Streaming is not apple music. Apple music is just one of many streaming platforms.
Without knowing it, I believe what you found is that this device is actually a very poor CD transport. That record does not exceed 16-bit dynamic range and playing it on a very good CD transport or via a good lossless streaming source (like Qobuz) into the same very high-quality DAC the sound will be indistinguishable between one source or the other if everything is set up correctly.
i feel like the difference here was bigger than i thought. My dad and I tried listening to Diana Krall “Let’s Face the Music and Dance” before from his sony cd player onto speakers and than compared it to apple music using a topping d90se, we still both preferred the apple music too, but difference was less obvious. But than again he is more familiar with diana krall as it’s his music and cd. But this test isn’t as consistent as we compared two different sources from a sony player to a topping dac

CD is NOT compressed!!!! it's full 16/44 with no compression at all! and it covers totally the human audible range.

@ryanhostudio you are mistaken from the pdf, it says, recordings done at higher bitrate and then downsampled seemed to lose their fidelity.
There is this whole trend of NOS dacs that pretty much deal with bits similar to how CDs stored.
16bit depth and 44.1khz is generally more than sufficient.
So what matters is how the source content which is in higher bitrate is converted to the 16bit 44.1 khz format.
If you just downsample the audio by dropping samples it's going to sound pathetic obviously.
Because you maybe dropping bits that was essential, which would have better averaged out if the analogue copy of the audio was directly converted to 16bit 44.1 khz signal.
I think you need to start from scratch to study how digital audio works...

Yes you can, in fact it is the preferred way of extraction of data. The preamplifier will need to have a Dac.
Yeah, it has coaxial and SPDIF out...but honestly the DAC on-board is the flagship AKM, unless you have some very boutique DAC it's among the best you can get.
i dont know where you get your info from but i use 24 bit to burn songs on to cds for years and its lossless and thats burning with windows 10 lol

What a load of dribble
If you use earphones, you can hear noise when the player goes to the next track on the CD. This is very annoying and not acceptable. If it didn't have this issue, I would have kept it.
Spotify often sounds more musical than hi-res. Vinyl is very poor technically but can sound sublime. Musicality is something that can't be measured.
you can’t measure musicality because it’s a very subjective term, like you mentioned spotify is more musical than high res, but clearly high res has more information and data and it’s more resolving
Spotify sounds really bad...I wonder what's the interpretation of musical when certain sentences get written because I struggle to understand what's musical about clipping sounds and artifacts...
IMHO, a high-end CD player is definitely better than streaming. Especially TIDAL is the worst of them all.
i used apple music and connected my iphone 15 pro directly into dac via usb and my diana mr connected directly into internal amp in the back to test. What CD player do you use/recommend?
