Without The Damned life would be dull as a murky pond with rubbish in it. I seriously cannot constrain myself at their gigs and anyone looking at the top video will see why. They are the best band of all time ever and always and thank god they are still going strong. Am mightily glad they're not too big though as it always feels such a privilidge seeing them at relatively intimate venues with a nicely sized mosh pit. Ace to find there are others here who think the same. huzzah for the damned!
OMG-The ORIGINAL Damned line up!! James/Sensible/Vanian/Scabies! Thanks to whoever posted this. Been a fan all my life but never thought I would get to see this line up ever!! Respect!!!!x
I know Dave's voice has grown technically over the years, but this is honestly such a good performance. All those vowel modifications hes doing here fit the punk genre, as a whole, so well
Neat Neat Neat was one of the first punk songs that he ever heard- it sounded like a fight (one of his favourite pastimes at that time), and it changed his life. As he said in the interview, "Before punk, there was nothing."
Best footage of Brian James I've ever seen, even if the director preferred to focus on Cap'n. You'd never know to look at his stage demeanor that he wrote the entirety of their first two albums. Love the tempo too, must have been shortly before James left the group.
gloubloux, I am glad you explained what you "feel" when you listen to Punk. That is very important. I was 13 when Punk started and I was already in love with the more hippie type of bands like The Beatles and all the stuff from the early 70s. The problem is that I tend to associate Punk with Margaret Thatcher. I know this sounds crazy but she was the Prime Minister at that time and it appeared as a dark time in history... LOL... BTW, Nothing wrong with being antisocial from time to time;)
I love the Damned, the Adicts, the Misfits, the Sex Pistols, the Dead Kennedys, the Ramones, the Clash, the Circlejerks, as well as new punk bands like Rancid and NOFX.
This is a band who spawned from a London covered with trash because the trashmen striked, the flat lifts stunk of piss, this was the final nail in the coffin for UK hippies. Even if they were still floating about in 77 they were hiding by the time this was broadcast. Some of the best footage on youtube. I wish everyone posted better quality vids.
while i was watching these bands in 77,i found that the damned were better players than the clash or the pistols, but remember, each band were different to each other.
Does it matter what The Damned where ??? They defy labels and continue to do so !! In my opinion they're just the best Band that ever existed and always will be !!
Your right mate !! What about Roy orbison - he was the first goth for me ! Vanian 's a big fan of he's. The Damned are just the best rock group ever. Brian james's guitar just ignited !
Great band, way better than the Pistols, but they were bloody good too. At the 1st anniversary gig at the old Marquee club in 1977 and kept one mint free single, Stretcher case/Sick of being sick, sorry I frisbeed the others like everyone else did you should have been there. They were a really nice bunch of blokes too. Anyone remember Vanian and his partners stall at the old Kensington indoor market? What was the market called? It was right by High st Ken tube.
@kabulpete - so why did legs McNeil choose Lou Reed to grace the cover of Punk Magazine Vol1, No.1? Punk would have never happened without bands like VU, Stooges, MC5, Suicide and NY Dolls, among others who laid the groundwork.
Neat Neat Neat - The Damned [London, England] - 1977 - "AMG Pick. Captain Sensible's purring snarl of a bass line kicks it off and then the whole band cranks it and is gone. ...became just as well-known a punk anthem for the band and the U.K. scene as a whole. Brian James (UK punk rock guitarist) penned song. - Damned Damned Damned [30th Anniversary Expanded Edition] (Castle US) (Disc 1)-2007. NOTE: Just get the single CD version and you won't be missing much.
????? Yes I know he was on the drums most of the time but he did leave around this period just after Music for Pleasure was recorded. They were then joined briefley by Dave Berk and then John Moss. Having followed the Damned for years and being a drummer myself ( Rat being my drumming model ) it doesn't sound quite like Rat here could be wrong but ???
"No better than a YUPPIE!!"???? My dear westeh, I may be many things, but I am certainly not a yuppie lol!! Nor have I sold out. But, agreed, I am not Rollins. I am me. We can't all be Rollins. Are you/will you be a Rollins? Whatever, if you turn out to be a yuppie, would you lend me a couple of thousand? Have a great evening! :)
You must have caught them on a bad day as they are one of the friendliest and most helpful bands in the country. Plus how can a band that were there from the beginning be less Punk unless you have a very narrow view of What "Punk" is supposed to be or was . I'd hate to see what you think of The Slits or Subway Sect or Magazine :)
Like the Damned but my two cents on earliest punk: Check out The Kinks "All Day and All of the Night" from 1964. The opening chords sound more like 1976-7 punk to me than "My Generation." The Kinks punched holes in their amplifier with a knitting needle, cool.
the artists of today like the white stripes love the gun club and the cramps which i am sure youve never heard of them. redd hott chile peppers love bands like x ,fear ,circle jerk ,and the adolecents which i am sure you never heard of any of those bands the damned happen to be one of the best bands to see live very original great vocals and fun to watch. you really blew it when you compared the likes of rush with the talented keith moon ( creative powerful drummer original) NO COMPARISON
@bantyeggses Ya know who the first punk band were then ??? THE STONES ... they influenced all of them. It was thier attitude, plus all original punk was, was speeded up aggressively played rhythm n blues !! Even Brian James said that !
Hi degausser505, Oh that was not a reasoned argumentation process lol! I just happen not to like reformed bands. That's why although I saw Zeppelin, Floyd, and others at the time I haven't seen them reformed and playing to top up their bank accounts. I prefer to remember them as their best. So concerning me personally, my songwriting has changed to reflect change in me and I prefer to live how I think. My rebellious nature expresses itself in other ways, that's all. :)
Without The Damned life would be dull as a murky pond with rubbish in it.

This is just the best !! Best rock n Roll tune ever and the best version I've ever heard !!
Let's face The Damned are the Best band ever to existed !

The Damned were the best punk band by a country mile !
OMG-The ORIGINAL Damned line up!! James/Sensible/Vanian/Scabies!

Neat Neat Neat was one of the first punk songs that he ever heard- it sounded like a fight (one of his favourite pastimes at that time), and it changed his life. As he said in the interview, "Before punk, there was nothing."

My bus driver recommended this band to me...and they kick ass! so I fave this
Best footage of Brian James I've ever seen, even if the director preferred to focus on Cap'n. You'd never know to look at his stage demeanor that he wrote the entirety of their first two albums. Love the tempo too, must have been shortly before James left the group.
Great Band !!!!
Also seeing them tonight at Hammersmith - cant wait!

Amazing, I wish this was my generation.
Such an awesome rock song
I wish someone would upload "Fan Club" and other songs from that great 1st Damned LP, when Brian James was still their songwriter & guitarist.
They're playing the Wickerman festival in Dumfies And Galloway this year :-) Another great Punk act to tick of my list XD
Both are damn good.
Forget the discussion about "first punk band"-better say: THIS was the first PUNK-Band I`ve heard...
I had to find it and check it out - Craig Ferguson mentions it in his book "America on Purpose". I'm a Craig Ferguson fan.
brian james...legend
while i was watching these bands in 77,i found that the damned were better players than the clash or the pistols, but remember, each band were different to each other.

I don't know anyone who listens to the Damned. Sucks for them! They're one of my favorite bands.
im 14, own Damned but not forgotten, and noticed my fav. song isnt on it. You must understand my predicament.
They were also the first punk band ever to release an album. They beat the Pistols by about 6 months.

Your right mate !! What about Roy orbison - he was the first goth for me ! Vanian 's a big fan of he's. The Damned are just the best rock group ever. Brian james's guitar just ignited !
Brian James, YUM!
nothing beats the original lineup.
November 2005, 11 years and 9 months ago, True Crime: New York City, Activision, PlayStation 2, Xbox, & Gamecube
my liking of the actual band brought me here

@kabulpete - so why did legs McNeil choose Lou Reed to grace the cover of Punk Magazine Vol1, No.1?

You win the RUclips.

Couldn't of said that better myself.
I'm here because of Dave Vanian...which seems much more plausible considering he's someone actually in the video....just sayin' ^^
Epic =)

CAPTAIN is the leader...
Hardcore is usually an American style. These guys and wire. were the British equivalent.
