    Thank you some much for these videos! I bought a Calathea white star recently. In the shop they said that it is a very easy care plant. Then I searched the internet, and basically EVERYONE threatened me that this plant is the worst for beginners, and in general very hard to maintenance. Thanks to your video (and other videos as well) I am much calmer now - because I actually have something to start with. No other channel in RUclips was so informative! Now I know that I have a good chance to take care after my Calathea even though I'm only at the beginning of my plant parenting journey

    I got one of these moisture meters and I love it. Not only for my calathea but also because it has taught me how very differently my plants water needs are depending on their pot, what the pot is made of, etc. I've always been one to have "water day" since I've mostly been an outdoor gardener but indoor plants are very different.

    I’ve had mine for a year, brown spots are just normal, if it’s thirsty it will curl inward. The ones that are purple on the underside are chatoyant on the top, you can dust them to help shine . Here in oregon they’re not too common at retailers . I paid $17 for anice big healthy and it’s booming in winter it gets pretty cold, and gets up to 75-80 F in summer; but it does fine in both extremes

    • @irairod5160
      @irairod5160 Год назад +2

      Oh, no, be careful! Calatheas (and Alocasias) need AIR humidity, but get sick when there's moisture on the leaves too often or too long. You can very easily kill your rattlesnake by misting it and making it vulnerable to fungus-bacteria-rot-gnats. A very large pebble tray would be a preferable measure, as would be bringing your Calathea to the bathroom when you take a shower and leaving it there for a couple of hours afterward. Another thing you could try--if a proper humidifier is out of the question--is raising the thermostat by a few degrees since warmer air holds better to humidity. Even a tabletop fountain or an electronic mister (the kind sold for essential oils) placed nearby would be better than wetting the leaves.

    • @CampingforCool41

      @@irairod5160 believe me I don’t have to worry about fungus because it’s winter here and the air is dry as a bone due to heaters running. After watching your video I have moved it to a space 4 metres away from the window, with a saucer with water underneath it. On a side note and NOT pertinent to Calathea's, some houseplants grow year-round (Philodendron Birkin) for ex, with that being said, if they're still growing, the plant will absolutely benefit from fertilizer in the winter months. All depends on the plant of course. Some plants go into dormancy stage obviously.

    So far we’re going on 3 months and we’re still alive. We are situated in the bathroom and using distilled water. It’s winter so mostly overcast days. Fingers crossed, fingers crossed, fingers crossed!!!

    My calathea has stickiness on the underside of the leaves. I don’t see anything but could it be mites?

    I have a fairly dark house and only have sun for a while in the afternoon. Should I provide a grow light and if so how long?

      Grow lights are good. I'd have it on for between 10 and 16 hours max. Choice is yours really
