    Love that mindset, and totally agree!

      that's perfectly right,but if you earn nothing,you'll have to work as something else.so,as you see it's still important

    I definitely agree with her on most points, but I think its a little unfair to say money shouldn't be your motivation, because the truth is if you're not making enough money to support yourself with your art, then you cant make art because you'll be spending all your time waitressing or whatever.
    That being said I think what she probably meant was don't expect to be making A LOT of money. Personally I'd be totally happy if I could just do art and make enough to buy food and pay off student loans, haha. My motivation isn't to be making enough for me to buy like a mansion or whatever. But regardless, money is definitely a motivation, even if its just enough to pay the bills.

      Sorry,that's figurative EXPRESSIONISM that Van Gogh invented NOT figurative impressionism.

    Thank you! I am a life long artist. I have sold and also disgned logos. I have never created my own online business or have been consistent with creating more pieces. My are is beading, designing, drawing (charcoal and pastels) and painting. I am currently pursing my art degree. I have never used oils and my paint teacher challenged me to use oils. I found your page and you have been inspiring me. I have fallen in love with oils and the possibilities with the mediums. Have a good day!

    I'm not gonna lie... this video made me slightly emotional. All my life, I have answered the "what do you wanna be when you grow up" question with "I wanna be an artist". I never actually believed it would happen, to be honest. Thankfully I discovered RUclips and enjoyed watching people do art on RUclips. I tried it with my channel and I love it. I've been using my channel for art for about 5 years. I don't even make enough money with my art to support myself. I haven't made any money (yet, hehe) off my RUclips but I still do it all because it makes me extremely happy! Thankfully I have a wonderful family who supports my decision to pursue art. You inspire me, Lena! So thank you! :-)

    I wish I had the courage :( If money wasn't a problem I would ditch everything and just dedicate most of my time to art. But the thought of not having a good amount of money makes me nervous.

    • @SarahMariLucas
      @SarahMariLucas 8 лет назад +41

      +iashrai I was once in your shoes. I didn't want to leave my dead end job (where I was being harassed every day) just because it paid well. Until I realized I was wasting this one life that I had busting my butt for someone who didn't appreciate me, when I could be using my time to make myself better and investing in myself. Short story - I quit my job about a year ago and I now make money on the side doing what I love - it's not alot, but I'm happier and that's all that matters. The important thing to know, is that everything is possible in this world. The great thing about us human beings is that being positive does remarkable things and when you're doing what you love, happiness and everything else comes with it - you just have to believe, be patient and be determined. I didn't have much money when I quit my job but I told myself that my happiness was much more important and that's what kept me going strong. Think about it - really think about it - and make the right decision - you only have one life so make the most of it.

    There are good points here! I respectfully disagree with some of them though. In my opinion, you shouldn't devalue your art, your time or yourself because you might seem "money hungry." You have to make a living. It shouldn't be your only motivation but you can't expect to support yourself if you practically give away your art and don't focus at all on making money. Thay said I get where she is coming from on a lot of points. Well done!

    I grew up in a small area (and I still live there). After graduation it was really hard for me to find a job. And if I had a job I always felt the pressure on my shoulders. But I've discovered that when I'm doing something creative I feel so relaxed and your video inspired me to share my stuff online. Thanx for the tips and inspiration, Greetings from The Netherlands

    Awesome video! I feel it's a very positive way to go about creating art. I am also an artist from a reservation. The thing I noticed is whenever money becomes my motive I feel like my creativity gets blocked. All of a sudden, I lose motivation and that's when it seems to be a burden. So what helps me is, doing it for the love of art and being able to share my experiences through my art and truly expressing myself! Great work!

  • @LarryWilliamsArtist

    I agree with the sentiment here 100 percent. If money is your primary driving goal with your art I think your in the wrong business. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to make a living, but a friend of mine once told me in regards to this topic; Do what you love and the money will follow- I tend to agree. And if not, your still doing what you love.

    Lena Dana you have no idea how much of an inspiration you are to me, I only discovered your Art on RUclips 3 months ago and I love your paintings so much! I've watched almost all of your videos and with each one I watch I'm inspired more and more. I'm currently a bartender also ( bartending for 5 yrs now and I know exactly what you mean when you say it's exhausting), tho I do appreciate my customers I've grown close too. I recently got in a motorcycle accident with my boyfriend which was life changing for the both of us, we both were injured pretty bad. Now I'm having to heal my ankle after breaking my talus bone, so I've had a bunch of time on my hands not being able to walk. Growing up all I wanted to do was draw and paint, and constantly I've been put down for wanting to make it a career. No one really supported it, saying I'd never make enough money or I'd have to be alot better at it. I've went to school 3 different times... never finishing, because it wasn't what made me happy. I stopped making Art for a few years, convinced I was just wasting my time. Watching your videos opened my eyes to realizing that life is short, and you should do what you love! That's what I love and that's what makes me happy. A month ago I started painting and drawing again and I plan on continuing to do just that, no matter what anyone has to say. If I end up making a career out of it, it'd be a dream come true! This comment is a bit long but I really just wanted to let you know that you're very talented and to keep up the great work, continue to inspire people and continue to be your genuine self! Thanks Dana!

    Lena thanks for the inspiration!! I'm a full time RN in an emergency department of the only trauma center in my county. I love nursing but it's stressful and exhausting. Thank you for helping me believe that through hard work and passion I can do this!!

    I really like your attitude. You are incredibly talented and I love your videos. I am a performing artist, and I used to do work real cheap, but it came to a point where I was working so hard I was actually losing money. The thing I loved so much was actually killing me financially. So I took a big step back and looked at what it cost me to do an event and how much I needed to make to not only break even, but also make a living. When I raised my rates to a decent level to live off, yes I lost some business, but I regained my passion for what I do and it gave me a big boost for my self-image to see that people were actually willing to pay MUCH more than I was originally charging. My point is, you should raise your prices to a level you can live off of. Then you can forget all the little jobs and long grueling hours to pay the rent and do more of what you really love. You owe it to yourself! Your fans will gladly pay it because you are worth it!!

    I loved this video! You had me saying "YES" throughout it haha :) I had to drop out of college because it got too expensive,and I fell into a not-so-motivated phase. On the bright side, I've noticed that this time has served to open my eyes even more--you really start to observe things deeper when they don't go according to plan. I was studying film, not because I wanted to be the next Oscar/Emmy winner,but because I wanted to give a truly alternative view that I felt most media didn't(still doesn't) give. The press misinforms, Hollywood sometimes acts as political/stereotypical bait, and the media ignores legitimate problems here or serves to dehumanize others(disgusting). Some times looking at media & difficult circumstances can be both inspiring and uninspiring...artistic contradiction Lol Nice to see people who see art in a not so artificial way! And the survey thing? Don't we all 😄🙌

I'm an artist I come from a family of them and I wasn't doing art for a long time because I just wasn't and I was working and doing other things that didn't make me happy. I got motivated to go back to art because it's who I am it's something that is in my blood and I want to take care of that gift. I guess now since everyone is making money on their art or trying to I feel like there's expectation that what I love will bring in money. I'll be happy with a few dollars for more art supplies. Even though I (only) sold 2 prints on deviantart, I never felt like selling any pieces (at least not yet, even though I would appreciate some money). Instead I paint for my friends for FREE :D YAY I love making art for my friends. It feels like I can't communicate in high school but making art for others feels like connecting my soul to theirs.

    Giclee is actually a pigment based ink rather than a dye based ink. That's why it lasts so long; the ink will probably last longer than the paper!

    You are a true inspiration. I am currently doing online school and i LoVe art. My dream is to incorporate painting and drawing in leather and make clothing, jewelry with a mix of metal. I have a vision i just don't know how to start. I am currently trying to find a job in art but it is so hard. Most of them require a degree. Thanks a lot.

    You inspire me :')
    I'm applying to colleges now and seriously torn on whether or not I should major in art. I want to do something with my life with art but I also don't want to struggle with financial issues in the future so I'm just really really indecisive. Did you major in art? And how do you think of more things to draw?

    • @LenaDanya
      @LenaDanya  9 лет назад +3

      I didn't major in art, my major was undecided and I didn't take painting classes or anything, I just took the required academic prerequisites and some electives. I dropped out after a year :D
      i just make art based on what's interesting to me and fun to create, once you figure that out it's easier to make a body of work centered around it

    • @lIllIlIllIlIlI

      Lena Danya Thanks for your advice! I also have another question - was there a reason why you didn't choose to major in art? Like were you going to and something stopped you? Thanks

    • @LenaDanya
      @LenaDanya  9 лет назад +9

      the school I went to didn't offer the art program I wanted to do. And the ones that did would cost me 100,000+ dollars. I was under the impression I would need it- but then I discovered a bunch of artists that taught themselves and made it into a career and did really well without the schooling.

    I'm currently a senior in high school and all I ever want to do is draw and create art and try new ways of creating art and I would be happy doing that for the rest of my life but I also know I have to go to college I just don't think there's anything else I would do besides making art. Plenty of people and friends want me to make them something or buy one of my pieces I just don't know the best way to go about it and possibly make a "career" out of that.

    Great video, Lena! Really inspiring and heartfelt, specially what you said about doing art and RUclips videos for the sake of art itself, and also that you stopped pouring alcohol for your art because it makes you enjoy yourself. I used to sell my artwork on Ebay and other internet sites, but I guess I just take too much pride on my work to sell it that cheap, or I don't know how to do internet commerce like you do (my plan is that I want to wait until I have the money to open my own small gallery or showroom, or however they're called).
    But one good thing I have from my art and also my writing (I write professionally as well) is that now I post it everywhere for people to see, and that led me to meet people in the entertainment industry and discuss my two art forms. So thanks to showing my art without shame or inhibitions, I became a professional writer and now I am about to make my first movie, 'Michael Vega: Loose Damned".
    Point is that you are so right when you say that money is just a tool and that there are ways to find passion or enjoyment just for the sake of one's art, and the internet is a perfect place to find those ways to thrive; you never know where your art is going to take you, and that is the exciting part to me. So I think we should all believe in ourselves and ignore our inhibitions, show our talents to the world, because we never know what lies ahead.

      +asa rodriguez beautifully said!!! I honestly wish more people tuned into their creativity, it sparks the most profound creations that not many recognize. Even schools don't focus so much on being creative, it's all done by the books. If all of us focused more on doing what we loved, this world would be a fulfilling and happier place, indeed.

    • @asarodriguez2899
      @asarodriguez2899 8 лет назад +1

      +Artsy Sarah Absolutely. I see art as keeping a diary where you let your real self be free and release all frustration and buried emotions, where you can gain understanding of life at another level and accept more your own situations and the situations of other human beings. And yes, school most definitely focus on book learning and stifle the real core-essence of artistry and all creativity, which is not just problem-solving but problem-creating, because I really believe that if problem-creating were to be the main focus of attention in schools, then, kids would really learn to be more mentally agile in meeting problems in their real life as grown-ups later on, and also find more easily the answers to those problems; and thus the world would be better, and so art would flourish, and beauty would flourish instead of war and famine.

    Love your art!
    You could definitely ask more for your originals. Your price for prints is good, but you could make a lot more copies of the prints. Even unlimited prints, so all of the prints you have made would be available for new customers to get.
