    I'm feeling a bit jealous. I took an oil painting class 8 years ago and been practicing on and off since. I've spent hundreds of hours of researching and watching other videos. This video summarized everything I've covered and MORE in just 10 min. I heavily was researching nontoxic options for paint thinner since i have asthma. I asked the professor, classmates, other artists, the internet. No luck. I resorted to only using linseed oil. But then this guy just gives me the answer... like nothing. Wtf. This is gold.

      Oh me too! And the drama sometimes! The highs the lows the frustration……. Ha ha. It finally dawned on me lately. Art is like an endeavor such as cooking a great meal or growing some great veggies…..at first you use a cook book……later other dynamics come to the front. A ton if people figure it out. Its not really such a big deal after all. The hyoe and media is what dies that. Example. Im not fond of Picasso…"but according to the powers” hes multi million dollar stuff. Perspective. In some periods artists were in the same catagory as entertainers ….paid low and lower class

    I'm a graphic designer, I went to art school in the late 90's early 2000's. I had an 11 week color theory class. We use gouache and the only colors we were allowed to use were magenta, pthalo blue, yellow and black (we could only use the black for mixing grayscale values). I probably painted and cut out over 500 1 inch by 1 inch color swatches over that time. At the time I hated every minute of it. But by the end of that 11 weeks I could create any color possible with just 3 tubes of paint without even thinking about it. It was one of the most valuable classes I've ever taken in regards to my art career. There are a lot of skills to learn to be a good painter, being able to mix colors, understand tints, etc. is a must.

    • @Eternallytiredpigeon
      @Eternallytiredpigeon Год назад +3

      I remember when I was transitioning from pastels to watercolour my teacher only allowed us to use lemon yellow, paynes grey, ultramarine blue and vermillion hue. That was all. For months she'd ask us to paint only using those. I hated it then and cursed her out in my head. Now I know just how good that exercise was for me. I have a lot more colours now but I could mix any colour with the basic ones and that's a really useful skill to have. Colour theory saves lives people.

      @@Bread_Bug There are two tiers of W&N
      oil paints.
      They produce a student quality range, which are cheaper and are called 'Winton Oil Colour' and a more expensive version, which are called 'Artist's Oil Colour.
      The artist version are pretty high end, but despite being cheaper the winton range are very fine paints too.
      I've been painting with both types for years, the main difference is the cheaper winton versions tend to be thicker and less runny, and they dry a little faster too. The artist quality range tend to be a little 'stronger' in that it takes more white to lighten them for tints.
      I know of a couple of very successful professional artists who use winton paints all the time, so be proud of your paints, whatever level! 😊

      Because he is giving inaccurate and outdated information. The colour recommendation is really wrong, try mixing a bright purple with red and ultramarine blue - it’s not going to happen. You need a Cyan type Blue or a Turquoise plus Magenta/Permanent Rose/QuinRose. Try with his colours and then try with my suggestion and see for yourself. Really good colour mixing videos have been made by Scott Naismith and Katie Jobling. Hope this helps! 🖖🏻

    Oh my god. The fact that you even thought to bring to light the victory it is in itself to sit down and create something in general is so cool and I've got so much respect for that!
    I just sat down with a beginner oil painting setup (you know the one, it also has colored pencils underneath it, the one that can absolutely never shut completely once opened and everyone leaves the paints alone due to the intimidation and fear of failure... yeah, that one!) and I'm about to use the provided array of tools that imply "good enough". They've given me the option for fine or bold strokes, very long and seemingly comprised of a choice of about three horse hairs or 5 (depending on your masterpiece) that have been sloppily fastened atop a toothpick and pretty much bound together with some tape and a hopeful heart. While I was investigating my new frontier and inspecting each tool both the small and larger paint brushes all but crumbled to dust in my hands so I already feel like I'm starting from the bottom of the talent spectrum with only upward possibilities. Brushes definitely not worthy of canvas so I am substituting sketch pad paper. Anyways.... This was an extremely informative beginners crash course and I am glad that I took the time to learn a little before diving in. All I wanted was to know some basics for painting with these untouched oil paints that are lying around and I ended up walking away feeling such a sense of pride and a full cup 👌💜

    How can you be so amazingly knowledgeable and able to explain really tricky things in a simple easy to understand way - and yet so young and cute and with a too-cool-for-school backwards hat. I’ve been craving going back to using oils and you have really given me back my confidence. Great job. Subscribed!

    I have always wanted to use oil paints and I have recently received my first set. When I had talk about oil painting my teachers and other students told me that they were super difficult to use and that I wouldn’t like them because they know I mainly used acrylic and alcohol markers. My family and partner on the other hand knows that I want to use every and all types of art ranging from clay, wood, metal, and all types of paint. I won’t lie but I was still scared to use oil paints until I found this channel. I feel a bit more confident now and am really excited to get started!! :)

    Hi Chris - I learned how to paint in college but needed a refresher to restart ... This matches exactly what I learned in school and was really straightforward, easy to follow. Thanks so much for making this reentry easy :-) My little tip is that I use soap savers when I wash brushes - they're not too harsh on the brush and gives a little texture to take out the paint.

    Another great video, Chris! Lots of info in a short, concise lesson. I’ve been painting for a couple of years and still learned things. I’m still a bit confused why straight paint would go over the top of paint + linseed oil. Wouldn’t the latter be fatter (pun by accident 😛)? Cheers!

      I get this question a lot and straight paint is the fastest. I think people associate oil with fat bc of food and get confused hahah

    I need your help Please! Today I went to the new art store and I accidentally bought Windsor and Newton Artisan
    Water oil paint. I didn’t know that they even existed . So the colours I have are (half real oil paint,) and ( half Windsor and Newton Artisan water oils ) . The water oils can be cleaned with water,but can I paint one section with that,and use the other oil paint on the same canvas? I’m doing a seascape. I’ve done the sky already.
    I’m also used to Gamblin gel which is an amazing medium but they don’t sell it . I have both Gamblin and linseed oil. Or should I keep the two oil paints separate because one is cleaned with water . The store could not elaborate on this because I actually thought I was buying real oils . What do you think ?
    Should I do layer of gesso on cheap canvas, or just use burnt sienna.
    I have the colours you mentioned in regular oils but the colours I really wanted for the sea are the water oils artisan. 🤷‍♀️ . Thanks so much ! ❤️🇨🇦

      @saarapollonen8138 3 года назад

      @@melsmaybe7014 oh if you asked me, I'm old school and use turpentine. It's very smelly & cheap but it works! But you have to remember keep ventilation on or paint outside if you use that. My friend uses lindseed oil, perhaps you should try that first. But it's very flammable so beware.

    HI, Paint coach, I am a "hobby painter" but have a fair amount of experience, have sold some paintings, illustrated a couple of books, etc. Now and then I like to watch a painting video just to see how some people communicate their art. I truly appreciate how direct and well-organized the information is. I noticed on another video your recommendation of Andrew Loomis' books (which I also love). Another great resource is the Famous Artists' series which was originally sold as a correspondence art course in three large 3-ringed binders. I inherited this from my grandmother (after she died) and it is similar to Andrew Loomis' approach. The "old-fashioned approach" still works best. Check it out online, you can still buy used copies.
    I will happily recommend your videos to anyone who wants to learn to paint well. These videos give a solid foundation in the most clear and concise manner I have yet seen. Kudos to this series.
