Del, watch-out your helmet is uncovered in the background while you're painting!
Would acid dipping be easier and get rid of any if the rust inside the frame , I was surprised at how thick the frame is , you must if list a fair bit of weight . You going for a bobber look ?
Great work and videos! would it be better to rust convert before doing the primer?
cheers
How much space did you leave in between the shock mounts and the new holes for the fender?
If it’s any help to anyone, I recently renovated my bike frame and I used a product called POR15 which I painted on with a brush. It left a thick hard finish which I sprayed over with epoxy paint. Great finish and very durable
How long did the por15 dry before putting the epoxy paint over it? I’ve used it for many projects but never painted over it because I can’t find much info on doing it
Bit of a show off with that catch, but as always I'm waiting to see what's next. I would have been tempted to get it blasted and primed, but it shows that with a bit of patience and effort you still get good results.
Hi Neil, thanks for your kind words... it's great to hear someone address this issue with some respect. In my view I want to do as much of this project myself as possible, keeping hand skills and manual processes going... of course I could hand it out to a powder coat company, nobody would see it done or enjoy the process with me. Paint was good enough for the factory and it's lasted 20yrs, pretty much intact... I'll be using the finest 2k paint with 2k primer and both layers will be individually baked off inbetween, so I'll be doing more than the factory ever did to get a good finish, and sharing it as free content with the world! Thanks again for your kind words.
@@Moonfleet41 It seems that some viewers may have missed the part about FREE content... Who in the world feels the need to give complaints and dislikes to FREE CONTENT?? ...Especially when it's "cracking good" as you boys and girls say across the pond. My honest guess for the negativity is skill envy. Five will get you ten that the "dislikers" and negative commenters have never been in close proximation to an actual tool in their (young) lives, yet somehow feel free to criticize everyone and their mother, based solely on seeing some other way to skin a cat and they ASSUME, which makes an ASS out of U and ME.... But mostly U, young, negative whippersnappers!
I was watching you changing the front head bearing on your goldwing the other day. And I was thinking why didn't there put a grease nipple in the headstock. And now I'm watching this video and can see Harley have fitted a grease nipple. Do know of any other bikes that do this.?? As I think it's a great idea.
Just back from bike night and watched this. Frame chop looks like it could be very interesting in terms of how the bike will look, and those weld splatters were pretty bad. Not something I'd ever considered before as I've always just ignored them on my bikes! Enjoy the weekend Del and send our love to you and P. Stay safe and catch you on your next video mate
Thanks buddy, I think bike owners have become spoilt in the last couple of decades, this bike was built back when there was weld splatter and discrepancies, things weren't perfect, but I kinda like that, it makes them a little more 'real', bike's built by human beings not robots like today! Enjoy your weekend mate.
Nice Catch. And Awesome Job Del 👏 Penny and You Del Ride Safely and Have A wonderful day 😊
Thanks Paul,! You too mate.. enjoy the coming weekend. .
Incredible amount of preparation involved. Well done Del for being the perfectionist. Great that you show how important the prep work is.
Intrigued to see the final finish and what you have planned with the chop. Have a great Sunday both. 🇸🇪🇬🇧👋🏻😊
Thanks so much Paul👍, glad you enjoyed it, and really appreciate your loyal support sir... have a great week and keep safe.. D&Px
Great job cutting the sub frame. I don't want to cut mine because I want to be able to return it to stock. In 20 years, it's going to be a collectible (2000 Sportster 1200 C).
Oh , heck ! here I go again !
I made a comment , I definitely made a comment. I did make a comment , only the comment stayed in my head and never made it to my fingers and on to the Internet.
Oh the joys of ageing !
Love and hugs to you both 🤗 ❤
I know how you feel mate, every day gets us a day closer to Bargain Hunt in the day room...! Oh well, enjoy while you can aye..lol! Peas N Loaf.. D&Pxx
@@Moonfleet41 Bargain hunt in the day room sounds perfect ! 🤪
Hey brother. So the one thing that I hated on the softail was the Harley welding. Always so bloody chunky, spend ages just tidying it up when I’d got it down to the frame. The secret is not to weaken the construct while making the welds look “pretty”. Easy for me to get carried away. But that frame doesn’t seem so bad in that respect. Lookin’ good man.
Sure thing brother, the welds aren't so bad on this, other than being typically chunky, but what is surprising is the amount of weld splatter that doesn't get cleaned up... but thanks to the thick layer of sludge and oil ll over the frame, it's actually not that rusty at all, just around the joints and welds where water tends to sit and fester... and best of all, no scuffs or damage whatsoever! Have a great weekend and keep safe both of you, D&Px
I thought the welds on the '71 Bonnie I had in the 80's were messy (and porous, as evidenced by the beards that would slowly form on every weld where oil passed through the frame). I was actually shocked at the amount of weld spatter on your Harley's frame.
5:12 nice catch, Del!
Cheers mate, couldn't believe that, what a fluke aye!
Another great video brother! I could definitely relate to this, since i went for a bare metal look on my frame and it was a lot of work ! great job brother ! always type of the line prep ! stay safe guys cheers from new york !!! 🥂🥂🥂🍺🍺🍺
Thank you so much as always for your kind words of support Brother, it's at this point in a project that you can finally see the turning point between cleaning out all the crud and decay, and starting the restoration work..! Take care both of you and have a great week.. D&Pxx
Look at those quick reflexes. Nice catch Del!! Looks like you're going the bobber route cutting those off. Should come out great, just like the others. Enjoy the weekend you two! 😎🤙🏽🏍
Thanks Logan, That's the plan mate.
Del. What brand of center scissor Jack do you recommend? I found many online but I want a safe and sturdy one
Mark, I can't make any comparisons mate, I've not tested any against each other... But i use one of these for bikes with smooth exposed frame rails :- www.spanner-monkey.co.uk/scissor-stand-for-motorcycles-450kg-115618?search=MC5908&description=true
And one of these for bikes without accessible frame rails where the motor hangs down lower..! ..! www.spanner-monkey.co.uk/scissor-stand-for-motorcycles-300kg-115617?search=MC5905&description=true Hope that helps mate. Both are in stock.
Job well done on the frame Del and nice catch on that cut off. Looking forward to seeing where you go with the rear tail. When you put the heater on, looks like it's still cold over your side of the world, same this side. Penny and you have a great weekend, take care. Cheers
Oh yeah mate, British summer, it's roughly 2 weeks in June if we're lucky! ...even raining now lol Have a great weekend and thanks for all your kind words of support, D&Px
Hey Del,maybe you should be a litlle more careful with lifting weights 🤘
Great video Del. Look at those cat like reflexes. The frame is coming along nicely. I’ve been waiting for the rear frame sections to be removed. Time for some shiny black paint on the frame.
Thanks buddy, it's all in the prep as you know, so this was a long day, looking forward to a day in the paint shop!
Lot of work there , great job glad to see you've not gone the amateur route and powder coated it , by the way just up the road from you is a good place to get your frame blasted and etch primed , for future projects of course , I've been using them for years good people 😉
I don't know your exact vision for the finished product but that is what is so cool about this series. It's really interesting to see the bike evolve as each episode is posted. A work of art in the making. It's an honor to follow along with you and Penney on the journey. Best wishes. ❤ 👍 👍
Glad you're enjoying it Rick, a project is a journey, rather than a destination, so it's important to enjoy the process I feel... have a great weekend there! D&Px
Gardening Tip: An old builder's van, parked hard-up to the building as a walk-in blasting cabinet, fool the council with a few hanging baskets of 'Titchmarsh drizzle' & the job's a good 'un. : )xx
Nice work, Del! Man do I need a work table, bike lift, etc. lol. I’m getting too old to lie on the garage floor. Hope you both are doing well- enjoy your weekend there! 🏍👍🏍
Buy it now buddy... it's a purchase you will never regret that's for sure. Have a great weekend both of you and keep safe over there..D&Pxx
@@Moonfleet41 I suppose so, Del. Maybe the lift could serve a dual purpose for when the veterinarian comes to take a look at the MIL’s undercarriage. Probably safer than the hoist he brings.
@@garya3056 I'd say that's a good idea, after all, the lift table has tie down hooks for ratchet straps, is also a chequer plate (diamond plate) finish, great for grip with the inevitable slurry leaks, and of course they can be hosed down afterwards along with the patient..! and at 680Kg load limit, she can grow into it ! Genius value for money saving idea brother !
@@Moonfleet41 ahh the slurry… it’s constant. Going to have to check on that weight limit though! lol
Gday both ,attention to detail 10/10 as per usual-- its going to be a lovely build, when I saw the thumbnail I thought it was finished & it was white ( there's a thought), getting to the exciting stage now, have a great weekend both x 👍
Thanks Geoff👍, really appreciate your kind words mate, im enjoying the challenge with this one, looking forwards to the creative stuff.. Have a good weekend too mate.
Ear safe ;)
德尔大哥这车架子用脱漆剂最好。
Happy Friday Del
Same to you Paul, enjoy your weekend and keep safe!
Nice job - especially as the sub frame mod hints at things to come - anticipation definitely built - thanks as always guys! x
Thanks Mike. Our pleasure mate, glad you're enjoying it.
Nice catch on that cut off by the way LOL !!!!.
looking awesome as always.
White frame? Evel rep on the way...hoo yeah! You better get the suit too lad this is serious business now, you've thrown the gauntlet🤣
Amazing work with the frame. I know I’m a little late to the party, but I spent my entire Friday trying to rebuild my forks. Never realized how easy you made it look LoL
Sadly there’s no captions on this one BUT… interesting cutting the frame, cleaning is quite a project!! Curious what’s next!! I envy you able do such project!! 👍
The frame looks like solid cast iron? Must be pretty heavy?
20kg...
del where did you get that green and gray ratchet screw driver from .
It's the main ratchet from this set mate. WERA Zyklop Speed Ratchet Imperial Set 1/4in Drive - WER004019
Your honest hard work and prep always leaves me in awe. I'm hearing Deadpool's "Maximum Effort!" in my head as I watch this. Can't wait to see the next installment!
Wow, thank you mate, always appreciate your kind comments!
Hours and hours of meticulous preparation. That's what I learned from your projects: patience (and know-how) bring about great results. Thanks,
Günter from Nürnberg/Germany
Well said Sir, the more time you take with prep, you get repaid with results.
That looked like a lot of hands on time to do that. The end result looks good though.
Great video, team DBG! This project is really moving. As always it's nice to be along for the ride. Best wishes, happy trails and shiny side up!
Thanks buddy! You too!
Hi Del all them long hours of prep starting to pay off You make the cut off look easy mate hope you and Pen have a great weekend take her out on the gold wing weather looking good
Thanks mate, i think i will, 👍 It's looking like a good weekend, working tomorrow, but we'll fit a ride in for sure. You have a good one too mate.
Looks like you’re going to try for a simple classy single seat interpretation of the sportster. Be interesting to see it develop.
Yes, pretty much, trying to get right away from the classic cruiser style but still make a defined style that makes sense. Thank you for your kind support as always sir... have a great weekend. D&Px
Nice job and the rationale of using white paint in order to reveal imperfections for a professional finish is pure excellence. Thank you mister!
Thank you kindly Sir, a simple principle of a guide coat!
Only a true bad-ass could make that catch after a cut! Nicely done! Now I gotta try to do something just as cool with my basses.
Go for it brother, I think that catch was 50% luck, but there you go, sometimes it goes right!
Maybe, are you thinking of a bobber style?
Fantastic project!!!
Thanks for sharing
Thanks Frank, really appreciate that mate!
Very interested to see what you are going to do with the frame.
Good session Del - intrigued to see what you do with the seat support!
It will all look great, well done Del
You certainly showed that frame who’s boss! Well done to Penny too 👍🏻
Thanks buddy👍 Big job, but just got stuck in and made it done.!
Loving this project! 👍
Thank you Harold, always good to hear from you Sir, have a blessed weekend!
Flat tracker perhaps. Good project, keeping us guessing!
Perhaps Robin, it'll all come clear in the next few videos without any doubt!
hahaha nice catch!
Hard days work there Del
Nice result
Nick Australia
Thanks Nick 👍, it was a big push and glad to be this side of you, you have a great weekend mate.
good job!
Outstanding work again Del, been watching the builds for a good few years, never fails to entertain 👍🏼
Beautiful job Del. Getting excited to see what you do next here.
Thanks buddy 👍, good to hear from you, hope you and the family are keeping well?!
Del, I appreciate your content and mechanical know-how, and I thank you for your video expertise by not having the volume of your grinders and drills twice as loud as your speaking voice! I watch a lot of videos late at night and I'm always dragging the volume up and down. Another great video!
Very welcome Tim, Thank you, we appreciate the feedback !
Your attention to detail is really going to pay off in the end.
Good work, Del.
Thanks Eric 👍, really apprecite your kind words.
Wonderful series!
Looking good must say this project is ur best so far really pushing your self
