Talent management is the process of developing and managing people. It's a way to ensure that you have the right talent in place, at the right time, for the right job. It involves identifying what skills are needed, where they can be found, how they can best be developed, and helping them do their jobs well. Talent management aims to help your organization achieve its goals by providing an environment that supports employees to perform at their highest levels. Let me offer you another point of view. Replace your organisational chart i.e. managing/controlling people with an organisational structure that is based on purpose and ownership (=engagement). Instead of focusing on getting the most out of people and replacing them when the technology changes (need for a new/different talent), focus on improving the "cockpits" (process/system) in which people work. If/when people leave they will add value to the society by already having become great "pilots" and your system will not lose much as your "cockpits" will enable new "pilots" to "fly well" quickly. Job descriptions will be much easier to manage as you will only maintain a list of "cockpits" people are competent of operating. In addition to that, if you share business acumen with your people you will grow new leaders, which will make your business much more resilient to and adaptable to changes. Plus, why limit your mind on managing one business only, when you can acquire more businesses, repeat the whole pattern by giving your people chance to lead and continue to add more value to the society. You can call the new arrangement a syndicate, a cooperative, etc. However, it is the trust and respect that come out as emergent properties that will provide the best foundation for the true talent management as the new generation of kids grow in a positive environment that offer low resistance to learning i.e. develop their natural talent.
If HR has only a reactive approach on Talent management, it‘s no suprise that the HR Funktion will be considered a Support Funktion instead of a strategic contributor
