3 Oil Painting Mediums and How to Use Them

- Have you ever wanted to start oil painting? There are a TON of supplies to choose from. This video will show you three of my favorite mediums to use with my oil paints. Think of the mediums as water for watercolor, except with oil paints the mediums can speed up or slow down dry time, add thickness or thin them out. I will introduce the mediums and then do a short demonstration of how to use them with oil paints. You can follow along with me or just watch and see which ones you might want to use. We are starting some oil painting tutorials! Let us know what would you like to paint with oils in the comments below and what mediums you like to use.
The mediums I go over
Terpentine (terpenoid) - this is what you clean your brushes with, it thins oils and speeds. drying time (amzn.to/39Pdskd. amzn.to/39Uxv0A )
Liquin. - thick, quickens drying time (amzn.to/3p5CBgS)
Linseed Oil - extends drying time, thins out the paint ( amzn.to/2KxcjFi )

i am new to oil painting., I got confused about those mediums....You explianed very well.. thank you so much.
Glad it was helpful!
@Clayton Juelz wtf
I WAS SO SHOCKED , I USE ONE OF THOSE FOR CLEANING MY BRUSH 😃✋
I'm completely new to oil painting. When you say fat over lean does that mean there is a order to the oils when it comes to layering the paint??
@@eliciamoreno it means that we put thinner layer at the base and keep building up the thickness of the paint ur using and based on which medium you are using, u would need to use more as u proceed (if the medium makes the pain thicker) or u would need it use less and you proceed (if the medium makes the pain thicker) [I'm also new to oil painting so feel free to rechdkc everything I said ]
I'm new at this... trying to learn to paint with oils at the age of 76. I have often wondered what the difference is between these various mediums. Thank you for a very helpful video. I plan to archive it for future reference until I get more comfortable with the process. Thanks!
💋
Good luck! It’s so wonderful to learn new things at any age😊
Goodluck!!
You actually explained this whole process faster and better in half the time of other youtubers. Thank you I have a feeling you are or were a teacher.
I taught high school art
Yes exactly.
You made it a lot easier for newbies like me to understand how these mediums work
Thank you so much for this informative video! I always was intimidated to make the “jump” from acrylic to oil painting, but this dissolves my worries. Hope you have a nice day 💜
I can’t express how grateful I am for this video!! Incredibly informative and very direct. Thanks for sharing!
I'm 77 years and 4 month old today and I've determined to start oil painting for half a years ago and still feel timid to begin! Painting is my childhood dream, but as an orphan at early age, I couldn't afford paper or pencil until my boyhood. My dear friend sponsored the materials for painting and we both didn't know exactly what we need and he bought me a few canvases, brushes, and oil-paint tubes, but not mediums are included. I even thought I must begin drawing yesterday and watched a few oil painting tutorials and found out I need more than I have to start painting- MEDIUMs!!! What a foooool I was who even think it was the same as water colour to use water as its medium.
Miss, your explanation is very lucid and enlightening and I'm going to ask my friend to send some mediums right away!! Thank you so much, sensei.
choć nie będzie on błyszczał.
hello there , as i was beginner i was strugling to , if you want to know especialy how to make you own canvas rather than buying the pre made ! let me know
EXCELENTE DEMO!! I just discovered Liquin, and love how is dries pretty fast. The fat over lean is a great tip, wish I knew this years ago! Thanks!

Amazing explanation!
This was super helpful! Thank you!
I'm so glad!
Thank you so much very helpful!
This 8 minutes equals my entire art classes in school. Thx 🙏🏾
Great advice, just one thing I'd like to add, and that is Liquin is considered a fatty medium. Your order was correct if you were to use those exact mediums, but you also wanna use a ratio it as you paint; 1:1 beginning, 2:1 middle(progressively less lean as you continue each layer) then finish with a fatty medium or the same medium you start with minus any lean solvents(this method is for liquin in particular). Hope this helps anyone who was wondering about liquin.
That is really helpful! Thank you!!
This helped so much thank you.
Very helpful!
This was very helpful
Thank you ma'am! It was so much helpful!
Most welcome!
So helpful Thankyou so much clearer to me now 😊
You’re welcome 😊
All this time I thought linseed oil helps the paint dry faster and bought it. Didn't think twice. Halfway, I realized that what I really need is turpentine. Sadly, I have to save up before I could buy one. But at the end of the video I had recognized their function and I don't regret buying linseed oil now since I could use them over lean. Thank you so much! This video greatly enlightened me!
Obraz trzeba odstawić wtedy by podsechł dlatego ja maluję kilka obrazów jednocześnie i wtedy maluję "do syta".
Thank you. Helps a tonne. A I had liquin and linseed the wrong way around
Explained very well 👍👍 thank u for sharing the video 🙂
My pleasure 😊
ive painted with oil paint for about 2 years self taught but i could never find or didnt know the orderless turps was around at least for oil painting on canvas i dont mean for house painting cause that i found and wasnt sure at the time if i could use it other then to clean the brushes lol yes you def explained it very well.. glad ive found someone who paints with both oil and watercolor very cool thank you for letting us know incase i do have a diff question. wait i am a subscriber i just havent been to your channel in awhile lol glad i saw this.
your video is so great. Your video is amazing and wonderful.
i just did my first oil painting and i used turps. i was so surprised that it dryed so fast after watching so many videos on youtube everyone mentioning that the drying time of oil paint is so slow. thanks for that that solved my problem
Wonderful and helpful, thanks so much :)
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much!
VERY HELPFUL THANKS A LOT
i loved it 😍😍😍😍
This is helpful!
The odorless turpentine has less odor than the original turpentine but it is not completely odorless, it is just not as overpowering as the original.
thanks,very informative
Brilliant 👏
very useful video, You are awesome
Great explanation!
Glad it was helpful!
Great video
Thank you for this well presented demo. It should be noted that Liquin does have a strong smell. It’s not particularly offensive but a large room with ventilation helps.
Very true Jay, ventilation is important with oils
I think im gonna pick liquin it seem very versatile and I like thick paints
I hate to admit this, but I watched 5 other videos, and this was the only one that actually made sense. Thank you for helping me finally click
Thank you so much
Thankyou! ❤️❤️
Thank you so much!!!
Very nice information and best information for me thanks ji
Thank you!
Wow , its helping me so much . Because im a new with oil painting and i have to much assignment that need used oil painting. And yeah its helping me on using linseed oil medium . Btw im from malaysia and I'll subscribe to you . Tq so much 💓✨🌹.
You are very welcome! Good luck!
This is my first time watching your vid since I saw the otter in the intro I immediately sub
To keep costs down can you use DIY white spirit just to clean your brushes and keep the more expensive Turpentine just for thinning? One of the best posts I have seen for beginners. Thank you for sharing.
Very useful
Thanks!
Great concise video! I’m curious, can you add liquin to paint that already had linseed oil added to it?
Thank you soooo much!! Gonna go pick up turpentine tomorrow and fix my oil painting!!!
Update: I FIXED IT
I’ve been looking to so many videos explaining this and they were so so long and hard to understand. You explained this so fast and SO CLEAR I understood absolutely everything. Thank you so so much.
Tysm 😀
So, I like to blend colors together to make nice sunset paintings, but I’ve never used a medium. I love the way oil paint blends together so nice, but I find I need to use a lot of paint! What would you suggest to use, so that I don’t have to use as much paint, but still get that same kind of blend? Thanks!
Thank you
Thank you, it helped a lot since I'm a beginner at oil painting, I do have one question though, is turpentine the only thing that can be used to clean the brushes or have you tried an alternative?
Thank you. Can you guide us how to make the oil paint brush washer. With cans. And yes you are coin great
Excellent video, thanks. Do you have any instructions for applying a protective layer (gloss or other) to the painting when finished?
You have to wait 6 months before applying varnish on oil paintings...it has to be completely dry before you can add the varnish
Please tell me your thoughts regarding using Galkyd instead of Liquin to speed up drying.
Ah thank you!
No problem!
Excellent explanation. I use Galkyd Lite - is that similar to LQ? And can you tell me roughly what the drying time for Linseed oil is? I am a newbie so this is all so helpful.
In my experience since I only use linseed, it dries in a day or two.
Thank you for the info. Quick question please I have been painting only with turpentine is that still fine to do ??
🙏 thank you
I noticed when you were talking about Liquin you said "there are many different brands, this is just the one I could find at my local art supply store". But actually Liquin is Trademarked and produced by Winsor & Newton so that is the only brand available. However there are other types of quick drying alkyd mediums available. I only use the Liquin and I'm not familiar with other brands of a similar product. Thank you for a great video!
Thanks for pointing that out! There is walnut oil and Galkyd, I haven’t used either of them. They are used to make the oil paint dry faster but I have heard they can give your oil paint a plastic look
Thank you very much for this video! I'm new in oil painting.
Please, tell me if that's right:
1. I can do the entire painting with liquin, more liquin for 1st layers and less liquin later on.
2. If I want a transparent glaze when the whole painting is almost done, I should use linseed oil only, so this glaze layer doesn't crack later on.
Thank you !!
1. No it is the opposite. Liquin thickens the paint so I would be careful not to use too much on the first layer. I like to use a paint thinner on the first layer. However, if the first layer is COMPLETELY dry you should be able to paint over it without a problem.
2. Canson recommends to avoid using linseed oil: it will be too liquid, making the colors run on the support. However, I have used it as a glaze and it worked well. I hope that is helpful! Good luck
@@MrOtterArtStudio Thank you very much!!
@@MrOtterArtStudio That makes sense - more liquin is fat (fat over lean rule).
Thank you ma'am
Hi..
This video was very helpful, so thank you
I had a question about which medium do you use to wash the brushes?
Turpentine or mineral spirits
Well this is such a good information. Now, I'm new to this oil painting thing. What recommendations can you give me to protect myself from intoxication?
You can use non toxic oil paint, look for the word "hue" in the paint name, also you can use non toxic mediums like lavendar oil. If you use paints that do contain toxic ingredients, wear plastic gloves, open a window to make sure you have fresh air and you should be fine.
Thank you this is very helpful,, may I ask what paper/canvas you use both for practice and for serious paintings?
I use a canvas paper for practice, it comes in a pack. For serious paintings I use canvas or a primed wood panel, really high quality canvas covered boards can be found at raymarart.com
I've been thinking of getting into oil painting without paint thinner by going the water soluble route since I'm a little bit paranoid safety wise breathing in that stuff
Buy Spike Lavender Oil for thinning. Its safe (unless ur allergic to it then it may irritate your nose). For cleaning get Murphy's Oil Soap and mix it with water. I had the same fears but using the spike oil and the murphy's has changed the game. Plus Linseed Oil is not toxic (just read the info on flamability and ull be ok)
Theres odorless paint thinners bro
hello there thanks for the video , the questions can you mix every thing together?
