Tim, thanks so much for the info. I most paint in layers and I used to use all three mediums. A couple years ago I switched to the 50%/50%. Then just pure paint for the last retouches. I wish you all the best and more for 2023.

HI Tim, this video is wonderful. I assume you can use this method with any oil, right? I've been looking into walnut oil lately. I am confused though about one thing. I've seen people saying that without the use of solvent, you add more medium (just oil) into each subsequent layer. I would think that this would be wrong?

Yes, it all looks very logical, simple and credible. But why don't you use resins like dammar or mastic, too? How are the oil layers supposed to dry through without the resins?

Hey Tim. This is a very great and simple explanation. I usually use Liquin because I don't want to deal with all of the fat over lean stuff. I do have a question though. When it comes to plein air, if I want to just use linseed oil, do I use more linseed oil in my mixtures for the block in and then for final modeling and detail, use less (since the oil paint is thicker out of the tube)?

I usually paint in four layers...I didn't realize you could do the first 2 layers using the lean mixture. Then fat....and fatter.... having moved from pastel painting to oils which I love im trying to get it right. I understand the fat over lean principal I just wasn't clear on the process ....

You can literally do 20 layers if you want, as long as you continue going fatter each time.

    Use stand oil instead

Does this mixture seperate over time?

This technique will work for painting on porcelain?

And what kind of solvent did you use for?

Question - oil paint must have enough binder in order to not later flake or peel off. So just how thin can one go on the early layers and still have plenty of binder in the paint? In other words, what's the percentage of lean mixture to oil paint?

Binder in oil paints is linseed oil already introduced to mixture, so no worries - recommended ratios of solvent to paint are up to 5 to 1 and here u have extra oil in mixture

So this quickly dry your oil paint much faster ?

    • @gagnonstudio

The lean medium (the last one I make in this video) will make the paint dry the fastest. The more oil in the mix the slower it'll dry.

I just simply dont understand. Fat over lean. So the first layer should be lean. Now everone adding a shitton of linseed oil into the solvent…😂 why would i add additional oils onto it if i need a lean layer??
