Yes, such schemes continue taking place. The government is cracking down on it, but unfortunately there are lots of scammers and even lawyers engaging in false asylum claims. Most people do not understand that, even if they get asylum through a fake case, once their attorney/paralegal gets caught (and eventually they will), all of the asylum cases they touched will be reopened and reconsidered. We often get clients who had some fraudster lawyer or paralegal get their asylum case approved many years ago (sometimes over a decade ago) and now they get placed in deportation proceedings many years after.

You apply for a work permit 150 days after your asylum application was filed. Make sure to not file earlier.
