- After three months, 20,000 photos, and more than our share of hurdles (especially finding parts), we’ve completed another Redline Rebuild time-lapse video. This time around, Hagerty’s Davin Reckow tackles a two-wheel project, a bit of a Frankenstein bike with the heart of a 1957 Harley-Davidson XL Sportster. No seriously, its engine is an ironhead V-twin from a first-year Sportster. So strap on your helmet because we’re about to speed things up a bit.
Part 2: • Classic Harley-Davidso...

The best project!!!
Hagerty こ
Hagerty amazing job.....amazing editing......honestly....well done
These rebuild time lapse video series is the most satisfying thing to watch on youtube, ever!
You are truly IGNORANT
Damn! time lapse vids are just awesome, they are shot at almost full camera resolution and that is why does not matter when you pose, the 'frame' is razor sharp, so much detail!
Impressive skills, both in time-lapse shooting and engine rebuild.
I would happily watch a complete rebuild of nearly anything with an engine in this format, no matter how long the video would be.
Absolutely love these!!
Hey Bryan!
you guys have the best time lapse rebuild videos EVER
Discovered this channel a while ago and forgot how enjoyable it is whether it be about a Harley or any other motorcycle.
You sir are doing superb work. You stated on the Sportster rebuild the original cast Pistons were failure prone due to cast Pistons. Did you replace them with something more durable? You must have spent days on the phone and Internet looking for parts. But though I am 67 and can remember the first time I saw one outside the showroom was when the kid took delivery of the bike. His first Harley and he saved every fricken dime, Nickle, and penny to buy it. Worked at a small independent Harley dealer one owner three employees. He was paid $1.65 an hour in 1957 and it took three years of saving every penny he could. Half the bike was paid by CoCa-Cola by returning bottles for the $.02 cent deposit for each bottle. Everyone laughed at him until he got the bike paid in full. First mod was to paint in red the name CoCa-Cola Fired on both sides, in October, 1958 he was drafted and wound up in the U. S. Army and served 9 months in Germany where he died in a traffic accident off duty. I was 8 years old when he died and it still hurts to this day even though he was 11 years older than me. To me he was the nicest guy I ever met and would answer all my questions about engines and bikes. Never saw him get mad and throw a wrench though he said the wrench was trying to escape his hand at times.
His mother still has the bike sitting in her basement and for some reason called me back in 88 when she walked up to me and asked if I was little Jimmy which was what her son called me and I'd hand him tools and run to the store for Cokes.
I talked with her about her son Joe until we realized we had been sitting on the bench in front of the store for over 3 hours. I was shocked when she said she still had the bike and even more when she said I could see it. After three weeks of cleaning and polishing it looks like the day he rode it out of his bosses shop brand new. I won't start it even though she said I could, it's got drag pipes on it and I don't think her ears could stand it at her age. I asked he what she plans to do with it and she told me I'll find out when she dies. There were other kids who hung around his garage when he was polishing the bike or working on it but the mothers would freak out and drag there kids back home not wanting them influenced by the " bad biker " living here. My mom thought after she met him that he was fine but mom was the only one to do so. I've got a bad left knee from a bike accident in 76 the other knee went bad a few years ago and 5 stainless steel screws in my left foot. If by some miracle I get the Sportster I will get ridden by me once on its final trip by going back home to the factory in Milwaukee to become part of the factory museum with the story of its history engraved in Brass.
The ole Lady still walks 5 miles every day and I think will outlive me. She tried to give the bike to me several years ago but I refused because I could see in her eyes she didn't mean it.
It still sits in her basement.
Thank you for bring back the sight and sound of a Sportster getting restored and if you ever offer the 20,000 pictures with a narration in realtime on DVD I will order a set.
Thank you.
Note:
I as requested will not tell anyone where the bike is so save your breath. I if necessary will take it to my grave.
I love these time lapse builds you guys do, keep it up!
Awesome work.Real craftsman.
What a beautiful piece of artwork! The camera is very nicely done, soundtrack is cool and the mechanics is first class!
Phenomenal amount of work...and I enjoyed the tasteful soundtrack as well
U know the name of the soundtrack?
This is fucking awesome guys. You deserve way more subs.
NOT SO MUCH!! They're inbred idiots that can't understand a performance motorcycle.
I think Hagerty technicians know everything about assembly,,, amazing,,,
that is insane
how you can take all those components apart and put them back together just by memory
By rote brother, by Rote. I've built so many thousands of engines, I still sometimes dream about doing them. And wining best in class in a car show once. Resto-modding rifles...
Once you know the parts and where they go, 99% of engines follow the same or similar formula. They're not as complicated as they seem.
thats the reason why they take more than 10k of pictures
sad to say harley has flaw engines
if you do it the first time, it's a bit like putting together a puzzle, most components just fit in a specific place and only the right way around, you can't put them in wrong. A clean and tidy workspace, preferably big enough to lay down the parts in the order you took it apart, makes the job much easier too. The only really difficult part of putting it back together is torquing everything the right amount and in the right order.
This is so entertaining the amount of knowledge and skill you guy’s have this is probably all just muscle memory at this point. I’m AMAZED!
This is really amazing, thank you for putting this together.
Just.. what was that piston..
That piston lost a fight with a dismembered valve.
and they could still use the head?
Overbore
extremely abused
reallyallgone ehh no? I would rather think about a too long stroke... it had a boxing game with a valve I think
the amount of patience required to do this is amazing man kudos to the fullest extent. 7 million views well deserved
Who ever shot this film defenetly have insane skills
Dean Griswald He's taking about the way it was filmed stupid, stop being so triggered about all of these complements.
@@fulcrum2168 schizophrenia?
Man, I've seen a few engines, but this is truly a marvel. I guess there is a reason old engines last longer than new ones.
You have quickly become my new obsession on RUclips.
By far the very best time lapse video I've ever seen. Appropriate music, volume level spot on. Very nice work. Thanks.
By far my favorite youtube channel. Have my like!
Soo I watched about 5 of these now and thought, "hey let's watch some other people do a time lapse" OH BOY was I disappointed.
Yall are doing something special over there. I don't think I can end my day till I watch a few more. Keep up the great work👏👏
Not a fan of cruiser videos but gaaa damnnnn that piston lured me in!
That bike is far from a "cruiser"
Proper modern technology!! Check out the size of the skirts on those pistons!!!
1:16 the REAL reason for this rebuild : )
Dropped a valve?
I always liked the little hemi heads on those
amazing and very skilled.
same tech as my 1953 royal enfield bullet- piss easy.
NOT SO MUCH!!!!
I really like that primary cover!
Want one for my '74!!
song 1 : OjOutLaw - Cold Plunge
song 2 : Flux - Hairstanding :)
Thanks ..brow
christophe vergniez thankssss
Thanks bro 👍🙏
This guy knows everything
Wow. That piston looked bad. What happened to it?
Something had to be loose in there? Broken Valve?
You nailed it. Broken Valve.
Hagerty Matt I think the piston nailed it more... xD
At about 1:00 in, you can see the failed valve retainer and spring during the disassembly - perhaps the valve head came off. Could have been the retainer was aluminum, never liked those for anything other than racing applications.
good eye but that was the other cylinder
Is a wonderful work, completely handmade and whose result is simply the best that can be produced.
watch at 0.25 speed in the settings icon and you can actually learn something about the rebuild,
That valve honing was violent to say the least
Great video as usual, you should do a video about how you film all of these!
Devious De they did
What's the video called?
NO
Guessing it dropped a valve?
TO BE CONTINUED......ARGH! lol....Cant wait to see the rest!
Its available now! Check the description
the paint job on that beauty gives me flashbacks to Johnny’s Hexxer from Lost and Damned lol
love it, nice work, guys.
Great content
Wow! Just WOW! Amazing KSAs, baby!
Imagine doing all that every Wednesday. That's what it's like to own a Harley 😆
Haha. These are the "real bikes" that you need to pump an extra 15k into to gain another 10 hp. Yeah sweey Harley bro. The company is going out of business anyways. There will be plenty of restoration videos to come.
@I know you are right, And I just got owned but: its alright man.
@Jmac1000000 nobody can argue that! Expensive garage ornaments.
Fantasy Island! Great work!.
That's it I'm done I'm becoming to become a Harley-Davidson
I could watch this kind of video all day
whats the music name ?
One of if Not the Best Time lapse videos of yours I have seen. P.S. Never knew they had such tall piston domes.
Am I the only thinks this is better than watching porn?
KoolFOTO yes
KoolFOTO yesssss facts
Yes
No, your the only one!
Yup
I'd be glad to take the time to watch that at normal speed. Nicely done.
Put it on 0.25 speed so you get to see it more

Much as I hate Harley's this is one of the best rebuild vids I have ever seen.
I love how they do a spotless meticulous job, yet the shop is a mess. I can certainly relate.
song?
glad to see them rebuilding motorcyle
This is so much better than porn.
Good job. This shop and guys have made skills. My aunt and uncle could rip these apart and put them back together in a day.
Cool video. That crankshaft is awesome. Symbol of America.
How much would you all charge to rebuild my 79 honda CX500 engine?
What a great Full Service shop. In house machining and Expert Mechanics. Way beyond the skills and abilities you will find in your average Harley Store.
Very beautiful work
Just think soon all this will be replaced with just a battery and electric motor and this will become in the future seen like a steam engine in complexity , and people will say by golly they went to a lot of trouble just to have a motor .
Nice video! No boring feeling at all on your 5minute video.
This was really very nice.
Video making was a very nice concept.
99% people put the camera in a stand to take Time laps shoot.
But you've given a moving time laps video. Once again the idea was excellent because for that type of shoot the camera must be keep moving in very very slow speed and you've done it very well.
👍👍👍
I love your video making....
The choppers from the 60s and 70s are the coolest.
whats name of the first song??????????answer please
Gyom-renegade
This is what a you tube video should be
I have a 69 XLCH & a 73 XLH. Nice to see this has gotten so many views. Who knew there was so much love for Ironheads?
Love your videos man.And i learn cleaning motors.
what music is it in the background ?!! someone please mention if you can !! thanks in advance
Chinmay Roy First music I don't know.
But,Second music is "Flux-Hairstanding".
This is gorgeous in all ways. Thank you! Hats off to master craftsmen.
Wonderful. Now if we could only do it that fast in real life....
i want an ironhead so bad. best sounding Harley.
True there my friend, I must of rebuilt about ten of em including my 75 sportster, bored mine out 10 to 1 compression with drag pipes with out baffles, it set some car alarms off, lol😂
Hardworking man...i want to follow his footsteps
I am not a Harley guy by any means. Most of these plastic Milwaukee Parade Floats make me laugh. I have always wanted to find a nice clean 'Sporty' to put in the barn for the odd ride. They don't exist. POOF... they've all been dragged through accessory hell and left in sad shape.
@hugh-john fleming I don't know were you live but in the Chicago market most of the low mileage bikes are Sportsters.
Thats why you go japanese
Years of doing it..nice work gents
Songs?
Nicholas Trail
First music I don't know.
But,Second music is "Flux-Hairstanding".
Darude sandstorm
Less than 5 min on the total rebuild video but they made sure to record the kickstand in slow motion.. priorities, or something I’m not sure. Shows what this channel reps
Harley Davidson when they turn fossil fuels into sound without the "side effects" of HP.
I could watch that for an hour. Great job!
What amazes me, not a single manual in sight. These guys are real pros for sure.
Those Cylinder heads have seen better days
One of the most beautiful things I ever seen .
Are you blind?
No, are you ?
The absolute best editing on YT
Like I said before, absolutely the best on U Tube. !
This is soooo satisfying
DAAAM!! That was a well orchestrated video!😮
Note that properly rebuilding an Ironhead is at least as expensive as the same job on a big twin. BTW if you like that magneto setup you can run that timing cover and matching cams on later Ironheads like my '73 (best year for crankcases and cylinders).
Anxiously waiting for part two!!
Definitely not picking up any pointers here 😅
Magnifico video de mantenimiento y reparación de un gran y magnifico motor modelo Harley Davidson marca Sportste; Este gran video con su música de fondo es mi video favorito de mecánica de motocicleta.
There's just something about air cooled engines, they're the coolest daddyo.
Roll up your sleeves gear head, and getting work!🇺🇸
My 1976 XLH has (spacer washers) with the cam gears. Interesting, I didn't see any with this engine.
Spacer washers are needed to correct 'end play' with each gear.
All engines are unique with their own spacer stack up. Usually these washers will get left out during amateur rebuilds or replacing the cover with a chrome plated one.
Cool video. Thanks.
I usually complain about music but not tonight. Cool video
That was pretty cool! 👍🏼
PLEASE DO ONE OF THESE VIDEOS WITH A TWIN CAM 2000-2005...THIS WAS FUN TO WATCH!
i can watch this all day
fabulous cinematography, and the machine work was excellent too.subscribed
