When I think back about 10 or 15 years you could tune into any TV channel here in the States and see some sort of bike build show. Not a single one of them could hold a candle to this series. Del and Penney, you have taken this to a whole new level !!! Loved the tip on the Wiha pliers also. Many thanks to you both. PS... Loved the blooper with the parts/mechanic/camera girl washer.😄❤👍👍

Those pliers look a solid bit of kit and work perfectly. God you have cost me a small fortune over the years 😜 Superb job renovating the forks so far. They sure were in desperate need of it. Great tip with the rubber glove over the nut. I've used masking tape in the past but will try this method next time.

The cap is 1 3/8" but in the video that looks like a 35mm socket so is slightly too big. There is a socket designed for the cap nut but it is somewhat dedicated to that job only.
Great video. Do you put anything on the polished parts to keep them shiny? (clear coat etc.)
You can buy Carbon Collective, ceramic metal coat or Gtechniq on the outer...
Looking really good Del! As a tip for viewers, I sometimes find that the bottom bolt is easier to remove (or at least loosen) while the spring is still installed (to provide some tension and keep it from just spinning). A cordless impact driver can help a lot here too, just to break it loose quickly.
That's exactly what I did Don, did you skip forward maybe?? ...don't remove the cap till you've cracked the bottom bolt, standard practice!

I am a Harley Sportster owner so this project is particularly interesting for me - mine are both of similar vintage - rigid mount carb models etc

I'm not sure if it was said for anyone who is watching but be careful using the triple tree as a clamp on the fork tube to break the fork cap nuts. I'm specifically refering to where the triple tree is clamped on the fork tube. If the top triple tree clamp is clamped down on the area where the fork cap threads into the fork tube, you absolutely will not be able to break the nut loose without damaging or marring something up, if you're even able to break it loose at all. If you're working on it while still on the bike, just loosen the top clamp and leave the bottom clamp tight to break the fork cap. Then disassemble as normal.
I'd also suggest adding some "Ricor Intiminators" if you're staying with the factory suspension and progressive springs. It's a fairly inexpensive modification that makes the factory setup into something closer to a much nicer setup (Ohlins, Legends, etc). I will never run another factory Harley setup without installing The Intiminators in the forks.

I wish I had this video 2 years ago when I did this. I went out and bought a giant socket for the fork caps, then needed a giant socket wrench with a giant drive to meet the giant socket. I put those pliers on my "need to get in the near future" list. I never regret spending money on tools though. I'm sure to need it down the road or be the guy to have it in his arsenal it when a buddy doesn't.
Just got back from the Canaries so a plethora of videos to catch up on, that's a great tip putting a rubber glove over the fork caps-- always learn something watching your films. Hope you're both fit & well, really enjoying the Sportster build, all the best both 👌xx

@@Moonfleet41 my oldest friend had covid 2yr ago & was on a ventilator for 8 weeks, then a yr later he got throat, lung & lymphatic cancer so a couple of us took him & his wife away for a bit of a break, he had a great time which was the desired result. Bit wet down here in Wales, bit glad to be home x 👍

I recently did mine when I replaced my worn out rear shock, dog bones and short link bearings. Like yours Del the fork was disgusting but unlike yours you discovered the bonus of progressive springs. and I got brand new gaiters to boot, sorry couldn't resist 😂

Another great video brother! luckily the bottom bolts came out easy, on my zr750 kawasaki, I had to use a tool to hold the tube while turning the screw and it was a pain in the ass lol . Yes, you're right, they can sometimes come out easily like this, but all too often they don't! Many times I've had to resort to the 'pointed broom stick in the vice', but whatever it takes, just gid'er done! We both had a busy day yesterday, but we'll check the email and reply brother! Spot on. I shall be investing in one of those parts washers methinks! The fork internals are in really good nick, but that oil in them was about as much use as a chocolate teapot! Didn't see your nose turn up at what I can only imagine was a smell akin to changing the final drive fluid on my FJR - rancid, rotten and just downright nasty! Have a cracking weekend both of you

funny enough, when I rebuilt the forks on the Pan Euro, i followed the service manual by the letter and when i ordered the parts from the dealer, they actually asked me what i was doing HAHA They said they never replace those parts. The parts actually had to be special ordered from Japan and took 4 weeks to arrive. Maybe its overkill, maybe it isn't but this is a great video for people to at least get the inspiration to try this job. The reason i find this ironic is because i know a lot of people that pride themselves on the maintenance of their bike being pristine however "dealer maintained" doesn't always mean everything you think it does. Get out there and try any job for the first time.

Glad you enjoyed it mate, you'll find a million uses for that wrench, goes out to 48mm so good for axle nuts, stem centre nut, anything you haven't got a socket for!

Hello Del, Harley-Davidson use Showa manufactured forks and rear shock absorbers. Showa bought Rikuo Motorcycles from Sankyo in 1950, Rikuo had been building there own branded V-Twin side valve powered motorcycles under licence from H-D from 1929 until 1958. H-D were on the verge of going bankrupt in 1929, it was a time when after centuries of isolation Japan was opening up to the outside world, the Japanese people needed motorcycles to get around, unfortunately at that time Japan didn't have a motorcycle industry, so Rikuo approached H-D about building their "Flathead" motorcycles under licence. H-D warmly agreed, they built a factory in Japan and sent their own H-D technician's to the Japanese manufacturing site to oversee Rikuo's production line from 1929 until 1931.
Rikuo built their own "Flathead's" in 750cc and 1200cc variants. production ceased in 1958 due to Showa wanting to concentrate on manufacturing automotive suspension units and not complete motorcycles. H-D have been buying Showa suspension for their motorcycles ever since 1958. Rikuo ceased to exist in 1962 when the company filed for bankruptcy. Not many people know that it was actually Harley-Davidson who kickstarted the Japanese motorcycle industry in 1929.
Hi David, what wonderful insight lies hidden in history! All the friendly and often, less friendly, banter about Japanese vs. American made motorcycles, and in reality they are joined at the hip and effectively one and the same in origins... it's always been said that the Japanese are not great at inventing things, but they excel at development, hence today's Japanese motorcycles are light years ahead of Harley Davidsons... and as an interesting side twist, on the Goldwings, are pretty much nothing to do with Japan anymore and have been built in American for decades... all one big family aye?!

Great tip on glove and socket… the wrench is handy too.. ordered one months ago. That’s heck big compound bar… I wish they sell one here…. All I find is tiny size.

Nice work Del, gah separating the tubes... some come apart by looking and for others, you need to use the elbow grease.
It's amazing how forks,head bearing swinarm bushes and rear shocks get overlooked with general maintenance.

Thanks for the video! I have gone to tear down my forks on my 07 sportster and the damper rod bolts are stripped. Any suggestions?!
Are they stripped, or are they just turning the damper rod?
@@Moonfleet41 the bolts are stripped. 6mm Allen head is completely shot on both bolts
@@hunterwillis393 OK, try the torx bit trick... offer up a torx bit that doesn't quite fit in to the Allen head, then tap it in gently with a hammer till it's all the way in, the sharp teeth of a torx bit should bite on the metal and get a grip of it, this works pretty reliably... good luck with it buddy, let us know how you get on.
What cleaner was that for cleaning the crud, Del? I was planning on using petrol or mineral spirits on mine. Thank you.
Never clean parts with petrol mate, it's absolutely lethal, the fumes end up everywhere and you could end up with a very bad day, this is 'emulsifable degreasing solvent', non-flammable and can be washed off with water if you're painting the parts afterwards!
