  • Starting a new city! Help me pick a name for it! This is part 1 of the second season of my unmodded Cities: Skylines let's play series - Design and Manage: "How to Start a New City (the smart way)".
Cities: Skylines is a city-building game developed by Colossal Order and published by Paradox Interactive.

    About this series: bit.ly/t4r-DM2
'Design and Manage' is a Cities: Skylines let's play series that focuses on what are for me two core aspects of the game: Design (eye candy, aesthetically pleasing layouts, road systems and districts) and Management (earning a positive income while providing all necessary services to maintain a functional city and a healthy traffic flow).
This series is played without mods.
    Map: Murky Coast (Campus DLC).
Main DLCs installed: After Dark, Snowfall, Natural Disasters, Mass Transit, Green Cities, Parklife, Industries, Campus, Sunset Harbor.

Hi, T4rget! I'm glad to see you back! Even though I didn't get to watch the entire season 1 yet, you inspired me a lot for my cities in this game and learned a lot through practice as well. That's why I have a few suggestions/ideas for things from this episode:
    1) at 9:05 you could have placed the next parallel water pipe by skipping that road to the next; doing so you wouldn't have overlapped water coverage from the two pipes = efficiency + cost reduction overall.
    2) With the last update Sunset Harbor, we now have a new inland sewage drain facility that can be placed in a polluted area (like industrial or the garbage landfill) and you can also save the water from pollution; cost and maintenance have the same values like the water drain.
    3) on this kind of spots like the one at 9:27, my personal approach is to not zone those tiles because it is very likely to build an intersection there or to extend the road network or to simply place a small bunker in the future (which is 2x3 tiles) or connect some pedestrian pathway; the same goes for placing service buildings: I avoid destroying houses (except if I'm doing a major development in the city (like a huge interchange or a monument); I wouldn't like to be evicted from my house just to have a fire station built over which could have been placed on the empty space on the other side of the road. I hope these ideas will help you manage and enjoy your cities better in the future, as I did from your videos. Stay healthy my friend!

Citizen: There is an empty space over there. You can place a Fire house there.
You: Nope, I'm gonna destroy your house.

Using the dirt road was a pretty smart idea indeed. What's the thought process when spacing out the areas to leave a 1 block empty line?

I always like to add districts as soon as they are available and start naming neighborhoods and applying policies. I usually add the power and water conservation policies early on.
For names, I use a random name generator. My current favorite generator is at Behind The Name (behindthename.com/random/ but I always turn on the surname randomizer as well). I'll usually use a random name to rename parks (sometimes shortening the first and middle names to initials), and a random surname as the base for my neighborhood and city names.

I've been playing for a couple of years but your money saving tips like dirt roads and adjusting the budget were new to me. It makes me want to do a city without the money apps I usually use just to avoid the hasssle.
