  • I'm a psychological horror buff, and let me tell you, Disney's Wish is peak psychological horror. I never expected to see this type of mental decline in a Disney film. This film was nothing like the brand Disney's been cultivated for years. While flawed in execution, this difference was the main reason I ended up enjoying this film. Its a story of a man losing everything due to a downward spiral, a bad decision, and a kingdom completely stacked against him. Essentially turning our intended villain into the tragic hero, and our intended heroine into the villain.

@@MookiluvRight I didn’t think he’d be the villain, because ya know granting everyone’s wish would have catastrophic consequences on the world.
Like for instance someone could literally wish to be an all powerful god, or the ability to control fire like the firebenders in Avatar. You see what I mean, and plus the kingdom didn’t have any poor people in it. Magnifico perfectly balanced granting wishes to not granting wish.He seemed like a great ruler to me.

I wonder what was going on in Magnifico’s mind after he was trapped in the mirror.
Hanging on the dungeon wall, Magnifico is scared and confused. He’s trying to piece together everything that happened. After opening the book, it’s all a bit hazy. He waits for someone to come down to him. But no one does. He’s scared what on earth he must have done in his possession to deserve this. But surely someone would understand, he’s their king after all. He’s always looked out for them, he’s built them a whole kingdom, he’s spent every waking moment trying to protect them. He hopes at least someone will hear him out. But no one does.
The days go by. Magnifico cries for help. He cries for Amaya. He refuses to believe she would abandon him. After all they’ve been through together, after all those years, he refuses to believe she would drop him just like that. But Amaya never comes. The realisation that she has abandoned him seeps in only gradually. Magnifico is beside himself with grief. Alone in the dark, he is alternately consumed by guilt, sorrow, terror and rage.
The months go by. He still calls for her, even though he’s lost hope. The silence is driving him mad - sometimes he can hardly remember who he is. He starts to think that it would have been more merciful to kill him. But in his quiet isolation, all he can do is wait.
Eventually, his emotions fade to apathy. For the first time in his life, he no longer cares. Nothing matters anymore.
The years go by. All that is left of him now is disappointment and lingering fury. He’s never forgotten the loss of Amaya, but his grief has finally turned to resentment.
And so, when after a hundred years of unimaginable loneliness, a woman calls upon the ruined husk of Magnifico - “Mirror mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?” - he thinks to himself: Oh yes. I’ll play into your vanity. I’ll play into your selfishness, your entitlement, your petty, stupid desires. And I’ll gladly watch you tear yourselves apart. So Magnifico replies: “You, o Queen, are the fairest of them all.”

I'm a true believer that this movie was Magnifico's villain origin story, and that he wasn't actually the villain in this film. Asha, inadvertently, was a villain doing what she thought was right, but I believe Amaya could have been pulling the strings and manipulating those around her to end up with the throne. She would make an AMAZING twist villain, and I wouldn't have been surprised if the film ended with some evil smile from her or something. If that were the case, I think Wish actually would have been a great movie, and that would have recontextualized the whole film.

This movie honestly would've been brilliant and quite revolutionary for an animated Disney musical if Magnifico were the main character and the story _intentionally_ played out as you describe. As is though, I think they were trying to go for a traditional Disney bad guy but failed miserably since they've become rusty at portraying charismatic, scene-chewing villains who we love to hate like Frollo, Scar, Jafar, Maleficent, Ursula, Cruella DeVille, etc.

    • @Mookiluv

You are absolutely correct. He failed as a standard Disney villain and Asha failed as a standard Disney hero. I wish it was intentional that the story was told the way it was, but ultimately it was due to poor writing choices and decisions by Disney.

Magnifico is a wonderful character who was wasted on a shitshow of a movie. I don't consider him a villian in the slightest. He was hurting, and scared and eventually had a breakdown as a result. But when he's possessed, people still think that's HIM. But it's not. At that point the magic is in control and Magnifico himself has taken a back seat. But his wife and his kingdom see him stumbling around on stage or screaming about being handsome WHILE HIS EYES ARE GLOWING, and are too short sighted to think, "Something is wrong, he never acts like this." And at the end? he's scared. He's hurt and he's sad and he's being thrown away and he's not possessed anymore so he doesn't really know what's happening. It's disgusting that he's punished like this. Finally, look at the messages this tells kids! It tells them that mental illness should be dismissed. That if someone has a mental break or a substance addiction that they're worthless. That loved ones don't deserve help because YOUR needs are more important. I hate this movie so much, even though it gave me a new favourite Disney character. A character that sadly, we will likely never see again.

I understood what the writers were going for but they failed to convey it. They were trying to show that Magnifico did not care for the ppl. He just kept their wishes giving them hope but in reality, that's how he kept them in control. His intentions were good at first but then it was just power. BUT the writing was so poor they did NOT give that impression. The first mistake was that giving your wish is OPTIONAL and they all knew they would forget the wish and it being granted was like the lottery. Second, they gave him a traumatic past. That makes him very cautious. And he overthinks a lot. Ppl with paranoia tend to be controlling because they think their way is the only safe way. Not to mention his system has been working for years. Three he showed empathy. He was going to hire Asha just because he had empathy and he even opened up his personal life with her. Four, Rosas is a utopia! Everyone is happy even though they are "missing a piece of themselves". No homeless, no starvation, no discrimination, no taxes. Supposedly the wishes they gave were the wishes that make you who you are but most of the wishes were shallow and vague. Asha wants ppl to have a chance to pursue their dreams on their own but she becomes a fairy godmother. They literally just created a new Magnifico and are contradicting the lesson. Asha is supposed to be the hero but she learned nothing in her hero journey. The writers just made Asha and the ppl spoiled and ungrateful. I thought they were going to save Magnifico from possession but apparently, the magic is SO powerful there is no going back. Yet they defeat him by SINGING! That was so lame. They were cruel. Lock up the guy with PTSD because he had ONE day of insanity. Forget about everything he has done. I did like songs and animation. My favorite song is "At All Costs" I also put that one on repeat. I rate this film 7/10.

And for the song "This Wish" when Asha says "something more for us than this, " I was so confused about what she meant. More what? If you aren't happy there I will take your place 😅

I’m making an AU/Rewrite that expands more on his possession and having Asha and Star’s (whose now Starboy from the concept art) motive go from wanting to get Sabino’s wish to freeing Magnifico from the forbidden book. Also Amaya shows way more concern for his well-being.

The reaction of the Queen, especially at the end, was what bothered me the most. The movie goes out of its way to call her his loyal wife. And then she gives up on him pretty quickly. First, breaking the hold the dark magic has on him seems almost an afterthought when she's plotting with Asha and the others (how well does she even know Asha anyway to think to go to this teenager instead of anyone else for help?). Then when she hears that once he's given in to dark magic there's no turning back, she takes it in stride and moves on. In a different story, this idea could have been used in a redemption arc where their love, or his genuine love for his kingdom/people, or innate goodness (with help from other characters) won out in the end and saved him. But the worst part was her joke after he's imprisoned in the mirror. Not even a hint of sadness or trying to reason with him after who knows how many years of marriage? It's not like she was shown to be unhappy or frightened or even disagreeing with how Magnifico did things before he turned to the book. I would have liked this story better if they had both been villains. As it is, the Queen doesn't come off looking great. I can't imagine other Disney couples tossing each other aside this easily.

The biggest issue for me is the counter for "why not give everyone their wish back?" Is simply "why did you give your wish to him in the first place?". The grandpa is older than magnifico, meaning he had to have already been trying to get his wish done for YEARS, gave up, and sought a magical solution instead. Everyone that gave him their wish gave up on fulfilling them already.

Magnifico is not the blame. Asha is. Asha has 0 interests for saving Rosa. And 0 interests to learn magic. So not sure why she even bother to take this apprenticeship if she’s going to act like that - to her king, no less. She has the audacity to call her king selfish, even though she’s the most selfish one. Not only that, Asha left out one important fact about Magnifico that she didn’t tell her generic seven friends. The part where the king nearly lost his home to selfish greedy people that nearly destroyed his world. Apparently, that didn’t matter to her. And she got the queen to side with her. Wtaf. Wish was a movie that I don't think needed to have a villain at all, and yet they shoehorned in this confusing mess of an antagonist.

Doing this, at the end of the day, both harms ourselves and others.

If Disney had done the movie like you're saying, it would have been such an amazingly refreshing change of pace from their obsession with the bright-eyed princess stereotype. She just came off as an entitled, spoiled brat. I was so much more interested in Magnifico for literally all the reasons you gave. His design is perfect, and his story is compelling. I really enjoyed every single minute he was on screen. I think what kills me is that, even if they had made it so his people betrayed him - the betrayal of Amaya hurt even harder. I think if she'd just been there for him, and not betrayed him at literally the first test of faith, he might've come back. But Disney was just so hellbent on making their 'villain' that they had to ruin probably one of the most promising Disney characters we've had in years. It is truly a shame for what he COULD have had. Magnifico will always be one of my favorite Disney characters, but not the way Disney intended for him to be.

  • @Toshiro93
    @Toshiro93 20 дней назад +4

Magnifico has been put on a par, by Disney itself, with the other villains in a century of animated films. Just to underline the ridiculousness of this choice and to do full justice to the true hero of Wish, namely Magnificent, I would like to place him next to Shan Yu (Mulan).
Magnifico ruled for at least 17 years (Asha's age) in total harmony with the population.
The subjects are free, not forced, to donate their desire, their aspiration, and they know the mechanism very well: they know that desires, in order to be fulfilled, must comply with precise rules and that, whatever happens, they live in a peaceful and prosperous.
Magnifico repeatedly demonstrates that he listens to others, even seeking the help of the population...help that is denied to him by the superficiality and childishness of the people, who only want another ceremony of desire.
When he is in "evil" mode, incited in any case by a magical artefact on which the queen reveals there is an antidote to avoid falling prey to it (one wonders if she has hidden this information from her husband), he limits himself to keeping his subjects in place... .that is, once that stalemate was overcome, what mattered? To keep them in that state forever?
Furthermore, he is "so bad" (and I am highly ironic) that he is not granted any appeal: one would expect, at the very least, Magnifico's redemption, especially considering how he was presented in the first half of the film...instead he is condemned to an infinite existence as a prisoner of a mirror... I don't know, to me it seems worse than death.
And what's worse, he is betrayed by his wife, who first flatters and adores him, then dumps him without even trying to make him come to his senses once defeated.
Shan Yu, on the other hand, has had the soldiers killed on the Great Wall, burns the imperial flag as a challenge to the emperor, annihilates an entire army and presumably the nearby village, and threatens to kill the emperor in revenge for the loss of his army . Oh yeah, he also gets one of the scouts killed.
Honestly, I feel embarrassed for both of them seeing them compared: the second is a ruthless villain, the first is a tragic hero.

I agree, I just wouldn't say that Asha is entirely selfish just because she cares about her grandfather. It's completely natural for someone to care for the people we love the most and even when Magnifico said his wish was vague, Asha was right to step up for him. She knows him better than anyone, of course she would know he had not ill intentions.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Depending on how the wish granting magic works, especially if there's a monkey's paw type element. If that's the case, then his judgment is correct, the wish is a touch too vague. Asha may know her grandfather's heart, but she clearly doesn't consider the fact that she knows nothing of how the magic works. Blind optimism and ideals can be dangerous unless tempered by a healthy dose of realism.

If her grandfather was alone playing a guitar in that Wish like a certain woman plays a violin, then it would make sense what his Wish would be. He would be granted a new guitar. But he was surrounded by people and talked to them, it's actually difficult to determinate what exactly he "inspire" them to. What exactly Magnifico can grant his "inspiring" Wish? His "Urge"? His "Talent"? His "Music"? Is he going to be a Siren? Is he like Pied Piper's Magic? Is he going to be the next Hector? The Wish is actually two faces of the coin, it can go the right way or it can go the wrong way.
Remember what happened in the "Coco" movie? It can ended in badly due to one of those people he was around. Inspiring people can lead to do many things - either start the revolution with music or killing him for his music/song. Beside, he's 100 years, it means he had to be waaaaaay above "18 years old" when he arrived to that island but he didn't even practice on a guitar nor the written music book in the sight. There is no way he "suddenly" plays a guitar without learning all music notes in few hours?! 100 years or at least half of his age is too long time without touching a guitar, it would make him completely rusty. Is he a super genius? 🤔🤔🤔
When you see the Wishes are all released back to those people who are selfish for asking more. ALL of the Wishes.... you know what it means, it included Bad Wishes too. Their Wishes are based on their desires and thoughts, right? If they got their wishes back and remembered their wishes.... You know what that means.... It's not going to be pretty when they remembered what they ACTUALLY wants and CAN DO what they desired to.

I was just watching the movie and if I was King Magnifico I would do the same. It’s my magic, my Kingdom, and he has every right and should evaluate each and every dream to ensure that granting a wish is good for him and his Kingdom both of which he worked very hard to build. Sure try to be fair and just, but at the end of the day, “I decide.” And he opened the book of Forbidden Magic (this world’s version of the Dark Hold/book of the damned) because he was obsessed and determined and desperate, to protect what was his, particularly from people who are greedy and envious.
This movie could have been better if maybe King Magnifico banished/executed his subjects who dreams were interpreted as treason, opposing Magnifico’s rule, and perhaps banished/executed Asha’s father, Asha blindly follows the king and learns the truth and then tries to overthrow Magnifico to avenge her father and fulfill his dreams, or something.

But Amaya and Dalia learn that there's no way to either stop him or to redeem him. I feel so bad for Magnifico. Aside from resorting to forbidden magics (and even the reason for that is kinda understandable), he really didn't do anything wrong. He didn't even steal any wishes even though people like to pretend as if he does. They gave their wishes away WILLINGLY. He didn't force anyone and it wasn't even a deceitful type of deal. The people are fully aware they'll lose the memory of their wish (that was kinda the point of the deal: that he'll keep your wish safe, perhaps even make it come true, but never will you have to experience your dreams being shattered). If someone claims otherwise then they are either stupid or lying. This system has been going on for decades, it'd be impossible to hide even if Magnifico wished to do so. Also, prior to being corrupted by the book, Magnifico didn't even know he could get power out of these wishes: "All this time I've protected the wishes not knowing... the power they yield!" (btw, note how he uses the word 'protect'). He was not "hoarding" them for some grand evil plan of his but out of legit care for his kingdom. It's not like he has been doing a bad job either. His kingdom is extremely prosperous, its' people well cared for.
Yes, Magnifico might have been overly paranoid and kind of a control-freak and there's underlying issues with the system he has created (more on that later) but that doesn't make him evil. It just means he's flawed. The man has PTSD from his previous home being destroyed ffs. Is it any wonder he tries his hardest to prevent this from happening again or that he reacts poorly when something reminds him of it? Ironically, his need to maintain safety/control is partly to blame for why the people of his kingdom act so entitled and obsessive about wishes, thus he inadvertently ends up giving himself more stress. There's moments in which he expresses very clear frustration. When Asha, ignoring him while he was opening up about his hopes btw, asks for a favor as soon as she secures a good position with him ("Well, that was fast. Most people wait a few months or even a year to start asking me for favors.") and when he, probably for the first time ever, asks his people to HELP HIM to keep the kingdom safe and instead they be like: "Nah, we only care of what you can do for us so gimme wish granting ceremony plz!" He snaps with: "Is that all you can think about??!". Like, I feel you man I really do, but you kinda unwittingly enabled this behavior by spoiling them. Not that the responsibility lies solely on him but you know what I mean. He basically encouraged people to depend on him and now they are glad to treat him like their personal wish machine who always needs to give more. They don't *truly* respect him as a leader. It's tragic really.
The movie would have been WAY better if all these nuances were actually explored instead of them suddenly trying to make him an irredeemable villain. It just doesn't work at all. Magnifico simply doesn't have the traits to be a classic eeeevil Disney villain and the fact they try to frame him as such is just sad on so many levels. It would have been a stronger message if Asha helped Magnifico realize that he didn’t have to control everything to make his people prosper and that being a happiness pump wasn’t healthy for him or the kingdom. In turn Asha could have learned important lessons from him and curbed some of that naivety. The people also should have had a moment in which they reflect on their entitlement. That they are ashamed their King couldn't rely on them after everything he has done to build them a good place to live. That would have given justice to Magnifico, that would have actually helped him with his flaws and mistakes, and it also would have made Asha (and the people of Rosas) way more likable.

I think the biggest problem with the story is that the writers never bothered to explain why he needed to hold their wishes in the first place. Its not like people only have one wish. Most people have an endless number of wishes. So him holding a single wish from each person didnt seem to have any clear narrative reason other than making him appear nefarious somehow.
Even though at the beginning, he is written in such a way that he claims to hold the wishes for good intentions, there's no obvious threat against the wishes other than "well maybe they wont come true." But again, people have countless wishes that wont come true so him protecting one from each person doesnt really do anything.
If there was some evil entity out there that could harm a person if it knew what their number 1 wish was, and Magnifico said "ok, to protect all my people from Entity X, i will hold their number 1 wish safe in my castle" then this would start to make sense. Then they could have had Entity X play both Asha and Magnifico against each other in a scheme to corrupt Magnifico and tempt him with the dark power using the wishes. Then the Entity X could possess him or something once he is corrupted enough and you could have similar things play out. This way Asha's selfishness would actually justify Magnifico's fears, because he is actually legitimately protecting the number one wish from the evil entity, possibly at great cost to his own mental health, and Asha blindly destroying that system could result in his frustrations boiling over and causing the mental break that allows him to be fully corrupted by the entity.
This way Asha's actions can be more gray, not black and white. She doesnt understand the delicate balance Magnifico is barely keeping under control, and she ruins it although believes she is returning everyone's wishes. That would allow growth for her while still letting Magnifico's descent into villainy be tragic.
Im sure there are other ways to fix this but thats just one idea 😀

Wish is not the Worst Disney Movie Ever," but rather something worse: NOTHING. For a film that's supposed to celebrate the company's 100th anniversary, the story was far too safe and soulless to carry that mantle, with all of the Company Cross References being completely superficial.
The company that made Snow White isn't acting like the company that made Snow White.
It's the use of other Disney characters in the end credits because the movie didn't earn the right to use them.
King Magnifico was wasted as a villain, as the movie initially portrayed him as a potentially layered antagonist given his backstory, only to turn into a vain, selfish tyrant at the drop of a hat while also making the Magic Book that supposedly corrupts him rather pointless.
Several times during the movie never shows us any "bad" wishes, which would give Magnifico a legitimate reason not to grant every single wish lAsha wanted.

Imagine if this had happened in Frozen. "Oh no, Elsa went insane and almost kills her sister, welp there's clearly no way she'll ever reflect, the only thing we can do is lock her up forever without giving her a chance of redemption."
And do mind this is Disney, the company that the past few years has been going "Remember Maleficent? Remember Cruella de Vil? They deserve to be vindicated." But apparently one of the few rulers in the entire franchise who is not a complete disaster doesn't.
    It's unfair.

This video is a great example of why "Death of the Author" interpretations are a great tool for critiquing flawed plots and characterizations. Your sympathetic interpretation of a character the writers try to force into the "villain" box provides a more consistent explanation for his behavior than the movie provides, and elucidates how the more "evil" actions he takes are clearly contrivances the writers had to make to delegitimize Magnifico's solid points. Great job!
I'd like to make 2 observations of my own. First, I think another point against Asha is that the movie fails to provide evidence that her actions were necessary to save the kingdom. Sure, one can critique Magnifico's methods of maintaining his rule, but if you remove Asha from the story, Rosas likely would have continued as before, and Magnifico would never have had a reason to start crushing wishes.
Second, and this one may be a stretch, but I wonder if Wish is in fact not a tribute to Walt Disney, but rather a rebuke of him. Sounds crazy, I know, but isn't it a little odd to make a movie celebrating 100 years of Disney, and then make the villain a man who built his magic kingdom upon wishes?

I think framing is the issue with the Asha and Magnifico dynamic. If the movie presented Magnifico as a paranoid monarch overly obsessed with control and deciding what he thinks is best, never letting people pursue their own dreams and wishes, then you could present it as a threat to individuality. Something like a light Wall-E type future. Then Asha could fight for their right to do so, while Magnifico reluctantly relies on the book for more power before he becomes completely consumed, and then free him from the book's influence through the power of the people's wishes to overcome him on their own. This helps him realize the error of his ways and opts to follow Asha's example, ending with him making her his successor or something.

You're point of view on Magnifico is exactly why I couldn't like Magnifico. Magnifico at no point in the story is a villain, yet Disney wants us to believe he is. They screwed up so much that they don't even understand their own characters.
The only villain in the story is the black magic book. We can't even see the mental breakdown of magnifico aside from his "villain" song, which doesn't represent much. He's simply afraid that he'll lose everything he's built and the lives of everyone he sword to protect and in order to do that, he feels the need to tap into black magic. The book takes a hold of him and he's literally not the same character. He is either corrupted or mind controlled by the book, which pretty much makes him a victim of Asha's actions.

Character was fumbled on so many levels. This had so much potential to go in so many ways.
This could've been a Nineteen Eighty-Four situation where Magnifico and his evil wife used his sorcery to oppress his citizens in sinister, insidious ways or a twist villain in Asha where Magnifico was actually right but she refused to accept his wisdom, overthrowing him only find out that, once in his position, granting or returning every wish is not so easy as she had thought from an outsiders perspective.
It's literally built into the marketing material: one of the posters straight up says "Be careful what you wish for", opening the door wide for a Wishmaster situation or a twist where Asha gets what she wants (the power to decide which wish gets granted that she was sure Magnifico was mishandling with none of his experience or knowledge of Wish magic) and learns that maybe she isn't so much more clever than him after all.
Instead we get a villain whose only villainous attributes seemed to be a smidge of arrogance (understandable from someone who literally developed magic to GRANT WISHES and built a kingdom from nothing, I'd argue) and past trauma that caused him to overreact when a naive and ignorant young woman decided to threaten everything he built.
He fails as a villain, especially after the promise of a "return to form" of the classiv malevolent villain. As it is, he's a tragic victim of his own traumatic past more than anything.
Villain of that movie is either Asha (who basically overthrew the king only to take his place) or the evil magic Magnifico turned to when he felt like his kingdom was in danger.

You're telling me that with the years that she has known him, the fact that the movie even IMPLIES that the book Magnifico used to get a grip on the kingdom is the very reason he lost his mind and she DOESN'T EVEN FEEL THE SLIGHTEST BIT OF EMPATHY FOR HIM?
Asha may be incredibly selfish and stupid, but what Amaya did is straight-up inhuman.

Magnifico lost his home to magic. He used magic to give people what they wanted and sometimes couldn't give EVERYONE what they wanted(which is honestly very fair. I mean, one person might want one thing, another person might want the opposite)but then Amaya comes in questioning his whole system and judging him and then we're supposed to think "What a jerk, he won't let her old grandfather become a musician? The scoundrel!"
Magnifico should have been redeemed and cured of the corruption. They could have had it revealed that another Star had dropped in Magnifico's kingdom and someone used the wish to do something REALLY bad that destroyed it(created an evil army, etc;).
The wish popping should have been Asha's fault. His wife could have been the actual villain and manipulating Asha so Asha would help her take power(and given it was the hundredth movie and the first Disney movie villain was the Evil Queen, it would have been a good parallel, but nnoooOOOOooo.)

Yes, he's far from perfect, he's not on the level of legendary Disney villains like Tremaine, Cruella, Jafar, the Evil Queen, Hades and *certainly* not on the level of Maleficent and his song is bad but I found him to have interesting and pretty unique (and potentially massively OP) powers, his design is really cool, his voice acting is excellent and I think he could have become an extremely good bad guy.

4:04 uh oh wrong. Asha wasn’t the one who asked all the questions who caused him to use the book of dark magic. Asha is not the one who let the book take over him while perfectly knowing the consequences. All Asha did was questioning the morality of Magnifico’s actions. And she made a good point : by keeping the wishes of people whose wishes weren’t meant to be granted, Magnifico made them totally dependent of him. This is the fundamental flaw of his system, and the fact that he doesn’t even realize that there is something wrong with stealing the dreams of people to keep the trust in his kingdom makes him pretty frightening. He may be genuine in his actions, but he should at least have thought of something for the wishes he didn’t want to grant, such as granting what people need not what they want, or not making them forget about their wishes.

I find it ridiculous how people just completely forget that Magnifico turning evil and almost dooming Rosas was, in fact, entirely his own fault. Of course it wouldn't have happened without the protagonist, but Asha herself has never done anything that would justify Magnifico turning so desperate.
The problem with the film's writing, is that they built the kingdom around a wise and great king, only to give him negative attributes later on in the story, even before taking up the book. This confuses a lot of people, but realistically Magnifico wouldn't be able to achieve this "paradise", because he has a lot of insecurities. He may want good, but ultimately he is irresponsible and egotistical as hell.
Like, imagine if Rafiki just told Simba that "Don't face your past, it will hurt and thats a bad thing, its best to just not bother with it", which is basically what Magnifico thinks. Put in this context, its quite obvious why his beliefs are extremely harmful. Sadly people just consume the ideas that are easy to understand and are already shared by others, hence why we see so many people repeating "Magnifico is the actual hero"

    • @Mookiluv
      @Mookiluv  13 дней назад

Magnifico experienced extreme trauma in his past and created a prosperous kingdom which survived FOR YEARS on his "flawed system." No one complained. People sang the praises of the kingdom and Magnifico, and were willingly giving away their wishes to participate in his system. Which is a lottery by the way! Asha's "good point" came from a place of naivete (which is pointed out in the film) and selfishness to get her Saba's wish granted. She blatantly disregards the problem with granting every wish, and proposes a new form of government almost immediately, without any thought on how that would impact the life of the people in Rosas or how it would be perceived as a LEGIT MUTAINY in a monarchy. His position and his kingdom was threated by a rebel group, he did what he had to do to protect their prosperity. He turned to an evil book, and that's when his actions become any form of villainous. Once again, it is a tragedy, and this movie was his villain origin story where he was made by Asha's actions.

@@Mookiluv Do you remember what Asha actually said during their conversation? Or can you quote that line of hers from the movie?

    • @sonicsilveramy
      @sonicsilveramy 10 дней назад +1

@Mookiluv His trauma isn't really an excuse cause he was still taking wishes and willingly built a codependent society only to complain about his people being selfish later on. He likes to throw blame and make assumptions about everything. If there were actual bad wishes, it'd make sense to destroy them.
Why hold onto something dangerous? Even after Star arrived and the wishes reacted, his first thought wasn't "Oh no, I gotta make sure X wishes aren't affected" He's just concerned about a new magic user being in his kingdom. Guy just loves control.
In context, the fact a 40-50 year old man willingly throws away everything just to prove a point to a kid and her goat is funny.

@@sonicsilveramy Except he isn't 40-50 years old. We don't know his or Rosas' exact age from the film, however looking at his backstory, its not far-fetched to assume he is more than a 100. Sabino is one hundred years old after all, and while his backstory isn't clear either (this film was well written), he may have been born in Rosas.
What I'm saying is that, its not nonsensical to think Magnifico, as a great mage, extended his own lifespan. Which of course makes his behaviour even more ridiculous than it already would be for a man of that age

He grants his people’s wishes to the point they are asking him for their wishes to be granted. They took over his kindness to the fact he been doing this for years. They want to keep taking and taking. The main protagonists was want was to get her grandfather wish granted but refuses to great it because he believe that the grandpa might inspire people to start a rebellion. He kinda at fault too because those dreams are part of who they are. It kinda sucks that he got punished for using forbidden magic. But he did made that choice so I don’t feel bad for him. He was given warnings from the queen. Even if he was possessed too, he still did those horrible things. But I can’t really wrap my head around it

This moral was done better in Bruce Almighty, when he just says yes to everyone's prays without giving it a single thought. And as a result the world turns to ruin. He wanted the power of God without the responsibility that came with it. You can't grant every wish people have because not everyone has the same moral values as you. This movie had good songs and the building blocks are there for an amazing movie.
