    Why did you put in that GeForce (or any) graphics card? And also, why did you passthrought those NIC's and not give them to proxmox, so all VM's benefit? And... Why bother with the passthrough of the (non-nvme) disks? Instead of importing the unraid system, why not reinstall it add the disks to proxmox and copy over the ~700Gb to a new fresh box?. So many questions... Hahahaha. No judgement, just wondering.

    • @KMHardware
      @KMHardware 5 дней назад

      Yup! OK so this channel small enough that I can take the time to answer your questions. So to start off, I had almost 2 hours of recorded footage for this video. It is always a gamble how you trim the footage down to make a video. I didn't bother showing the trouble I had importing (passthrough) the disks into Proxmox as I felt it wasn't compelling enough to leave it in. As well, this wasn't supposed to be a "tutorial" video. "Why did you put in that GeForce (or any) graphics card?" - The HP Z440 motherboard does not have onboard video. Would need a GPU to drive the monitor to actually install Proxmox. As well, I was thinking about messing around with a media server and by extension, video transcoding. A graphics card is pretty much a required item for that. "Why did you passthrough those NIC's and not give them to proxmox, so all VM's benefit?" - I didn't show it in the video but one port of that 10GbE NIC was originally used for my Unraid system. I have an identical NIC installed in my main computer. As well, I currently do not have a switch capable of 10GbE. One day, I will have a full 10GbE capable LAN! That NIC was previously configured on bare metal so I could have a really fast connection between my main computer to the unraid server. As far as any benefit to any other VMs, I don't need a "fast" connection for any of the other VMs... and I just wanted to get my unraid server back to what it was when it was on bare metal. "Why bother with the passthrough of the (non-nvme) disks?" (Paraphrasing - "why not just reconfigure the array and move data after you have backed it up in some way...") - So yeah, the point of the video was, "Can I successfully move the bare metal install of my servers to Proxmox and virtualize them?" (P-->V - Physical to Virtual) I actually have a few TB of historical channel videos backed up that I have already copied over to the unraid VM now. For this video, I left some non critical data on the unraid share to make it easy to see if I was successful do P-to-V. As well, even though I didn't show passing though the disks. The process of passing through disks is the same whether they are from an existing array or brand new. In reality, it was actually faster to import the existing array rather than start over. Thank you for watching and for the engagement on the video with these questions!!! :)

      @@KMHardware Thanks for the elaborate answer. I thought you had some LACP 10Gbit switch setup. And no onboard video... Hehehe, ok. makes sense. I have P2V-ed probably more than 100 linux machines. I used to do the "dd" thing, but started using tar and rsync instead. It's a bit messy, but it's so quick and can greatly reduce downtime (almost non) and have not had any issues with it. Cheers!

    I would recommend using "Proxmox VE" for a server setup like this, given your hardware is powerful enough... Proxmox VE is basically a virtualization hypervisor, with a web based GUI. So you can manage everything remotely over your local network, without having a monitor connected to your server. My home lab has three Proxmox VE servers, configured in a cluster, with about 20+ VM's. Each VM has a simple dedicated task, such as "Minecraft server", "Factorio server", "Plex server", etc... All servers are fully automated, so I just have to click "'start" in the web-UI, and each VM starts all it's required services automatically after boot-up. The upside of virtualization, is that you can easily configure fully VM backups in the Proxmox GUI. My VM's backup automatically, on daily, weekly or monthly interval, depending how important I deem their data. I can also live migrate VM's between the three servers inside the cluster, without connected gamers being disconnected from the servers. It just gives a 1 second hick-up, that's all... Note: You can use Proxmox also on a standalone server, then backup VM's to a NAS for example. It's however more fun to put 3 machines in a cluster 🙂

      100%! I used to have proxmox server running until the physical server blew up (mainboard). I've made a couple videos about proxmox on this channel. I used to run my Dayz servers using proxmox. I do have a couple a couple of other servers, but those 1U servers are way too loud. I currently have an HP Z440 workstation but it is not yet complete. I bought it basically empty. Need a few more parts to get it operational. I may go back to proxmox using that workstation.

    Sounds excessively complex for something rufus will do in 10 minutes where you can set your brain to cruise control. And a decent USB3 flash drive will outperform gigabit ethernet and be super reliable. Plus using a USB key lets you do inplace upgrades of windows ... which are now pretty reliable, and let you fix a multitude of system problems without manifestly affecting the user profile and data. Given that operating system images change frequently enough that it is easiest to just download the latest image.

    • @canthearu4876
      @canthearu4876 14 дней назад

      Furthermore, for your situation, I would seriously look into using virtual machines to segment your different game servers, and to actually also audition different operating systems before deciding what to use for production. This completely also sidesteps the whole needing to create USB keys and such thing too for the most part. So either Hyper-V under windows, or KVM/QVM under Linux. Both are great options that I use and can recommend. And if you are brave, you can do your auditions, and if everything goes well in setting up a virtual machine for the game, say on your desktop, you can just copy/migrate the virtual machine to your server and save yourself a ton of work.

      @@canthearu4876 Agreed. Also, the majority of regular users don't have their homes wired for ethernet so PXE is a non-starter. Edit: what I had wanted to do was use the existing studs that the x-clamp mounts to, drill them through and tap them with the thread needed for the water block mounting screws that I used. That way, I could have put the x-clamp back on to stop the board from flexing from the pressure of the water block mount. But, I didn't have time or budget for that.

      @KMHardware i was thinking of trying an am4 bracket instead it might be easier and cheaper and puts less stress on the board and on the mounds the holes are bigger than the 360 heat sink xclamp screws so it can fit and either thermal glue or something else to make them stay

    I use a spare Mac Mini with 2 internal drives plus 1 external drive as my NAS a total of 6TB storage in a tiny enclosure. Mac OS is a great choice for file and media sharing setting it up is far easier than Mint and it wont eat into your power supply like that big boy desktop....I have been down the Openmediavault Trunas route before and found it inefficient for home use.

      Excellent setup! A long time I also had a Mac mini with a simple file share! That mini is long gone now. I do have some very efficient mini PCs kicking around but the trouble is always: how do I connect multiple drives to them. I did find a couple of multiple drive enclosures in the past but they are so expensive! Thanks for watching and commenting!

    You could make this RAID significantly easier to manage by going with ZFS. Standing up a new SMB share is literally one command. ' zfs create -o atime=off -o compression=lz4 -o sharesmb=on -o recordsize=1024k $zpoolname/$mydataset ' and then chown/chmod the dataset as needed. And if a drive fails, you can replace it with like 2 commands. zpool Offline it, and zpool replace - and let resilver finish.

    I still think that CasaOS on Debian is by far the best choice - excellent for 'low level' users, can include the Desktop GUI or not (entirely optional), and can be accessed with a GUI over the Internet. Either way, love this - I like seeing much less 'professional' setups like this, reminds me that not everything i do has to be absolutely perfect in every way possible.

    • @KMHardware

      I've never heard of CasaOS. I'm going to have to have a look at it. And yeah, about the DIY setups, this channel is tiny, not enough subscribers to be monetized. (yet) So yup, anything that I have bought for videos is paid for by my day job. Those bigger channels get to enjoy sponsored hardware given to them. Not that this is my ultimate goal.. but I wouldn't mind growing the channel to enjoy some of that one day. Hehe Thanks for watching and commenting!

      A long time ago I build a PC in an old blue and white G3 case. I bought a conversion motherboard tray specifically designed for that Mac. But you can do it without out a conversion tray. A Dremel, some motherboard standoffs and some elbow grease and you can do it. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    • @falco642
      @falco642 24 дня назад

      @KMHardware yeah the blue and white g3 look pretty cool i looked into it and the problem is the g4 mdd is that they have a completely different layout than the standard g3/g4 so the motherboard ao and pcie slots are reversed i think the easiest would be to steal some parts from a standard g3 or g4 to make the g4 mdd work .

    Well done! The units die because the capacitors go bad in the power supply, so re-capping the power supply usually resolves the issue. Don't throw out the power supply, they have a really, really rare form factor. The system boots from firmware, then looks for disks I am still running one right now. I also have a Duo. There are "some" 3rd party software out there There are "some" GitHub resources out there It's running a cut-down version of Debian (sarge) It's using an infrant CPU (variation of a SPARC1) The SSH credentials are root:netgear1 I have 2Tb x 4 in mine Maybe there's some interest in setting up a discussion group around this little bit of ancient tech?

      @@KMHardware - My unit is happily chugging away 3 feet from where I am sitting. I had to replace the power supply about 6 years ago. I woke up one morning to find the apartment filled with smoke that smelled like fish. All of my data was on that machine, so I spent a LOT of money buying a replacement power supply due to the rare form factor (like USD100++) and I used FedEX to get the power supply to me quickly (another USD100++). So, for all of you playing along...avoid my experience - learn to adapt a power supply (like in your video) or how to recap a power supply (ruclips.net/video/b40g3NDy9mM/видео.html)
