  • I've been dying to speak about my opinions on OPAL since it aired. As a psychological horror buff, any exploration of the human condition and psyche gets me pumped beyond belief, and I believe OPAL was done so incredibly well. Everything from the unnerving visuals to the chilling character interactions kept me enthralled at every step. And not to mentions the absolute BANGERS that dropped with this project. Like come on!
    On my last video I received some advice to add music to the background of my videos. I didn't end up doing that on this essay because I felt it benefitted from a more quiet and somber lack of sound. I wanted there to be more of a focus on what I had to say as opposed to any dilution of the subject matter through additional sound. Let me know how you guys feel about background music, if you know of any good ways to implement it into future videos without sacrificing mood I would love the advice!
    Be sure to like, comment, and subscribe. Any interaction with this video will help me out (but you already know that).
    Oh! And while you're at it! Why not check out my audio drama "Solarity"? We stream on all the major podcasting platforms, as well as on RUclips! Check that out below :) The final episode just aired so you can binge listen to the whole first season!

    a lot of people say the father is disfigured, but it could be a visual metaphor like the other parts of the reveal scene. In mirror mans it could be his corrupted inner self that is so covered up with his outside appearance coming out for the audience to see. Also, not to be a stickler, but it's pronounced "St-ow-bir"

    • @Mookiluv
      @Mookiluv  4 месяца назад +1

      is that really how its pronounced I'm deaddd I'll keep that in mind for future videos on his work. Also, nothing is truly set and stone in OPAL so if that's how you interpret the father than its just as valid as my interpretation! I can see his tormented insides being reflect on the outside as a interesting take on his character!

    With how the mother talks throughout her scene and from the lines in her song I think that the one falling in the 2d part is the mother, needing her daughter to be there to support her rather than the mother supporting her daughter.

    While all of the adults are a problem, like most narratives, the story escalates: the Mom is the scariest person to Claire. In her fantasy, the mother’s hands are held behind her back, the father is the only one her mind allows to touch her
    The Mom closes her segment with a threat, grabbing at Claire likely to strike her (“You’re just as powerless as I am - *see*?”)
    The Mom is belittling (“Decided to be a person today?”) and blames others for the Mom’s violence (“They never repent the way the want them to”); those lines do not reply to but instead set up some of the Dad’s lyrics about being small, rejected for no reason, etc
    I’m firmly in the camp that the Mom’s clip show are her attacking the Dad, who found no support as a male DV victim (“They turned me down, now I live my nightmare/There has got to be someone out there”). Now he preens to the point of self-harm. Total fanfic on my part: something of a narcissist to start with, maybe the Mom left a tiny scar with the wine bottle from the flashback and the Dad spiraled?
    Phew, long comment! But your thoughtful video inspired a thoughtful reply. Subscribed!

      Love that interpretation! I always felt there was some distance between the mother and the father so I never connected their narratives together. Since all the family members are essentially in their own worlds due to their own issues, the only person I felt they had any sort of relationship towards (albeit very negative) was Claire. When the father said "they turned him down" it could either be in reference to the mother and the grandpa as its clear its a plural statement, or it could be in reference towards other people outside of his home life, and due to the lack of support or communication at all within his own home, he perpetuated a negative view of himself and had to come up with a way to resolve that on his own. He's very childlike in nature as well, so I feel this event must have occurred in his childhood, stunting his growth as a person and mental development as well. My only question then is how did the mother and father end up together in the first place? (probably out of wedlock)

    i came to think that the dad called 911. he was being abused by the mother, who disfigured him. He tried to call 911 but got dismissed. "they turned me down now i live my nightmare." Your theory is just as good and one i havnt heard yet.

    • @Mookiluv
      @Mookiluv  4 месяца назад +1

      Yea that's def a possibility! The reason I don't feel like it was the dad calling 911 is because it felt like it was the moms backstory during her youth, and an explanation of sorts as to why she developed the mentality she has now. We see that the event that occurred is what eventually drove her to her addiction (as seen with the next scene in the flashback with the pills), and I don't think she's the type of person to actually care about what happens to other people. That's why I feel like something must have happened to her specifically to develop her strong victim complex!

      @@Mookiluv im going to sound like a absalutist but it 100% was the dad who was abused. The reason i know this is because there is an easy to miss frame.
      In the sequence that has the grampas eyes turn into opal the mirror turning around to reveal opal and the medication turning into opal symbolizing how they use claire theres a easy to miss frame even at .25x speed where you can see the fsthers face is disfigured.
      The reason the father was turned down because his face was disfigured after the mother went into jail. Notice how the order is jail, phone, then incident. Its playing in reverse order and the thing shown first when it zooms into the moms eyes is jail.
      The thing is the mother has this why me perspective and views the other two as adversaries as her problem she puts up with. She has a need for others to fix her problems when she is herself the problem. A lot of abusive people have this idea people owe them because they are a victim.
      An aspect of opal not talked about is the cycle of neglect where one person passes their problems on others. Its why she imprints the idea that she is just like claire a hopless victim. The grandfsther to mother to daughter.
      This is by the way no excuse for the dad but his mentality is that he isnt good enough. However just because he isnt blaming other people for his problems doesnt make him a good dad.
      Some people argued that he isnt a bad person he is just broken but if he really isnt all that concerned about claire despite knowing the house hold is full of things like needles and broken bottles.
      I would jusr argue he just isnt as bad because he isnt holding this why me mentality.

      @@somedorkydude6483 Thank you for commenting! What you've described doesn't 100% state the father was abused. We see his face is morphed in a split second turning of the mirror, but the person who caused his face to look like that is unknown. Of course, it could have been the mother, and you're totally valid to think that's the case, but its left ambiguous purposefully. The father could have been the person to destroy his face due to a disgust for how he looks, similar to how some people use Botox and end up damaging themselves instead. In regards to the jail then 911 then incident, we don't see who was put in jail nor do we see who does or receives the attacking. I personally believe the incident we see is the mothers backstory before even meeting the father. This would make sense because it was show WHY the mother developed the why me attitude. It was due to trauma in her youth. I believe this to be the case because we also see the mother screaming in the flashback as if witnessing a crime. It could have been an abusive father returning from jail, the police were called because he wasn't supposed to be there, then an attack on the mothers mother. At the end of the day, nothing is 100% certain in this scenario and all interpretations are valid!

  • @somedorkydude6483
    @somedorkydude6483 3 месяца назад

    Just a correction the mother wasnt hit by an abuser she is the abusor. The mother hit her husban with the bottle.
    We are given a rough idea why they are the way they are. But essentually its implied grampa neglected the mother by trying to escape his own problems.
    The mother made the father feel like he wasnt good enough from her constantly blaming others and not taking responsibility.
    Opal is also finding forms of escapism basically its not flat out said but opal is likely just going to continue the cycle of neglect.
    In real life there is a path a child walks when they are raised in a bad house hold they either become their parrents or hate everything that they were. Sometimes both.
    Opal/claire may grow up to hate them but her mother is also teacher her daughter to be helpless so there probably isnt hope for opal.

      Its not 100% that the mother was the one doing the physical violence seen in the flash back! Its also not 100% that the father was the recipient of the physical abuse! Its a good interpretation but its not the singular truth of the flashback!

    I always got the vibe the vibe the grandfather was s*xually abusive to Claire as well as being physically abusive too idk why but I just always got a weird vibe from him of someone who is too comfortable with putting his hands on her.

    • @Mookiluv
      @Mookiluv  4 месяца назад +1

      That's actually a really good point, both him and the mom are totally okay reaching to hurt Claire in some way. I'm not sure if he would sexually abuse Claire as I didn't personally get that vibe, but he may have put his hands on her thinking she was someone intruding on his house!
