    Great review of the 90mm Arthur. I very much enjoyed shooting macro this summer but only have the budget Sony 75-210 with some extension tubes - this does work pretty well, but am considering an upgrade to a dedicated macro lens so your review will help any decisions. Congrats to you and Janessa and baby Lucas on your lovely new house, very homely. Greetings from South Wales, UK.

    • @VinizioOficial
      @VinizioOficial 4 года назад +2

      Hi Dave I have one question, the 90mm is a FE lens and he’s testing it out with a APS-C camera, then is not a 90mm at all right?

    • @DavePruett
      @DavePruett 4 года назад +1

      @@VinizioOficial sometimes the semantics and the physics get a bit jumbled up. I hesitate to answer because there are certain real differences in the way a lens performs on a full frame versus a crop frame sensor, but there are also a lot of myths and misunderstandings that provoke heated arguments in comment sections, and I don't want to argue or write an optics treatise. (There are great videos on RUclips explaining the pros/cons of using a FF lens on and APS-C body and also using a APS-C lens on a FF body.) At the risk of getting flamed mercilessly, I'll say this: it is still a 90mm lens, but the effective field of view that the APS-C sensor sees is 135mm (1.5 crop factor times 90 mm). So the image you get with the 90mm on a APS-C body is the same as you would get with a 135 mm lens on a FF body (all other things being equal).

      If you really want to achieve great results with macro, use micro four-thirds.
      The M.Zuiko 60mm f2.8 will give you 2:1 magnification and a wider focus area. Not to mention that most Olympus mirrorless bodies have built-in focus bracketing and stacking.
      The 90mm Sony performs really well as a portrait lens, though.

      Probably use a digital darkroom software. It will be very hard to get the right image look using the camera settings which you would have to change according to every camera angle change and lighting change. Just use basic photography skills to get as good a capture as possible and then worry about the exact look later...

    For anyone serious about macro photography with their Sony mirrorless, I'd point them to the 100mm F2.8 ultra macro from Laowa. It's razor sharp and provides double the magnification over the Sony. It's built like a tank and has a 13 blade diaphragm. It's almost always back-ordered at only $450. Like most serious macro glass it's completely manual, but works great for portraits as well (no focusing distance switch required).

    Congratulation for your new house! Wish you best and happines always. I have one question, which one is better... Sony macro 90 or Sigma 70 f2.8 macro on Sony APS-C body? I am looking for fix tele portrait with macro capability (only for jewelry product photography, not for insect) lens on my A6000. Sony 90 is famous for its sharpness, but I think Sigma 70 is more effective on APS-C body since it will give shorter working focal length. Thanks in advance!

    • @0ooTheMAXXoo0
      @0ooTheMAXXoo0 4 года назад

      Sony has better AF and has image stabilization and focuses internally. Sigma has similar image quality (great sharpness) but barrel extends as you focus closer (you probably do not mind). Also Sigma has less chromatic aberration. The Laowa 65mm f2.8 for APS-c and the Laowa 100mm f2.8 for full frame are your best options if you do not need autofocus. They are 2:1 so you can get closer and both are apochromatic (pretty much zero chromatic aberration) which you will want for jewelry photography (the Sigma is almost as good in this way). Definitely I would stay away from the 90mm macro just because you are shooting jewelry and that lens has a quite a bit more chromatic aberrations than newer macro lenses tend to have.

    Hi, could you do a review of the a6400 with the sony 16-55mm f2.8 in the future. Theres a lot of people talking about the A6600 and Sony 16-55mm f2.8 combo but not much when used with a non stabilised body like the A6000, 6100, 6300 and 6400. Its hard to rent this lens in Australia for a few days (usually requires a few months) but may be alot easier to do so in the US. Keep up the good work.

    • @0ooTheMAXXoo0
      @0ooTheMAXXoo0 4 года назад

      There will be no image stabilization, otherwise everything else is the same. Any review that shows the stabilization would also show unstabilized... Not sure what you are missing or asking for? Why would there be a difference other than the stabilization?

  • @robertcudlipp485
    @robertcudlipp485 4 года назад +5

    Arthur, your pockets must be a touch deeper ( and why not) from those days, seeingly now an aeon ago, when you were cobbling a6000 packages with vintage glass. I will be retaining my a6000 for a while yet ( with excellent glass, mainly Sigma) and may migrate to a6400- that AF is pretty appealing!! or may wait until the a6000 replacement reaches Australia. As we have a lousy exchange, the real cost in Australia, partly due to the mad trade war with China, is appx 30% higher than the USA.
    Really doubt that Sony does heavy-duty R and D, focus groups etc into what market needs or wants for new models.
    The top of the range a6600 will doubtless sell, but you would have, have to get to the top glass to get the most out of your body investment. I don't mind spending $'s on quality glass, as you can keep it forever and updates don't add pixels to it, IBIS/OSSs, or the like generally and hold IQ and value pretty well. My glass, in the non-Sony system, is over a decade old, and I can't extract the maximum from L series glass or more recent Sigma Art primes.
    Keep the videos coming.

    • @0ooTheMAXXoo0
      @0ooTheMAXXoo0 4 года назад +1

      Oh, "budget"... Well, Laowa 65mm f2.8 2:1 macro is one of the cheaper macro lenses and one of the best in image quality. You will not get anything with decent AF for less than this Sony 90mm f2.8 unless you go for a wider lens like the 30mm f3.5 macro. For longer reach there is the Laowa 100mm f2.8 macro which is apochromatic and does 2:1 macro which is rare... If you do not need AF then a lot of macro lenses can be adapted from other lens mounts like the SIgma 150mm f2.8 or the Irix 150mm f2.8, or the tamron 90mm f2.8...

    • @0ooTheMAXXoo0
      @0ooTheMAXXoo0 4 года назад +1

      There are other such comparisons if you search youtube. Quick summary of what I have found: Sony AF is better. IQ is close (sony is one of the sharpest lenses ever made though). Sigma has way less chromatic aberrations like a lot of newer macro lenses (though Sony is better than most older macro lenses). Sigma lens barrel extends as you focus on closer distances. Both have focus breathing (they zoom in as you focus closer). If you do not want AF there are some amazing options like the Laowa 100mm f2.8 2:1 macro and the Irix 150mm f2.8 macro. The 65mm f2.8 2:1 macro from Laowa is another great and small lens if you only need APS-C and want a really small lens with great image quality. Hard to beat the price of the Sigma 70mm for that amazing image quality and it has working AF even if it is slow-ish. Those Laowa lenses are all around that Sigma price but they have no AF at all...

    The M.Zuiko 60mm f2.8 will give you 2:1 magnification and a wider focus area. Not to mention that most Olympus mirrorless bodies have built-in focus bracketing and stacking.
    The 90mm Sony performs really well as a portrait lens, though.

    To add to your excellent review Arthur, a6400 has NO focus stacking and a6400+G or GM lenses is NOT water resistant.
    It's too late for me now because I already have dumped too much money into the a6400 and Sony lenses, but for macro, the a6400 lacks focus bracketing. Olympus, Nikon, Panasonic and Fujifilm all have focus bracketing for post processing with focus STACKING software. I've been focus stacking using a bluetooth remote with my a6400; it's a pain...and by using a focus rail. post processing with Helicon Focus. The long focal length is great since it allows the lens to be far from the subject.
    I have both this 90mm G macro and the 85mm f1.8 GM. Both were acquired in part because of moisture resistance as is the a6400(purportedly) that is STATED IN SONY LITERATURE and ON THEIR WEBSITE. This lens does NOT have a gasket at the mount. The GM lens does have a gasket at the mount. HOWEVER, the gasket makes NO CONTACT with the a6400's mount; rendering the "seal" at the mount useless and NOT water resistant other than by the virtue of metal to metal contact of the lens and body. This DESIGN FLAW is quite a surprise too me and almost worth a lawsuit against Sony for fraud!
    Other than these two issues the camera and lenses are excellent!
    Your reviews are excellent and thanks to your positive review, I have the Laowa 9mm; great lens for architecture!

    I am a beginner. I have sony a6300 and a7iii and the following lenses: sigma 16mm f1.4, sigma 56mm f1.4, sony 10-18mm f4, sony 18-105mm f.4, sony 85mm f1.8, sony 70-200mm f.4, sony 24mm f1.4 GM. I also have a dji Osmo Pocket with a macro lens. Basically I use these for my my music videos and portraits. I am gradually getting into full time photography as I am getting more offers on portraiture. I was considering adding a tamron 28-75mm f2.8 to my lenses but I have also been thinking of adding a macro lens to my gears. I can’t afford both lenses as of now. Which one would you suggest for me, please? Thank you so much

    Seems like a great lens for video, I wonder how the bad/good the focus breathing is. Its something you could touch in your lens reviews since a lot of the people who watch your videos are filmmakers

      This lens zooms out a lot at longer distances. Big changes in focal length with changes to the focal plane. Seems to match other lenses at 90mm so I am deducing that it is wider than advertised when focused at longer distances.

      A lot of macro lenses has focus breathing BTW. You might want to try non-macro lenses for video work.

    Hi Arthur really nicely done review. After two system-switches I still can't get over the Fuji XF90 f2 lens and I refuse to believe there's anything in the price range can get close to that; I'm also shooting the a6400 nowadays judging from your samples, the Sony doesn't look bad at all.

      Several macro lenses test better and almost all are cheaper than that $1000 lens... Not many macro lenses have good AF though so is that what is better with that lens?

    • @kian8382
      @kian8382 4 года назад

      @@0ooTheMAXXoo0 The Fuji 90 isn't a macro lens though it can conveniently focus quite close, the Sigma 70 is a very good macro lens but lacks I.S. and focuses slow, so the Sony 90 2.8 does seem to be the better jack of all trade.

      The xf 90 f2 isn't even close to this lens, this macro is one of the sharpest sony lenses ever. In fact some will say the xf 80 f2.8 is better than the xf 90 f2 for anything that's not portraits or indoor sports, faster autofocus with OIS and sharper (but way too heavy for a macro lens).

    I believe the F2.8 Aperture should be equivalent to F4.2 since as used as in APSC mode it needs to be multiplied by 1.5 crop factor. Nevertheless as a 135mm equivalent telephoto lens there is still some nice boquet... Right?
    I stayed couple years at Dallas and really enjoyed the weather most of the year (ecxept summer) and almost bought a house like this one in 2000 when we had our kid (Texan Boy). Was about 180000 euros (really cheap compared to where I leave now in Europe...) I hope it did not change much now.
    I'm a great fan of your channel. Keep up with the good reviews and waiting for the A6600.

    • @0ooTheMAXXoo0
      @0ooTheMAXXoo0 4 года назад +2

      Aperture does not change when an image is cropped nor does its depth of field. It will look exactly like a 90mm f2.8 shot with a full-frame camera that is then cropped in photoshop. All a crop camera is doing is cropping away the image outside of its sensor. It does not change anything about the lens itself. When used with an APS-C camera it will not look like a 135mm f2.8, that is true, but it will look like a 90mm f2.8 that is then cropped. Depth of field is also not something you can figure out the 135mm equivalent of by multiplying by 1.5 since depth of field does not change the same as the crop factor. Better to just think of it as a 90mm f2.8 lens that gets cropped.
