I saw them at a pub in '76. The scheduled group didn't show up and this group called The Damned got booked at the last minute instead. Nobody had heard of them. The audience was expecting something like The Eagles and when these freaks started playing New Rose about 1,000 times faster than anything they'd ever heard before nearly everyone walked out. This was the birth of punk rock.
I can remember as a young punk there was a group of us that always used to get the bus to Birmingham every Saturday to hang out - we always used to sing this on the bus, one would sing guitar, one would play the seats like drums and the girls did vocals....brilliant and to the annoyance of all the other non punk bus goers!
yay! if only they played music like this on tv today im so sick of crappy music. my da introduced me to this its from way before my time most stuff i listen to is :) 15 yrs old and a rocker at heart thanks so much! :D
I don't know why, but you can really feel a kind of energy radiating off of this song... I'm not a hippie or anything, but after all of these years, this music still feels alive like it did when it was first recorded, you just don't find songs like that too often...
i remember buying this, and blasting it out of my bedroom window! the rest is history, but did catch them at some warehouse gig the next year...happy days, great vibe with all their music..
Thanks for the correction pmc!- I thought that Nick Mason had produced the first LP as New Rose was on it, but it was the 2nd LP-Apparantly they wanted Syd Barrett to produce it before settling on Mr Mason!
First saw them in 1977 at the Top Rank Club Sheffield "amazing gig" and "amazing times" the thing I remember most is that the band came and stood a few feet away from me and my mates so they could watch the support act . I can always picture Dave singing along to Sonic Reducer by The Dead Boys. 34 years ago oh happy memories oh happy days & RIP Stiv
I'm sorry to say I must agree. They lost it in the 80s with the goth crap. Those who weren't around early enough might not fully understand why we would think this though.
The Damned were a great band, especially their first album from which New Rose is taken. Brian James was the guitarist and main songwriter, he's very underrated as both, & left very soon. He then started The Lords Of The New Church with Stiv Bators (Dead Boys), Dave Treganna (Sham 69) & Nick Turner (Barracudas). They were the first punk supergroup & a sort of Goth Stooges/New York Dolls. Check them out!
Saw the Damned over 30 times, was anybody in peterbourgh around 85,when capt sensible, sat on edge of stage naked playing the pink panther tune?? when on for 45mins,till they got kicked off? QUALITY!!! tha Damned are the bollox, the best example of early 80s punk
Best punk record bar none. Best intro bar none, best drumming bar none and best lyrics and singing bar none. Actually my fave all time record bar none.
The Damned have always been there inspiring a lot of groups through the decades, or as Rat once said " the decay-ds". Yes they rock whether punk or rock or both at heart - they are just Damned good, see'em live too and your estimation will just go up further.
Great song from these guys, one of my favourites. it was also 'produced', along with the LP, by Nick Mason, the drummer from Pink Floyd. They were fans of Syd Barrett/early Floyd and also of The Stooges, no surprise there! i'm sure Brian James went on tour with Iggy Pop at some stage also as his guitarist, in the late 70's?
@razielblack13 Definitely. My punk collection is huge but this ranks in the top 6 at the very least. Best intro for sure. Rat Scabies is excellent!! Only got to see them once in 1978 and D.V. jumped into the crowd. Heady days!! :)
What a bummer... i have just crossed all of Rome (and more) to see the band at the Black Out (!) Club... and was met witha a crappy little note on a gate saying "The Damned have called off their Italian Tour." What the hell happened, boys?!!!
Chris Miller aka Rat Scabies-was at the same secondary school as me (Elliott, Putney London),although two years above. I never met him. Yes I do like The Damned.
Here mate I'm 25 and I HATE THE FUCKING XFACTOR AND ITS SHITE. I like old punk, goth and indie whilst my brother like 1950s rock n roll and 1940s swing. I've also met younger fowk who are going out bying vinyl and keeping good music alive. Hope's not lost :)
@trapadoored tottaly agree. except for that whats left of gus n roses sucks part. the band that calls itself guns n roses now adays sucks, but the other original members went on to make great stuff. if you like the spaghetti incident check out duffs band loaded. he did most of the vocals on that album.

thanks 7 ages of rock for introducing me to this song. I'm a metal guy at heart, but this rocks!
One of the first songs which turned me onto punk in the late 70s along with the Ramones, Patti Smith and a few others.
Such a great song made even better by so many lush photos... especially 0:37!
