The Most Functional Exercise You Can Do

  • When I’m working with my students, I noticed that certain students will struggle with some of the basic movements, like laying down on the ground and getting back up.
If you or someone you know, is struggling with movements, like this, then the best exercises for you to do is simply to repeat, laying down onto the ground and getting back up. if you repeatedly do this exercise, you will get better at it, and this would improve the quality of your life dramatically.
Don’t worry about all the other fancy things that somebody asked you to do and just do the most basic things because these are the basic functional movements that you need to do to increase your quality of life. via @mikechangofficial

Thanks Mike for doing this video. It's very practical. I also tell people to not use a chair to get up from it but to use your own legs to get up from a chair. Also when you get out of your car do not use the door or grab anything to get our of your car. When you do this you depend on things and you will lose leg strength. Just turn your body to the left and use your legs to get out of a car. In this manner you keep your legs strong.

That is something at 71 easy for me, but walking flares up my arthritis. I also figured out that keeping my abdominals engaged makes everything easier and w/o pain. I spend a lot of time on the floor and in the garden , so I can crouch comfortably and can get up w/o using my hands. Yoga for 47 years helps.

I was so excited you were going to tell me a simple exercise so I could get up and down without needing a chair or dresser or person to help me up. So your advice is I do what I can’t do every day as an exercise. Why don’t you fly over the rooftops every day while you are giving useless advice. I met an 85 year old woman doing tree pose in a field. I said I wish I had your balance. And she said try to do this every day and you will improve and she was right. But you say do this every day and your inability to do this will go away. Well I spend part of most days on the floor and thank god for furniture. Because your advice is ludicrous. I hate that every RUclips video has the answers to my life problems and the answer is always “don’t be 65 and overweight”. Oops, screwed that up. My bad.
