I’ll make it simple for everyone. SC is Country Mouse. NC is City Mouse. Neither is bad, just different. It all depends on the lifestyle you would like to live. Just remember the reason you decided to move to the Carolinas. If you move here because your state was poorly run by the government and you have high taxes and high crime, don’t vote for the same policies that made you want to move in the first place.

The concept of mini-retirement changed my life. I'm no longer waiting for some retirement paradise when I'm 65. It helps to know how to fund the lifestyle. You know, making money while you sip that piña colada by the beach does help. I wouldn't have been able to do it otherwise.

I grew up in the Midwest, Southern Illinois. I moved to Columbus, Georgia for a couple years for grad school, which was my first welcoming to the South. Then I moved to Columbia, South Carolina. I recently moved to the Upstate area, and I've never looked. SC is for the free-spirited, and it is my home.

As someone who has lived in NC my entire life, but also as someone who has owned property in Myrtle Beach for about 20 years, I prefer the Myrtle Beach area for many reasons. The weather is better (warmer/sunnier), there are palm trees (NC beaches do not have palms), there are a lot more entertainment and activity options in Myrtle Beach than at any of the beaches in NC. Most of the beaches in NC are "sleepy". Nice if you want to get away and relax, but not somewhere I want to live full time. And as you mentioned we get hit hard by hurricanes in NC a lot because we stick out. I'd say there are more job opportunities in NC, but if that isn't an issue (retiring or working remotely), Myrtle Beach is better in my opinion!

Well....I'm close to 60 and ably able to work still; driving Class A trucks. Considering moving and staying with Ryder Trucking...if I can keep my current net pay. I like riding four-wheelers too...so I think North C, trumps South here. I don't actually care about the beach line....more than 5-10 visits a year...can't afford beach property...so, this is a moot point.
      1) Where are North Carolinas best "riding trails" of 100-200 mile runs...if they exist
      2) A person making 65K and taking home 50K...where can they find a small house...then rent out a room to augment one's income close to #1's needs please?

    • @Ezees23
      @Ezees23 2 года назад +2

@@frankfromupstateny3796 Literally, anywhere in NC. NC has much more industry than SC, and has more to do outside of simply going to the beach or hanging in a "beach area". I'd say the best trails are near the mountains, toward the Western side of NC. The beaches are on the Eastern Seaboard. You should be good to go anywhere West of Raleigh. East of Raleigh things drop off considerably - towns are smaller and there's less going on, industry-wise. Generally, if a city doesn't have a public bus system, there's not enough chances for advancement for the average person - which means there's much less money circulating in the local economy, which means a lower quality of life for the average citizen, IMO.

I'm from Pawleys Island SC and the reasons for living here are far too numerous to list in one message. But I'll share a story which sums it all up quite well. My mom and her best friend which happend to be a SC state Senators wife, were shopping at the grocery store when a man who you could easily tell was from New York because of his accent, was bitching and complaining about the lines at the check out counter. He eventually broke in line by saying, "Look unlike you people, I'm a busy person and I had to be somewhere else 10 minutes ago so, I'm just gonna get in front of the line here." The cashear started to say, "Well that's not very courteous what about..." Then he interrupterd her and started abusing her as well. Anyway everyone just went silent while he was checked out. Then when he got his groceries and headed to the exit door my mom's friend who was a polite well bred Southern lady from Charleston but also not weak a person at all went up to him, looked him in the eye and said, with a refined Southern accent, "You're not from around here are you?" Well that was all it took and even though he was obviously embarrassed but still too proud to apologise he said as he left "Well I don't give a damn what all y'all think anyway." At that point everyone was statred laughing at him which seemed to make it even worse for him. He then flipped everyone the bird and stormed out. At which point everyone in the market started cheering and applauding which he also heard as he was leaving.

Florida was my #1 choice, but lately I'm second guessing myself. I would like to live somewhere with a lot of things for the children to do, that includes museums, parks, and golf courses. My daughter plays junior golf. Crime is a big factor in my decision. For a second we thought about Naperville Illinois because they have such a low crime stats. North Carolina was on my list, but I had bad memories about living in Camp Lejeune. I found things far from each other and too cold in the winter for my liking. I live in California and retiring soon, so any southern state would be cheaper than the Bay area. I have been looking for place to call home, but every time I believe I found something I like, I dig for more information and something always throws me off. For example in Florida the property and car insurance is insane, that defeats the point of not having state tax. Naperville is too cold in the winter and some reports said that Chicago crime is moving to the suburbs and what is the point to living close to a big city when you won't enjoy it because of crime. San Diego is too expensive. Texas too hot with mega property tax. Is anyone on the same boat as I'm. North or South Carolina are the areas of my research at this point.

We are so pleased with our decision, between the housing prices skyrocketing and the mortgage rates rising, it was a fantastic decision. God wiling, in 2026, we will be living here full time. He forgot to mention a few times like no sales tax on groceries, but restaurants and fast food has a high sales tax. No fault car insurance turns me off might as well be in NJ. The roads going to the beach or mountains are good, but the side roads are like the surface of the moon. The SC state parks are the Marriott compared to NC parks. Each site in every SC parks have a water spigot and electric hookup and the electric is only $3 more for a site. Greenville has a natural waterfall and swimming downtown. Santee Cooper has the best freshwater fishing. Actually there is a lot of activities in the state to entertain any family if they take the time to research. I live in NC 5 miles from the state line for lower property taxes and gas which is actually the same as SC since they passed a new gas tax. Liability insurance is low for seniors who don't have tickets. I pay one payment for 12 months liability for 2 vehicles $385. One is 01 and the other 84 so that has to be taken into account. Charlotte- Mecklenburg area is probably best for working people. They would be close to Lake Norman and Lake Wylie, 3 hours to the beach and 2 to the mountains. If you are Democrats stay where you are.

This was his first Mn Winter and let’s just say it was a shock to him. So I’m trying to find a investment that will be are permanent home. And that maybe my adult children will appreciate it. And I am hoping for grandkid’s too. When they were young I had a cabin in Wisconsin. And lost it after a comedy errors. And I knew I would not go for going further north. I thought this would be a good compromise. My second time watching. I am learning so much. I just have to find the small coastal town and walk to the beach with my dog. The roads and the drivers are insane, 80mph isn't fast enough for some people flashing their high beams at you. I don't blame people, truth is Costs up here are so high across the board to live everyone is super busy and stressed out. Most families with children need to have both parents working, and when you have a few kids fitting everything in is just impossible sometimes. The state has everyone overworked and stressed out and their only solution seems to be legalizing recreational Marijuana and now recently "To Go Drinks" so now you can order take out and a cocktail to go along with it. These are the priorities of our leaders in the north, it's a real shame.

@@jkeelsnc I have lived in NC 50 years and 20 in SC and have several Yankee friends who have migrated down. They also have "old South" mentality, although technically its old North. Racism may be quieter (do you ever notice how some people (Yankees as well as Southerners, as well as some folks from Michigan I know) lower their voice when they talk about African Americans) ;but in reality we still have problems regardless of which part of this country you live in.

See my post above. I have Melanin in my skin (know what I mean?). SC citizens won't hide the fact that they're good ole' boys, K*K members, or just don't like "those people". Coming from NC, the dislike and outright hate is palpable, IMO. SC is a "Sundown State".

In my opinion, the absolute 2 most important things that you don't mention are politics and religion. Everything you talk about is important and I appreciate it, but in the times we're living in, I care WAY more about being in a highly Christian and conservative, patriotic place rather than what sports events might be going on.

I’ve done a lot of research on this and obviously it all depends on your personal situation. Me and my wife love SC but Florida is a better option and here’s why- You can get the same weather by moving to the Panhandle. They are only around 5 degrees warmer on average compared to SC. Places like Pensacola, Destin, Santa Rosa Beach are good options. Plus property taxes are low and they do not tax pensions or SS. Plus there’s no state income tax. Plus you have 3 airports close by that you could fly into if you’re traveling a lot. Also if you want a house close to the beach, like within 6 blocks I think there’s more to choose from in the Panhandle. Just things to think about.

You made all good and valid points. Thanks for watching and commenting! Over the past few years the trend for retirees to move south to Florida. But there has been a significant shift in the number of phone calls and emails into our real estate office from people who are leaving Florida and moving to Myrtle Beach SC. The #1 complaint from Floridians moving out of Florida, is super high insurance costs or not being able to get insurance at all at any cost. #2 complaint from Floridians moving out of Florida, is they are tired of all the hurricanes. #3 complaint from Floridians moving out of Florida, is the ridiculous crazy traffic. I love Florida and have many family members who live there and I love visiting, but I appreciate all we have when I come back home to Myrtle Beach SC.

I found this super informational. Definitely gave a like and Sub. I am from (south) New Jersey near cape may and looking to the Carolina's. I still want a beach life but I also want to experience something different out of my comfort zone like mountains and from what I understand, nice people/neighbors. Im younger and hold position in the academia world so I'm looking to see where I would best fit. My daughter is 1 year old and I just dread her growing up here like I did.. I want her to have better. My fiance and I are planning a trip but have no idea where to start. We just know we are ready for a change!

Cape May was a wonderful place to live in '73 and 74. I was stationed in the Coast Guard. I loved south Jersey. Of course I can't comment on Cape May now. There are awesome mountains in upstate NY, Vermont, New Hampshire, et.al. In some ways I think they are more beautiful and interesting than our NC mountains.

Raleigh NC is a very nice city! And is away from almost all hurricanes. Both NC and SC get hit with hurricanes on the coast. SC seems more laid backed, hotter in summer. Raleigh NC has landscaping more like PA not as a dessert feel as SC. I like NC.

Charlestown And Savannah will remind you of the beauty of Cape May NJ. Victorian ginger bread houses, beautiful Charlestown. But they got hit by a hurricane so if you don't mind the threat of hurricanes and leaving your house if one comes then it's a wonderful place to live. Outer banks are lovely but it gets hit once in a while also. Better to live in land and go to the coast for vacation.
