"I don't believe in policing other people's [art] methods". Thank you so much for saying that, Lena! Some people can get really rude with that, in my experience.

Even the painting instructors that I'm with are like this. Can they not just treat a method as a preference without trashing another one? Makes me nuts!

You could also just use the whole frame & not take the glass out. That way you've got a ready-made palette and don't have to be bothered with taping the glass edges.

riteasrain i always use frames as palettes they’re so awesome 😊 I remember my painting professor in community college suggested getting a custom glass and taping the edges and I was confused at all that process until I saw a girl using a frame and he was shocked when he saw majority of us using frames of any size

You've got my vote for a paint thinner horror story. I imagine that it gave you the power to clean your brushes using only your fingertips.
I think your wisdom on art can be applied to life in general. The dirt cheap stuff you can buy at walmart doesn't do its job right and ultimately costs more because it runs out/breaks faster. Wisdom? More like expertise.

I've been painting on and off for several years. To save money, I cut and gesso my own panels -- if you buy pre-made panels, they are a lot more expensive than what you can make yourself. Another thing I've used for many paintings is a limited palette - especially a modified earth tone palette: Ultramarine Blue (blue), Burnt Sienna (red) and Yellow Ochre (yellow) plus white. Using a limited palette allows for more overall harmony in the painting plus all of these colors are typically "Series I" colors, so they're less expensive. I also buy the big 150 ML tubes when they're on sale during predictable times of the year: back to school and Christmas. You can always buy empty 37 ML tubes and fill those if you need a smaller size. Overall price per volume is generally less when you buy the larger tubes.

i really appreciate these videos! i am picking up my first oil paints tomorrow! very excited! what would be super helpful is showing you as you paint, how often you dip and mix, how much gamsol you use. i know you cant show a full painting but maybe a few minutes.
    thank you so much!

For the glass palette, go to Home Depot or Lowes and look in the glass section. Usually you can find some smaller pieces of shatter-proof glass that are made to replace the easily breakable picture glass. You should still use duct tape to cover the harsh edge, but that glass is still less than $5 but you can be secure knowing that if you drop it for some reason it won't shatter into a million pieces and be impossible to pick up.

    • @903lightning
      @903lightning 8 лет назад +1

Also: Blick's prices can be incredibly inflated, so watch out. My favorite place is Art Supply Warehouse. You can order online or go in person, but you can usually find some amazing deals.

I hacked glass from old stereo cabinets & coffee tables, some already have either a wood or mdf frame on at least two edges (if you call that a frame) the edges are all smooth, just thought you might appreciate that...dumpster diving is fun in college towns especially! I used to find canvases & even an old easel!
This was 20 years ago already! WOW time flies!

Lena, I've got a palette tip for you. Ask your friends or go yard 'sailin', find a old microwave or oven, unscrew the door parts and pull out the glass! It happens to be 'safety glass', its around 1/4" thick and smooth on the edges! They're easy to come by and a whole lot cheaper and safer! Some washing machines have the safety glass also! p.s., If I was 60 years younger...yada yada ya

I use mdf gesso a few coats on both sides, very inexpensive,in the US there is a cleaning product called Murphy's oil soap great for cleaning brushes, another way i use canola oil ,wipe the paint off the brush then rub it into the oil until all most the paint is off ,wash with masters brush cleaner or Murphys oil soap.tfs

I know this video is older but still great! People need to shop around for good deals and don't be impatient. When I was first starting out with Watercolor I would go to Michaels and use the 40% coupon on 1 pad of Arches paper and leave. water cups were glass jars I found at dollar store. I bought 1-2 tubes of Sennelier or Daniel Smith online when I could afford it. In between I practiced just drawing and sketching. I have been doing art for 15 years and doing things this way has saved me so much $$$$. It also spared me the agony of buying generic products so overfilled with fillers and binders you can't get the results you want.

I love using the square glass cutting boards from dollar tree as my mixing palette, the cutting board is much thicker than the picture frames, so you don't have to worry about them breaking on you when you're scraping the paint off. Also, the dollar tree has the exact same scraper she was using on the video. Again Dollar tree recently started to sell larger canvas panels and canvases that are fabulous to work with. The blue paintbrushes with the golden metal parts that come 3 to a pack are magnificent to work with, those brushes work great with watercolors, acrylics, gouache, and even oil paints, and if you forget to clean them out you can dispose of them since they are so affordable. Also, you can use the cello gift wrap over your expensive mixing pallets, and cleaning up is a breast because you can just unwrap the pallet and properly dispose of the cello wrap in seconds. Dollar Tree has 6 packs of cloth towels or regular paper towels for a dollar that you can use to clean brushes! Finally, you can make your own oil paintbrush cleaning tank with a jar, stainless steel sink strainer from the dollar store, and just add your favorite paint thinner. It works great and it cost way less than a silicoil cleaning tank.

Just learned of a great tip from artist Diane Mize....use white 100 lb. card stock 8.5 x11, gesso one side dry, gesso back side so paper will not bend. Paint 2nd coat on one side for front. Lightly sand if you prefer. Best yet, use a foam roller dedicated for gesso use. Let it dry, then you are ready to go for next batch of paper. Good for studies.

Great video. I'd already discovered some of these tips, but you gave me some new ones too. I got a nice cheap piece of thick toughened glass for a pallet by going to a glazier's and asking of they had any offcuts. I made a shallow box with lid for it, so I can keep dollops of paint safely and they don't dry overnight.

The best way of cleaning brushes is to dip them in vegetable oil and then brush away the paint. Once all the colour is gone, you rinse your brushes with cold soapy water and then leave to dry. Its cheaper than using solvents and its much better for your brushes

you dont need to buy all the mediums and you can just use linseed oil and to save money on it either buy it from a hardware store or if you want better quality oil for less than art oil buy linseed oil or flax oil from health store it is cheaper than artist grade and it is good for painting (flax and linseed oil are the same)

I use a wood palette and yeah it's kinda hard to get the paint off but that's because it's pretty much a family heirloom so it's old as dirt that's why I use it.
A good tip is to cover your palette with food wrap so that you have less mess to clean up and you can preserve your paint until the next time you paint!
Also canvas paper is sooo good but when I was beginning I just used cheap watercolor paper or mixed media paper???? IDK what I was thinking lol but it worked
Also I like canvas boards because they are thicker that just a stretched canvas and they're double sided so I could work on two paintings at the same time!

Lena, another tip for you, before you scrape off the dried paint from your palette, spray it with a little Rubbing Alcohol (Isopropyl), it makes the paint slip right off! Also, at the Dollar Store they have a product called "L.A.'s Totally Awesome". Use it to soak/clean your brushes that are getting hard.

I'm very lucky I think here in Australia art materials are very reasonably priced. There's one brand called Monte Martre who do quality canvas in pads at sizes A5 to A2 with 10 sheets. The A3 ones can be bought for as little as 10 dollars in some supply stores and a brand of paints called Spectrum good quality and reasonably priced, its great.

If you are serious about your art, stop buying from australian retail stores - they are the most expensive in the world. Go to www.jacksonsart.com/ and purchase all you need for less - compare the prices. Australia is a regular daily destination for english airlines (we are still their colony)and postage is much cheaper than here in Oz believed or not.
For example: Top Quality oil paint Old Holland
      - Senior Art (Melbourne) - A1 TITANIUM WHITE OLD HOLLAND 40ML = $$17.96 with 10% off.
      - Jackson's (UK) - A1 TITANIUM WHITE OLD HOLLAND 40ML = $11.99

Thank you very much for your advice, I am a comic artist but I am considering to experiment with oil painting. Your video was very helpful for me. I painted a batman on oil (Lol) long time ago and it didn't look so bad hahaha... so... One thing that I would like to know is the "commercial" aspect of the painting business. I see that you have a great website setup. That's one of my goals, to make a shop to sell my art directly to the people. I am also considering other ways, like going to a gallery or something like that but I have no idea how to do it. But first, I have to learn to paint well hahaha... so your video was helpful indeed. Thanks! (Edit: I just saw your video on Ted Talks and it is really awesome. That's what I was looking for. Thanks! )

Another good surface to paint on is any paper with a layer of PVA glue on it(the type of glue kids use in school cos its non-toxic, and it doesnt matter if they end up with it in their mouths...). Stretch the paper like watercolour painters do if its thin. Especially useful if you're only painting it to take a print from, rather than selling it, although I've sold a few like that and they're still fine! A lot of professional artists prime panels with emulsion paint; cheaper than gesso. I've recently tried painting on old bed sheets stretched over fibreboard panels, that works well too, and costs pretty much nothing!

I really appreciate what you're doing, you inspire me to expand the artistry within me to the world of painting. As a beginner in the subject it can be very intimidating with all the equipment and materials. So thanks a lot for your advice!
I'll probably start by painting with spatulas because it seems simple.
So I wish for you to do a spatula video sometime if you find the interest (:

I wanna start whit oil paint. I have bought the oil set of Pebeo. Its a frence budget oil paint brand. The oil paint set comes in 20 ml tube in 30 colours for 38,36. You get all the colours. I also bought there acrylic paint set cause i paint allot whit acrylic,s too. I wanna paint solvence-free so i also bought the solvence-free gel from Gamblin. I can not get gamsol from gamblin. I got a gray tear off pallet. 50 sheets for 28,00 euro,s online on amazone. Not even online at amazone and i can,t handle the smell of terpentine so that why i wanna paint solvence-free also. Thank you so mutch for this video. Its super helpfull Lena Danya😊🖐🏾👋🏾👍🏾

I started out learning about oil colors from Daria Callie's RUclips channel, and I, instead of getting a set, bought 5 individual colors of Gamblin 1980 oil paint (Napthol Red, Hansa Yellow Light, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Umber, and Titanium White). Do you think this is enough for an absolute beginner to oil painting? I'm used to digital art and using Copic Markers for less realistic artworks, where I have more colors to work with, but I can't mix those colors well. I'm hoping I can work with these, but as a beginner to painting in general and being used to higher quality supplies (lmao spoiled, spoiled me, spending most of my money as a minor without a job, on art supplies). It's certainly going to be interesting!

Hi. I am sure that I didn’t “invent” this tip, but it’s still a money saving thing that I do.
MICHAEL’S have a 40% coupon everyday (sometimes more than that) but it’s usually for just one item, at least here in sunny central Florida. But you want two things or more so... what to do? Well, it’s kind of a chore, but I go online, buy one item using their “pay online, pick in store” option, using the discount at checkout. Then, after I pay I put another one in the cart, and pay using that same discount code again because while you are only allowed to use it on one item at the store, I realized that online no one is policing that, as long as you don’t put two things in the cart at once. Then you wait until you get an email message (one for every item) telling you that your order is ready to pick up, and you go and get them. Sure, it will be kinda awkward to tell the employee that you are there to pick up 4 different orders (and sign for each one) but I cannot care less about that.
Option 2 is bringing a friend to the store, give him/her the money and have him/her pay for your item. Option three is my least favorite, which is going out of the store after buying one thing, leave it in the car and go back to get another. I would do that only if I. am in a hurry for whatever I need.
Unless they specify that shipping is free, do not buy online and have your order shipped home; their shipping rates are insulting.
Thanks Lena for such a wonderful channel, I am about to go into oil painting and you had been instrumental on that process. Very well made and produced, a real pleasure to watch.

Glass from the dollar tree is a great idea. You could just leave the glass in the frame though. :)

For the pallette, you can just keep the frame with the glass, you don't have to tape the edges and it would be more sturdy too..

Greetings, Lena. Thanks for the wonderful art videos!
I am an artist from the Philippines. Here Gamblin's 1980 series seems to be on the pricey side of student grade paints, even more expensive than the artist grade paints of other brands! There are a number of more affordable brands like Grumbacher (Academy), Winsor & Newton (Winton), Lefranc & Bourgeois (Louvre), Sonnet, and Pebeo that also seem to be good or at least enough to get the job done.
Good oil paints in my country are more expensive and less abundant than in the US. Many artists and art students here use cheap China-made brands like Marie's, Magi-Wap, and the affordable variant of Royal Talens yet they still produce good works of art.
With your influence, I know you can get a lot of people into oil painting. I am just concerned that some of them may not be able to afford the paints that you are using and end up buying cheaper paints and get different or even frustrating results. For this reason I would like to suggest the following:
    1. Use cheaper paints, mediums, and brushes in one of your videos
    2. Create an oil paint shootout video that may help people understand the differences among brands or between student and artist grade paints
These are just my two cents. Thank you very much, more power, and God bless!

So last Friday, I got together with a couple other colleagues and my wife and we went to our city park to paint. We all hit up Michael's at our own time before our scheduled get together time. I was messaged by one colleague for gesso, and I'm all crap I left the house already but headed to Michael's I'll see what they have. Long story short, I got two tubes of paint and a fifteen dollar bottle of gesso and an adult coloring book for my wife all for 12 buck after online coupons and in store 50% of artist's loft paint for the two bottles (1.99ea.) So yeah, they're crazy about deals.

Is it possible to speed up the drying process with a blow dryer/heat tool? I would like to have the paint at least semi-dry before putting more layers especially with the skin. Also I love your oil paint information videos they have given me so much help to where to start!

Cheap oil paint is made from marble dust and colored dye and a medium is added, like linseed oil. Real oil is made from different colored mineral pigments. like iron oxide, etc. and linseed oil.
