    A few thoughts. First, the PL200 apparently has distortion issues when used solely as a transport. Meaning, you are beholden to that DAC. The ET3, by comparison, is a pure CD transport. Second, the ET3 has upsampling that I know yields a better sound than the PL200. Third, the ET3, as a transport, from what I can tell beats out the Cambridge Audio CXC, the Audiolab 6000CDT (and 7000CDT while we are at it -- as well as the Evo), and even the Jay's Audio CDT. That is some serious company, making the ET3 an end game CD transport -- and it really will be about making sure you have the highest quality DAC and such at that point. Fourth, and this is wild to me, but the ET3 has USB audio out as well as USB audio input; making it pretty similar to the Urd in that respect. To summarize, I guess I am confused why, given the ET3 is a CDT, it would be compared to the EH3. I guess if you are considering the ET3's secondary benefits -- streaming stuff -- then I can see the point. But I think those buying the ET3 are doing so wanting the best CDT they can afford, with the streaming stuff being secondary "that's cool to have I guess" features. For those with CD collections like mine (and I still prefer CD over vinyl for a lot of my purchases), a device like the ET3 makes a lot of sense -- and at almost half the price of the Urd.

      @PassionforSound  5 месяцев назад +1

      It wasn't compared to the EH3, they were discussed as a pair because that's how they're marketed by Shanling

    • @christopherorman5769
      @christopherorman5769 5 месяцев назад

      @@PassionforSound true --- that is a good point about how Shanling is presenting these two devices. I had forgotten about that. However, I suspect Shanling built these with overlap knowing the ET3 would sell more to those as a replacement for their Jay's Audio, et al, and so wanted to include those other bells and whistles (according to Musictek, they couldn't keep the ET3 in stock). One last thing I think bears noting is that in this day and age, you pay a significant cost to own a top loading CD player. The Jay's Audio is the only decent one I can think of, and it costs close to $3000. To me, top loading is the best system for listening to CDs. Slot loading players and trays fail -- and even sometimes scratch CDs. The ET3 avoids those pitfalls.

      @@christopherorman5769 Love the vidio and both of you know a lot about this I have the ET3 and am getting the EH3 I only play CDs ans i love MQA. @PassionforSound  3 месяца назад +1

      @jkelley2091 if you're sending the signal via optical, that's a digital signal so the DACs in the soundbar will be active to convert it. You'd have to use an analog connection like RCA or XLR to avoid that and be using the Shanling decoder.

    Second, can the ET3 upsample USB input as the signal passes through?

      I will add to this, and say in my experience using I2S output, the ET3's upsampling to DSD 512 is miles (and I mean miles) better than anything that comes out of the PL200 -- as a transport or using the internal DAC. The ET3's upsampling obviously helps with jitter, improves accuracy, helps with the soundstage a bit, and improves clarity. Saying that, the ET3's highest level upsampling is NOT available when using AES, optical, coaxial, or USB. USB has no upsampling. AES, optical, and coaxial are limited in how much they can upsample. Therefore, you are going to want a DAC with I2S capability (and check the pin placement on I2S as well to make sure the DAC is compatible) to maximize the ET3's upsampling. If you do, I don't think the PL 200 comes close to competing.
      If you are using I2S, then the ET3 can upsample as a "pass through" if you will to DSD 512. But if you go with AES, optical, or coaxial (or USB) you are limited in your upsampling.

      All great points here. If the ET3 matches the I2S input configuration of the Ares 12th (or if the Ares 12th has a configurable input (does it have dip switches for the I2S pin out?) then the ET3 could be great.
      I2S is generally a high quality option for connections and will carry higher sample rates than optical/coax, etc. of that matters. As others have said though, a lot depends on the DAC and I don't know the Ares 12th to comment on it specifically.

I wonder if perhaps there is some hardware-based stand-alone device that uses this chip or similar to take a USB stream and up sample it, without needing to use software like HQPlayer. Of that kind, I only know Chord Mscaler, but it is way out of my price range.

I think Shanling's intention is to run them side by side or put them on a rack so you can still access the physical buttons on the EH3. Yes, the Shanling software can be a little quirky. I didn't have a setup to test some of those specific features so I'm sorry to hear that there have been issues beyond the CD functionality (which is solid).

    A very incomplete review. As an owner I can warn you about Shanling sofware bugs and total absence of followup.

      I can only discuss what I've experienced during my time with the device and I had no issues (which doesn't invalidate your experiences)

      @@PassionforSound Quite surprising. Amazon feedback, Android and App Store, Headfi, Headphonia, etc all specify the software problems and non working features. I'm concerned with your reviews if you don't find any basics flaws like this will all due respect to your work.
