I always say back its better to over engineer than to under-engineer that way you dont have to keep going back on your work. Like you did with to mount the bolts on a template it makes life easier, nicely set out & clearly printed.. i just makes sense!
Makes sense indeed, each one of those bolts if a different length, and although there is a way to determine which goes where if they get mixed up, it's far easier to keep track in the first place aye.. and yes, the over engineering is what i love most about Harleys.
I'm so happy for you, Del, that the engine looks superb. Saves a lot of time for other things to do on this project. Looking forward to your next episode of cutting down. Günter from Nürnberg/Germany

Such style in your work. Quick question del, I haven’t been able to find answers. Does the cam case need to be taken off to remove the generator? I figured I’d ask before I rip my 1980 xlh apart.
So Glad I found your offerings! Superb! ? looking at the cam gears,I was wondering what does the gear that spins like a merry-go-round do? Do you have another term for merry-go-round? I'm looking forward to your next posting
Are going to do the chain conversion? I know that the belt doesn't required as much maintenance than a chain but the chain looks and perform much better.

Yes Joe, have a loose plan for the generic overall style, but it's a long way off yet to get involved in styling, am leaving it loose and open so I can go with the best plan as it evolves... first and foremost though, sort the engine out!
Hi Gary, no just wanted a good look at the cam lobes and the pinion drive to make sure they were still nice and fresh... happy to say they are, really impressed with this unworn engine! Have a good week and stay safe both, D&Px

your organization when taking everything apart is next level. really gives me a lot of inspiration since I am just beginning to learn how to wrench on my own bike without any mechanical background. any other tips for beginners like me?
Biggest tip i can ever pass on to anyone is Buy the 'proper genuine HD service manual', they will walk you through every service task step by step and give you a huge amount of confidence.
Arhhh!! The dart scribe makes another appearance with a another use. That is one seriously tidy engine inside. You can assume the transmission is the same. This build will be exciting to follow.

Makes sense indeed, each one of those bolts if a different length, and although there is a way to determine which goes where if they get mixed up, it's far easier to keep track in the first place aye.. and yes, the over engineering is what i love most about Harleys.
Great video Del. “Never waste your time trying to explain yourself to people who are committed to misunderstanding you.” Cheers.
Wise words of the day sir.. Thanks for that nugget.
I'm so happy for you, Del, that the engine looks superb. Saves a lot of time for other things to do on this project. Looking forward to your next episode of cutting down. Günter from Nürnberg/Germany
Thanks Günter👍 glad you're enjoying it !
Amazing how smoothly this engine is coming apart. Are you following shop manuals as well, or just years of experience?
Yes of experience mate, but I always have a manual to hand as well!
Wowzers, you’ve nearly taken the whole bike apart. Scared stuff!….im glued to the screen mate.
Ha ha, it's just nuts and bolts mate, nothing complexed !
Watching this made me nervous about firing up the ST soon. Haha not your fault, just a related topic. I suppose that nervous feeling probably never goes away though. Thanks as always.
It never doses Sir, and I hope it never will as it makes you check things 5 times and prevents those little disasters!
Del, you are so organised. Thanks
Thank you Sir, that's very kind.
Hi Del just caught up with your 2 latest videos - great the engine is in such good conditon 👍
It sure is mate, really pleased with this bike as a donor for the project.
Del as always you are full of wise advice and sage like insights. Awesome to the max Brother 👏
My word, thank you for your kind words, we're really honoured that you enjoy the videos so much brother.
OMG the mount of times I binned twisted hex rods or keys never did I think to cut them and use them the way you just did so a old dog can learn new tricks
LOL
Yes mate, you can get between 4 and 6 cut downs from a long key to slot into sockets.. waste not want not aye..!
Your organised approach, explanatory commentary and excellent camera work is making this superb watching - can't wait for the next instalment - thanks again guys! 😍
Thank you very much Mike, we're glad to hear you're enjoying this new project!
Great vid dell
Why Can't We All, Just Get Along? Rodney King
Said that right Nicholas...
Great video brother! very informative! this project is getting to be very interesting 👍 thank you so much for the content ! soon ill get a harley 💪 btw I use the cardboard as a template as well when working on my bike , great tip I got from you 👍 stay safe guys cheers from new york 🍺🍺🍺🍺🍷🍷🍷
Hey brother, always good to hear from you... and yes, we'll see how many people we can convert to the 'darkside' lol Have a great week both there, keep safe and keep smiling, D&Px
Such style in your work. Quick question del, I haven’t been able to find answers. Does the cam case need to be taken off to remove the generator? I figured I’d ask before I rip my 1980 xlh apart.
Congratulações
Del you are as meticulous as a surgeon and a pleasure to watch absolutely loving this series. Hope you are well my friend.
Thank you kindly Freddie, we really appreciate that... and thanks for asking, am doing a lot better health wise, getting stronger every day!
so well organised Del, a real professional job👍
Thanks mate. Glad you enjoyed it!
I like your work. So very neat. Iam study in your vedios
So Glad I found your offerings! Superb! ? looking at the cam gears,I was wondering what does the gear that spins like a merry-go-round do?
Do you have another term for merry-go-round? I'm looking forward to your next posting
Thank you for your kinds words... the gear you're asking about is the oil pump drive, the little unit that sits underneath the casing!
Are going to do the chain conversion? I know that the belt doesn't required as much maintenance than a chain but the chain looks and perform much better.
It's on the list..
I’m for all the comments from your fans!! What I could do is show big awesome face and big thumbs up !! 👍
We'd love to see it buddy!!
Great stuff
Isn’t a cam a beautiful thing!
Once again an amazing vlog del .. keep the hard work going we all appreciate it
Thank you! Will do!
Another excellent vlog
Thank you so much 😊
Great video Del & Penny. You have one excellent motor there mate, looking forward to the next one. Penny and you stay safe and have a great week. Cheers
Thanks mate👍, i think you're right, well loved and cared for internally and never abused.. cam lobes and pinion gear are like new which is a real relief and will help the budget no end. .
Ooo nice bit of engine work
Hope your well buddy looking good must be the love of a good woman 😂🤘
Sure is mate, and happy to be back in the saddle.
Nice one Del! Excited to see what you do to this bike. Have you got a plan yet for what it’ll look like?
Yes Joe, have a loose plan for the generic overall style, but it's a long way off yet to get involved in styling, am leaving it loose and open so I can go with the best plan as it evolves... first and foremost though, sort the engine out!
great work del
Pretty neat, Del. Did you suspect something was amiss with the cams? I learned lots today from you- as per usual of course!… 🏍👍🏍
Hi Gary, no just wanted a good look at the cam lobes and the pinion drive to make sure they were still nice and fresh... happy to say they are, really impressed with this unworn engine! Have a good week and stay safe both, D&Px
@@Moonfleet41 gotcha- good news then. You both stay safe as well. 😎
More followers in more ways than one eh Del.
Yes I can see what looks like an enthralling series developing. I to have my eye on another V twin the CX 500
What a great base for a project Marc, go for it and we'll follow it every step of the way!
i been watching saturday sportster from lowbrow harley , 2003 sportster, he started the project a little before you, check it out quite interesting !
Why did you put the cam followers in an oil bath?
Exciting time's Del! This is going to be a fascinating build! Can't wait for the next episode. Cheers folks.
Thanks so much Shaun. More to come sir. !
your organization when taking everything apart is next level. really gives me a lot of inspiration since I am just beginning to learn how to wrench on my own bike without any mechanical background. any other tips for beginners like me?
Biggest tip i can ever pass on to anyone is Buy the 'proper genuine HD service manual', they will walk you through every service task step by step and give you a huge amount of confidence.
Are you going to upgrade the oil pinion gear to the bronze version? Best thing for the engine while you’re at this stage.
Where did you get that twisted spike tool from? Looks like a famous Indian Larry twisted downtube
I made it from square bar !
Arhhh!!
The dart scribe makes another appearance with a another use.
That is one seriously tidy engine inside.
You can assume the transmission is the same.
This build will be exciting to follow.
Man you do such mad work on bikes you should open up your own bike shop del and have pennypitstop work the front.
That would be cool, it's a competitive market out there and there are many, many people already doing it that are far better than me... but we really appreciate the kind sentiment!
Was that a 303 or a 308 shell that you made your hole punch from Del.
Looking lovely inside
Obvious signs of the previous owner taking great care of things.
Nick Australia
Hey Nick, no that's a 7.62 x 51 NATO round, a little souvenir from the past mate.... glad you're enjoying this!
@@Moonfleet41 thanks mate
Great hole punch
How are you
I'm well thank you.
