I see you’re interested to know more of them and have lots of questions as to why they’re doing what they’re doing now, why they only got the wins recently and the reception of Korean when they debuted with this concept.
I believe majority of your questions will be answered in this video below. You may watch this off screen if you don’t want to react to it but it’s definitely a must watch for those intrigued by the very existence of Dreamcatcher

Deja Vu is a masterpiece for me personally. Everything about it is perfect for me. While the rest have explained many from your questions, I'll add a bit here.
They knew the concept for Dreamcatcher and were skeptical and feared they won't make it. Even JiU tried her best to train her vocal colour to fit the rock infused songs.
From what I remember, Siyeon liked Babymetal, it's old info, not sure if she still does. Dami listens to punk rock songs. There's actually a couple of videos uploaded where Siyeon, JiU and Yoohyeon in the vehicle jamming to rock songs in Siyeon's playlist, and it included Babymetal.
Here's a fun fact: Siyeon was a vocalist for a rock band for a few years during her school years.
That's why when she goes into her high powerful notes, she gives of this powerful rock fitting vocals.

jiu said that they don't have reference to this concept, so its pretty hard at beginning. tho SIYEON used to be on rock band, she said it was the kind of music she wanna pursue(she don't like minx cute concept) siyeon said its hurtful when people said they should change concept if they want a win, saying its not true.(she want to win with this concept)

Deja Vu is nothing short of a masterpiece. It is a beautiful, fragile ballad that kicks your teeth down your throat in the chorus. It is extra difficult to sort out, because it tells the story from two perspectives. You know how even evil people think they are the good guys? This is reflected here. One perspective is Yoohyeon's, who gets corrupted right in the beginning. She thinks JiU is bad (does not want to share power) and backstabs her and kills, imprisons or banishes the other members so that she can rule alone. The other perspective is reality, where we can see JiU be kind to Yoohyeon, but she gets killed for it. It's not exactly a Deja Vu per definition, but I believe this is a commentary on the different perspectives people can have about the same event. The lyrics seem to hint at an abusive relationship, where there are usually two perspectives as well, and the abuser finds excuses to justify their actions.

  • @deen4305
    @deen4305 2 года назад +9

    Okay long comment alert.
They did know actually. They'd started as full blown bubble pop as Minx (an era that Siyeon actively despises, the company actually banned questions relating to Minx during a recent reddit AMA). As for liking the music yes, JiU is a fan of babymetal, Yoohyeon and Siyeon went to a One Ok Rock concert in Japan together and Siyeon has cited Warlock as a favorite and she includes Taka (the singer of One Ok Rock) as one of her idols (she does incorporate a lot of j-rock vocal flairs like the guitar riff highnotes like she did in Tension). Siyeon was also a lead singer in her high school rock band so she said their rock sound was like going back to her roots. SuA also enjoys rock and Dami's productions have some kind of rock vibe to them (new days, Beauty Full etc). In the early years of Deukae only Siyeon could pull off rock vocals, now though all the girls have adjusted their voices.
Yea SuA is super stable but from what I've seen most excellent main dancers are because of the sheer core strength they have but SuA is a jack of all trades in the group. Siyeon and SuA's stability is unmatched, I don't know anyone else who can do a high kick during a high note (SuA) and a super high belt during a barrel roll (Siyeon).
Dami's raps actually started fitting in better once they added beat switches and hip hop/ break beat elements. I think they had a hard time fully incorporating Dami, Gahyeon and Handong's vocal colours into the titles at first but once they settled into the "fusion" side of their sound they were able to incorporate them better and give them more parts. Honestly Dami's raps and vocals shine the most in b-sides due to the variety of genres they dabble in.
Yoohyeon hyperspecializes in airy- jazz and pop vocals so she's usually breathier and not 'super' stable in lives and she also gets nervous easily but give that girl a stationary mic and she'll scat her way into your heart.
As for the storyline, its about betrayal. My interpretation: JiU was the benevolent queen, Yooh her right hand man who backstabbed her due to becoming power hungry, she also got rid of everyone else when they turned on her, SuA exiled (gate closing behind her), Gahyeon (poisoned?? very hamlet-esque to be in a garden) and Siyeon (the explosion and curtains burning down) assassinated, Handong either imprisoned or executed (surrounded by guards like she's a prisoner) and Dami is either prisoner or a ghost (seems more like a ghost with a foreboding warning like in Hamlet). Yoohyeon then begins to deal with the guilt by convincing herself that she was the victim and she did what needed to be done and begins to believe that it was actually JiU who turned on her which is what we see in the beginning. So anything with Yooh in the pretty dress and JiU in the black outfit happens later in Yooh's mind and everything with JiU in the pink dress and Yooh in the black dress happened before which is why we see the reality i.e., Yoohyeon in a black dress on the throne smirking evilly in the ending, hence the Deja Vu.

They debuted in 2014 with typical korean pop music as Minx (only 5 members), but redebuted as 7 (Handong, Gahyeon) in 2017 with this rock sound, they were afraid for sure to flop but they stuck with it and never regretted it.

  • @CrappycrapCrappy
    @CrappycrapCrappy 2 года назад +8

To add to what most people commented already on MINX being the OG Dreamcatcher, MINX era was a bit of a dark phase in the lives of the original five members. Most of them hated the MINX concept and felt hopeless cause they flopped hard, and even thought of completely giving up on the kpop career entirely. So it is safe to say that to rebrand as Dreamcatcher with a fusion genre literally unknown to kpop at that time and a dark concept for a girl group also literally unknown at that time, is a damn HUGE risk but paid of really well due to their determination. This is why their first win was such a milestone cause even on interviews in the past, people tell them that if they want to win in kpop they should change their genre and that actually hurt the members.

    • @kamreacts4009
      @kamreacts4009  2 года назад +7

I'm glad they didn't give up. The members, the management, the label, all of them didn't give up and even gave the girls another shot by changing group name and concept. It makes me respect their label a lot actually. It is much more common for groups to disband if they can't find success within the first year or two.

  • @veen-a2092

when they re-debute they were told so and they really thought it was going to flop but they tapped a specific nieche in the music world and gain loyal fans slowly, InSomnia are known to be ride or die fans while most fandoms might dropped their pop-group they support after a more popular group debute or anything else really Dreamcathchers' OG fans are very loyal from what I can see, so they not only break the stereotype image of pop-idol,image,music they also seem to break the "typical netizen fan" stereotype as well. All I can say is they're very unique even within the kpop group itself they don't really care about "idol-image" they would eat a LOT and have zero filter whatsoever and their music is just so different it takes sounds and inspiration from some genres and they create this really unique sound that belongs to they themselves in a way that was actually how kpop used to be before it goes world wide and companies would rather produce genreic pop songs to gain those radio points these days

as other somnias has mentioned they debuted as 5 member gg in 2014, with a typical bubblegum pop cute concept, but they were unsuccessful(since they debuted in an era with so many other top groups such as gfriend, mamamoo, red velvet and many more- they didnt stand out) so disbanded however their CEO is very nice so with his team came up with the idea to re-debut the girls with 2 new members added: Handong and Gahyeon, they brought the legendary leez and ollounder who since thedreamcatcher debut has produced 95% of their songs. Jiu has mentioned she is fan of baby metal and Siyeon has also mentioned she is big fan of j-rock such as One Ok Rock(fun fact, siyeon was the vocalist for her high school band)
when they found out they were debuting with the rock concept they have mentioned how nervous they were and as you mentioned they were worried they would flop since rock clearly isnt mainstream in Korean domestically. However, they didnt give up so over the years they are now named the 'stair' idols, who has grown and gained more fans each comeback. thanks for reaction!

Some would say their rock concept was Siyeon's idea (since she is a former rock band vocalist during her school years) but from what I read, their CEO is a huge fan of japanese music that he even once organized a concert for a legendary j-rock band, X Japan in South Korea. There's an article about it on reddit

yes, the fact is they once debuted as cute girl group called MINX. But, unfortunately they got disbanded. Then, they redebuted as DREAMCATCHER, at first they're not even sure with the genre. But, after hearing songs by multiple times, they liked it so much. And, they finally found their own style and genre. STAN TALENT STAN DREAMCATCHER

Hey Andy, thanks for another DC reaction! I see you've decided to take my advice from your previous videos.
So when the girls originally debuted as Minx, they were making typical pop music that everyone was making in 2015. However, because of this, it was hard for them to standout from the numerous groups that were debuting with this concept. Ultimately, their company decided to rebrand them and try something different. While success wasn't immediate, they were doing better and better with every comeback. Now, whenever a song with a rock sound comes out, or a girl group debuts with a dark concept, the response is almost always "this reminds me of Dreamcatcher". They literally carved their own path in kpop.
I know some of the members expressed that they do like rock music and rock artists, I'm not sure its a resounding "yes" from them all. For instance, i know Yoohyeon really likes American pop and r&b music.
As for guide recommendations, i would suggest the following:
dreamwolfie's "who are they? Dreamcatcher guide 2021". -this guide is a great introduction to each member.
Additionally, i would suggest Insomnicsy's "This is (member)" series. Kit does a great job of showing off each members unique personalities.
Lastly, i would recommend mera's "Dodging Disbandment and other extreme sports: a history of Dreamcatcher". This video will help you understand DCs history.
    good luck!

Hi~! Dreamcatcher was Minx before they were Dreamcatcher, they had a cutesy concept. Unfortunately, the group wasn't really getting much attention, so the company decided to rebrand the group into Dreamcatcher and changed the concept, brought Gahyeon and Handong, and producers and a lot more. They debuted as dreamcatcher with the song "Chase Me" which is like a rock-flavored pop, especially J-Rock. They really did go to another level of transforming their concept.
Edit: About the guide: I think the latest one is Dreamworld's "2022 Dreamcatcher" guide, just search it, I don't know how links interact with youtube comments, I'm sorry. You could also use Dreamwolfie's 2021 Dreamcatcher guide, it's a little bit shorter. Let's see if other Somnias could offer other options. After guide, if you wanna get to know them a little bit more, Insomnicsy's "This Is" series is a big help, each video is around 7mins long, each of the members has one video + another one for the whole group.
EditEdit: Be careful of spoilers if you wanna watch a guide, unless of course if you don't really care much about spoiling yourself. Haha~!

Ok. Since this song is for Kings Raid, the song follows the story of the two main people of the main party. They were tasked with killing the Demon King....And after much toil they manage to do so....But were unaware that killing him would mean the person who does will be cursed to become the next demon king. The main character is the one who dies to become the next DK, so his lover will not allow him to do so alone. So she becomes a demon as well, and they wait together for their friends to find a cure for them.
In the video, the girls imagined a kingdom ruled by all of them with JiU as the leader. Yoohyeon becomes corrupted with the idea of power & kills JiU. In her mind JiU betrayed her, but in reality it was her. (If you watch the background during any scenes with only the two of them, you will notice that when JiU is the "bad guy" there is destruction raining down, but no actual damage. But when Yoohyeon is the "bad guy" there is actual damage around them. Same as when the funeral with the rose coffin. Only Yoohyeon sees herself as a victim there with JiU being an aggressor, all the others are mourning JiU in there.) Yoohyeon then drives out, imprisons, or kills the others. In the end she is left Queen of a ruined kingdom.

I could tell you really liked this song. Probably my favorite as well! You should probably do a guide to Dreamcatcher or the Dodging Disbandment video on them (although it will spoil all the title tracks up to Scream). While they might have less popularity in Korea compared to the very biggest hitters, they have strong name recognition (in Korea and worldwide) because they have been doing this concept far longer than anyone in Kpop and the girls enjoy it very much. That said, when you get into them more you'll find that not every b side has a strong rock influence.

Deja Vu is a collaboration with a fantasy based mobile game and the game story centered around themes of faith, sacrifice, corruption and betrayal (a very simplified explanation of the game more complex plot).
In the MV, it is their take on the game story themes and the use of the meaning of Deja Vu (i.e. the feeling that you have already experienced something, even when in reality you never have) to tell the story. Basically, there are two main character which is Yoohyeon (the antagonist) shown at the start of the MV, and she converts Jiu's (the protagonist) throne (shown by the darkness enveloping her when she sat on the throne).
The usage of Deja Vu is through the various reversed scenes, for example, the first and second sword scene where in the first (representing a fake memory i.e. Deja Vu), Yoohyeon see herself as the "victim" in a normal dress with Jiu is in black pointing the sword at her and in the second sword scene (representing reality), where Jiu is in the pretty dress and Yoohyeon is in black, the opposite happen and Yoohyeon backstabing Jiu instead, and getting rid the rest of the members with her only remaining on the throne (scenes of the members circling her accusingly, the judas like supper table, all the members falling at the end etc. hint of it) . Other examples are the switching of the person in the coffin with the other pointing the sword towards it.

DC girls especially Yoohyeon are big fans of Day6. Korean Pop-Rock band generally considerably more "emo" than Dreamcatcher but great artists, with great songs (Recommend their Debut song "Congratulations" and a couple newer classics "You were beautiful" & "Shoot Me" if your interested) Day6 play their own instruments and very emotional and expressive vocalists as well. They are under an off-shoot of JYP essentially mothballed in favor of other groups but still putting out music.
DC girls especially Siyeon are also fans of BabyMetal and SiYeon mentioned going to a JRock band [One Ok Rock] live concert in Seoul. Siyeon said in a behind video a few years ago that a One Ok Rock wristband she bought at that concert was her most prized possession.

Nightmare series: in order of their releases
    Chase me
    Good night
    Fly high
    You and I
    What
    Piri
Breaking out (this is a Japanese release that could be another way of seeing the ending of the series)
    Game collaborations:
    Deja vu (Kings Raid Game)
    Rose blue (Girl Cafe Gun)
Japanese releases: Their Japanese releases have heavier rock sounds
    Breaking out
    Endless night
    No more
Eclipse and Don’t fight my fire (Kings Raid anime OST)
    Singles:
Full moon (a song for insomnias)
    Over the sky
I would also recommend listening to the albums as well since they try out a lot of genres and their besides are not like their title tracks (the first full album would be a good start :))
    Newes comeback:
Maison (in the album they each have their own solos that they self composed and wrote)

    timeline of events:
minx (5 members) debuts w/why did you come to my home which is kinda girl crush and cute
then comeback with a remade song from a labelmate that's much cuter
    long hiatus
company didn't want to give up on the girls so they planned a redebut w/a concept that at least stands out in the market. a risk they were going to take cos last time that was their problem.
upon the 2nd comeback (fly high) they were already able to go on a world tour. they were a near instant hit overseas. first kpop group to perform in certain european and latin american countries.
other non-band acts that have done rock:
pink fantasy's poison is also very j-rock.
seventeen actually has several rock title tracks (clap, call call call, rock with you) and b-sides (woozi's ruby, run to you, together, etc) and has lots of guitar elements in their songs even in their latest comeback "hot"
g-idle's latest comeback tomboy has rock elements
siyeon probably liked their sound the most as she was the vocalist of a rock band before. dami also listens to punk rock, her solo song in the latest album is in that genre. everyone in the group appreciates how rock makes them stand out and have a clear "sound" that they can call their own, and how their voices are utilized well every time. i mean they also sing non-rock songs cos their discography is very diverse
as for their first win...people have been recommending the dodging disbandment video. sighs lol. no spoilers lol hope u come to watch it
the thing about dreamcatcher right...is that they've dabbled into soooo many genres already. their title tracks will always have rock elements to them but the b-sides are incredibly diverse. if you ever come to listen to their whole discography you'll quickly realize just how insane they are lol. they have many amazing songs the korean public is simply unaware of. kind of frustrating that the only thing not getting them attention in korea is their Title Tracks.
edit: i mean that the only reason they're not getting attention in korea is their Title Tracks.
try "black or white", "red sun", and "wind blows", which are all b-sides they performed on music shows
dami's rap really shines in the latest comeback imo, in maison

they started with a different name (minx) with 5 members and with a completely different concept, it was a cute fun concept which was a very common concept at that time. they didn't get enough support and success and, 2 years in their carreer, they disbanded and the company decided to rebrand and redebut them instead of throwing their already very talented idols to waste, they added 2 more members and yeah they told them they were drastically changing their concept and ofc they were really afraid of the new debut not going well bc no girl group had ever done it before, but that was exactly why they succeeded and now when they talk about their times as minx, they say they like the current concept way more (siyeon doesn't like minx's concept at all actually and she has expressed those were very difficult times for her) and they are very happy having this type of rock-ish sound.

Dreamcatcher actually used to be a 5 member girl group called MINX through 2014-2016 (The members were JiU, SuA, Siyeon, Yoohyeon, and Dami), they released the typical pop that was normal for most girl groups during that time. But, people at HappyFace, thought there was an opportunity to market on an untouched genre in kpop, Rock. So they decided to move on from MINX and redebut them as Dreamcatcher in 2017 (and added 2 members, Handong and Gahyeon respectively.)
... I don't know why I gave a history lesson on Dreamcatcher, but to answer one of your questions, I'm pretty sure that as trainees, they didn't expect to go from MINX, a bubble pop group, to Dreamcatcher, a pop-rock horror concept in barely 3 months! (They disbanded as MINX in November 2016, and re-debuted in January 2017) I can bet they never expected to do this concept in general, they nailed it though. And yes, they REALLY enjoy this concept, can't imagine themselves doing any other concept anymore, and have all collectively agreed to put MINX in the past lol.
Hope you can react to their re-debut "Chase me" Compare it to MINX's "Love Shake" (doesn't have to be an actual vid lol) and it's just night and day.

Hey, Andy! I was watching your reactions to mvs and was really surprised that there are no reactions to NCT🤔🤔 Can you please react to nct sub units? I recommend to watch From Home, Make a wish, 90’s love, universe (let’s play ball) and 7th sense by NCT U; Simon says, sticker, favourite (vampire), kick it by NCT 127; Hello future, Glitch mode, BOOM, Hot sauce, GO , Riding by NCT Dream. You can make 3 separate reactions for several mvs of each unit, it would be really interesting to watch, like a marathon🔥

This group formerly known as Minx, before the rebirth of Dreamcatcher, they having a hard time before, because of the Minx era and they knew before about the drastic changes of the musicality and the concept its complete 180 on their past, but now... this is the safe route for them it works! actually they popular internationally lots of fans, but domestically... the knets is neutral about rock thing, because you know, rock is not musically appealing in korea and not for mainstream market thats why after 5 years recieve their first ever win, yeah its been a while, long overdue they work really hard 💯
