Rivers is so underrated. This song and many others not only capture moments in time, but capture the feel and emotions connected with his music and the currents of the times.
Why doesn’t someone with authority do something about Johnny Rivers to get him included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame . Poor Side of Town alone make him eligible for that legacy.
Lynn Templeton Absolutely along with The Association , and Tommy James and The Shondells. So many omissions it’s ridiculous. Johnnys voice is unmistakable and I’ve never heard it imitated.
This was the year my baby sister Daphne was born, January 1966, she was my best friend, and we both loved America Bandstand , classics. She would have loved this station. RIHeaven baby sister.🌹🌹♥️♥️😇😇 3/7/2016
Here's a big hug for ya, Valerie. 🧡🧡🧡🧡 I'm the middle of 7 kids and our youngest was taken from us when he was 21. I spent last night listening to his favorite music (Beck, Cranberries, Smashing Pumpkins, Alice In Chains) and bawling my eyes out. Time heals wounds but sometimes it feels like just yesterday he was here... Nicholas Uriah Mears, “Nick”, 07/27/77 - 01/23/99
That was a good song! The music back then was very decent and teenagers were well dressed and we'll groomed! Our elders would be proud of our generation!
That was a very famous song! It was a big No. 1 hit the teenagers were very well groomed and you could tell if they were young men or young women unlike today's generation!
I ended up on the poor side of town and yes been married 46 years and yes she is the best thing that ever happened to me. She stood by me all the way and this song makes me emotional.I found a very nice thing on the poor side of town and I thank God .
The year I graduated from High school. What great songs and singers we had back then. No blue, or green hair, No tattoos , good looking girls, that were proud to be girls, or young ladies if you prefer. No flames shooting up to the ceiling. The kind of girls you could take home to meet your family, and they wouldn't ask what dock the woman worked on. Sure glad I got to experience the good years of music in this country.
Brings me back to high school ,dancing to great music at sock hops, mini skirts, long hair, trading beatle cards, boys carrying your books to school and of course, getting on the phone before our parents got back from work. Nothing to buy because we didn’t have the money to buy it with, except my small allowance which I saved to get me a Betty & Veronica comic book & some 1 penny chicklet gum. ❤️
Such a rich and beautiful song...ohhh Johnny Rivers can make me cry. This song tells a full story in a little over 3 minutes...truly wonderful memories.
WOW ! Incredible record, incredible voice, incredible backup. You would never find it today !!! This type of music is truly missed but were Thankful there are recordings to help us remember !!!
The people who like to call themselves "progressive" injected politics into everyday life, starting, mostly, in the 60s. Now, it has infected every aspect of the modern life and culture. And, politics is a nasty business, and very divisive.
When this was originally broadcast on Saturday, October 8, 1966, NBC broadcast Game 3 of the 63rd edition of baseball's World Series. The Baltimore Orioles bested the Los Angeles Dodgers 1-0 in that game. ⚾⚾⚾⚾⚾ 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂
I was only 3 but as I grew older mom and dad would tell me bring RICH isn’t everything as money doesn’t always buy happiness, we were lower middle class , never went hungry or had utilities shot off or owed money 💴 but we grew up with love , laughter , had the best road trips dad always told his daughters make sure men always treat you with respect
I love this song. Love it, love it, love it. My best guy friend was so in love with his girlfriend and then she left him for a "rich guy". Broke his heart in a million pieces. This song always reminded me of him.

I would be interested what happened to some of the couples . I was of a similar age and so many life changing things have happened since then , like kids, grand kids, careers , everything that life throws at us . I am a huge fan of music & how it can calm me down. One couple really caught my attention. I wonder if they stayed together or were even a couple then . I think the combination of the music and the dancing has made me think about my own experiences.

This is a great Johnny Rivers song. I believe Frank Van der Poole’s partner at 1:49 also danced on Casey Kasem’s 1960s teen dance TV show called “Shebang”. Thanks for the upload Aaron.

Bandstand was such a classy show. We could never have a show like this today. Kids don’t dance like that anymore.
This song reminds me of my daddy, on a car trip, and stopping for a burger at a hamburger stand. I was 8 or 9. Makes my heart ache.
Just yesteday, 76 now, what happened?
I get it...
👍
And my mom who passed in 2019.
To be young again and only worrying about finishing with my homework. I sure miss those days.

1966 was a great year for music! I swear that's what kept me alive!
Johnny Rivers should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Why doesn’t someone with authority do something about Johnny Rivers to get him included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame . Poor Side of Town alone make him eligible for that legacy.
That's surprising.
Yes he should.
Totally agree, but notoriously hard to work with, burned bridges etc. What you gonna do? Politics.

I was born in 1952. By 1964, I was watching Bandstand and loved it.
Such great simple times without all the violence that we now have. No baggy pants, tattoos. I would love to go back.

What a lovely song from a simpler, more innocent time. That was before my time but what a wonderful time it must have been.
Such a beautiful song.
A classic song, massively underrated
It's a real shame these days are gone, today's society is so much different.
Loved this song. One of my all time favorites…
always one of my favorite artists loved most of his songs way underrated
Marty Paich's string arrangements, and The Blossoms w/ Darlene Love's backing vocals help make this song ethereal, and one of best of the 60's.
