My transition to Linux began in a similar way: I embarked on a one-month challenge to see how it would go. I ended up using Linux Mint as my daily driver for both work and gaming. I chose Mint Cinnamon, updated the kernel to the latest version to match my hardware, and customized my IDE to my liking. That's it.
Linux Mint is pretty much my favorite distribution. I also like PopOS but I did have various little issues with PopOS from time to time. Thank you very much for watching and commenting!
@@KMHardware Suit yourself ヾ(・ω・*)ノ If there are continuations of this video, I will be interested to watch it. Lately, I've been intrigued by how people are slowly and curiously starting to learn Linux. In recent years, this system has become more friendly for migrating users.
I will for sure be doing an update video (or more) From other comments on this video, it seems I made a mistake picking KDE Neon to use. I probably should have done just a bit more research before picking my distro! Haha. Oh well. In my next video I'll address the comments and choose a different distro. I hope you stick around to see it! :)
If you want to use kde plasma desktop environment with an Ubuntu base, tuxedo os or Ubuntu studio are good options. Kde neon is normally used for testing out the latest version of plasma and not recommended for use as a daily driver.
Thank you for this! Yes, if I had of done even 1 oz of research, I would have read that KDE Neon is more a "showcase" OS. Ubuntu Studio was actually really nice! However, I had issues with OBS. Also, Ubuntu Studio did have metric ton of software I'd never use. Thank you very much for watching and commenting!
A bunch of years ago now, I did use Linux for a couple of years straight. But, I got back into PC gaming and eventually dropped Linux. Thank you very much for watching and commenting!
@@KMHardware I mainly use pc for gaming, I even fixed things such as Vram leak for d4 which has no solution for windows. Unless you play destiny 2, fortnite and cod... all the rest works. Get something like Nobara 40 or CatchyOS and you are going to have a better experience than on windows now.
Yeah pretty much the only game I play needing windows is COD. I did try Nobara last year. Not sure which version now.. it was a bit "heavy" for me. Never heard of CachyOS. I'll have to have a look at that. The only thing is, every time I try an Arch based Linux, I always struggle with it. Probably because I just don't know enough about arch based distros yet.
Is KDE Neon really suitable for a daily driver? Based on their FAQ it is not: "There is no thorough review of the complete software stack to guarantee a rock solid day-to-day experience." "KDE neon supports the open-source Nouveau driver only, which should suffice for normal hardware-accelerated desktop use. The proprietary driver is not supported at all, and we recommend against trying to install it anyway."
Well shoot!!!! I didn't read any of that when picking KDE Neon as my daily driver! Ugh. I did install the Official Nvidia drivers and so far have not had any issues. However, now I am sure that I chose the wrong distribution. Dangit! Lol. Thank you very much for this comment. Looks like I need to rethink what distribution to use. You got any recommendations? I do prefer Debian based but not Ubuntu itself.
@@KMHardware Linux Mint is always a solid choice. There's the "Edge ISO" if you want a newer kernel or LMDE (Debian Edition) if you don't want anything based on Ubuntu. If you want KDE Plasma I don't think Linux Mint has such ISO available (you could install the Plasma DE separately though) but maybe try plain Debian.
@@KMHardware Also, if you don't have any issues with KDE Neon I don't see why you couldn't keep using it. Based on some comments around the internet many people are using it.
I was thinking of trying CashyOS. Arch based and sort of optimized for AMD. however, ARCH base distributions are kind of my kryptonite! Lol. But maybe I should just man up and learn how to use an ARCH based distro.
@@KMHardware Don't know if you know but KDE Neon is the demo distribution for the Plasma project by KDE. Linux Mint is a great suggestion, in my opinion Arch based works as well (I'm a big EndeavousOS fan) but no need to touch it if you don't like it.
Personally I'd recommend something along the lines of Debian, Fedora or Ubuntu/Ubuntu based distros for daily driving. If your hardware is super new I'd go with Fedora mostly because of the newer kernels, any of those should be stable enough to daily drive though.

For me it would be a challenge to daily drive windows for 30 days.
