I think you have the lens in full mode that why the focus hunting, the lens going to infinity to macro, when shooting portraits set the lens on ♾-0.5m it will performed better
The minimum working focal distance is a little over 5 inches with this...not quite right up to the lens, but, some cheap extension tubes definitely let you do that. Then your depth of field becomes even more crazy shallow though. I'm thinking of getting a macro focusing rack for this and have been procrastinating.
I have this lense and love it. I only have a 35mm and this 90mm and with those 2 I can do almost everything I want. With this lens I've made beautifull landscapes and sunset.. Portrets and macro. 👌🏽
Hi Pablo i have the 85 1.8 but really enjoy taking macro too, shall i return my 85 and get this 90 macro so i can do portraits and macro 2 for price of 1... i also have the 24mm 1.4 gmaster which is awesome for those wider shots and good for astro and street stuff. Itd be nice just to own two decent lenses that cover near enough everything i want
@@ChannaEdirisinghe if you take a lot of portraits, weddings etc the 85 1.8 is awesome, but if not id go for the other. I tend to use the wider 24mm than anything else
I finally got my 90mm lens today. My question is, how do i replicate your technique to get close photoshoot of eyes like the one on your video thumbnail image? I mean in terms of distance, aperture and speed 😁🤔
I think I was within a couple centimeters of her eye, wide open, and probably iso bumped up quite a bit due to how much light you need when you’re that close
Great review man! Trying to decide between the 85mm 1.8 and this lens. I think im sold on the macro. More versatility and I already own the sigma 135mm 1.8 for the creamy bokeh shots. Subscribed
Great review Marc! I just rented this lens from Tempe Camera last weekend to test out before I bought it, and it's the perfect lens for beauty portraits. Now I'm just waiting for Amazon to get it stock so I can order it...lol
@@MarcTaraz , I ended up ordering to get in line, they estimated delivery at the end of July, but I just received it last Sunday. Very excited to start shooting with it as soon as this second Covid wave dies down here in AZ.
Dude, this video is very helpful. You helped me big time. Plus, want to take this time to appreciate your talking head segment. Very aesthetically pleasing. 🔥
Im looking at getting a Sony A7R iii or maybe waiting for the A7R iv to come out but am definitly gonna get this lens for the camera along with Sony G 70mm-300mm lens
I just got the A7III with a kit lens 28-70, 18mm batis, 90mm macro and the 70-300mm. Next up I definitely want the 24mm 1.4 GM then maybe the 24-105 for travel.
I personally would not use this lens for wedding photography. I'd prefer the 85mm instead of this. You can make any lens work for anything, but I don't know any wedding photographers that use this on wedding day
Thats really up to you and how YOU shoot, as well as your budget! For me I absolutely LOVE the 85 1.8. I'm not usually doing super macro work that requires the 90, and I like having the wider apeture on the 1.8. It's smaller and lighter too, and more affordable. But that's just me and how I shoot!
great video thanks! Please give me some advice Which lens is better for portrait photography and why? Sony FE 85mm F/1.8. sony 90mm macro .85mm sigma art. i like macro it has very high sharpness and actually you can use it for portrait and prodoct and macro photography but the 90 macro will be slower and heavier Aperture blades don’t fully retract and bokeh highlights show aperture blade shap
You're gonna want a wide lens for those kinds of vids, Id say probably a focal length between 16 and 35 full frame equivilant. The 90 is a lil tight for that kind of stuff
The 90mm is really great for those detail shots of products, but it depends on what kind of product work you're looking to do! I've really been liking my 35mm for product work too!
Marc Taraz Steiner Definitely! You’re getting a much wider view with the 35 mm so probably great for theme shots with the products and lifestyle. We’re wanting to get shots of shears so will probably need a macro lens to get up close & personal.
You pointed out that optical stabilization in this lens is a great advantage. But if you're using a Sony camera, the camera body already has optical stabilization, and I saw a video test by an expert who found that an optically stabilized lens does not add any extra stabilization to the already stabilized Sony camera. Very good review overall though.
I bought this lens for 750€ "used" (nearly new) for nature macros and use it also for pet photography. For human Portraits it is a little bit too sharp in my opinion. But this lens is amazing for all the details in fur and close ups for eyes, wow.
Hello when I put it in manual mode, I zoom perfectly from a distance, but when I shoot the zoom it disappears and the photo is seen from afar, what could it be?
My only guess is that you're seeing the manual focus helper, which punches in on the images to make sure your focus is right. That's not actually what your image framing looks like
Hi, I just bought this lens . I heard a noise ( kind of squeaking) and also I noticed that it focus alone in en out several times. It is normal ? Thanks
I think you have the lens in full mode that why the focus hunting, the lens going to infinity to macro, when shooting portraits set the lens on ♾-0.5m it will performed better
I am thinking of buying this lens and the Sony A7iii. So excited!
In my experience this lens works just as well with Sony camera bodies costing a third of the price (ie: a Sony 6000)
I have Sony A7SII and I'll buy this lens for food photography/videography.. Thanks for the awesome review!

Would you recommend this lens for over the head and tilted food videography as well?
I'm glad you liked it! Do you mean like a birds eye view top down angle?

can you use this lense on a lumix gh5s and stabilize it with the ronin sc?
Not that I'm aware of.... I don't think there are any sony to m43rds adapters and it is a lil long to properly balance on the SC
