I absolutely LOVE this city 🌴 I would love to have been there in the 50's & 60's, so beautiful ❤🌴
Me too!
I've lived in the Palm Springs area since 1987, and boy has it changed. I would have loved to have lived here at that time.
You live in a beautiful place! ☮️✌️☮️
@johnmcquilkin It's really gorgeous right now. The blue and purple mountains around us are topped with a ton of very white snow, and the desert is all green with purple flowers everywhere due to all of the insane rain we've gotten lately.
@welcometothejungle3222 I will come check it out. With all the rain, I bet it does look really nice! 🏜🏝🏜
@@johnmcquilkin It really does. And with spring just around the corner, we should get quite a natural show with everything blooming.
That music, that soundtrack is so chipper & happy! I adore that period sound!!
❤🎉 I wish I would have lived back then. People were so much more pleasant. Less wannabes and even those were more pleasant back in the 1960s.
I moved here in 1967, graduated 1969 CVHS. It is so nice to be able to view the area from back then before so much development. Thank you.
Everything, everywhere - was so much better back then
go back then
@@gigahertz_1911 As long as you weren't there, it'd be great.
63 years ago. Time flies. I wonder if it was better back then . . .
Yes, it was better, peaceful, beautiful and very entertaining. Although some of those qualities can still be found today the people are not as interesting as back then. We used to dress for every occasion, to go shopping, for dinner even if it was at home ( something I still do ) and of course for the evening entertaining at home or outdoors. Imagine getting " dress " for entertaining guests at your own poolside. Those things I do miss.
Produced and hosted by Jack Douglas, an Assyrian born in Iran in 1921. Died in 1994. Pioneer producer of travel TV shows, all filmed in color, from the early 1950's thru 1960's. Douglas provided the blueprint for most travel shows that followed. This video was from AMERICA!, a travel series that was syndicated in America for one season, 1964-65, distributed by CBS. Supposedly, Douglas also owned the master films of all of his productions. However, the only AMERICA! clips available are inferior quality, like this one.
I'm sure that I'm the only one who knows about this man and his show on this thread. Sometime in the 70's he tried to bring back the travel TV show under another name, but, it didn't catch on because of the bad film quality. Probably with today's technology they might be able to remaster those old films and upload them here on RUclips. Thanks for sharing your memories.
Jack Douglas has a similar Iowa drawl as John Wayne.
This is incredible footage!!
Went here last month, still has that strong 1960s vibes
📠 💯🙋🏻♂️🤘🤘
That's nice. Love the 60s.
Going there soon. I get that feel already and I haven't been there.
I was thinking 50's?
I grew up in PS , graduated High School. I LOVED IT!
Dad owned the Ingleside til his death in 2016.
Alittle history... Lily Pons lived at the Ingleside for yrs before she bought a permanent home.
@6:53
is Liberaces home on the corner.
I miss Cirones, they had great ziti.
Pon's home was below mine on the mountainside overlooking the canyon corridor.
Thank you Gary. I love hearing about the history of Palm Springs. Do you still live in the area? ☮️✌️☮️
Not anymore.
Grew up there from 75-89.
Left for the USN in 85,
then lived in Diamond Bar area after getting married in 93,

Beautiful documentary. I keep thinking about the figurines at the beginning.
This brought so many memories to me. I grew up in the Coachella Valley. What a simple time back when this was filmed.
Lucky you!
I grew up all over the Coachella Valley and miss it so dam much its so different from most places I lived at
They don’t make things like this any more! Isn’t that a shame!
I was in Palm Springs last week.
What was it like? Im really curious!

Two years ago as of today June 7th, 2024 and no answer ...
... Does that silence gives you any indication ?
People spoke in sentences & paragraphs.
I'm a native New Yorker, and although I lost my desire to re visit Ca. Palms Springs would definitely be an exception to the rule. I know this is vintage footage during a time when décor and civility was the norm, I can't speak for what Palms Springs is like today. I'd have to research that. But if there was ever a place that I so regret that doesn't exist anymore, is Robert Bolzor's "TIROL" Restaurant. I wouldn't hesitate one moment to see that place IF it was open. Oh Well! Great vintage moment, Thx for uploading!
Its still the same they like to keep the same vibe and 60’s architecture ❤️
@@Phoeberuthless Are you saying its still there? Because when I researched it, It stated that it wasn't unless I inputed the wrong place and location
I live in palm springs and man, it is NOTHING like the sleepy town which appears in this film. Big hotels going up, a plethora of great restaurants and, since the pandemic that let people work remotely, housing prices are now insane. Example - 10 years ago friends paid $340k for their sweet, 1200 square foot house. Last month they sold it for...
$1.65 million. Still though I wish the town still had some of the quaint charm shown in this film.
The Downtown area that is featured in the beginning of the video has changed completely and is looking more like LA now but some of the original buildings are still there. Miss Cornelias house is still standing as well!
@@Phoeberuthless that's why I'm looking forward to going. It's like if CA didn't change almost it seems
Thanks for sharing
first visit,1961...different here nowadays..would have never guessed....old people are lurking
People had a lovely way of speaking...calm, gentle, polite. 40 yrs of predatory capitalism has made us hostile, agitated, and despairing. We can't collaborate anymore, we can only compete with mean spirits.
@Jeff Spicolli You mean the socialists who created Social Security, Medicare, public school system, highways, fire dept, national parks, libraries, 40hr work week, child labor laws, GI bill, etc.? The New Deal had so much support FDR won 4 terms...one election he won all the states except Vermont. But you'd rather keep protecting the corrupt corporate elite at the expense of the people. You'd rather overthrow the republic and install plutocracy. You great "patriot" you.
The 1950s was more pure capitalist than we are today. There were no government hand outs, welfare, food stamps, mental health services. The population was just smaller with family values and no drug use, complete opposite of today.
@@mjo3275 The 1950s was about building a strong middle class based on FDR’s progressive New Deal. He knew capitalism only works with strong regulations against corruption and protections for workers. He won 4 terms…the American people were less predatory back then until Reaganomics brought out the worst in us.
@@lascreen3198 You need a history lesson. The New Deal is from the 1930s Great Depression. All of the work projects had ended long before the 1950s. There was far less government regulation back then compared to today. We’re closer to socialism than we’ve ever been. We used to have a more pure capitalism back then. “Predatory capitalism” it’s a ridiculous opinion. I say that because it’s not a fact. We had a smaller population back then and more room to build.
@@mjo3275 Your right wing media has left you unable to discern the reality you are living in. The New Deal built the middle class of the 50s-70s. Ronald Reagan ran on deregulating capitalism and rolling back the long lasting effects of New Deal. There was more legislative oversight to prevent corruption. Conservatives wanted to make corruption legal, hence deregulation. Now there is barely a rule of law for the elite.
No mention of the historic La Quinta Hotel with its great connection to old Hollywood
Beautiful vidio, lost times.
If I ever get to visit,I'll be expecting this ! I'd probably be somewhat disappointed.
You are probably correct.
I was thinking the very same thing! So sad!
Nah, it’s still pretty great.. the city preserves a lot of the history. Sadly much is lost to time.
@@sarahbartlett1196 Hollywood is dead. I was there last year and is the most depressing hollow feeling.
Things were so much more Peaceful back then. I would've loved to have been here in Palm Springs during this Time-The Way Jehovah God The Almighty Intended when he created the Earth. Peace and serenity and friendly people everywhere. well there is going to be a new peaceful Paradise coming soon. What a Joyous day thast will be.
That guy bought land for 30 dollars an acre . Sold it later for 800 dollars an acre . What a deal
Currently there's an empty lot for sale in the Las Palmas neighborhood for $5.5M and It's under 1 acre!
@@PSPguy2 amazing .
The city council removed the statue of former mayor Frank Bogart. Why? Google it. He wasn’t PC any,ore
I've lived here since 1980......just look at who is on the city council!! God help us all....
Had no idea Lucy and Desi founded a hotel there that's still there!
my very first trip to hawii christmas 1969.same year as this video.they did'nt show polynesian village
Hawai?
December 1964
I moved from southern California in 1992, so i never got to experience it at its peak, my grandparents and parent did though, i wouldnt want to live their now though due to the state government and over regulation now
IT HAS BEEN SPOILED
Fame eventually poisons, and CA IS worldwide famous. Now old news. Americans used to move there, but not now. Sad, my My mothers family immigrated to WLA in 1870 along with 60000 people escaping Northern France war with Germany. Now I must leave my beloved CA. I'm mad as Hell.
California is still a great state! Don't fall for right-wing lies about it!
Who built sanfranciso?
I can't imagine how they made it through those non-stop 115 degree summer days without any air conditioning.
My dear ... we had air-conditioned homes in the 1950's and we all have pools. These two essentials is what made Palm Springs a great destination and the playground for the whole family.
Where does one order his reincarnation ?? I wanna be born in that era
I hear ya! Seeing the post JFK monument, I had to have been about 6-8 years ole when this was filmed. I didn't see an exact date annotated. But I loved watching those cars from that era!
Actually, had I read the comment below this one, it was done in '69, which puts me at 11 years old. At least I'd been old enough to enjoy myself, if I was able to go there! (LOL)
The world was a less greedy, overpopulated place back then. But in every era there are many problems. That's life.
@@ralphsanchico2452
It was filmed December 1965.
Urban sprawl and water waste is great 👍
Where are the Alexander homes?
bob balzar’s got a wicked scar on the side of his neck- gotta google what happened. …there is no info about his scar. : (
Possibly a wild bear attack.
yes...in the words of Steely Dan...'...while the poor people sleeping with the shade on the light...while they poor people sleeping all the stars come out at night'
nice lot of the places are long gone homes are way over priced $1,000,000 for. a house id go to the coast for that.
NOW IT IS THE CAPITOL OF DRUGS AND HUMAN TRAFFICKING
Right-wing lies
