The first time I ever saw this scene, I know what was coming well in advance. I had spoiled myself and I was determined not to cry when I actually got to this scene in the anime. At some point, I felt water falling down my cheeks and realized that I had started to cry without noticing. I think that I can really empathize with the Strawhats here, even if they knew it was inevitable it still hurt to say goodbye to Merry. Just my two cents.

I grew up with the going merry as the strawhats boat all through my teenagehood and I watched this scene when I was transitioning from a student to a working "adult" so it felt like saying goodbye to my innocent childhood days and this makes this scene 100x harder and I think about this every time I watch it which is why I can never stop crying when I see it
damn, that would hit much harder.. i watch op like a jumping rabbit.. only last year when i start bingewatching from the 1st eps.. and geez i cried a river..
You know what's the most significant thing for me? It's knowing that symbolically Merry's death also represents the death of what One Piece was as a manga up until that point. If you really think about it, every arc after this had insane power creeps and overpowered monsters all over the place. The ship's death also signaled the death of their innocence as a crew.
Right, it turned from fighting to survive as a small crew, just finding adventure on the road to their dreams to trying to flip the world upside down and defying the world, becoming figures deemed stronger than (i forgor the word)

Man it's been 3 years why do I still cry
When I first started reading One piece, this was the latest chapter. I only knew that because I binged the whole series up to that point. It just seemed so surreal, it was like I had suddenly come to the end of the story even though we had not even come to the halfway point and Usopp was still gone from the crew. At the time, it seemed like the journey was over, how could they possibly finish it without a dear comrade who had been with them since the start. It still gets me to this day.
The crazy thing about one piece is that the dead never stay dead. Merry still feels like she's alive today, same as Ace, Roger, and Whitebeard.

Before i met her my wife never watched OP. She had seen the commercials and it she just assumed it was for kids. But she knew how much I loved it so one day shebwss like lets watch it together. After arlong park she loved it. When we got to Merry's funeral. I told her i cry evrytime i read/watch it. She was like well she probably wouldnt. I looked ever during and shes full on ugly crying. She was like i cant believe im so sad over a fictional ship. We had to take a break for a couple of days from watching op

You know I was genuinely upset when the Straw Hats got the news that Merry was unfixable. My heart literally sank when Kaku was explaining the problem and when Luffy and Usopp was arguing about whether or not to leave behind Merry I was actually conflicted. I did *not* like the idea of them finishing their journey without Merry. Oda did a great job making Merry it's own character, and I don't mean the ghostly spirit thing. The entire time *before* Skypeia Merry has a setting was a character itself. No matter what was happening whenever the Straw Hats were sailing the ship's design and appearance always gave off a fun, relaxing vibe. It was more than a ship, it was their home. And everyone knows that when you have a place to call home, you get attached to it. Some people will literally die rather than abandon their house, because they love it *that* much. And it's a sentiment that's completely understandable, so when Merry had reached her final voyage coupled with the ship manifesting itself into the physical world set up the perfect emotional setting when her funeral came. I really hope Sunny manifests itself as well. I loved the way Robin had greeted it after the time-skip, and I love the setting that Sunny brought. She's big, she has a commanding presence that tells she's powerful, but also light-hearted with the happy lion smiling at the world searching for new friends.
First time I watched this show, I've seen some sad moments; the first time I cried was the moment Going Merry died and said it's sorry.
This Scene was truly a Legendary moment in One Piece. Know what will fuck you up just like this scene? Clannad and A Lie in April
