    Oathsworn appears inspired by: Conan (energy cubes) + Time Stories (time mechanic/story skill checks) + Gloomhaven (story/game mechanic/more random AI)
    ATO appears inspired by: KDM (combat mechanics, more combat AI) + 7th Continent (journey) + Middara (story, tech) + Fantasy Flight LCGs (doom based story)
    Both are great pedigrees. And both introduce their own unique mechanics.
    Personally I think I'll go with ATO as it has more depth. Oathsworn has more different mechanics but more streamlined.

  • @Kryptonite_V

    Good video - again.
    I instantly backed AT:O and haven't regretted it over the campaign. For me, the most important difference which kept me from backing Oathsworn, is the sheer novelty and Innovation present in AT:O. Oathsworn is more like the last in a line, the perfected modern campaign-boardgame, but it is more refined than innovative. It looks generic, almost cliched, I wouldn't have been surprised if it was "The Dark Eye Boardgame" or "Pathfinder Boardgame" or some such. I have played Gloomhaven, I have backed several campaign board games since then, i.e. Machina Arcana, Tainted Grail, Etherfields, The Isofarian Guard, AT:O. Lots of others I passed on because they seemed too similar to the fanatsy genre standard.
    But I agree that Oathsworn looks really good!
    I'm super hyped for AT:O though. The amazing story, the escalating conflict, the Greek setting... can't wait! (okay, I'll have all the other games mentioned above soon to keep me until then!).

      Great points indeed! I agree with yoru take on "last line" bit - to me, Oathsworn is "the best version of ___" I've seen. Seen plenty of giant rats but OMG the BroodMother is the best I've seen. I've seen a lot of barbarians but OMG that exile is utterly fantastic. There are some pretty good lesser seen stuff too like the bird dude and such which is also super appreciated.
      Not much beats sci-fi post-apocalyptic ancient Greece though :D

    • @jensriisomschultz3809
      @jensriisomschultz3809 4 года назад +1

      AT:O combat is not innovative. Its a copy of KDM combat. I know it's not popular to say because "its inspiration"... but I really hope Adam Poots was at least approached by the AT:O team and asked "do you mind if we make a scifi greek version of your game?"

    • @TheKingofAverage
      @TheKingofAverage  4 года назад +3

      @@jensriisomschultz3809 says the guy who hasn't played it :P
      Seriously though I don't get it. Oathsworn has exploding dice, that's not new. Bloodrage has drafting, that's not new. Descent has symbols on dice for powers, that's not new, KD:M has miniature movement, equipment cards, to-hit and to-wound dice rolls and those aren't new either.
      I'm quite thankful that the industry isn't chained to never iterating in mechanics or we'd get nowhere :)

    • @Kryptonite_V
      @Kryptonite_V 4 года назад +1

      @@jensriisomschultz3809 Thank you for pointing that out. I must admit I haven't played KD:M (nor AT:O yet). But from what I've read about it, there are similarities, like the three levels of AI cards and hit zones. But are there equivalences to Kratos points (team combo mechanics), the Triskelion (balance of danger/risk) in KD:M?
      The gameplay mechanics in AT:O seem to fit the theme of cinematic escalating action, power and stakes, in combat as well as storyline.

      I'm in the same spot PCPandemic. I was honestly more excited for OID a few months ago but the more I watched the flatter it all felt. I don't get the sense of OTI being grittier or on a more personal level with the characters and do find ATO both more on the epic level but also with a huge amount of background development on the character level. However, KiA has played both and I do respect and value his thoughts and wonder if I'm working with too little information.

      Honestly i think Oathsworn benefits from being streamlined to a certain decree. To me it's the fun of combat , rolling all those dice and discovering whether you made that big hit or not. Suits well into the aspect of being a paid for hire monster hunting machine. That said , i backed both and on a personal note, am probably looking forward more to ATO then Oathsworn. Then again i'm very excited to play ATO solo or with just one more, whilst for Oathsworn , i'm eyeing that good number four. PS if executed right , then i'll love the boss climbing mechanic in ATO and the armory pack of Oathsworn.

    • @TheKingofAverage
      @TheKingofAverage  4 года назад +5

      Good points! In the end we're all working with just the super first part of these games. Chapter 1 of Oathsworn for instance is less than 1/20th of the full game O.o
      I will say that playing Oathsworn the first time, versus the 4th time is a huge difference in how you play. The game systems are very nuanced and new players will typically just play as many cards that they can while more seasoned players actually hold back to plan things in the future. I've talked a lot about those strategies in various threads on BGG if you're interested but yeah, watching a first time player play Oathsworn is almost maddening to me lol. It's like watching one of my young children play a video game haha.
      That being said, as you can tell from the video they are very different games and will appeal for different reasons to different people. I can totally see what PCPandemic is talking about and agree, if you want a ton of GAME as in more stuff to do then AT:O is definitely it. But not everyone is okay with the heavy 50/50 split. You spend much more time out of battle than you do in Oathsworn and so lots of people might like the more combat focus of Oathsworn, especially with their iron man, hardcore and challenge modes.

    I backed both. I was hoping Oathsworn had a deeper legacy or world building mechanic. But guess not. Regardless, im loving how the Oathsworn developers are focused on ease of play or quality of life function for the players. Ever since playing Gloomhaven, I figured out that a great game barely comes out on the table if it takes massive amount of time to setup and a massive amount of components laying about.

    • @TheKingofAverage
      @TheKingofAverage  4 года назад +1

      Completely agreed. There are some games we've picked and then decided against for setup time alone.
      As for how "twisted" the tale gets, we've only played Chapter 1 which is less than 1/20th of the game so it's hard to really gauge how much it's twist and turn. Will have to wait for the final review for that :)

I am pretty hard core into AT:O and Oath hasn't really peaked my interest as much even though it sounds like something I would be much more into with a darker, grittier story. Reading through the parts of the story I have one across I didn't get that sense but your video has convinced me to give it another look. They both look like incredible games and I am excited to see how the community embrases them. Loving the music at the end too!

      Glad I could help Heath! Considering this is a 10 minute video just going over the high level differences it's safe to say that 1 might appeal more than another to people as they honestly aren't all that comparable. It also means it's safe to have both in a collection as they satisfy different needs for a gaming group.
      Really glad to hear you like the music! I sometimes worry about having "bold" music but felt this fits the epic/adventurous tone of these games quite well :)

    For me, I will probably paly more solo and provably it would fit better the Oathsworn, but for this types of games, I don't like to much to depend on luck while rolling the dices and basically not having a lot of control of the situation, so for me is a drawback. Otherthing the price of Oathsworn seems to be a lot related to the miniatures and not the complexity of the game. For me, miniatures are in the plus/bonus side, if has cool if not ok. Because of all of this, I think I will stick to AT: O.
    What do you think based on what I said?

    • @TheKingofAverage

      I say go for it! Both are soloable (with Oathsworn being extremely soloable by really anyone). AT:O works really well since each character only has 2 actions to take. Combined with the co-op mechanics you can kind of view it as the ability to make 4-8 actions on your turn :) The co-op stuff also helps you have a bit more mitigation from randomness (helping ensure you land a hit for instance).

      The King of Average Which combat system do you prefer? And how highly would you rank that of OID compared to other similar games? On a completely different note: did you find in OID there was much handling of the coins? I’m trying to think how much value getting those coins would really bring. My impression is one doesn’t handle the coins much as there’s no bartering and the buying gear session only happens once per chapter.

    • @TheKingofAverage
      @TheKingofAverage  4 года назад +2

      The combat is what splits off to completely different comparison wise. Oathsworn has the card stuff that I always find myself enjoying and AT:O has the co-op tokens which makes it fun as well. I think for me when it comes down to strict combat only view of it I enjoyed AT:O's stuff. Neither are even close to bad of course.
      As for the coins, you do handle them fairly often. You gain or pay some stuff at least a few times during the chapter. One interesting point is your money can be pooled together, but whatever you gain you control. So when paying someone or buying something you often need to discuss with everyone and come to an agreement. It's kind of your "stake" in the matter.

    Nice video! I was looking around for a comparison and this was good.
    For me the story is perhaps the most important part in a game like this. How well written and interesting it is, so I just have to continue to play the game so I get to know how the story ends!
    Based on what you’ve played so far, which one of these do you feel is the better in terms of well written story?

    • @TheKingofAverage
      @TheKingofAverage  4 года назад

      I'm not sure I'm a great expert on that front. I'm more in tune with overall story beats vs. how well written something is, but what I can say, beyond their scope and general focus (AT:O on events, Oathsworn on location) is neither was full of typos or badly worded sentences.
      I think beyond the theme being totally different, having James Cosmo read it like an audio book (complete with changing his voice/speech pattern to match the character speaking) is a much different experience than reading it out loud yourself such as in AT:O. AT:O also interrupts you more with decisions which could be a pro or a con depending on your personal tastes.

    • @teoea
      @teoea 4 года назад

      Thank you for your thoughts and time! :) That voice narrative by James Cosmo seems really nice and is a big plus for Oathsworn. I get the impression that Oathsworn has a more smooth continuous journey, which could be preferable for my wife and me.

      A tough pickle for sure. Here's my take from what you said:
      You want Aeon Trespass: Odyssey. Both have solid combat but limiting to 2 actions per turn really helps AT:O out, along with more standard square space movement. It has crafting/building whereas Oathsworn doesn't, and both have wonderful art and a branching story/lore.

      Oathsworn is easier to teach and learn but AT:O has a whole tutorial where it slowly introduces you to everything which is fantastic. So learning isn't an issue for either. But beginning players might be better suited for Oathsworn because at the end of the day it's just more straightforward. AT:O has a LOT of stuff and if you are okay with that (or yearn for it) then that's a good option, but most beginning board game players won't want to dive into the deep end of the pool right away :P

    Very shallow comparison. Missing is setup tear down time shelf and table footprint, narration quality, and session duration.
    I didn’t back AT:O because the combat and triskelion seemed super convoluted and I couldn’t wrap my head around them. I also didn’t like the art on the gear- too much mint works on white background, not in theme with the alternative mythology era; if anything marble veins or something should be present. Another argument was that the box is 60cm wide and weight is 10kg.
    O:D otoh is a bit smaller and more compartmentalized, you either run around 1 city, or run around on a combat grid.
    In short, ATO offers more exploration and O:D offers more text that doesn’t matter since the plot points are fixed. Combat is innovative in both.
    I backed O:D for $1, and won’t likely back either but instead wait for the second edition which given the enormous hype and sales figures are bound to come.

      Both seem to be story-driven campaign games where choices are important and you discover the world as you play and make choices. Both are fairly big games with a similar mixed focus on miniatures but also cards, boards, tokens, etc. Some people see things in terms of differences more, and others see things in terms of similarities more. While the themes and scale seem to be poles apart, both are otherwise going to appeal to a certain kind of gamer and scratch similar itches, I think.
      But if you don't see the similarities as strongly, how about comparing them simply because they're both big, expensive kickstarters that have been featured heavily on the channel, have aroused a lot of interest on the channel, and right now is when a lot of people are having to make some tough decisions about what to back? Comparing any two similar-sized kickstarters, even without any major similarities, seems pretty valid to me. The fact that both games are big, story-driven-with-combat miniature games just makes it all the more valid, doesn't it? :)
