  • Quite a while ago I did a whole prayer plant care video (back in Ep 31): • Prayer Plant (Marantac... , so this was just one of many plants that could be classified as "prayer plants" in the Marantaceae family. I find Ctenanthe to be far more resilient than most Calathea or Goeppertia, for instance, and I think make a great houseplant and therefore sweeps in at #122 of "365 Days of Plants".
In this video I'll cover where it's native to, how it grows, where it grows, and best conditions for lighting, watering, fertilizing and more.

All the beauty of calathea without all the drama! 😂 Definitely my personal favorite Marantaceae. I find they will love you big time if you provide a humidity tray or pebble tray. Also, if you're a plant parent that likes to move your plants around a lot use caution because sudden upward spikes in light make this plant very grouchy and it will curl & fade on you.

@John Decou I do not have a problem with fungus gnats in general. This is mainly for three reasons: First and foremost not overwatering my growing medium. Second, I do not a use peat based growing medium. I use coco coir in my mix instead of peat. Lastly, when using a humidity tray I never allow the water to touch the bottom of the pot.

You are so right. I always know it's upset with something I've done cuz it starts to curl it's leaves! This one doesn't like to move!

My dad has had one for 25 years and it's always had about 10 leaves on it. I've been plant sitting it for a couple of months and I changed to using rain water and misting it daily. It started to sweat salt initially so I flushed the soil through and repotted it and now it's putting out new leaves every day. After soaking my tillandsia in rain water I drop the pot in the tub to soak and it seems to love that.

Oooh! this one is on my wish list, I have 5 plants that are in the prayer plant family, I think it's fascinating the way the leaves fold up, and the deep purple under leaf color. I have found that they do like more moist soil and humidity, so far the ones I have are happy. Thank you again Summer, see you again tomorrow.

Mine actually had spider mites when I brought them home. I stupidly didn't inspect the plant before bringing it home, it looked healthy and I was excited to find such a love pot for so cheap! I never had spider mites before in any of my house plants. I maintain "good" bugs in my house to treat any pests in my houseplants. However, the spider mites disappeared pretty quickly, surprisingly, as I have heard that they are the worst pests to get rid of!

Mine is thriving although i was scared it would die. they indeed need a lot of humidity. I give it distilled water (reused from my dehumidifier) 2 times a week and i spray it daily. It is in the darkest corner of my room and is doing very well. it is not growing towards light so I guess it is okay.

Hello Summer! Thx for the great video! I've got a Ctenanthe by myself since around four years or longer... I wasn't really interested into proper care back then... I watered her about once a month or less because I was afraid to overwater it. But it never died because of starvation 😱😱😱

Mine is in front of an east facing window that's blocked by the neighboring house. It's also in just above a vent. I water mine once a week, sometimes once every two weeks. Remarkably, it is by far my healthiest plant. It's inexplicable. I have five marantacea in my bathroom with high humidity, water them, mist them, use a dechlorinator in the water... they're not as nice. It's mindboggling. Maybe i got a heartier strain, who knows. I'm not giving up on my marantacara yet! My zebrina is doing well (though not as well as this guy) and its just stunning.

Not finicky? This damn plant was beautiful last summer. Brought it indoors and it had a whole tantrum! It went from full and lush to skeletal. I was devastated! She still alive and beginning to produce really small new growth. Humidity is when it decided to throw a fit. I'm praying that I can get her back to her full self.

Thanks for this video! Love prayer plants but they can be sooo finicky.
I have a Ctenanthe amagris and I noticed recently that new leaves are a bit brighter than usual (almost lime colored) green, and not the usual medium dark green. I can't figure out if the plant is getting too much sunlight or not enough. Right now, I have it about 10 feet from a north facing window. Any recommendations?? Thanks!

Could anyone tell me if water from my fish tank would be good for my prayer plant given it’s been treated with tap water conditioner? Or if the fish waste in the water would be too much for it could I simply treat the water with tap water conidtioner that removes chlorine and such as well as heavy metals? I recently bought a red maranta and want it to like me😅😂

Suddenly the leaves were curling up even though I sprayed, kept it from direct sunlight, used distilled water etc. So I divided the plant, put them all in glasses of water and they recovered. As soon as I put them back in (moist) soil, the curling began again. What’s wrong?
