Thank you for giving an HONEST assessment of Wilmington. I lived there for two and a half years and this is the most honest review of what the town is actually like.
Thanks for the feedback man, I really appreciate it! An honest assessment is exactly what I was going for- I really do love living here but I'm not a fan of the fluff videos that pretend there are zero cons to living in a beach town.
Thanks for making this video. As a photographer and drone pilot who is gonna move to Wilmington, I was really excited to see drone footage of the area. Nice job!
Thank you! You'll love shooting here, there are a multitude of different landscapes to choose from and they're constantly changing from the tides and storms. Good luck with the move, if you have any questions about the area feel free to reach out!
my family and i live in phoenix, az but lived in raleigh for a year and visited wilmington. we are definitely going to save up to buy a house there within the next few years. it was amazing and we loved it.
I moved to Wilmington after a long research, I was not disappointed because the shortcomings I already knew about were the same, no walking paths nor crossing lights for walkers, you must own a car or you will never get anywhere, people are chill except on the highway crazy driving and speeding everywhere. the traffic is not bad yet. I can't live here permanently, but it's a nice break before finding my last resort.
No walking paths or crossing lights for walkers? Hmm. I was under the impression Wilmington was more walkable/bikeable. I’ve never been but was hoping to relocate there.
@@rainsoundsasmr4187 it's kinda rough for bikers, cars here don't stop for anyone, there is one path on military cutoff but on marker Street which is a major road there is none unfortunately
There are quite a few bike paths and greenways throughout town but you do have to cross major roadways in spots. I love biking around town but it's definitely a little bit sketchy at times with traffic. Downtown Wilmington is also very walkable once you get down there. @@rainsoundsasmr4187
A car is definitely a necessity if you want to have access to all parts of town. The lack of public transport here is one of the downfalls of Wilmington that also contributes to the growing traffic issues. Hopefully they figure out a solution before traffic gets too much worse. Thanks for watching!
Former ECU frat grad here. I love Wilmington so much and have so many friends from high school that live in town. I used to spend all summer there. My family has a house in Brunswick county so anytime I visit we make sure to drive to Wilmy for the day and go to Dave’s hot chicken. My sister went to college there as well, I think you very well captured what life is like down there.
@@annie68164 I found Wilmington to be a very nice place to visit and I feel it would be quite safe for you and your son. I enjoyed the riverwalk, beach, and went to a live show.
Traffic isn't bad at all compared to almost every major city in North Carolina. I do agree that the bug situation definitely isn't ideal here haha. Thanks for watching!
I personally think that living slightly more inland is better than living directly in the city. Like up near the Burgaw area because housing is pretty damn cheap and its still only like a 20-30 minute drive to downtown wilmington
I've helped several clients purchase homes in both Burgaw and Rocky Point and they've all loved living out there! If you're looking for country living with nearby city access it's definitely a great option. Thanks for watching!
Allergy season here doesn't bother me but I think we do have a stronger season here than what is typically seen in most northern states. Thanks for watching!
Just to clarify. Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach, Kure Beach and Fort Fisher are not in Wilmington. They are around Wilmington but not in the city limits. They are in New Hanover co where Wilmington is the biggest city.
Darling it's hot as hell most of the time we ain't running anywhere ! Traffic is bad yea! Hurricanes well it's hurricane season in summer, rent is horrible, to damn high
I'm thinking about going to college here once I graduate next year. The only problem is that I strictly ride ebike only so im just hoping that it's not as bad as springfield ohio lol. Overall it looks beautiful and I can definitely see myself living there
It's an amazing place to do college! I have a ton of friends that either went to UNCW or Cape Fear Community College and they all loved it. If you go to UNCW and live on campus the ebike will be plenty to get you where you need to go. If you decide on CFCC, living downtown would probably make it work as long as all of your classes were at the DT location. Let me know if you have any other questions about the city!
The job market is definitely tough. One of the cons of living somewhere that a lot of people want to move to unfortunately. I've seen a pretty big influx of new job postings lately though so keep an eye out!
That museum is close to the river so it's a bit more susceptible than if you were to move farther inland. That being said, it isn't a particularly low-lying area so flooding really shouldn't be much of an issue there.
I lived in Wilmington for 25 years. I now live in Charlotte as I need to be near family as I am in my 70's and type one diabetic. My mother was from Wilmington so I have visited my entire life. Your video did capture some of the good and bad. Florence while bad as it sat on Wilmington to rain and rain was only a Cat 1. I am not sure how the area will handle a Cat 3/4/5 given the population growth, density and limited road options. I should mention that dying Memorial Bridge. The other significant problem is medical care. The local hospital is not very good. If you have a serious illness go to Durham or Chapel Hill. You mentioned entertainment. The Wilson Center seems to be the residence for elderly musicians way past their prime. It used to be that you could go to the beaches even in the summer. Now the beaches are for those who can afford to pay especially Wrightsville Beach. We all know that part of that cost is to keep certain people out which is why Wilmington city buses do not go there.
There's definitely some truth in all of that. I think we could handle a major hurricane here if it was moving fast enough but if it sits like Florence did we will definitely be in some trouble. The hospital was recently bought out by a bigger corporation, there's hope that they will invest money and make everything better but only time will tell. It is a nice convenience that Wilmington residents are only a two-hour straight shot from everything the Duke and Chapel Hill hospitals have to offer. They're also currently doing some upkeep work on the Memorial Bridge which is a pain for daily commuters but will hopefully keep it in action long-term. Thanks for watching!
The traffic. Omg. Horrendous. The heat and humidity is seriously damn near unbearable. Lived there for over 10 years and the summers are brutal. And don’t forget hurricanes. They are frequent. Every summer you will suffer through at least one. Some years four. Nah, never again.
Living in a coastal town isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I will say that there are weather-related issues that arise pretty much anywhere you choose to live in the US. Hope you enjoy where you're living now and thanks for watching!
There are a few bad apples in every city unfortunately. The cops from that 2020 incident were publicly exposed by the police department, fired, and banished from ever working public service positions again.

Sounds like a much needed robust public transit system should be built. One with trains, ferries, light rail, busses and bicycle lanes.
We are definitely well overdue for that. Thanks for watching!
I am looking at a few places, close to the Wilmington railroad museum. Is that area susceptible to hurricanes as the coastal part of Wilmington.
