them.
Gotta get yourself some portable battery packs, charge up when you have power, use it when you don't. This would be a perfect use for them, and maybe a solar panel just in case.
You should contact EcoFlow and let them sponsor your video. They have some awesome, compact battery backups that can charge from the wall when the power is on, and will give you power when it is off.
Buy a hometrainer Johnny. You can generate power with a dynamo, you will get warm and loose weight
Johnny, thats central heating. it´s mostly common in whole europe. you have a furnace (oil, gas, wood, solar) a hot water storage and a waterpump. Or a city heating system (fernwärme) and in every room at least one radiator. or a floorheating system (what follows the same principe, hot water pumps through a line and heats the surroundings.
When it comes to cellular data, try using another carrier as they have different towers that might work during the outages

Johnny, the heating system of having CHPs like Kiev is wayyyyy more efficient. Obviously i dont know exactly where your pipes come from or types of power stations but in general: Normally western power stations have big evaporative cooling towers (the dumpy fat chimney looking things), instead they are doing their cooling by having a massive network of pipes running through the neigbourhood. Also CHP stands for Combined Heat and Power. Bascially they burn gas in a turbine to turn a generator, then the exhaust gasses are used to make steam, again this is used for heating neaigbourhoods. As long as the pipes between the power station and neigbourhood are well insulated then its rediculously efficient. You are effectively using what would normally be waste heat from generating the power. Places like Helsiinki also having amazing CHP type systems...... All this said, if theirs not enough electricity to go around, it will be the same with the heat generated.

I've lived in communist Romania in the 80's. Without a war, without any prospects that the power infrastructure might be affected for days or weeks by bombs, I've lived powercuts for hours / nights and no central heating. It is not fun at all. But we had no option back then like you. I'm watching your channel since you started the collaboration with Mr. Bald, I like your attitude/love for Ukraine, but what you are doing looks foolish now. I think we all know that most likely now that winter is coming things will become much worse before things turns for the better. You either prep a little bit (solar generators, gas generator), maybe even a small woodstove and some wood because that central heating at least in parts of Romania comes from power stations which uses the residual heat after going through the steam turbines, still has a lot of energy in terms of heat but not enough to produce electricity, but is perfect for these central heating systems. Other uses plain gas to heat the water. Both of these types of infrastructure are and will be attacked by the orcs. If prepping is too bothersome for you because it is hard, inconvenient because is heavy, etc. go temporarily to other country or back to US. I might be wrong and I would like to be wrong in this case, but if I'm not then you might get surprised very easily and very quickly. A nice cozy coffee shop will not help you through the winter.

Central and district heating is very widespread in northern europe. But it depends on distance to a heating facility, so while almost all apartments in bigger cities can have central heating, individual homes on the countryside will have to rely on other sources.
Also, the system with no temperature control is a soviet relic. We have a thermostat on each heater unit that allows setting the desired temperature and potentially turning it off and we pay based on how much we use.
Central heating can be very effective as it can be run on a variety of different sources of power. So it can be surplus heat from energy production, it can be run on gas or it can be run on renewables. In Denmark we have a very high production of renewable energy, so while many central heating facilities used to run on power produced from gas, most have now switched to renewables thanks to the war in Ukraine and in these cases prices for central heating is not affected much. People who live in individual homes relying on a gas heater suffer, though.
And district heating (remote heating) also allows for the possibility of mass storage of energy, something that is too expensive with batteries. There is one place in Denmark where they converted a former gravel pit into a giant heat storage "battery".The water in the converted gravel pit is not hot enough so that it can be turned efficiently into electricity, but it is fine for district heating.
We have central heating in Serbia and it was off course in all off Yugoslavia and most important plus is that it can run on pretty much everything state have at that moment .
Gas,Coal,Mazut..so in 90s when we had war ,total sanction ,bombings we still had heat.
Also thermal electric power stations are connected to central heating so waste off that heat is used
The way the heating is set up, they can't casually turn it on and off. You need that permanently on. That gives you hot water, which you can let cool to get cold water. I lived through utility shortages in Kazakhstan as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the 90s.
Also load up on water!! Fill a bathtub up if you have one! Just in case there is a shortage!
There's a camping shower thingy you can get for pretty cheap. Works off a rechargeable battery. Just need warm water. Ps it's cool you hang with Brandon, watch his vids too

In Poland cities its also central heatings in most of larger buildings. Its quite good solution for such times as you have in Kiev now. For shortqges you can use electric heating radiators or warm up with gas from kitchen.
I will never forget that during the war, I used to wake up at 3 AM when electricity comes back to play games on my C64. We got electricity like once in 10-14 days, for couple of hours only... I then devised a minimum power requirment for lightning and some entertainment (radio or mobile phone nowdays), which is 12W of continuous power.

Those gel burners are designed to keep food warm that’s sitting in (pre-boiled) water-filled chafing dishes. The intensity of heat is low because of the small surface area. For cooking you’ll need a camping-type stove if you’re worried about gas being cut-off. The cheapest models are those single unit hot-pot models popular in Asian countries that use disposable gas canisters.

Johnny, you should have a look at mobile charging stations like EcoFlow, Jackery, FlashFish, etc. I got one and it's a life-saver. You can feed your internet (if you're on GPON), mobile, macbook and other stuff. Those stations are in high demand right now, but you can still find some shops with those in stock.
They have EcoFlow, and the others in Europe Look them up if you can get one try for the liFePO4 in EcoFlow best battery.
Yep, second generation of EcoFlow devices like River 2 or Delta 2 have LifePO batteries inside.

Eggs cook better when at room temperature, there not as runny. so crack a few in a small bowl let them get to room temp before you fry them up, heat the pan up to so the eggs will congeal better. Put a little butter in the pan, coat it then toast some bread in it. Then do the fried eggs.

@JohnnyFD You should try to find a way to get your hands on a dual/tri fuel generator. Many simple cheap dual fuel models even would be more than sufficient and operate with often gasoline and propane. You can switch back and forth depending what's available.
Additionally, if you've got natural gas still when no power, use the gas for the generator. There are simple conversion attachments/kits to switch between propane/LPG and 'natural gas'. Also there are many models that can use diesel, kerosene and various combinations.
Of course wouldn't be a bad idea for possible solar/battery options but fuels are the friend and options to utilize will help.
You can safely run it on your convenient balcony. Just make sure it's properly ventilated out there and any electrical cords entering Don't allow any fumes into the apartment. It is absolutely critical for any generator to be able to breathe and have decent airflow thus eliminating the chance for fumes/c02/monoxide etc to get into the house.
***Noticed you don't have Carbon Monoxide detectors in your place; please get several asap irregardless. No reason not to.***

Before you lose heat make plans for how you can winterize your apartment and if you have the options how to isolate your apartment from the heating system in case it all freezes and breaks. I dont know how exactly it works in Kyiv but if its like NY is will all be on steam/water and after you lose power all the pipes in your building will freeze and break. This includes your toilets, sinks, shower, ect. there are all sorts of ways to deal with it but you will want to plan for it now.
Johnny, don't use the jelled fuel in an inclosed room, for safety reasons, open a window at least for fresh air if you cook with it, don't try and use it to heat a room. If the can has alcohol, be carefull during the daylight hours, cause you won't see any flame, In the dark the flame will be a blue color. Don't bump it over and get burnt. Again, don't breathe the fumes cuz there TOXIC. IF you buy a bottle canister camp single burner stove, remember to warm the canister up some, use body heat to do this. They don't perform well in very cold temps, the butane ones I mean. The liquid fuel stoves like Coleman, you need to pump it up for presure, they sound like a jet engine on an after-burner, loud as hell. Suggest you get a couple of thermoses to keep things hot for a long time. Oh,...and a battery Head-Lamp to keep both hands free.

Right outside the cabin there was a stream from which I fetched water.
The bad part for me was that the temperature go down to - 32 degrees in one week, this I wake up many times in the night so the temperature not go so very low down inside the cabin. This is not easy for you so stay in the city, I think you full up you bottle with water 💦 and buy one extra drink water every time you go to the shop. And see you can buy sleep bag of camping ⛺️ or you can found beautiful neighbour so I think come to be hot in bedroom.

The “central” hot water/ heat system is crap. I lived in Kiev and I know. The closer your flat is to the water source the better you are. The pipes freeze over and those left outside that shit infrastructure are left with nothing or best cold water. Many baths I had were from boiling water to add to the rest. However, my friend lived 2 blocks from said water facility and always had hot water.

Solar powered garden lights are really useful. The small ones that can be put on tables in the evening. They are usually quite cheap to buy. Don't need batteries. Safer than candles.

Good luck on the days ahead. I live in the mountains and our power goes out quite frequently, sometimes for a week or more at a time, and I know how challenging this can be. We are so used to having TV, Internet etc. that when things are out we become so bored. Time to read some books.
Grab some solar panels!!! You get some hours of daylight, for now, you can charge phones etc. even if it's just a bit.
If I were you, I would probably invest in a generator set at the very minimum, even if it is a small unit only capable of producing only a few kilowatts of electrical current (so you can keep the bare minimum necessities) such as refrigeration & food preparation as well as basic lighting and various other domestic things that would benefit from a more stable or reliable source of electrical current.
I learned of this with my experiences being deployed in Iraq in 2004~2006 and where we derived all of our electrical current or power from diesel generator sets.
You could probably benefit from deep-cycle marine/RV deep-cycle batteries & a DC to AC power inverter that will convert your stored DC battery power into a useful, pure-sine wave household AC voltage (probably 230V, ~ 50Hz in your region, and along with the compatible electrical plug/receptacles in your country/region.
I personally have a 9KW running watt portable generator with a long supply cable that gets plugged into a power inlet that is mounted to a main transfer switch that isolates the generator from the utility power grid, preventing dangerous back-feed conditions, when a generator is directly connected to your house electrical system and is not isolated from the power-grid without opening or turning off the main principal circuit breaker that is responsible for the entire electrical service or installation.

I read somewhere that generators are taxfree in Ukraine. Availability could be a problem. Ukraine_tbic ordered 6500 euros 13kVA generator from EU. Without tax cheaper. Showed on a video November 11th.
Also some EcoFlow power stations that can be charged in the stairway and redistribute electricity to neighbours.
If you have any heating issues you can heat some rock similar to a sauna using your stove. Stones can hold heat for a while. Wrap them in a safe wrapping so it's safe to the touch and you can use that to keep warm, also would work within your bed under the blankets. Just be careful doing so.
1. Please try to buy a stove, don't mcgayver stuff with fire inside of your apartment.
2. Not sure about those, but if its ethanol based its possible that its flame will be almost invisible so before throwing it out make sure that it really isn't on fire, my friend burned his garbage bin because of invisible ethanol flame.
3. You can buy piezo igneters for gas stoves, they don't need any fuel nor electricity.
Dont use propane or map gas to heat up your apartment if power is out, it's very dangerous and have to worry about carbon monoxide. Throw on some more blankets and Slava Ukraini!💛💙💛💙💛
You can make a small burner from a big can, like Arizona tea or Chernihivske beer cans. Look up tutorials on RUclips.

If you can get your hands on some BioLites, they are solar powered small square lights people use them for backpacking and camping. Charge them in the sun they run 7-8 hours. I got some off Amazon

Municipal central heat can be amazingly efficient. Compared to US practice, it's essentially free or close to it. Municipal central heat uses the condensation cycle at power plants to transfer what would normally be thrown away as waste heat from the power plant uses it to heat large chunks of the city center. It's thousands of megawatts of raw thermal power the US throws away. However, when it does not work, it does not work big. The comparison to US practice is compounded by the fact that in the US we use a lot of the electricity to generate heat, so central municipal systems like you have free up load on the electrical grid by using the waste heat to heat homes.
If it gets too cold in your bedroom, set up your tent on your bed and sleep in there. The confined area of a tent should hold your body heat better. Get a towel and wrap your electric kettle when it's done heating the water. The insulation will prolong the heated water. Next, I'd stock up on baby wipes to clean my face, armpit...etc. Stock up on candles, battery & water. Focus on food that doesn't require so much cooking (fruits, sandwiches). Can't say anything about going to the bathroom....wishing you the best.

You should not heat up the whole bowl of soup each time as it will spoil fast, just put a portion in a separate dish and heat it up
Those gel things are warmers for to keep food warm like when you’re at a buffet. Not really used for cooking
Look at getting a Blue Yetti. Basically it’s a battery powered generator. Can plug in pretty much anything (regular outlet, 12v, usb, etc). You can also get solar panels to charge it as well.
As long as you have heat just get something comparable to a Jackery 500 or higher and keep it charged when the power is on and if you have a south facing window you can get a solar panel for it too, use usb LED lights and you should be fine!
