  • In this video we are on Route 66 in Upland, CA to check out the Madonna of the Trail statue. The Madonna of the Trail is one of twelves identical statues that are found across the United States, to honor the spirit of the pioneer mother. The one in Upland is the only one that is currently on Route 66 (the one in Albuquerque used to be on Route 66, but isn't now).
The statute was dedicated on February 1, 1929. The statute also includes a time capsule that was opened in 1979, and then rededicated to be opened again in 2029.

I have passed by this statue thousands of times at the corner of Foothill Blvd. and Euclid Blvd. in Upland, CA. My grandparents lived very close to this statue over near Upland HS. You might consider doing a video on the "Bridal Trail" which back in the early 20th century had a railway from the base of Mt. Baldy where Euclid Blvd starts, all the way down to Ontario. It was basically a rail car pulled by a team of horses as I recall up to the end, then the horses were loaded onto the back of the railcar for the return trip all the way down to Ontario!! ......Russell Decker

I wasn't familiar with the Bridal Trail. I'll definitely look into it.

Looks like it had graffiti on it at the time you were there. It was clean back in August when I visited.

I'm glad they cleaned it up. Why anyone would vandalize it I'll never know.

    Incorrect information.
August Leimbach concieved the madonna concept in 3 days. I am the grandson of the sculptor.

That is really cool that you are the grandson of August Leimbach. You must take great pride every time you see them. Not sure if you missed it but I clearly credited August Leimbach as the sculpture in the video,. The idea to erect the sculptures belongs to Ariene B. Nichols Moss, who was chairperson for the Daughters of the American Revolution. it is true that after your grandfather was hired to do the sculptures he had finished his clay interpretation of the Madonna of the Trail in only 3 days, which is amazing. Thank you for checking out the video.
